2023.03.20 16:23 CrazedProphet F1 Spouse Married to US Citizen - Liability for Social Security & Medicare Taxes?

Hey y'all, my spouse was on a F1 for 2022. We married at the end of the year, but before 2023. We are filling our taxes together for 2022 which means she would be treated as a US resident for 2022.
How does that affect her liability for Social Security & Medicare Taxes?
Further elaboration: I am confused because when we choose 'married filing jointly' it means she chooses to be treated as a US resident for her tax returns, but are tax returns are the same as the Social security and Medicare tax. Are the social security and Medicare taxes retroactive like tax returns? Or is it time dependant e.g. she wasn't married for the majority of the year she didn't have to pay them for the majority of the year.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully offering some advice it is duly appreciated especially as things ramp up during tax season. Please comment with any questions I'll be watching this thread and giving additional information if necessary.

Hi all,
My wife and I are currently having a bit of a nightmare after her employer has gone back on a verbal agreement for her to work part time after maternity leave, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Apologies in advance for the long post.
We live in England and I will summarise the situation as follows:
My wife works as a designer for a small firm (<10 employees, no HR department) and has been on maternity leave (+ accrued annual leave) since February 2022. Throughout this period, she has had three face to face meetings with the directors in which she discussed returning to work 3 days a week.
Following one of these meetings my wife received an email (dated 08/11/2022) from one of the directors in which the director confirmed they understood that “You will be available to work 3 days a week upon your return.”
Working on the basis my wife and her employer had an agreement that she would return to work 3 days a week we have subsequently organised childcare for those days.
On Friday 10th March 2023 my wife had the last of the 3 meetings with the directors in which it was again discussed that she would be returning to work on Tuesday 21st March and on a 3 days a week basis. (No email confirmation of this discussion).
At this point we thought everything was fine.
On Wednesday 15th March 2023 my wife received an email from one of the directors in which he explained that the business had had a rough year and as such:
"This position has changed significantly since you went on maternity leave, in that we now require that person to split their time between design (approx. 50%) accounts data input (approx. 20%) spares organisation (approx. 20%) and other tasks which were previously handled by *ex-employee* (approx. 10%). To carry out this role requires a full working week for one person.
So if you are to return as planned we are left in a position where we would have to make a member of our team redundant. In this situation, because of your service and experience, you will get first refusal to take up this full-time role, and avoid redundancy, but we would need you to work full time. We appreciate that you requested returning part time only, but having reviewed our budgets and cash flow forecasts we simply don’t have more than one position available, and this has to be full time in order to complete the tasks required.”
We are now left in a situation where we must either find childcare for an additional 2 days a week at very short notice, or my wife takes redundancy. Therefore, no longer needing the childcare.
However, we have already paid the deposit for childcare (which we will lose if our child doesn’t leave on the agreed date) and the fees for this month. We also must give the nursery 6 weeks’ notice if we want to cancel the childcare so we will lose an additional 6 weeks of childcare costs.
Following the email on 15th March my wife spoke to ACAS, who advised she doesn’t legally have much to go on as there was no explicit confirmation of the part time working or a change to her contract. However, the advisor did point out that my wife’s employer had stated in their email they only require a designer part time.
My wife has subsequently responded to their email to say she will be in the office as planned on Tuesday 21st to try to find a solution but added that by their own admission they only need a part time designer.
We are hoping the issue can be resolved through discussions between my wife and her employers. However, we wanted to double check there wasn’t any other options we hadn’t considered or advisors we could speak to.
One piece of additional information that may be of importance:
My wife had a review in December 2022 in which her employer offered her a pay rise and a bonus. This was on the basis she returned to work for them after the maternity leave had ended. If she doesn't receive this bonus would that count as discrimination?

2023.03.20 16:02 Gorio1961 Tattoos, Loan Repayments, and More: Air Force Attacks Recruiting Barriers

Air Force recruiting gutted out a "dead-stick" landing to finish fiscal 2022 and leaders are girding for a still more challenging 2023.
Short-term challenges like low unemployment and the lingering effects of the COVID-induced pause to in-person recruiting can't be helped. But the bigger problem facing the Air Force and the other military services are long-term recruiting trends. Fewer and fewer young Americans are even eligible to serve, with drug use, obesity, and criminal records a growing blot on the population. And now even those who are eligible are growing less and less likely to consider it.
Vice Chief of Staff Gen. David W. Allvin told Air & Space Forces Magazine that top leaders are working the problem. Leaders late last year "put a team together to ensure that we are evaluating all of the things that we do to make sure we're not unintentionally placing barriers [in front of] Americans who might want to join our formation," Allvin said.
The Barriers to Service Cross-Functional Team launched then. Now, with the Air Force facing a potential 10 percent recruiting shortfall in the Active-duty component-and even more in the Guard and Reserve-Allvin is leading the team, pushing for faster results.
"The numbers weren't recovering as fast as we'd like," Allvin said. "This team had already been formed, but I was called in to sort of help accelerate it."
Now dubbed a Tiger Team, it consists of a "core" group of 10 to 15 leaders supported by almost 400 others, enabling leaders to tackle multiple efforts at once.
"We have Space Force representation, Air Force representation, military staff here on the Air Staff, the civilian staff as well, the major commands, of course [Air Education and Training Command] and the 2nd Air Force and the Air Force Recruiting Service," Allvin said.
What barriers the team chooses to tackle are largely driven by suggestions from recruiters and data showing which problems affect the biggest swathes of recruits. Many of the proposed solutions didn't actually come from the Tiger Team, he noted.
"They were making their way through the process," Allvin said. The team chose some to accelerate "and see if we can't get them done in days and weeks."
Two such solutions have already been put into place, and more are coming.
Tattoos
The Air Force announced in early March new tattoo policies permitting one tattoo of no more than an inch per hand, in addition to the previously allowed "ring" tattoos, and one tattoo of no more than one inch on the neck.
The Air Force Recruiting Service's data showed that tattoos were among the top reasons potential recruits get turned away: roughly 1,300 per year, Allvin said. Meanwhile, the Navy-and even the Space Force-had different, more lenient policies.
The Air Force had previously made it easier for recruiting commanders to approve waivers for hand tattoos, with AFRS commander Maj. Gen. Edward W. Thomas Jr. saying he had personally approved dozens based on pictures sent to his phone. Now the need for such waivers is gone, Thomas confirmed at the AFA Warfare Symposium.
"America is changing," Thomas said. "And those applicants coming to us are changing. We've got to be able to adapt. We were literally turning away highly qualified applicants because of a small tattoo that was between their fingers and we were saying, 'I wish we could make you an American Airman. But why don't you walk next door to United States Navy, and they'll be happy to enlist you.'"
Recruiting Incentives
Just a few days after the tattoo policy change, the Air Force announced it was bringing back the Enlisted College Loan Repayment Program, which helps enlisted recruits pay back student debt up to $65,000 after an absence of nearly a decade.
"We get a twofer out of it," Allvin said. "We get to attract Americans, we can offer an incentive and have them really come into our formation and frankly, if they've got some level of college for which they have debt, that means we get a pretty well-educated cohort."
The Air Force is also expanding the career fields in which incoming qualified recruits can receive enlistment bonuses. The new list will be released soon, An Air Force spokeswoman said.
To fund the two programs, the Air Force reprogrammed $15 million for the loan repayments and $25 million for the enlistment bonuses.

Still other changes are in the works, Allvin said.
The Office of the Secretary of Defense, alongside the services, is looking to revive an accelerated pathway to naturalization for immigrants at Basic Military Training.
"We have people who are here, who aren't citizens yet but are willing to serve and die for this country," Allvin said. "So the idea of being able to accelerate the naturalization process, the goal will be by the time they will complete [BMT] that they can become fully naturalized."
That broader Pentagon effort is still ongoing, but the Department of the Air Force, alongside other departments, have signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to start the process and are working on the logistical and procedural hurdles to make it happen.
Other efforts include providing more flexibility on the documents recruits need to make it through the enlistment process, Allvin said.
"When I came in forever ago, it made sense that there was a large percentage of our force that would require driver's licenses for the things that we would do," Allvin said. "It would almost be an assumption. So if you don't have a driver's license for these things, then we really can't take you in the service. Which was OK when just about everybody, or a large percentage, had driver's licenses. But these days because of the lack of a demand for it, with better public transportation or the advent of other capabilities that weren't available before. Plus, there's some access issues. There may be folks who are in the inner city who can use public transportation or don't have the means or the access-it doesn't mean they don't want to serve the country."
Those longer-term issues can be complicated, Allvin said, by different requirements across different states or bureaucratic hurdles-one of the issues that Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. has highlighted as part of his "Accelerate Change or Lose" action orders. And so the Tiger Team will stay in place "for the next several months at least," Allvin said.
"it's very clear, it's very tangible," Allvin said. "Every week that we don't do one of these things, you can count the number of Americans that are coming in that we're having to turn away."

We are now left in a situation where we must either find childcare for an additional 2 days a week at very short notice, or my wife takes redundancy. Therefore, no longer needing the childcare.
However, we have already paid the deposit for childcare (which we will lose if our child doesn’t leave on the agreed date) and the fees for this month. We also must give the nursery 6 weeks’ notice if we want to cancel the childcare so we will lose an additional 6 weeks of childcare costs.
Following the email on 15th March my wife spoke to ACAS, who advised she doesn’t legally have much to go on as there was no explicit confirmation of the part time working or a change to her contract. However, the advisor did point out that my wife’s employer had stated in their email they only require a designer part time.
My wife has subsequently responded to their email to say she will be in the office as planned on Tuesday 21st to try to find a solution but added that by their own admission they only need a part time designer.
We are hoping the issue can be resolved through discussions between my wife and her employers. However, we wanted to double check there wasn’t any other options we hadn’t considered or advisors we could speak to.
One piece of additional information that may be of importance:
My wife had a review in December 2022 in which her employer offered her a pay rise and a bonus. This was on the basis she returned to work for them after the maternity leave had ended. If she doesn't receive this bonus would that count as discrimination?

Hi Reddit,
I am currently employed at an independent pharmacy in New York. I work part time, on average 3 days/week since December 2021. I recently discovered that I am legally entitled to sick pay according to the NYS Paid Sick Leave Policy that I did not receive thus far. I figured I was not entitled to sick time because of my part time status and I don't have other benefits such as vacation/holiday pay. To my knowledge, I was supposed to be paid at least 5 days sick pay when I got COVID and had to quarantine right when I started the job in December 2021. In addition, I did not receive 40 hours in 2022 (I have accrued enough hours for the year at the 1 hour accrued per 30 hours worked). I also got sick last month and was supposed to work 27 hours but left early mid shift only working 12 hours (leaving 15 hours that should have been paid using sick time). After learning this, I contacted my employer today and he said (after much back and forth) that he will not pay me any sick time as I was not "qualified". I referenced the NYS Paid Sick Leave policy to which he responded he will no longer debate with me and if I wanted to contest him, that I should just hand in my keys and "we should just end it here." At the end of work today, someone came to collect the keys. My questions are:
  1. I have very clearly in writing that bringing up this sick time pay as a debate would lead to immediate termination. This looks to me very clearly as retaliation. Do I have a strong case for a wrongful termination lawsuit? Is it worth pursuing this route? My sister is a lawyer who would represent me at no charge, but don't know how much compensation these cases usually pay out.
  2. He contacted me later tonight saying that officially I will be terminated April 15 and if I can confirm my schedule for next week. Should I continue to work until April 15, and try to recuperate my sick time after termination? Or would this diminish the above retaliation/wrongful termination case?
Basically, I can go one of two ways here. Work until April 15 with confirmed pay and try to get my sick hours payed out to me. Or, I can confirm with my employer that giving my keys today was my termination and very clearly retaliation then sue and try to receive a settlement. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Live my Life without Bullying and Judgement: No, I am not going to act like I am the only one that's been bullied, but there are others who have been teased. I get it. My case is severely bad though. I know I am an ugly girl. Some kind of guy on meet me told me that "I could be worse" and another guy on an dating site said to me "finally you admit you're ugly to me" before surgery. Believe me, I am self-aware to know it... I am ugly, but surgery's going to fix my ugly face for good. I am not an idiot. I am so low on the looks scale. I was hanging out with a girl who knows she looks good. I saw this guy that was cute and she said "yeah right!" Made me feel like shit and knowing she's a good looking enough girl to get a guy like that. :/ Yeah, I felt like complete garbage. I am not going to pretend I am attractive yet when I am not. In public "offline" and online, I am treated so badly. It's gotten to the point where I can't take it anymore. If I am out somewhere, I get laughed at. I get treated so much differently than my beautiful counterparts. After surgery, I will notice a big difference in how others treat me. I am over watching the beautiful people live lives I crave. Looks are a big factor in how people treat you. This girl on reddit had like 20 procedures. She became pretty. It took her time. She received the pretty privilege. People treated her much differently. Why should it be any different with me? She increased her pickiness in terms of looks when dating men, then why can't I be picky too? Improve my Mood: How I look is making me more irritable, frustrated, I don't want to keep crying hysterically, breaking my stuff, and how I look is tied to my mental state. Been past my breaking point.
Land Dates and Perhaps partners: One of the reasons I am having work done is to be in relationships and date like other people get to do. I want to be one of the girls guys would kill to have. I want a guy to go "oh she's so pretty make her my girlfriend type!" I want to date, but the reality is that I need to save up for my surgery first before another relationship especially the kind of guy that I want and he wants me too. (vice versa) I feel like my looks are just not there (up to par yet) and my face is holding me back from dating men and aren't interested in me yet. After surgery, men will be lining up to date me for sure.. in the future. Go from ugly to pretty...drastically alter my outer exterior. I decided to up my game ton. People have had surgery to get partners. Nothing's wrong with it. People tell me "how looks aren't everything" I know looks aren't, but I can't I get them out of my mind, especially if I am planning to go out there becoming attractive on purpose with effort in on my part. I am not going to be one of those girls who think women are entitled to attractive people and for them to love and accept them for who they are. Smh. 🤦‍♀️ I am not going to be like those people. 2023.03.20 15:34 Technical_Owl_ I've been offered an Operations Management role...but I don't have any experience...any advice?

This is a long one, so I apologize, but it's to provide all the relevant context to the situation.
2017: I recently graduated college with two AA degrees in Legal Studies. One with a focus on litigation and one with a focus on Real Property. I applied for dozens of paralegal jobs, and I always got a call back saying they loved me but they had to go with someone with experience. Frustrated with those experiences, I looked to other industries for employment. I found a new home builder looking for a permit coordinator. We covered some of these processes in one of my Real Property classes, so I knew about 20% of the job and I figured I could fill in the rest later. I was interviewed by Peter, the director of construction at the time, and we hit it off so he got me in front of the division president and I was offered the job.
2017: I worked under Peter for about 6 months. I developed a brand new permitting management system and brought down the length of the permitting process from 60 days to 15 days. The person I replaced was really inefficient, so what I did sounds more impressive than it actually was, but it was still a great job nonetheless. Peter left the company and started his own construction company.
2018-2021: I continued working for the home builder and in 2018 I moved into a construction supervisor role. I spent that time learning the ins and outs of building a home. I got pretty good at it. Ultimately I left because of a terrible manager that did not have my back at all when it came to decisions I made.
This is when I get the first call from Peter. Peter wants me to come on board to do permitting for him. Unfortunately the pay was too low, and I told him I appreciated it, but I couldn't make it work with my bills.
2021-2022: I joined another constitution company doing similar work but more with a focus on concrete and framing only. It was a small family owned buisiness, and while it was nice, I wasn't making enough money to justify the hours.
While looking for new employment elsewhere with better pay, I get another call from Peter telling me he is looking to expand his business and he wants me to work for him, but doesn't really know what yet but he wants me to come down, see his new office, and have a chat.
I go down to his office and he shows me around, then he pulls up something from his PC on the conference room TV, and low and behold, it's a near copy of the template I used to track permitting. I guess I made a really good impression on him as he was using an expanded version of my system for his whole business. We talk a bit and he lets me know we will keep in touch and hopefully the stars will align one day and I'll be working for him. He says he really wants me to be a part of the business because I'm resourceful, I like solving problems and puzzles, I'm not afraid to ask for help understanding new things, and I learn quickly.
2022-now: I got a job supervising home building again and I'm making the most money I've ever made. It's nice but it's still the same stressful bullshit. The management here is slightly better than at the first place and I'm pretty happy with it I guess. Unfortunately the upward mobility track for this position is something I am absolutely not interested in. That position is usually the first to be let go in a downturn and it's a really risky position to sit in for a long time.
I recently get another phone call from Peter. This time he's offering me an Operations Management role. And this is where I'm just lost and need advice. I haven't managed direct reports in 15 years, and when I did, it wasn't that serious. (I was an assistant manager for a credit card call center). He's aware of this and tells me he wants to mentor me between now and the end of the year and then formally place me in a VP of Operations role. He says he needs someone in the office making sure everything is running smoothly and basically being the new point of contact so that he has more free time to be out in the field and growing the business with new work.
I'm going to be honest. I have no frickin clue what an Operations manager does nor what a VP of Operations does day to day. I asked him if I could shadow him for a day of work (we have that now scheduled) so that I could be sure this is something I want to do.
I want to make sure I go in as prepared as possible to assess the situation and make sure that this is a good move. I would have to take a manageable paycut starting out, but if I can make it to the VP role, I would be getting paid much more than I'm even making today.
What questions should I be asking? What should I be looking for? I don't have any formal business education, and I feel like I may be in over my head.

Hello,
I have Federal estimated tax payments that I need to enter on the H&R Block site for my 2022 taxes. I only made three payments as I realized at the end of the year I overpaid what I needed to. The 1st and 3rd payments were on time on 4/18 and 9/15. The second payment was actually made late on 6/22. In the three payments I actually overpaid an amount more than one of the individual payments.
On the HR Block site, I cannot put the 6/22 date into the second installment box as it falls past the deadline. Is it that important that I enter a second installment? Do I need credit for that even though it was a few days late? The HR Block help section seemed to suggest just applying the late second payment to the third and combine those and enter in a date between those two payments. I did that and it didn't seem to affect my refund amount. Is that the way I should go or is it important that I enter in a second installment payment?

This has nothing to do with the hype this week. I would have posted this a long time ago if the idea had been fully formed in my mind at that point.
Whether the end is close or not, this is still something we should discuss.
Our plans for the future don't mean much long term if we raise shitty kids who end up just like the current ruling class in a couple generations.
Geez. Anyways
I'll start:
My kids won't even know they're rich until they're at least 18. Maybe even 21.
If some relative accidentally lets it slip, eh, whatever.
But as far as it depends on me, and the lifestyle we live, they won't have any reason to assume more than upper middle class that just has a relatively large travel budget. We will have nice things, I won't deprive my family to be sure, but yachts and personal servants are not for me
The most important part of this is, they don't get an effing allowance.
We've seen the damaging effects of giving people free money on a macro scale with banks and hedge funds, and the irresponsible thinking it breeds, let's not condition our kids that way for God's sake!
The way my parents did it was to pay us small amounts for certain chores we did.
Teach us the benefit of hard work and saving up early on.
We would pick weeds out of the garden for hours, and then measure them by length (vine type weed), because we were paid per inch.
And once they get old enough for an actual low level job, make that the standard. Maybe don't pay them more for chores than they could make for a real entry level position.
Working in customer service, food service, and as a camp counselor have been the things that have made me grow the most as a person
Taking that life experience away from your kids just cause it sucks to go through is missing the point.
The only evil part of jobs like that is when people are stuck in them for life, and working multiples at a time just to get by.
But as a right of passage/trial by fire for apelings growing into full apes?
They have their place.
One important part of this is that I'll still be working myself, just on my terms, for the direct benefit of others (charity work, managing rent to own setups, etc)
In addition to working for positive change for the sake of positive change, I want to set an example for the kind of hard work an ape should do once they're grown.
I also want to avoid feelings of jealousy, like "why doesn't dad pull the weeds? He just sits on his ass all day anyways."
Papa Cohen is only interested in candidates that want to work. Let's raise kids that our dad would be proud of.
So yeah.
That is my two cents.
