2023.06.10 20:07 siclo99 It’s more than the chip.

Having watched the Nuggets the last few seasons as a Warriors fan I realized that as huge a win as it would be for your team it’s really only the beginning. Now your team knows what it all feels like, the pressure, losing home court, winning it back on the biggest stage. The experience and chemistry of your team will only increase, add to that being even more battle tested and confident when it counts. It’s gonna be a fun show to watch over the next few years.

2023.06.10 20:04 ellie9197 I don't know if he's being abusive or I'm blowing it out of proportion

Hi I hope this is the right place to put this. I don't know if he's being emotionally abusive or if its in my head and im blowing this out of proportion.
He's telling me a lot that I'm overly sensitive and it happened today and I feel at the end of my rope.
He's not supportive of my job at all because its involved with the court system. Its stable, relative well paying (I can just about save) and I've been it for over two years now.
I recently had to turn something down at work as it would involve a picture of me and a blog post about me going out on social media. I don't feel comfortable about that, for fear of backlash I'd get (I'm a transwoman) from both the lgbt community and those who don't support it.
I mentioned this to him and when I mentioned backlash from the lgbt he nodded as if supporting that.
When I mentioned it to him later, he said I'm just being overly sensitive, didn't see the problem and said "What do you want me to, apologise?"
I'm upset that he doesn't see th problem or how I feel its hurt me, he just said I'm being overly sensitive and went to the bedroom. And I feel horrible and lost, is he being abusive or am I just being overly sensitive and blowing it all out of proportion. Hes been borderline emotionally abusive in the past and I don't know what to do.
I'm sorry if this isn't the right place, and I'm sorry for rambling on. Thank you.

2023.06.10 20:02 OpaSeed Do I regret having children?

This question popped up in my email from Reddit so I answered it and then the whole topic disappeared! I love spending an hour of my life creating a post to have it vanish! It's so rewarding! Here is the post...
In my late teens and early twenties I believed that I possibly was infertile. I had been active for six years with a few partners and had not conceived and made little or no effort to avoid it (reckless, I know), was born 3 months premature, had surgery when very young, and had vericose veins that I believed possibly inhibited fertility (a ‘sack of worms’). For the first two years with the woman that would be my wife we also never conceived. Then it happened. When I was twenty-two I had my first child, a daughter, who was very special to me. My wife and I fell in love very deeply when we were first together and I felt that we would have a long future together and that there was something very special about our relationship. When we had our first baby I loved her very much. She was a very difficult child, though. She screamed constantly and never slept. I know I suffered from sleep deprivation for the first year with her. After her we had six more children. The second, another daughter, was quite the polar opposite and was a very happy and playful baby. The third, another girl, was also happy but quiet and very sweet and kind. My fourth child was my first son who was a very happy, playful, and active baby. Time passed and my first batch of four began growing and doing well in school and in life. They were all high-ability students and were very, very creative. I stayed at home and raised the kids and watched the house while my wife went to school and worked part-time eventually becoming a teacher. She would come home for lunch and spent all of her time with us when she wasn’t at work so we were a tight-knit family. Eventually we had her IUD removed and had more children. First another girl, then a boy, then another girl. The third girl was adopted by my wife’s sister, who had a very difficult first pregnancy with her son and could not have more children. A couple of years ago, though, my wife and I had a falling out after 23 years together. Having been assured by her laboriously that she would “…never stop loving you no matter what.”, “…never give up on you.”, “…never leave you, ever!”, “It would be impossible.”, and “You don’t have anything to worry about.” a thousand times over, she stopped loving me, gave up on me, left me, and I have worries. I gave up on the outside world over sixteen years ago to focus on our children while she became a professional so I don’t have any way to take care of myself. Her grandmother gave us a house as she loved our family and she “Wanted the house to be for one family again.”, as it had been divided into two apartments and one half rented out. Now my wife has decided that it’s not my home, her mother having put her name on the deed and with her grandmother dead there is no one to contest this. I refused to divorce her and still stay home watching my children every day, cooking, cleaning, doing dishes, putting them in bed, playing catch, riding bikes, going on walks, playing games, etc.. She gave up on teaching, started drinking heavily, started vaping, and is rarely ever here, often coming home insanely drunk having driven home, even falling down on the front porch in full view of the children while crawling through the front door. She got arrested a few days ago for driving drunk and committing serious bodily harm to a ‘Police official’ which is a level 6 felony and will be going to court soon. In closing, do I regret having children? NEVER! I love every one of my children, even though the first batch are gown up now and I almost never see them and they pretty much hate me. My two young children that I raise are my best friends and are two of the most excellent people I’ve ever known. They are one of the only sources of joy or purpose in my life. Do I regret marrying a narcissist who mirrored me for years before degrading me, devaluing me, and finally discarding me? YES!

2023.06.10 19:59 hearsdemons The confusion over what is and isn’t a security, as seen by the SEC

This week, the SEC filed a suit against Binance, accusing that many of the tokens that are traded on Binance are unregistered securities.
The SEC explicitly names these cryptocurrencies as being unregistered securities: Solana, Cardano, Polygon, Filecoin, Cosmos, The Sandbox, Decentraland, Algorand, Axie Infinity, and Coti.
It would be beneficial to go over what exactly is a security and how something being a security is determined. And what cryptocurrencies the SEC will target as securities and what, if any, is safe in this space.
The Howey Test
The Howey test is a legal test used in the United States to determine whether a transaction qualifies as an investment contract and, thus, is considered a security under federal law. The test was established by the U.S. Supreme Court in SEC v. W.J. Howey Co. (1946), and it has since been applied in numerous cases to determine whether various financial arrangements and offerings constitute securities.
Three criteria for something to be a security
The first criterion is a financial investment. The participants in the transaction must be risking their own money. This comprises both financial and in-kind investments.
The second requirement is a shared enterprise. The financial success of the investors is somehow connected. This can be proven by providing evidence of the investors' resource pooling or reliance on a third party to manage their investments.
The third criterion is an expectation of profits solely from the efforts of others. The investors are relying on someone else to generate a return on their investment. This could include, for example, profits generated by a third- party manager or profits generated by the efforts of a particular group or organization
Now with this background, let’s see what would or wouldn’t qualify as a security in the crypto space:
Bitcoin
Bitcoin is not considered a security because its anonymous and open-source origins mean investor profits are not dependent on the efforts of developers or managers, said Carol Goforth, a law professor at the University of Arkansas. More on this
Ethereum (Uncertain, may/may not be a security)
With Ethereum, it’s complicated. It’s up in the air on whether or not it’s seen as a security by the government. Genslar has said everything but bitcoin is a security. But the SEC in its filings against a number of well known and established cryptocurrencies (Solana, Cardano, Polygon, Filecoin, Cosmos, The Sandbox, Decentraland, Algorand, Axie Infinity, and Coti), decidedly did not include Ethereum.
CryptoSlate (May 2023)
Gensler has previously suggested that “everything other than Bitcoin” in the crypto space could be seen as a security, but has notably refused to clearly state as much about Ethereum. When pressed to say the words, “I believe Ethereum is a security,” the Hon. Chair just will not do it. Gensler’s reluctance to classify Ether is curious when his SEC is so eager to claim as much for others. Why?
Ethereum could potentially fall under the purview of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which regards Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether as commodities, not securities. Not only do the two categories differ wildly from one another, this overlap could create a regulatory tug-of-war that would Gensler’s public stance on Ethereum while trying to avoid the appearance of infighting within the federal government.
Another analysis from Protos, argues that Gensler’s evasion on the matter may be a consequence of the SEC’s earlier inaction following the infamous DAO hack, which saw the blockchain fork into Ethereum Classic and put the entire ecosystem at risk. However, at the time the SEC did nothing, and now Gensler finds himself in the unenviable position of making up for his predecessors’ oversights. Now that the Ethereum ecosystem has spent years recovering and building credibility, retroactively declaring it an unregistered security would have unforeseen, but no doubt disastrous, consequences for investors.
In other words, protecting investors in this case would mean protecting them from the protector.
For now, Genslar is not going after Ethereum. Whether that’s to protect his investor friends who have lots invested in Ethereum, or has enough on his plate for now with his battle against Binance, for whatever reason, he currently has no appetite to go after Ethereum. That may change in the future.
All other cryptocurrencies not Bitcoin or Ethereum
Those rulings said developers' statements tying the value of their digital assets to efforts to grow or maintain the associated blockchain systems showed that investor profits depended on the "efforts of others." Source
All others not named Bitcoin or Ethereum are securities. Why? Because the same thing that’s keeping them alive is the same thing that’s killing them. All of these promises to “believe in the tech” and “wait until we introduce X”, “here’s our roadmap and how this project will progress”, all these promises, although exciting also hints that the price of the cryptocurrency may be higher tomorrow because of the work the team is doing.
This is what differentiates Bitcoin from all other coins in this space. Bitcoin makes no such promises.

2023.06.10 19:52 SwordfishMountain832 Disabled due to long COVID. My parent is hiring a lawyer to deem me incapacitated and get power of attorney over me.

This is in Colorado, USA.
I am disabled and out of work due to long COVID. I also have a history of mental health issues, unfortunately with a recent hospitalization.
My parent wants power of attorney over me to force me to either live with them or become institutionalized, and to make all my medical decisions for me. They are in the process of hiring a lawyer.
I do not want this as I feel I am able to make my own medical decisions, and if I did become incapacitated I would not want my parent making my decisions.
I obviously know I need to hire a lawyer myself, but what type of lawyer specializes in this? Every single lawyer offers to fill out power of attorney paperwork so I don’t know how to Google a specialist.
How incapacitated does someone need to be for the courts to appoint a power of attorney? Because I am disabled I do have a lot of medical records documenting my mental and physical limitations. How wide is the gap between “disabled enough to qualify for SSDI” and “disabled enough to be deemed incapacitated by a court”?
Finally is there anything I should do NOW while waiting to get in to see a lawyer? Should I cobble together an advanced directive today? I have appointments with my therapists this week - should I warn them or get them to evaluate my competency?
Thank you in advance.

2023.06.10 19:51 LamaPajamas 75A wheel recommendations?

I use impala skates sadly, and I did get some new wheels last month but they're still indoor wheels. I feel very comfortable where I'm at, skating indoors and in basketball courts. My only issue is that the sidewalks that I want to skate on have a lot of cracks and there's a couple uneven tiles, so idk if outdoor wheels would even help.

2023.06.10 19:49 PastSpring2194 DVLA penalising me - for their admin error?

Hello, I’ve had a bit of a strange experience with the DVLA recently and I’m hoping someone can shed some light on the best way to resolve this. Apologies in advance for the long post but I want to include the specifics so I’m clear.
I bought a car last year, the former owner transferred the registration to me online, in my presence; I taxed it, took out insurance and drove it home.
All was well until April 23, when I got a call from my wife saying that our car had been clamped on the residents’ parking outside, on our street. I was using a car I’d borrowed from my parents at the time, as mine (clamped) had failed it’s MOT due to a faulty sensor and I was awaiting the new part so had just left mine outside as usual.
Anyway, when I got home, I checked the note that had been stuck on the car by the clampers and saw that it was for unpaid road tax. Hmmm- checked my direct debit - still there but they hadn’t taken payment since January (it was now April). I couldn’t speak to anyone due to call volumes so eventually got through to a text chat advisor online.
I explained the situation to the chat person and they said the reason my direct debit had stopped was that the car was not registered to me and they only take direct debit until renewal and then don’t renew. They don’t notify the person they’ve been billing of any issues - they just clamp it.
I was baffled- I distinctly remembered the car being successfully transferred over to me and a confirmation webpage online. I didn’t receive paperwork or a confirmation email- though I put this down to Covid/working from home disorganisation commonplace at that time. However the DD was set up and seemed to be fine so I wasn’t concerned until this point.
I had a long conversation with the webchat advisor, explained it must be an IT or admin error and asked if there’s any way to escalate this and check it out. No luck at all - my mistake and their system is never wrong (paraphrasing).
To complicate matters, the lack of registration and MOT meant that I couldn’t just get the road tax issue sorted. The clamp meant I couldn’t get the MOT- catch 22. The car was going to be towed imminently and escalating clamping fees etc. I’ll cut this bit short but essentially I managed to get the part, gain a stay of execution from the clampers for towing and get the car unclamped, fixed, MOT’d and taxed.
In the process of working out how to do this, I’d called and finally spoken with the DVLA to explain the situation and get an idea of how to fix it. During the conversation we ran through the details and it turns out that their system shows that I HAD been registered as the keeper but had then been unregistered as the keeper. But she could t explain why. She said she’d start an investigation and get the VC5 document to me with my details.
I called again to check on the VC5 a few days later (I was still trying to stop getting the car towed away at this point) and was told that it was in the post and that I’d receive a letter explaining what had happened. I asked him could he tell me and he said that I had been registered as the keeper online but that the former owner had also posted the slip, saying he’d disposed of the car and so the record was then updated to there being no owner.
I’ve since received a letter with a fine (or court) for the having the car on the road in April with no road tax, in addition to the tax that was due from January -April. It’s not a massive fine but I’ve already paid £100 to the clamping company and spent an awful lot of time, hassle and embarrassment (neighbours etc) trying to get this resolved.
I can’t see how I can be considered unregistered as the keeper, yet liable for the fine or considered the registered keeper (at the time) but the direct debit not taken. I’m also confused as to how the former keeper can de-register the new keeper! I don’t want the hassle or lost work time (self employed) going to court but this all seems really unjust to me. Apart from not chasing up their paperwork, I’ve not put a foot wrong.
Thanks for reading. I’m grateful for any advice you can offer.

NOW YOU CAN EASILY BEAT THE TICKET WITHOUT PAYING A DIME TO THEM

Time and time again, we see the evils of “victimless crimes” rearing their ugly head into the daily lives of Americans. These crimes have no party which has been injured: speeding tickets, red light tickets, stop sign tickets, seat belt tickets, possession tickets and more!
These “crimes” have hurt no one, but merely have the semblance of injury due to statutory laws. This leads to Here’s a ticket for $300 because you ran a stop sign at 4 A.M. even though nobody was around [except the officer to ticket you].”
When we think back to the earliest days of laws and judges, you will realize court is really meant for (and only for) a tort; a wrongful act to a person or their property; or an infringement of a human right (other than under contract).
If you broke the Golden Rule: Do No Harm to Person or Their Property – then there should be civil liability and legal consequences. However, if the age of corporations and propaganda (marketing), it seems We The People have lost our way (and rights). Sovereignty is not held by title, but is found in the mind. If the mind is given up, eventually an evil will rise to deceive the people into slavery by consent!
Without writing a thesis on those “lost in corporate America”, suffice it to say that everything “LAW” and “LAW ENFORCEMENT” is set up for revenue generation in this great land. Nothing more, nothing less!

2023.06.10 19:48 ShadowSV-U1 Self-promotion Thread

Use this thread to promote yourself and/or your work!
(Descriptions of fictional crimes investigated by the story's main Character Max.)
Detective's Fate
It's august of 2008.....
Max is a detective living in Chicago He checks his pistol and puts on his police badge as he walks out his front door.
He has been searching for a serial killer known as the Caller for years and always been one step behind due to the red tape.....
More importantly the chief's lazy attitude towards getting search warrants and actions approved by the courts for raids. Twice Max had good intel on the suspect's locations and photo evidence showing him at the sites.
The department needs more vigilant, caring officers and leaders but no one steps up to do it, instead they just complain about the slow progress and officers. And hinder investigations.
Now Max has decided that it might be time to stop playing by the rules and catch this scumbag.... .... ....
Starting his car Max sets his GPS to the address that "The Caller" was last seen and pulls out of his driveway as the 50 miles of directions pop up.
The killer's nickname being for his signature of calling in as he is committing the crime.
As he drives he remembers his first case, five years ago now..... ..... .....
A woman, Joane Taylor, was found dead in an alleyway after going out for the night. She showed no signs of struggle leading the police to believe she had drank to much and expired from alcohol poisoning.... ...
The death was written off as a "party gone wrong".... That is until several more were found and the coroner decided on a whim to test for other substances.
Once it came out that the deaths were possible murders...
The calls started coming in, almost like the suspect wanted credit before revealing himself....
Then ways of the deaths began changing as the Serial Killer explored his twisted desires searching for his preferred method.
The last case being a young woman found stuffed in a dumpster after the killer apparently got scared off.... Max will never forget it.... .... ....
The GPS finishes and the car beeps its final direction, taking an exit off the highway. Ramps out here are always confusing... Which is funny since he has driven this one for five years now...
The chief says he should sit this one out but he can't... The latest victim 3 months ago.
Marie Spelner, a waitress out on her smoke break talking to her spouse on the phone.
Survived by her husband, no children or living relatives. ....
Max Spelner turns into the driveway of the house he was directed to... Stepping out of the car he walks up and knocks on the door. Looking at the house he knows the family must be doing well if they live here.... Raising his hand to knock again he hears a scream from inside....
A second later the door is answered by a middle aged butler holding a tray with wine glasses on it... "Hello Sir, I'm sorry but this house does not wish to partake in any offers at this time..."
Max calmly says. "I'm not selling anything."
The butler looks confused for a moment before his eyes dart over Max's shoulder seeing his unmarked cruiser and he nods.
Looking past the butler Max sees that a woman is cleaning up after their dog.
"Have you seen this man?" Says Max holds up a picture of the one suspected of being the killer.
The butler gives it a once over before replying. "I'm sorry sir, no I have not." His tone sounds like he is lying... ....
"Are you sure?" The detective asks.
"I would not lie about something like that, sir." He states, his eyes not meeting Max's.
The woman calls from inside "Fletcher, who are you talking too?"
"Some man asking about a killer" he calls back.
"The killer is an inside job!" The woman quickly states.
"What?!" Max says.
"The Killer, it's an inside job." She says again, louder this time. In the same Max also hears a child begin to cry in another room.
"We should start from the beginning, it will be easier to explain trust me." The woman says.
'She seems to know what is going on....
"How do I know your story holds water?" He asks out loud.
"Oh I wouldn't lie. I have been following the case myself and it seems like an inside job to me." She states, somehow sounding hurt.
"Is there anyone else in the house besides you two and the baby?" He asks noticing the baby isn't crying anymore.
"Just Fletcher and I live here, the baby is my cousins but he just stays the night sometimes." She replies.
Max draws his gun and enters the house upon reasonable suspicion of an emergency in progress or suspect on the premisses as the man seems to be deceiving.
While the woman still seems unconcerned that the child is now silent.
He pushes past the butler and rushes towards the area he heard the crying. passes the entryway, the dinning room, and a kitchen before finally finding a child in a playpen.
"There there..." He says in a sing song voice picking up the child. "I'm officer Max, do you know where your mommy is?"
The child just cries louder.
Then he sees the man from the photo walk out of the bathroom, upon seeing him he bolts for the door and Max sets the child down gently then gives chase.
He runs through the house, following the man as he can hear the woman screaming at him to stop but he doesn't."
"Stop or I'll shoot." The man doesn't even break stride.
Instead he runs out of the front door and jumps into his car.
Furious that the man might escape he fires at the car as it drives away.
The back window shatters and he hopes he got his tire, but he doesn't wait to find out as he runs to his car and initiates a pursuit....
He flips on his concealed lights in his cruiser as he reverses down the drive and into the street.
The suspects car is fast but he manages to keep up with it weaving in and out of traffic as people move over for the siren.
As they approach a red light there is heavy traffic in the intersection..... ....
The suspect slams on his brakes and Max's cruiser only just stops short of hitting it. Jumping out the Detective points his firearm at the vehicle running up beside seeing heavily tinted windows.
"Get out of the car and on the ground now!!" He shouts as he moves to the driver's side door.
After seeing no response....
Max throws open the door and the driver is gone with the passenger side open.
He quickly runs to the other side catching the man trying to sneak off tackling him to the ground and then takes his arms putting them behind his back.
Max grabs his radio and calls it in as the man cries.
As he is waiting he hears a noise that sounds like static.....
"Wrong guy moron.. Did you ever stop to think I wanted you close for this one. That I planned everything...Even framing the pothead..... I almost lost interest until you pulled in the driveway... The attic is kinda cramped tho... I think I'll go carve some meat. Maybe graduate to other things to. I'm not sure yet. Lets see if you can catch me before......" A familiar voice says over the radio then cuts off... ...
Max looks at the man on the ground. "Why did you run from me?" He asks.
"Cause I have like 19 grams of marijuana in my pocket." He replies...
"Do you know how stupid that is?! I don't care about that I'm looking for a killer."
Before he can answer Max hears the woman from the house screaming for her life and a child's cries on his radio.
Then from below Max. "He's in the house, he's in the house! My mom and the baby!" The man on the ground says crying.
Max uncuffs him and runs to his car heading back to the house as he lays down rubber on the road... ... ...
As he approaches and pulls into the driveway he notices the front door is open.
"Hold on I'm coming!" Max screams jumping out of his cruiser...
He runs into the house finding the woman's body arriving too late. Moving over to her he checks for a pulse but she is gone, a large gash in her neck.
As he stands up he slips in a fluid but gains his balance and tries not to think about what it is....
He rushes to the room the baby was in finding the play pen empty. He leaves the room searching the rest of the house and still doesn't find the child.
"Where are you!!!" He calls out....
"This is the Callers first kidnapping and the media would eat up the fact I failed to stop the man." He thinks as he blames himself.
Sirens begin to blare in the distance as backup is about to arrive... ... ...
"There's a woman dead and a baby missing! The woman is in the dinning room straight ahead of the front door, Hurry!" He yells into his radio...
Looking over at the mother seeing a piece of paper on the floor.
He walks over to it seeing writing.
"So close... Looks like I'm a kidnapper now.... Good luck finding me.... And... I so enjoyed killing that sweet wife of yours. Might do it that way again. Not to the kid tho....later Max. Ps. This game is so fun.." It says.
"He was here..." Is all he can muster as the team enters.
"He was right in this house and I missed it because her son freaked over weed and ran..." He says as another officer speaks to him gently.
"Don't beat yourself up Detective, it's not your fault. He must have hid before you got her and left after you arrived." The words do little to comfort him "First day back on the job and the killer escaped taking a child..." He says as he walks away.
The chief arrives in his new lexus with a screeching of rubber as he lurches to a halt.
He quickly exits and leaves his door hanging open as he rushes into Max's face....
"I told you to stay away from this case MAX!!!!....(takes a breath)...
"If I catch any flak from my superiors, I won't suspend you.... That'd be to easy. Desk duty and an entry level demotion. The new guy will have a higher rank than you if things go my way.... Now get outta my sight...". "(Sighs)...
"This job is gonna be the death of me..." He says walking away from Max and towards the Coroner's van..... ..... .....
On the way home the detective stops by the store close to his house which is unlike him because he usually follows the same routine.
He nears the front door and he hears a kitchen timer ding loudly from behind him as his car explodes throwing him through the storefront windows as they are blown out..... .....
Alarms around the lot and others nearby create a cacophony of noise. His head pounding as his body aches, Max pushes himself up and collapses as the store manager runs over to him telling him not to move as he dials 911.... .... ....
Waking in the hospital Max recalls the feeling of the Shockwave as he flinches in phantom pain.
"Who woulda thought its like holding a ringing metal bat that hurts your hands but all over and way more intense." He thinks.
He suddenly feels tired and falls asleep.... .... .... ....
The next time he wakes, he sees a breaking news story that Jane Saltani is reporting on....
"Young toddler Accidently Shoots Serial killekidnapper ending his life and Alerting residents in the Area." The news anchor says.
Sighing to himself Max thinks about how crazy that is and laughs.
Tho he really wanted to bring the guy in. He closes his eyes to get some much needed sleep as his door opens.
Max looks up to see a man with a silenced pistol pointed at him.
"Hm. Now they think I'm dead. Funny how they just assume they got the right guy. Just like.... You did Detect... ....." Max hears but then hears no more as his end comes at just over the speed of sound....
The Caller leaves the hair of another intelligent convicted murderer that he obtained in a spot that's believable and quickly leaves.....
He disables the surveillance system and sends a virus out to any device that has received video data from the hospital.
Erasing and corrupting the systems. Leaving a master hackers finger prints on a glass from his home....
"Sorry, no witnesses." He says to the security guard as he fires... ..... ..... .... ....

2023.06.10 19:46 JoseLunaArts Cid Campeador was a mercenary. His bio could be easily turned into a mechwarrior biography.

After digging into literature, I found that the story of the legendary knight Cid Campeador, sounds to me like the story of a mercenary Mechwarrior, instead of the usual legend that shows him as a religious warrior. It does not take too much to export this story to Battletech universe, and indeed I plan to add a version of him to my Mechwarrior Destiny game at some point.
The following is a summary of "Historia Roderici" an old Spanish text that may likely be inaccessible to English speaking readers, not only because of language barrier, but also because of the ancient Spanish words that are difficult to understand even for modern Spanish speakers. You will discover that Cid Campeador was not a religious hero, but a merc.
I believe it could be used as source material to inspire a novel.
Sorry about the long read, but it still shorter than the original "Historia Roderici".
------------------------------------------------
Rodrigo "Ruy" Díaz de Vivar is also known as Cid Campeador, and some people believe he was a religious hero but others see him as a mercenary. The oldest biography is "Historia Roderici" in 1190 when the Castillan warrior had passed away 80 years ago. This biography was made popular via minstrels, and it incorporated many fictional episodes that composed "Cantar del Mio Cid" around the year 1200. For example, there is no evidence that Rodrigo had 2 swords called Tisona and Colada, and a horse called Babieca. He had 2 daughters but they were not named doña Sol and doña Elvira.
Spain was invaded in the year 711 from the south and only a small strip was left at the north where Christian kings would seek a safe haven. The invaders ruling lasted for 800 years but these years also were full of internal disputes, just like in the Inner Sphere.
The war in Spain was always portrayed as a holy war, like a Jihad. This was the time where the term "pariah" was born. The non Christian rulers paid tribute called pariah to Christian kings in exchange for protection. And that was the historical context of eternal war.
Rodrigo was born in the small town of Vivar, near Burgos. His father was a low rank noble, but his mother was from the elite of nobles, daughter of count of Oviedo. The last name Diaz indicated he was son of Diego. When he was 10, his father died, and he was sent to the court of Fernando I de León, to complete his education with the sons of the king. One of the sons, Sancho turned Rodrigo into his page and became close friends. He receives high education and learned to fight. He knew how to read and write, something very uncommon.
When Rodrigo was 15 he went with don Sancho to Zaragoza, a territory which was under the protection of Fernando I de León in exchange for pariah. Ramiro I de Aragón uncle of Fernando I de León wanted the land under protection, and this is how Sancho and his "mesnadas" (forces under command of a lord) went to help. Ramiro I not only was defeated, but also died.
When Fernando I (ruler of Galicia, León and Castilla) died, he distributed his kingdom among his 5 sons instead of having a linear succession, because Alfonso, his second son, was his favorite. Sancho ruled Castilla and had the right to collect the pariah of Zaragoza. Sancho did not like the distribution of land, as he felt he should have been the heir of the whole kingdom. He entered a conflict with his siblings. Rodrigo ended up being in charge of the army of Sancho. In his first one on one match defeated the Alferez of Navarra kingdom, Jimeno Arcés. This is where he earned the title of "campeador", which means he is a master of the battlefield.
After his mother died, Sancho started war against Alfonso. Rodrigo skill surfaced among all other warriors. Sancho won the battle, but Alfonoso escaped and did not surrender as agreed. Instead, Alfonso agreed to allow Sancho to conquer Galicia ruled by his younger brother García. García was defeated and was and outcast who escaped to the taifa of Sevilla. But that did not end the war with Alfonso. In the new battle, Rodrigo skill shined again. And Alfonso was defeated once again. Alfonso was an outcast too, and he went to the taifa of Toledo. The reunification war ended. But it would last a few months.
Zamora was ruled by his sister Urraca. Many nobles gathered there and they did not embrace Sanho as the king. Urraca supported them, and supported Alfonso. Sancho sieged Zamora for months, but it did cost Sancho's life at the hands of a Zamoran warrior, and not even Rodrigo could stop that. The killer pretended to defecte from Urraca city and earned Sancho's trust. The defector Bellido Dolfos was going to show him a weak spot in the walls of Zamora, and when Sanch went to the loo, the defector took Sancho's spear and killed him. Alfonso became king. García attempted to recover his kingdom but ended in prison where he died. Alfonso married Rodrigo with doña Jimena, relative of Alfonso and apparently Rodrigo was deeply in love with her.
Rodrigo was sent to collect Paria To Sevilla, and García Ordoñez, close friend of alfonso was sent to Granada. Granada ruler asked Ordoñez to attack Sevilla and that Rodrigo had to fight García Ordoñez and made him prisoner and set him free later. García Ordoñez accused Rodrigo of stealing a portion of the pariah of Sevilla, which are believed to be the gift of Sevilla ruler to Rodrigo for defending his land.
Alfonso went to Taifa of Toledo, and Rodrigo was sick at home. There was an attack on a castle and Rodrigo reacted without asking for permission, chased the attackers who entered Toledo territory and Rodrigo took a huge loot, Alfonso was so upset because that destroyed Alfonso's plans to own Toledo without a fight. García Ordoñez presented this to Alfonso as an attempt to make people from Toledo to kill Alfonso. So Rodrigo became an outcast, and he was exiled and had to make a living. Along the road, many men joined him. He went to Zaragoza to offer his services. Now Zaragoza should not have to pay pariah to different kingdoms for protection.
This contradicts the jihadist nature of Rodrigo as a religious warrior. After the ruler of Zaragoza died, his 2 sons also fought. Rodrigo stood in the side of Zaragoza, and the opponent sought help among the kings in the north. The enemy forces outnumbered Rodrigo's but he defeated them in the battle of Almenar.
An uncle of the ruler of Zaragoza, who was prisoner of Alfonso, earned the trust of the alcalde who controlled the prison, so the alcalde passed the message to Alfonso. The uncle offered him the castle of Zaragoza in exchange for paying the pariah to Alfonso. So Alfonso marched towards Zaragoza. But Alfonso this time was not ahead of the forces. He sent scouts who were killed. It seems that the uncle died while the expedition was on its way to Zaragoza, so the alcalde had the idea of becoming an ally of Zaragoza and tried to kill king Alfonso.
Later Alfonso met Rodrigo and Rodrigo told that he had no part in that betrayal, and Alfonso and Rodrigo went back to normal relations without hard feelings.
Alfonso managed to conquer Toledo and that meant a raise in the pariah for other taifas. But religious fundamentalist fanatics from northern Africa were asked to help and their fanatism made them fearsome. Alfonso had Zaragoza under siege, and Rodrigo did not want to fight Alfonso. But news came from the new invaders and the siege stopped. Then the battle of Sagrajas came, where Alfonso suffered a defeat. Alfonso had to escape to save his life. Rodrigo went to Toledo to offer his services to Alfonso.
Alfonso commissioned Rodrigo to take care of the invaders and conquer lands, and to collect the pariah from Zaragoza, which had Rodrigo working as a merc for 6 years.
But good relations did not last. During a campaign Rodrigo was supposed to reinforce Alfonso's forces, but Rodrigo did not arrive. Rodrigo was exiled for second time after García Ordoñez made the king feel betrayed. Alfonso took his property and made his family prisoner. Rodrigo begged and his family was set free. And he became a warlord in Valencia and fought against both sides.
Rodrigo suffered an attack and he took revenge against García Ordoñez and led an expedition to do exactly that and looted along his way. Alfonso gave away these lands and no one wanted to fight Rodrigo. Now the only enemies of Rodrigo were the invaders in the south who attacked Valencia and killed its ruler. Rodrigo sieged the city and help did not arrive so they surrendered, and Rodrigo self proclaimed himself prince.
The invader Almoraviles forces were obsessed with taking Valencia. And epic battles took place.

2023.06.10 19:39 Awkwardpawners Need advice badly, I don't know what to do when my needs are not being met

Incoming long post, I'm sorry I'm just desperate for help.
I'm a (23 M) having issues with my needs not being met by my (24F) partner and I'm too scared to tell her about it.
I've been with her for a long time now about 5 years, we met in Highschool she is the only girlfriend I ever had whilst she had multiple partners before me, we were able to work things out despite our personalities being exact opposite, When we started I was 17 and we were incredibly sexually charged.
We had been in a relationship for 2 years then but we ended breaking up because I was too sexually charged and it might've been unattractive to her, never the less I loved her with all I have.
That break-up was devastating to me as she was my first of everything, I'm an introvert and human connection is very precious to me specially her because she was the one who "saved" me when my mother passed away.
It also didn't help that immediately after we broke up 3 months she already had another guy, not to mention I tried mending our relationship before then while someone was also courting her. She had a boyfriend who was well knowned in our school and we have heard rumours about them being sexually active as well.
It caused me to develop multiple issues such as I had trouble trusting people leaving me unable to find a partner as I've doubted that the relationship will last, It also caused me to revolt the idea of sex as for me it became the reason why we broke up and It was the only thing that I could blame. The effect was too great that I didn't really know what I wanted to do with life anymore, Failed going to college, I went with the flow and ended up applying for a job simply because I had nothing to do, no desire to do anything.
This lasted for 3 years, until I finally developed feelings for another person my Bestfriend (f) this person also had feelings for me. I was clear to her that I'm interested in her and based on our conversations we had we have a similar sex drive. So I courted her giving her efforts and started hanging out with her but she said she isn't interested yet in a long term relationship.
while this attempt didn't really worked out I believe this helped me realize that I can fall in love again, that it's possible for me to make another human connection, I just had to try.
and so I had started flirting with many girls and to my surprise some are interested, I was able to trust people again, open up with them, have sexually charged conversations, some even are sexually open to the point that they are okay with being invited to a hotel.
during this time my Ex gf now (22) got in touch with me again, I told her that I haven't found someone else yet that made me feel the same way she did but I was working on it. This caused her to get interested to me again as she had failed with her relationship that came after me ( the person that came after me was verbally abusive, and they had issues with religion).
So we got back together, to my surprise she was incredible sexually aggresive at me. Due to my previous experience with Her I was not planning to have sex with her and besides my sex drive is no longer that high. But I was too starved for human touch and ended up succumbimg to it, in our first year we are very happy, It felt like everything is working perfectly well now. It helped me get back and continue my studies whilst I help her with hers and worked out our relationship, I believe our frequent sex bought back my sex drive.
Fast forward to now, We are still very happy with each other, we can open up about everything except sometimes about financial, she is Graduating now and I just finished my first year in college. I had notice that in the past few (6) months she is no longer sexually active with me anymore, multiple times I have been rejected and nowadays I'm lucky if we have sex once a week. And now the build up frustration is getting in to me as of the moment we had not sex for a month, nothing has change though we are still incredibly in love with each other and cheating is not in the equation.
But I believe this sexual dissatisfaction is affecting me greatly, I am too afraid to open it up to her because it has been the reason of our previous break up, It makes me feel bad that jrking off doesn't really solve it it just makes me feel even more sad.
I don't really know what to do, I believe myself to be not needy at all aside from sex, I want to make things work out for us but I really do believe we are sexually incompatible.

2023.06.10 19:38 Mugwumpen Writing feelgood fantasy - would you read a story without a huge climax or resolution between a protagonist and an antagonist?

I have a story in mind, but the maincharacter isn't part of the war. She's not starting or leading a revolution. There's no letter that'll change her whole future. No marriage to a king or queen where she must learn how to navigate through the labyrinth of lies that is the court and is unwillingly pulled into a deadly plot against the crown. She's not discovering previously unknown magical abilities and must now face her destiny and defeat her super-evil brother-in-law.
It's basically the equivalent of two friends teaming up in chasing down a question of mistaken identity where a client's cat has gone missing from the grooming salon they're running. Except the cat is a dragon. A very expensive dragon belonging to an influential client. When the resolution happens, the maincharacter is only a small part of it, as the biggest mess in question isn't actually her responsibility to fix. She's just a dragon groomer after all.
Sometimes what I'm really longing for when wanting to read fantasy is Elevenses at Bilbo Baggins', or Christmas at Hogwarts. Something cosy and stressfree, but fantastical and magical at the same time - a world to get lost in without the fear of a character losing their head.
I'm mostly writing this story for me, but I'm curious if this concept - no devestating conflict or grand resolution between a hero and villain, where the maincharacter is just your average Jane - is something other people enjoy reading too so long as you find the setting and characters engaging?

2023.06.10 19:34 Imaginary_Act5759 Temp. Custody of Minor During Mothers Manic Phase

Good day everyone, just a quick thank you to any and all who read and offer advice. I’ll try to be concise and keep out certain specificities out of respect for the minor involved. My girlfriends little sister is soon to be 18 within less than half a year. Her mother is going through a manic bipolar phase. She has been kicked out of my house, her sons house, her boyfriends house, and her sisters house on different and recent occasions because of stealing, lying, drugs, and manipulation (all of which are well documented and we have weak proof e.I. Things that may or may not be sustainable in court).
My girlfriends sister is living with us while her mother is in and out of a behavioral hospital. The mother is completely okay with this because to an extent we are all cordial and understand this is what’s best for the minor. We are concerned that as the mothers mental health becomes worse and more volatile she may try to take her daughter out of no where and run. She has no job, no place to live, and is living off a government stipend she gets for raising the daughter (daughters father is deceased military so survivor benefits).
We want to explore, the minor emancipating herself (but believe the minor requires a job/ full self sustainability which she lacks). Or a temporary guardianship where myself and my girlfriend become temp guardian as we have a house, are both employed with good jobs, and have been together for nearly 7 years. We believe the mother may be open to this option but want to be prepared if she’s not (want to know what the legal battle may look like if we need to go forward with it).
The final option feels like subterfuge. Keep minimal contact with the mother, keep the mom happy so she doesn’t snap and try to run away with the daughter, for the next half year until the minor is 18.
