2023.05.29 00:35 Cornconic Please read this. I'm all out of options and I desperately need your help.

To whom it may concern: this message is of the utmost importance. Please do not disregard it. I don’t know for sure what website you’ll be seeing this on, whoever you are. Probably something submission-based, hopefully one where it stays up. Regardless, it is imperative that you keep reading. I’ll explain why soon, but before I do, some context is in order.
My brother was a brilliant man. Brilliantly talented, brilliantly clever. It was difficult growing up in his shadow. We were raised in the same nurturing, middle-upper class environment, with two loving parents that encouraged us at every turn, but it seemed there was nothing I could do that he wouldn’t outshine me at. He was no savant, you see. Julian held his own in any situation, whether that be an exam or a party with friends. Hardly ever was he not the smartest person in the room, or the most popular.
Needless to say, I was a jealous sibling. My main source of bother was academic performance. I’m not an idiot, even in comparison to my brother, but I was an underachiever for a long period of my adolescence. I’m not sure what I’d attribute it to. Hanging around the wrong people, perhaps, having my head in the clouds, something like that. I’ve always been intelligent, but for a while I really struggled to knuckle down and use that intellect. For so long, I heard the same tired expression: “if you’d only apply yourself…” I’m sure some of you reading this can relate. It wasn’t until many years later that that sentiment really rang true.
I never outright hated Julian, but I have to admit there was invariably a growing seed of resentment in my heart for him, especially as we got older and his natural aptitude really began to shine. We both had an interest in computer science from a young age, most likely inherited from our father, who worked for Microsoft before they went out of business. I still remember those nights as kids when he’d sit us down in front of his computer and show us all the little intricacies of the code he was working on. Any other children our age would be bored out of their skulls, but there we sat, attentive as ever, our developing minds fascinated by the job’s seemingly endless possibilities. Julian’s other main curiosity, which I did not share, was an affinity towards online horror fiction, though he grew out of that kind of stuff in his late teens.
He knew I had a chip on my shoulder. Mostly, he was apathetic towards it; we were never estranged, but he wasn’t going to let my discontent get in the way of his success. Though I don’t blame him, I suppose that was always Julian’s downfall. He was just too headstrong, too confident.
When we became adults, we parted ways. He went on to study at Harvard while I ended up dropping out of some bang-average local university you won’t have heard of. Following that, things were a little rough. My parents were fairly disappointed. They didn’t cut me off, rather, interacting with them became a depressing chore as they waited for their son to get his life together. At family gatherings, I gritted my teeth at the stories Julian told: developing virtual reality hardware, cutting-edge stuff, pushing the boundaries of the way we interact with technology, all while I was couch-surfing, barely making ends meet as the IT guy at a shitty school in a town I hated. It only made the prospect of snapping out of whatever haze I was in feel more difficult.
It all changed one day soon after I got my first apartment. Julian showed up out of the blue on a dewy morning with an armful of equipment and a huge, beaming smile on his face. I let him in, we talked, and he promised that what he was going to show me would completely blow my mind.
I watched as he paced about my living room setting up all his gadgetry. As soon as everything was ready, he switched on my computer and handed me a thin, plastic headset with exposed wires. Two nodes hung from either side of the thing, which fitted snugly over my temples. While I sat back on the sofa and stared at the monitor before me, he gave me one simple instruction.
“Type something into Google.”
“But I don’t have a keyboard.”
“You don’t need one.”
According to Julian’s wishes, I simply thought about the action, and it happened. The word “something” came up in the search box, and my jaw dropped open in shock. At first, I thought the obvious, that my brother was purposefully fooling me with some kind of prank or gimmick, but repeated tests all came up with the same result. And it wasn’t just searching I could do telepathically, but anything. Literally anything I could think of, limited to the capabilities of the computer, of course. I had total control. There was even a sort of projection in my mind’s eye as it was happening, like the process was actually occurring inside my brain. It wasn’t perfect, but it was nothing short of amazing.
“You’re one of the first people to try it,” he told me once I’d tested everything out. “We’re calling it NeuroWorks, or something to that effect.”
I don’t think that feeling of astonishment ever truly left me. It was then that I realised my petty indignation, the dissatisfaction I felt after so many years of being outclassed, meant nothing in the face of my brother’s achievements, and I would be doing the world a disservice by failing to assist him. Julian departed that night after some drinks and a few laughs, and the next day, I enrolled once again for a degree in computer science. Four years later, I passed with flying colours, and Julian hired me to work for him at his company. There may have been a bit of nepotism involved, but that’s neither here nor there.
The next few years were dizzying. During the time in which I was getting (re)educated, Julian had been working with a team of elite neuroscientists, specialists that filled in the gaps in his knowledge, did all the things he couldn’t. Immediately, I felt I was in way over my head, but as my learning advanced, I gradually got up to speed, and my mood improved quite rapidly. That feeling of pride, like I was finally doing something productive with my life, was nothing short of fantastic, especially in the face of so many wasted years. I was never quite on Julian’s level, of course, but with enough time, I grew to be a valued contributor to the NeuroWorks project. Off the back of a long period of arduous work, the device fully came to fruition, culminating in an international commercial release.
It was a global success, and we made a fortune. Once we’d fully optimised it, it ended up being surprisingly cheap to produce and implement. The result was its adoption in billions of households and businesses. As expected, it completely changed the way we live and work in the virtual world. Worldwide productivity and efficiency increased tenfold. Even now, I’m typing this message with those same two nodes attached at either side of my head, hands-free. As cliched as it sounds, at that point, it truly felt like we were living in the future.
Honestly, I would’ve been happy to stop there. I could’ve moved somewhere green and sunny, spent the rest of my days doing TED Talks and sipping cocktails on the balcony of a villa, not giving a single damn. But not Julian. Like always, Julian had his eyes set on further horizons, on the subsequent stretch of progress. No sooner than a few months after NeuroWorks was released did he come up with his next magnificent idea.
“Consciousness splicing.”
That was how he described it on the day he first sat me down to try and explain. We were outside a café, some pretentious, gentrified establishment in the heart of London, with a coffee each.
“The next stage of human learning, or maybe even existence as a whole. NeuroWorks, compared to this…it’s just a stepping stone, Alex,” he told me. “If we get this right, we won’t just be able to use computers with our minds, we’ll be able to think like them, too.”
I struggled to wrap my head around the concept. “How do you mean, exactly?” I replied.
“Take what makes us sentient. Our minds, our passion, our free will. Everything a machine lacks. How can it be improved? How can it be bettered? What we lack naturally, we as a species, I mean, can be found in a computer. The processing power, the boundless memory, the objectivity. Not to mention the ability to conjure up any kind of information on a whim, the entire collective library of human knowledge, dating back thousands of years. But there are limitations. Computers can’t truly think for themselves. Not yet, anyway. They require input, direction. If we can intersect the strengths of man and machine, cross the gap that separates us…”
He was stirring his drink all the while. Julian had a thing about that: he could never look at you directly when he was thinking, like the image of your baffled face would put him off somehow.
“Okay, but you’re talking purely in theoretical terms, right? We’re centuries off reaching that point. I mean, creating a neural link between a person and Mac OS is one thing-
“I think it’s possible.”
A beat passed before he sighed, grabbed a napkin, and produced a pen from his pocket. I waited as he sketched out a crude, yet complicated diagram. I can’t recall it exactly – it was something to do with the relationship between time, space, and information. Far more philosophical than scientific, I remember thinking.
“The internet is a powerful beast. Our means of controlling it, of accessing it, even with NeuroWorks, are subpar. We just need another breakthrough, and then that could open the door for who knows what else. Traversing through decades online, going back and forth whenever we want-
“Easier said than done.”
“But it could be possible. It could.”
“I disagree. Not in our lifetimes, anyway. And even if it is, it sounds…dangerous. Very dangerous. The number of things that could go wrong, the variables…it doesn’t bear thinking about. We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. Let’s learn to walk before we run, eh?”
He was quiet after that. The conversation stuck with me for the next couple of years. We were working mostly on maintaining NeuroWorks at that time, delivering a steady stream of updates and enhancements as society began to mold itself around its advent. There was some discussion as to when the next big leap forward would be, the next huge announcement from Julian’s company, but he remained tight-lipped about anything regarding that.
It was then that he started acting…weird. I saw him less and less in what was supposed to be our spare time together. The cancelled reservations and missed family events added up, but whenever I asked him about it, he just shrugged it off. “I’m a workaholic,” he would say. “You know you all mean the world to me, but so does this job.” I tried to comfort myself with that, but deep down, I think I knew he was hiding something. Something he thought would worry me, that was outside my area of expertise. I was going to confront him about it eventually. I just ended up waiting too long.
One night, he rang me out of nowhere. I remember shooting straight up into a sitting position in a pitch-black room – I think I’d been having a nightmare. The metallic surface of my phone was cold and smooth in my sweaty palm as I picked up the call and pressed it to my temple.
“Meet me at this address in half an hour. And be quick.”
I spoke a word or two in return, but the call had already ended. There was a soft blip, and some postcode I didn’t recognise appeared at the top of the screen.
Doing exactly as my brother asked, I got up, got changed, and made the 20-minute journey by car.
The place was a run-down warehouse in one of the rougher areas of town, where property prices were at their cheapest. I parked up and stepped outside, shivering as I cursed myself for not having the foresight to bring a thicker jacket. It wasn’t immediately obvious which building I was looking for, until I saw a flash of light through a broken window in the distance. Cautiously, I approached it, glancing around to assure myself I wasn’t walking into a trap, as stupid as that thought was. The main door being completely boarded up meant an obscured gap in the brickwork was my entry point.
Dodging the tiny droplets of water trickling in from the broken ceiling, I rounded a corner. The main, spacious area of the warehouse had been kitted out as a kind of makeshift workshop, near identical to a setup from NeuroWorks. It was as if someone had carved out one of our labs and dumped it here, beside walls of crumbling paint. My brow was furrowed as I stared from a distance at the scurrying scientists, who flicked me awkward looks as they went about tending to a central apparatus. I recognised a few of them, but they paid me little mind. I’m sure they knew I was coming.
It took me a few moments to realise, but Julian was part of the almighty cluster of machinery in the middle of it all. His body was a biological cog in an otherwise artificial setup; he was on his back, head tilted slightly forwards, arms splayed in a t-pose like he was being crucified. I’ll never get that image out of my head: him lying there, not having quite noticed me yet, sweat upon his brow. He was shirtless, too, wires running up and down his arms and a mesh inserted atop his shaved head, which was next to a monitor. The wires came down in gangly clumps off the side of the ‘bed’ he was on and fed into this gargantuan hunk of steel by his side. It was truly massive, topped with blinking lights and seemingly missing its outer casing. If I didn’t know better, I’d have assumed he’d been kidnapped and experimented on.
He looked at me, directly upwards from his perspective, and said, “You’re late,” through a smile.
I wasn’t smiling. “Julian, what the fuck is all of this?”
“I apologise for not telling you sooner. Truth be told, I didn’t want you to worry. But this is too important for you not to see.”
I was at a loss for words.
“What we’re going to do here, today, right now, will change the course of humanity. And you need to be here to witness it. So get ready. We’re starting!
He shouted that last sentence, and all the scientists in the room shuffled to what could only be described as their ‘posts’. I merely watched as they started a countdown sequence of sorts, dutifully coordinating the machine through a large control panel. They communicated with short, snappy gestures and mumbled technobabble that I could barely pay attention to. Instinctively, I stepped back until I was at an arbitrarily ‘safe’ distance.
Seconds later, my mouth turned dry and a quiet ringing in my ears began to form. I chalked it up to nerves initially, but it soon became apparent there was some kind of static in the air, palpable interference that manifested in a painful shock as my hand grazed the shiny edge of a worksurface. It seemed to be emanating from the middle of the room, where Julian was. His eyes were closed now, tightly; he gave the impression of someone concentrating very intently on something.
There was a hum, so low you almost felt it before you heard it, slowly increasing in pitch. I suddenly had a headache, and I’m almost certain my hair was standing up under the confines of my flat cap. Panic surfaced within me as I noticed the scientists arguing. I shouted a word of protest, only to realise my ears had popped, and the faint ringing from earlier now sounded like a cacophonous bout of tinnitus.
Something was clearly and utterly wrong. Julian’s deathly stillness as he honed his thoughts had ended, and he was now thrashing around, foaming at the mouth, unable to break free of his confines. I ran back over to his side-
“Don’t touch me!” He managed to force out. I could barely hear him, but the crazed look in his eyes, dilated like a cat’s, convinced me to leave him alone. Instead, I focused my attention on the scientists.
“What are you maniacs doing to him?” I yelled. “Fucking switch that thing off! Now!”
One of them came and pushed me away. His mouth was moving, but I couldn’t make out the words. The noise of the machine was just too loud. There was a collective moment of fear as the tone became ear-splitting. No-one could hear anyone anymore.
Julian looked like he was being possessed. My attention was drawn to the monitor beside him; before, it had been inert, but it was currently displaying a fast-moving, almost psychedelic kaleidoscope of uniform shapes and colours. If you’ve ever seen what a computer looks like when you remove its RAM while it’s running, it was like that, but even more erratic and animated. I was practically hypnotised by it, and as I gazed further and further into its depths, an awful image began to emerge.
It was Julian. I swear to god, I know it sounds crazy, but Julian’s face materialised in the form of this…nightmarish coalescence of text and code. His mouth was open, and his eyes were bulging out of his skull. I turned to my brother to see him doing the exact same expression there on the table, unable to breathe. It made me feel sick to my stomach.
Suddenly, the machine shut down, taking the monitor’s display and oppressive interference with it. Julian’s eyes glazed over, his face went pale as a sheet, and he slumped down onto his back, letting out a huge exhale. It was when he didn’t take another breath that two white-coated men went to check his pulse.
A single head shake between them confirmed what I feared. Gone.
I think I was in shock the whole rest of the night, because I didn’t speak a word to anyone until the morning. They sent me home in a taxi and promised to take care of what had happened. I burst into furious, bitter tears as soon as I put the keys in the door. I was so, so angry at being kept in the dark and lied to for so long, with this having been the culmination. Little did I know that was just the beginning.
Julian’s team called me into work the next day for a private meeting. To maintain the company’s work and appearance, they were going to sweep the whole thing under the rug. Fucking figures, I remember thinking. My first urge, naturally, was to fight this burial, to expose them and bring about some sense of justice, but I was talked down from it. You might call me cowardly for that, but put yourself in my shoes for a minute; I had no real evidence at hand, and it soon became apparent that the scientists were only operating under my brother’s command. Everything had been planned out in advance, even the system that was being followed now, for what would happen if a fatal accident occurred. Telling the world the true events of that night would’ve been a losing battle – already, they’d began cleaning up their mess – demolishing the warehouse lab, scrubbing all evidence from the archives, etc. It was a tough call, but I felt compelled to adhere to my brother’s wishes and keep moving forward with NeuroWorks. You can judge me for that if you want, but I don’t care.
I forgave them all over time. It wasn’t even really their fault Julian had died that night – there’d been a freak malfunction with the equipment, leading to them being unable to turn it off. I won’t go too in-depth; there’s a lot about it that I still don’t understand to this day. Anyway, once the dust had settled, we put the incident behind us and gave up the whole ‘cutting-edge’ angle for a while. We started pursuing safer technological ventures like media creation, but that was when something strange began happening.
You see, Julian’s cause of death seemed obvious initially – most likely a heart attack or stress-related aneurysm – but the autopsy revealed something startling. There was little to no internal damage anywhere in his body: no burst blood vessels or spasmed arteries. Rather, all the electrical signals in his body had simply vanished simultaneously, deactivating his brain. It was as if he had literally been switched off.
None of this ever got out, of course. NeuroWorks, now one of the most valuable, powerful companies of all time, made sure of that. Julian’s death was publicly credited as a stroke due to undetected high cholesterol levels. But it’s certainly interesting considering what came after.
Over the next few weeks, we had virus troubles. A malicious software was making its way through our computer system. There was a bit of a panic to begin with; an internal investigation revealed we had far too much unsecured data that anyone working for a market competitor would be happy to steal and sell to the highest bidder, but the more we found out about it, the more curious we became. The strange thing about it was only partly what it did. Corruption and deletion are pretty bog-standard as far as viruses go, but its effects were largely patternless, like it was picking items at complete random. But it was also when it was doing it. After some research, we found that people had been complaining about this mystery malware they’d designated as ‘WerStar’ (due to the word apparently repeating itself over and over again in damaged code and text boxes) since the beginning of the internet. Despite this, its existence had never been formally documented anywhere, which is extremely bizarre. Whatever WerStar is, it’s completely transcendent of time.
We think we know what’s going on, though. We had our ideas to begin with, and there were plenty of skeptics amongst us, but a recent event has all but verified it. A couple of months ago, I found a .txt file on my computer that wasn’t there the day before, entitled ‘WerStargift’. It was an enormous mass of code that took weeks to fully analyse. Delving into the nitty gritty of the whole thing would take forever, but from what we’ve been able to glean from it (and I promise I’m being serious when I say this), it’s a formula for communicating virtually with the past.
Which brings us to today. Well, our today. We’re sending this message from the year 2050 to what we’ve calculated to be the mid-2010s. Myself and Julian should only be little children. Don’t worry, this isn’t some Terminator-style mission to erase or alter a former timeline. We just need you to tell us something.
The code wasn’t the only thing in the .txt file. There was a message, a message we can’t read. It’s been cobbled together on an old, outdated editor that isn’t compatible with the modern NeuroWorks setup anymore. Believe me, we’ve tried everything, but not even old computers will display it. We think our failure to view it is the whole reason we’re even able to talk to you now. In your time, it should still be legible. You may need to do something with it, view it through a Source editor, perhaps, but it won’t be hard to decipher.
You should be able to communicate with us, too. Hopefully. We’ve tested this with random forums – dozens of messages we made that were supposedly sent in 2012, and had people respond to them in that same year. We’re well aware of the danger associated with this, but at the same time, it’s the only chance we’ve got.
I’m going to wrap this up by apologising. I’m sorry that I haven’t been more specific throughout this message; there’s a lot I’ve glossed over in the pursuit of keeping things relatively short. Maybe this is just a lost cause – the technology we’re using is still extremely unrefined, so there’s a chance this might not even get out there. But it’s been 10 years since Julian ‘died’, and I’d give anything to be able to see my brother again. If this works, if we’re able to somehow establish contact, then we may even be able to reverse the process, to find him a human host.
So, please, for the love of God, please, what does it say? Where is Julian?

2023.05.28 18:09 MyManSteveBuscemi Political Positions (and their underlying moral beliefs)

Abortion:

The standard liberal position: As far as we know, fetuses are not conscious and have never been conscious. This means that while it is maybe not harmless to terminate a fetus, it must be weighed against others harms that the fetus might cause: harm to the mother's body, wrecking the mother's life, harming a community by requiring it support the fetus, etc. By this calculation, it sometimes reduce overall harm to terminate a pregnancy before fetal viability.
The standard conservative position: A fetus does not have to be viable outside the womb to be considered a human life. It is alive, it has numerous human functions before it is "viable", and it has its own unique human genome. For that reason, terminating a pregnancy is nearly equivalent to killing a viable baby, and so it should be considered more harmful than any amount of harm the fetus might do the mother or society, excluding if there is a reasonable risk of the mother dying if the fetus is not terminated.

LGB People:

The standard liberal position: There is nothing inherently moral about romantic or sexual attraction between the opposing sexes, and attraction among the same sex is equally moral. Marriage between same-sex people should be legally equivalent to marriage between opposite-sex people. The various accommodations that have to made for same-sex couples to reproduce (surrogacy, baby formula, etc.) are standard accommodations that many straight couples utilize, so it follows that the care that children of a same-sex couple receive is not any worse than that of the average straight couple.
The standard conservative position: Society does not well distinguish between legal marriage and religious marriage, and by the rules of most religion, there can be no marriage between two people of the same sex. Same-sex relationships, when kept private, do not cause significant harm on a community, but the enthusiastic promotion of same-sex relationships can confuse children and threaten the social norm of straight relationships. Being a responsible, committed spouse and parent is already difficult, and when too many people in the community promote alternative lifestyles, from open relationships, to gay relationships to divorce, to other non-traditional and/or hedonistic lifestyles, it can threaten social stability and make it difficult for children and young adults to walk the straight-and-narrow (no pun intended).

Trans People:

The standard liberal position: The purpose of sex and gender as categories are to serve human interests, so if they get in the way of human interests, they should be re-defined to be more useful to society. If a person feels tremendous pain from being associated socially with a certain sex or gender, then it benefits the society to associate that person with the opposite sex or gender. Insisting that a person is a specific gender will create unnecessary conflict, while including that person as the gender they want to be creates a more unified and supportive social fabric.
The standard conservative position: Sex and gender are vitally important categories, that should never be shifted just because they are causing pain to people. If a person feels tremendous pain from being associated socially with a certain sex or gender, that person should receive counseling and social support to embrace their assigned gender because there is no good reason for a person to feel upset about their sex or gender any more than they feel upset about their hair color or height. We should be teaching people that their sex and gender, while unchangeable, do not define their personality, and that it has always been socially tolerable for men to act "feminine" in certain ways and for women to act "masculine" in certain ways.

Guns:

The standard liberal position: Guns are extremely dangerous, and you should have to prove some level of responsibility to possess one. Especially as mental illness becomes more prevalent in society, guns pose a serious risk to the safety of our citizens and we must make it more difficult for guns to end up in the hands of evil and mentally ill people.
The standard conservative position: Guns are extremely dangerous, but so are knives, and homemade bombs. It's easy to be dangerous in the modern world, and trying to disarm and disempower people so that they cannot hurt each other is not the right approach. People who are motivated will always find a way to kill each other, and so the most effective approach is to empower as many good people as possible with the power to stop evil and mentally ill people, to make better efforts to isolate and treat mentally ill people, and to better promote a culture of tolerance for one's enemies rather than one of radical hatred, resentment, and victimhood.

Immigration:

The standard liberal position: America was built on the efforts of huge numbers of immigrants, and we can continue to employ large numbers of immigrants to build out the future. American culture becomes richer with the influence of foreigners, and as long as they are working hard and paying taxes, they are a net good for our society and economy.
The standard conservative position: While immigrants can provide huge economic benefits, allowing too much immigration can pose unique threats to the country. Immigrants can establish communities where English is not spoken and where traditional American values are not practiced. They can funnel money and trade secrets back to their home countries, and they can buy large swaths of real estate in highly desirable areas. Highly skilled and intelligent immigrants and their children can also push the existing citizens out of the most prestigious colleges, and make it more difficult for existing citizens to be employed at the most desirable US companies. On the other end of the spectrum, letting in low-skilled workers, including illegal immigrants, can have similar cultural and economic risks. Should low-paid or seasonal immigrants have children in the US, those children are entitled to numerous public benefits as US citizens, and the combination of single-income households, large numbers of children, and seasonal and/or low-paid work can lead to underemployment and create an economic burden on the welfare system.

Taxes:

The standard liberal position: Taxes are a means of regulating society. They are a safety net that ensures that people can't blow all their money and starve during retirement. In general they ensure that people don't starve no matter what good or bad decisions led someone to poverty. The government might be horribly inefficient, but at least it is comprehensive: no one will be left to starve just because they don't appeal to whatever personal biases individual donors use when deciding where to donate. Progressive taxes also force the more fortunate in society: the richer, the more intelligent, the better connected, to share a larger fraction of their income with the nation, thus constituting a push towards a more egalitarian society that reduces, but certainly does not eliminate, the dominance that the lucky and powerful have over the weak and less fortunate.
The standard conservative position: Personal responsibility is king, and people should pay as little in taxes as possible to ensure only the most necessary parts of government functioning. Your social safety net should be that if you are a good person who makes good decisions, others in your community will sympathize with you and help you in a time of need, without any government compulsion required. Different people will necessarily have different abilities and different levels of success, and so long as the vast majority of hard-working, moral people have avenues to support themselves and their families, there is no need to redistribute wealth.

Climate Change:

The standard liberal position: Climate change is the greatest existential threat of our time, and we should devote a huge number of resources to the research and development of new technologies. We should also be willing to raise the cost of energy to reduce consumption and further motivate companies to develop improved technologies. Even if it hurts the growth of the economy in the short-run, we might be able to revert the climate disaster and then we can revamp the economy later.
The standard conservative position: Climate change is a mild threat in the near future, but humans will likely be able to adapt and gradually move if necessary over the next few hundred years. The cost of revving the economy now and making these adaptations later will likely be less than the cost of crippling the economy now, and possibly never getting it back online. By revving the economy now, we can focus on making as much money as possible and then we will have plenty of money to fund research and development for the necessary technologies to halt and reverse climate change, like carbon scraping, cloud manipulation, etc. However, we will not be able to afford such things if the world economy collapses due to the skyrocketing energy costs that accompany, for example, the shutting down of coal power plants. We will not able to afford investing in such technologies if the government doesn't prioritize GDP growth and goes way over its budget in funding social services, etc.

Healthcare:

The standard liberal position: The medical industrial complex monopolizes the healthcare system and engages in price-gouging, which screws over everybody to line the pockets of the insurance companies. The government needs to take greater control of the healthcare system so that the people in charge of healing you are not simultaneously incentivized to make as much profit as possible at your expense.
The standard conservative position: The medical industrial complex is allowed to monopolize the healthcare because of government subsidies and the tight connection between government and the medical companies. In a purely free-market system, each person could decide what types of health insurance and health services they are willing to pay for, and health providers would be free to compete with each other to prove to consumers that they are cheap, efficient, and helpful in the long-run.

Welfare:

The standard liberal position: The US is an extremely wealthy country, full of extremely wealthy individuals who waste extreme amounts of money. In such an abundant country, there is no reason for a family to be struggling to get enough food to eat. Regardless of what choices someone made or didn't make, if there is enough money around to relieve someone's deep suffering, we should do it. If nothing else, how can you take pride in your nation if you have people starving on the street?
The standard conservative position: Poverty is fundamentally unsolvable, especially if you consider poverty to be more than a deficiency of money. Even if you provide money to those in need, if they don't have responsibility, intelligence, or care for others, they will likely waste the money and continue to harm themselves and others. In that sense, for many of the poor, no amount of money will do much to improve their life or relieve their suffering. Your best chance at lifting people up is trying to spread a culture of responsibility, intelligence, and care for others, by providing extreme encouragement for things like working, saving money, and staying married, and extreme discouragement for things like laziness, wasting money, having children outside of marriage, etc.

Military:

The standard liberal position: The US military is far larger than necessary for any practical purpose. It is unlikely that any future war will require such a large number of conventional weaponry as opposed to, for example, nuclear weapons, bioweapons, or virtual weapons, and the cost of simply maintaining so much equipment is expensive. For these reasons, the size of the military and military spending should be reduced.
The standard conservative position: You never know what kind of conflict will break out and at what level. The entire purpose of having such a large military is to be ready for the most unlikely and worst-case scenarios, which are slightly more likely when you consider America is often expected to act as "world police" to protect NATO and other allies, and when potentially bad actors like China and Russia are investing tons into their own militaries. In that sense, the American military should be funded and kept up-to-date and strong enough to fight not only one country intent on doing harm, but any conceivable coalition of allied bad actors.

Minimum Wage

The standard liberal position: Minimum wage ensures that nobody has to work in exchange for an amount of money that is too low to reasonably live on, given the geographic region. Without minimum wage laws, people who for whatever reason cannot relocate to an area with better jobs or a cheaper cost of living are forced to work and essentially be exploited at an artificially low rate because the companies that employ them know that they are desperate and without alternatives.
The standard conservative position: People are not entitled to be able to live in the city where they currently reside. If you happen to be born in the most expensive city on Earth and do not develop any valuable skill which can net you a job that pays higher than the minimum wage, you may have to move to a different city. A company is not required to pay employees the maximum amount that they can afford. Further, some companies cannot afford to raise the minimum wage on some positions, and raising the minimum wage will push those companies out of business. This often pushes smaller business out first, and provides the lion's share of rewards to mega-corporations.

Drugs:

The standard liberal position: Drugs, especially drugs which aren't particularly lethal and don't encourage violence, like marijuana, mushrooms, or MDMA should have criminal penalties greatly reduced if not abolished. Making such things illegal just floods the court and prison systems unnecessarily.
The standard conservative position: It is theoretically tolerable or even good for drugs like marijuana, mushrooms, or MDMA to be legalized, but society has to be responsible enough to use such things responsibly, and society doesn't currently seem to be very good about acting responsibly when given full autonomy and freedom. If society shows a pattern of acting less responsibly whenever given more freedom, then the primary focus should be on encouraging people to be more responsible, and the secondary focus should be on providing yet more freedom to people. In short, we should not answer "should drugs be legal?" before we answer "How can we empower people to act more responsibly?"

Religion:

The standard liberal position: Religion can be used for good or evil, and it must constantly be put into a modern context to ensure that it is promoting the good instincts in people and not the evil ones. Religion should never be used a justification to harm "evil" people, and people can find the values of love, discipline, faithfulness, etc. with or without religion. People of various religions and no religion can live together harmoniously under a single legal system, and so that legal system should be separated fully from any religion.
The standard conservative position: Religion is a necessary stabilizing force in society. While theoretically possible for someone to be a good person without religion, in practice a lack of religion is often used to justify hedonism, nihilism, laziness, antisocial behavior, narcissism, anxiety, and the destruction of stabilizing social norms. Religion is uniquely effective at giving people a sense of duty, responsibility, and purpose, and until modern society finds an effective replacement for religion, increased religiosity should be encouraged.

Death Penalty:

Standard liberal position: Human beings never have the right to kill other human beings. When it is undeniable that someone has committed a heinous violent crime, they should be isolated from the population, but efforts should still be made to ensure that they are treated humanely. No matter how guilty they seem, it could come out years later that they were innocent.
Standard conservative position: Human rights are for people who are not rapists and murderers. While the state should not be given power to execute people on circumstantial evidence, when is is absolutely undeniable that someone has committed a heinous violent crime, killing them is just, economically efficient, and provides maximal protection for the innocent in society.

Police:

Standard liberal position: Police are granted a huge amount of power and legal leeway in the US, and thus should be held to an extremely high level of responsibility. Any misconduct should be punished immediately and harshly, and the repeated evidence that there is little accountability in police departments shows that the entire system is corrupt and needs total rehauling.
Standard conservative position: While police who engage in misconduct should be punished, police are also human and need a small amount of leeway to do their job. They are often in life-or-death situations, and making the perfect decision every single time is not a realistic standard. The vast majority of police interaction, including with minorities, is positive, and while we should always criticize them for their corruption and failures and pressure them to be better, at the end of the day the police, even at the current level of corruption, are a net force for good. The good cops should be respected, and it's almost never a good idea to cut funding on police, especially in high crime neighborhoods.

2023.05.28 17:23 darkerenergy Trip Report: 18 days + Golden Week (25/04 - 13/05)

Tokyo - Yokohama - Nagoya - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo

Hi all, going to go through our trip covering golden week and time around it (: It was myself (F21) and my partner (M24) and the reasoning behind the timing was mainly due to bank holidays in the UK being unfortunately placed perfectly in line with golden week this year! Despite this, I feel we actually got pretty lucky with it all. I'll put an emoji to note which days were for golden week but for the tl;dr we weren't affected that much.
Other important contexts, both interested in Japan for a few different reasons. Anime isn't a small one but I'm also a huge fan of the Yakuza games, he's into the JDM car scene, and we just enjoy travelling in general. We didn't do many things like Universal, Disneysea etc. but hopefully there's some things in here that people will enjoy hearing about! I'll go through some tips/recommendations for the casual readers first before going into the trip in depth - please let me know if there's anything else you want to know about!

Tips + Recommendations

Yamato Takkyubin Luggage Forwarding If like us you are going to be staying in quite a few different places, this service is so so so good I cannot overstate it. We had two big suitcases and one smaller one, we sent just the big ones for two of the trips and then for the final trip from Osaka to Tokyo we sent all 3 and just used our backpacks to bring essentials for the night.Pretty much all hotels will allow you to use the service, some may request you pay them with cash for the actual service but for all but one of ours we could use card. We sent Yokohama -> Kyoto, then Kyoto -> Osaka, then finally Osaka -> Tokyo. There are options for same day delivery I believe however we did both the next day and for a few days later. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments and I'll answer if I can!
Trip Planning I've been fortunate to be able to travel a lot so wasn't nervous about the actual travel, however Japan is such a far away country that I didn't want to go and get there then not know what to do and waste my time. In the past holidays with family were more about relaxing on a beach, or with my partner our city breaks are short as they are other European countries and so easier to return to if we wanted. I wanted to take a different approach to this trip so I made a big Google Sheet and Google Map with all the places I wanted to visit/see. It was never meant to be a strict itinerary as some people I showed seemed to assume 😅 But it really helped me to visually see where things I wanted to go to were, and then make a rough plan in case I did get stuck at some point.Anyway it was a really good idea in hindsight and I'm very glad we did it for this trip as our first time going! Here's a picture of the map looks like, we didn't necessarily do everything but we did most things - https://i.imgur.com/2xLyy7Y.png. I used mymaps.google.com, to be honest there's definitely betteeasier to use tools out there but I got this to work for me so I stuck with it.
Walking People aren't kidding about the amount of walking, although I think our top amount was still under 30k so don't worry too much. That said, if you don't walk a lot anyway then your feet are going to hurt. My partner was fine, I was awful. I thought my shoes would be fine and apparently they weren't so if you can pack walking boots please do. The other thing is I think the way you walk affects it too, my partner and I both had multiple pairs of shoes with us but where his converse boots were fine, the soles of my feet were awful in the same types of shoes 😭
Driving I am not a driver but my partner is. He has a full manual UK driving license and insurance, and so for Japan all he needed was to get the International Driver's Permit a little before we went. We rented a car for three different occasions, two times from the same place then the final was for a JDM rental. All was fine, the JDM place was confused for a moment as my partner has a Polish passport + UK license but we translated Poland for him and after that there were no issues! You'll need to check what you need depending on where you're from, it's easier for us due to the same driving side although when we rented for Daikoku and the Nagoya drive they did give us an automatic so just be aware of that if you want to request/drive manual. The rental places we used were Orix rent-a-car for the Daikoku and Yokohama -> Nagoya trip and we had a Mazda 2. For the JDM rental we used Omoshiro.

Trip Report

Tokyo

25/04 - Airport, Shinjuku hotel, Shinjuku We followed a similar first day that I'm sure many of these reports will begin with - arrived at the airport, we had filled out the VJW forms and had both QR codes ready to go. Immigration had about an hour wait so longer than normal but we were also near the back of our plane and there was at least another full plane in front of us. Actually going through immigration was a complete breeze. Once through and picked up our luggage, we got a Welcome Suica, then headed to Shinjuku. We reached our hotel about 4 hours early for check-in, wasn't sure what to do for that time but they were happy to take our bags until we could go to the room (something that is consistent with all the hotels we went to thankfully). Jetlag was pretty bad, I was flagging by afternoon but we pushed through it and took the few hours to just walk around and see the sights. We spent some time in Hakone-yama before heading back to the hotel and getting cleaned up/accidentally falling asleep too early.
26/04 - Akihabara, Golden Gai Of course woke too early by not being as proactive as we should've with warding off jetlag but used that to leave early for Akihabara. After getting some breakfast we saw the Yodobashi Camera and went in there for about an hour just looking at all the floors 😅 It was raining a ton but it surprised us with how warm it still was and quickly realised why people prefer umbrella with no raincoat!! Spent pretty much the whole day in Akihabara, went round a ton of shops and also went into our first of many many arcades we'd go to. We went back to the hotel to return the items we'd bought then walked to Golden Gai as our hotel was about a 15-20 minute walk ^^ Had some delicious ramen, unfortunately didn't drink as my partner was finishing antibiotics for the first few days but it was still great to be there. Slept a lot later which was good.
27/04 - Kabukicho, Shinjuku National Garden This was more a day for me to fufill my Yakuza game sightseeing. Being so close to Kabukicho I was so excited to visit a city and be able to make my way round without a map loool. It was just the end of the blue festival so the iconic arch was still blue although I did get to see it red at the end of the trip so I wasn't too bothered about that. We went around Kabukicho, the square, again spent tons of time in the arcades and discovered how much we enjoyed the MaiMaiDX machines. Ended up getting one of the passports that save your progress and give you an extra play so if you like arcades then I recommend them!! After this and some lunch, we were going to do a walk to the national garden then realised I went the wrong way so we took the train. As a side note here, the Suica and train system is so useful. Very similar to using a card for the underground except it's actually clean. Walked around the national garden, it was very sunny and warm. Didn't know it had it before going but there's a starbucks in the middle of the garden and we managed to join the queue about 10 minutes before they stopped taking new orders. Had a nice time watching the sun set in that garden before heading back to the hotel.
28/04 - Teamlabs Planets Wasn't something I was going to initially go to however I checked out tickets the day previously and saw some for this day and decided we could do it as we had a ton of free time. I had chosen 2:30pm for an entrance time however it was such a nice day so we left early and spent time just walking around the docks. It was so so sunny, the area didn't have loads going on however it was still very pretty. We spent time in the parks and walking alongside the water. Teamlabs was pretty cool, I did enjoy the water based sections although dodging both influencer and family photos might detract from your experience. This was also where I realised I'd already become the stereotype tourist and was sunburnt :') I guess I had to learn my lesson physically and I did thankfully stop any further burning after this with diligent sun cream appliance afterwards pretty much every day. After this we went back to Shinjuku and after food we packed up ready to go to Yokohama.

Yokohama

29/04 - Bashamichi, Daikoku, Cosmo Clock ✨Showa Day Left our hotel at 11 and hadn't yet discovered the wonders of luggage forwarding so we brought all our bags with us on the train to Yokohama! Not too bad though, we got to our hotel a little early but they took our bags as we went and had lunch before the room was ready. Went around Bashamichi (another game location lol) before taking the train to central Yokohama. We had pre-booked the rental cars all before we left to ensure availability but there weren't any problems. This was also my partner's birthday which is something the rental staff realised whilst we were sorting out all the documents 😆. For Daikoku, we didn't need to pass through any ETC gates from Yokohama but it was the first time on the Japanese roads. It was a little nerve-wracking at first as there's very slightly different rules to UK roads but in general driving is fine. We reached Daikoku PA around 20 past 6pm, and it was about 2 hours until police moved everyone along. My partner was in dreamland with the cars that we saw, if you're into the JDM scene at all or just a petrolhead then you'll love it but it is a bit of luck with what you'll see. After we left Daikoku, we went back to our hotel. We'd checked in with them previously that we could keep the car with them as the hotel we had chosen had parking available for an additional cost. We left the car at the hotel then went out for drinks and to see the cosmo clock. Didn't ride it but it was very cool seeing it all lit up over Yokohama. We bar hopped a bit, then went back.
30/04 - Recovery... Not much to say about this day, my partner was fairly hungover so we returned the car to the rental place and then spent the day just chilling at our ryokan hotel and around Yokohama. No drinks this time round as we had a very long trip the next day!!

Nagoya (Road Trip from Yokohama)

01/05 - Expressways, Onshi-Hakone Park, Expressways, Shinshiro, Expressways, Nagoya I'll condense this one a bit otherwise I'll type forever but this was a really fun time. The driving totaled almost 6 hours by the end so it's not for the faint hearted haha. The point was that we'd stop a few times along the way though which is what we did end up doing. We sent our luggage with the forwarding service (to the hotel after Nagoya as we were just staying the one night), then had an early start as we went to the car rental for 8. We chose the same place we rented from for Daikoku and had the same sales rep sorting out any documents so it was a bit quicker although this time we did get a quick explaination on the toll gates. Anyone going on the expressways will need to know how to use them, we were a bit confused the first time but once you've done it a couple times it'll be smooth sailing (and it's such a good system for people with the automatic cards too). We left Yokohama and set our location for Nagoya. We went for about 2 hours before stopping in Odawara for a quick snack and pee break. Pretty overcast day but despite this we still decided to do a stop in a park on the way and went to Onshi-Hakone Park. It was very cool/bit scary going up the winding mountain passes but wow the views are incredible. We spent again probably a couple hours at the park, had some lunch, no view of Fuji but we could see a lot of the other mountains around which are breathtaking in their own rights (: It's right on Lake Ashi so we did get to see the pirate cruise going round. After this break we did another couple hours or so driving before stopping slightly outside of Shinshiro. Something I will say about the expressways is that it is insane how fast people go 😂 We're not about to try anything so it was sticking to the 120 on the signs for us but people just whizz by. Anyway, we stopped at a familymart in this village for a quick break and I know I've said it already but the views are so beautiful. It's green in the UK but it's something else, I kept wondering if it's just viewing through rose tinted glasses/greener on the other side but I don't think that's true at least about those countryside views. It was also one of the reasons we wanted to do the road trip instead of train at least this time round, we could stop in these places and take it in. After our stop there, it was back onto the expressway until we reached Nagoya. It was roughly 6pm when we reached Nagoya, we had intially booked the car for the whole day with return the next morning but they allow early return with Orix so we did that instead before finding our hotel and having some dinner. Not too much time in Nagoya but it was the first time seeing the bullet train which was cool. Nagoya itself has some nice sights, we were thinking about going to Liberty Walk the next day but instead we just decided we'd head to Kyoto once we left the hotel.

Kyoto

02/05 - Shinkansen, Kyoto, Nishiki Market It was a really lovely day and we were taking the shinkansen for the first time. The shinkansen from Nagoya is only 34 minutes but we did end up buying reserved seats as the station was pretty packed. This is probably the main thing we noticed with Golden week, everything else was busy but not insanely so. Nagoya station was a lot busier but otherwise fine. We didn't have JR passes as when I used the online calculator it didn't come out to be worth it for our particular travel so it was full fare for us. The shinkansen itself was good, we would be using it again for Osaka back to Tokyo but due to Nagoya being closer to Kyoto I didn't reeeally think I'd need to book early. It's probably a good idea still lol but it worked out fine for us to book same day despite how busy Nagoya was. Once in Kyoto we took our time walking down to our next hotel. This was another ryokan style so that was nice, we also passed a garden which we noted to go to the next day (Shosei-en Garden). Our luggage had arrived and was waiting for us at the hotel already so we got refreshed then went out for the evening. We went up to Nishiki market then walked back towards our hotel again. Had a sushi train small dinner as we hadn't had any sushi yet and I've also only had a train once before. It might not be the best Kyoto had to offer but wow was it still better than anything I'd had in the UK!! We then spent hours once again in an arcade, if you like games the MaiMaiDX machines really are addictive :')
03/05 - Shosei-en Garden, Higashi Hongan-ji, Tō-ji Temple, Nijō Castle✨Constitution Memorial Day We woke up early, had breakfast at the ryokan, then went straight for the garden. It was a beautiful day once again so plenty of suncream applied. The Shosei-en Garden isn't the biggest but it's so beautiful, they have this pond that looks so still but my partner spotted a turtle and then you start to see more and more. They have some historical buildings around the place, we spent about an hour there before going to the next place. We walked down the road to the next place, this was Higashi Honhan-ji temple. Both locations weren't really that busy to be honest. Seeing this temple was nice but personally I did prefer the gardens. We next went Tō-ji temple. This is one of those locations that are on the 'must-do in Kyoto' but I did like it a lot. The 5 story pagoda was a cool sight. It wasn't so busy although we were going around lunch time so hungry crowds were likely taking a small break (: We spent an unreasonable amount of time just looking at the koi fish in the moat not even in the temple area 🎏 Finally we went to Nijō Castle. This was quite busy although we were one of the latter groups going around as it was nearing the end of the day. Another of the listed must do's but again I would say it's a cool place to see. If you do go, the tour around the main house is interesting and if you decide to climb the walls there's some nice sights of the area around. We finished up this day heading back to the market area and had dinner including a matcha beer. I'm not really a massive matcha person but I was up for trying all the different things, the beer sort of just tasted of normal beer but it looked exactly like a matcha-green coloured guinness.
04/05 - Arishiyama ✨Greenery Day This wasn't really a packed day as we were heading to an airbnb for a couple of nights. We used the luggage forwarding from the ryokan where they were concerned that we wouldn't get our luggage as soon as we wanted due to Golden week. I then let them know we were looking to get it sent for the 6th and they completely relaxed and said that would be perfectly fine 👌 For context if you've not been to Kyoto, the train system is alright but pales compared to Tokyo. Getting to our airbnb wouldn't be too long, about an hour, but as we didn't really have anything planned and only had our small suitcase with us we decided to walk to the next airbnb instead and waste time along the way. This way when we arrived it wouldn't be before check in time and it would keep us out and about. The walk was about 3 hours total although we lengthed it by stopping a few times. There were some celebrations happening due to Greenery day and Children's day being the next day. We stopped to listen to some music, stopped to have a starbucks, then finally we reached out airbnb in Arishiyama. The place was really nice, and it was fun to have a whole place for a few nights instead of a hotel. If you're wanting to, looking at airbnb's is a completely valid option when staying in Japan - you just might get warned before you arrive not to talk or laugh too loudly or the neighbours might complain/call the police 😅
05/05 - Fushimi Inari Shrine ✨Children's Day Initially were going to do both the bamboo/monkey forest and Fushimi Inari but ended up leaving a little later than planned so just committed to only Fushimi Inari. I was expecting fairly large crowds considering the day and the station was..... not great. That said, the station was very small and so although it was crowded we were also out of there fairly quick. This review of Fushimi Inari is going to follow almost everyone's - it was busy at the bottom and as you go up you'll get a lot less people. Even it being Children's day didn't stop us getting moments of just myself and my partner being alone so don't be deterred if the bottom is busy! Beautiful views, we did the full routes going to the top. It was a bit tricky at times but it's not a race, and you'll feel good doing the full thing. We reached the top, were able to partake in the prayers there, then had a great time going back down. There was a little area near the end with a bunch of cats; we turned a corner and saw one and a bunch of people crowding round to take a photo. Maybe only a few steps later you realise there's about 4 more just chilling around the place. It was a cool experience and definitely worth doing at least once if you're there.

Osaka

06/05 - Local train, Dotenbori, Den-Den Town We took a train from our airbnb to Osaka and went via the local train rather than the shinkansen. It was fine, we reached Dotenbori and our hotel was not far from the station. We got there a bit early again but our room was already available and our luggage had arrived too (: After getting refreshed we went out for the afternoon to Den-Den Town. This is Osaka's version of Akihabara, and we spent a lot of time with my partner looking in all the card shops. It was pretty rainy but not really a problem between the Lawson's umbrella and ducking into lots of shops ;) We spent time in an arcade for a while before heading out to Dotenbori market area and the bridges for the evening/night. Yet again another location in the Yakuza games so I had fun pointing out different places like the Mega Don Quijote or the crab restaurant. We had some food and ended up in a drinking place that used a QR code and website for ordering to the table which was dangerously easy to use haha. Had some really tasty sushi there too, I'll try and find the name if anyone is wondering! Took tons of photos there, the rain at night gave the city that classic look reflecting the neon lights everywhere.
07/05 - Kobe day trip We went to Kobe for the day, lots of rain but the main market area is all under cover so that was handy. My partner was looking for a new phone which he found, we also went to one of those places where they grill the food in front of you for dinner. It was great going in a scruffy elevator up to the restaurant and stepping out onto a really beautifully designed restaurant, and it wasn't very busy so we were able to go without reserving beforehand. Kobe itself is cool although we didn't explore too much outside the market areas due to just how hard it was raining, I think it was the heaviest on this day unfortunately.
08/05 - Nara day trip, Todai-ji We went to Nara and although the advice is to go early, we went for more mid-day time. It wasn't crowded at all so that was fortunate. We ended up walking past that famous mochi stall that you see on all the tiktoks of Nara. I wasn't expecting to see the making of the mochi and wasn't going to wait for it either however they started about 2 minutes after we found the stall so we did stay and watch and it was cool to see in person (: We tried the mochi, it's pretty good although for me it was a bit too dry from the powder. Was still tasty!!! Walked through towards the deer park and saw the pagodas around. When we reached the deer park of course we had to get some crackers and feed them. Oh my god they're so pushy!! It was actually so funny to interact with them, one tried to nibble me and we got headbutted a bit when we had the crackers but once you've given them all out then they'll leave you 😆. We sat on a bench for a bit and watched some other poor souls go through the same thing. Saw quite a lot of young fawns too which is cute. We kept walking up to Todai-ji, stopped for an ice cream, then went to the temple to see the huge Buddha statue. It was a good experience to see this temple, but at least for me it wasn't my favourite part of the trip. I know for many others though it's really great to see so don't knock it off your list if you're interested in it! I'm glad I went once but probably won't return. Spent some more time just chilling around Nara and looking at the temples and shrines around the place. We went back to Osaka for around 4pm. Spent the evening in Osaka again, no rain this time! Oh this was about the time I was developing a sore throat, a little bit nerve wracking but fully vaccinated + boosters and have had covid previously so was fairly certain it wasn't that. Even so, my partner was coughing a bit which is the start of the cold we both had for the rest of the trip 😔
09/05 - Osaka Aquarium, Dotenbori I didn't put the aquarium on my plan initially but we had another spare day in Osaka and I do like visiting aquariums + my partner likes penguins a lot and they had a lot there. It was a cool experience, a lot of families as to be expected but it wasn't packed so lots of opportunities to see the animals and fish :) The two whales were very cool, they're so massive. We also got to see their rockhopper penguin conservation area, you could see them sitting on their eggs. I recommend the aquarium to any families planning to be in Osaka, it's pretty easy to get to and the station gives clear directions on where to go to get to the aquarium and the nearby lego park. After the aquarium we went back to Dotenbori and looked around the various book-offs as my partner was looking for screen protectors. If you're interested in any Japanese media I can recommend them too, I found some games in there that were a lot cheaper than you find in the West in much better condition. Our coughs worsened by evening which wasn't great, we weren't doing much more in super crowded areas but it's obviously not good anyway. We were wearing masks everywhere beforehand but it made it more important. We did end up getting some Bron, if you're in Japan and have a cough then I do recommend it but just be aware that it contains codeine. We got some from a place that specifically had a pharmacy section, you bring the box to the cashier and they'll give you the actual bottle from behind the counter. Really really great stuff, much better than anything you can get without a prescription in the UK which was annoying as my cough was subsequently worse for about 5 days once I got back!! It's pretty much gone now though (lasted longer likely due to asthma but it was gone for my partner after a couple days of being back). Overall I really enjoyed Osaka, all the cities we went to were cool but for me Osaka was my favourite :)

Tokyo

10/05 - Shinkansen, Airbnb We left Osaka for Tokyo and took the Shinkansen back. We did splash out a bit and took the green car with seats on the Fuji side. I fell asleep for most of the trip but woke in time to see Fuji for the roughly 6-7 minutes it was viewable for. It was my only time to see Fuji due to the weather being almost clear that day aside from a single cloud going right across the mountain. It didn't block the peak though so I don't feel too robbed 😆. If/when we visit Japan again I would like to see it again closer but it was still a great sight. Once we reached Shinagawa station, we switched to the local train to head to our airbnb in Shinjuku once again (although closer to Shibuya this time whereas we were more North before). We were staying in a pretty close knit residential area but did a bit of a hello to the neighbours which was nice. We had done the luggage forwarding again but had set it to come the next day so we would be the people available for receiving it. Spent the time around the airbnb and also tried having an uber eats delivered (which worked great lol).
11/05 - Shibuya, Shinjuku We spent most of this day around Shibuya as we wanted a few souvenirs for family and also hadn't visited Shibuya properly. Went to the crossing, then spent time mainly shopping and going around one of the Donkis. Pretty rainy again but not a problem for a shopping day.
12/05 - RX-7 Day Trip (Lake Hinuma, Ibaraki Flower Park), Kabukicho We used Omoshiro Rent-a-car for the RX-7 (for those interested, here's the car - https://i.imgur.com/HRX4DYy.png ) and they were great. We had it pre-booked again before we arrived in Japan as it's a pretty sought after car to rent. Bit banged up but nothing major, and we had it booked for I think 8 hours? We did return it a little early as we didn't really have anything else to do and didn't want to be late with a return as the shop closed at the time we'd be returning it. A funny part of the terms you agree to is no Initial D style driving. For the trip itself, we didn't have anything major planned so I made a makeshift plan to just go a bit out of Tokyo and visit somewhere different. I found this lake on maps that'd be not too far, didn't realise until we were there that it's less a lake for sights and more for fishing 😅. No worries though, as the main reason was to get some driving in and enjoy having the car (which was achieved!). Got some snacks from a 7/11 then went off. We had a lot of time left so we drove to Ibaraki flower park, yet another quick find from scrolling around Google Maps. It was a very beautiful park, they have a rose market there as well as selling some fresh produce. It's a small charge to go in the park but it's worth it for the hour or more you might spend there and will go towards the park maintenance. Also being the middle of Spring of course it's going to be beautiful with all the new blooms (: We spent time there admiring the countryside and being sad about going back home the next day. We went back to the rental place afterwards, also during this drive was the time where we were finding it so funny how we were sticking to the speed limits in this beautiful car and being overtaken by massive trucks going so much faster. We did have a moment that was like from a movie though, we entered the expressway after the tolls and as we were pulling in an older Honda NSX was being driven next to us. The guy driving looked over and gave us a nod with a straight face before pulling ahead a little so we could be behind him. We ruined that movie mood by both being so excited by how cool the moment was but hey it's one of those things that won't be forgotten at least!! He zoomed off a few minutes later but we weren't risking anything to keep pace ahaha. We returned the car then went back to Shinjuku for our final evening in Japan. We went back to Kabukicho and I was able to see the arch in red :') Took photos of the karaoke place that's in the games, would've gone in but my throat was killing!! So we just stuck to being outside. We went back to the area around our airbnb, had our last dinner there then went and packed up ready to go home.
13/05 - Home :') Our flight was leaving a little before 9am so we were leaving the airbnb for 5ish. Early start but as we'd gotten packed up it wasn't too bad of a walk to the station. Grabbed our train, it was fairly early on one of the lines that goes direct to the station so we were able to get on with ease. The train was rammed by the time we reached the station. No problems getting through the airport, got to our gate and then flew home.

Final Notes

I had such a good time in Japan, I loved being there and hope to return within the next few years if life permits!! We definitely missed some of those 'must-do's' such as Osaka Castle, any of the theme parks, Arishiyama Monkey Park, actually doing Karaoke, and some of the food options due to my own anxieties walking into places lol. That said, I don't regret the things we did end up doing and it just means I'll have to fit some of those into my next trip 😉. Although my partner would like to visit more Northern areas like Hokkaido or Sendai so we'll see!
We didn't have probably as much packed into each day as could've been but for me this was perfect and a great time for my first time. If you managed to read all this then thank you very much, and please let me know if you have any questions about the trip!! I'll be happy to answer. Thanks for reading!

~ 1. Introduction ~
Here is a detailed description of my wishlist for a Mario Kart 9 or 10/X (if Tour is considered the 9th installment) I don't expect everyone to like all my ideas. This is just a wishlist. I obviously would be happy with any Mario Kart Nintendo decides to put out but in a perfect world, this is what I would want for it to be the best Mario Kart imo. I hope you enjoy.

*³ - Even if not many people liked Automatic drifting, it was there for a reason for you to choose. Some liked it. Some didn't. It should be the player's choice.
*⁴ - Camera can also be changed freely during the race from the pause menu.

*² - Wanted to split the vehicle selections between Solo Dash and Double Dash drivers. Solo Dash drivers will now only select between Karts and Bikes and Double Dash drivers will only select between ATVs and new Buggy vehicles. *Buggys are essential similar to the designs of the Karts used in Mario Kart Double Dash. ATVs are now bigger in size to help fit the idea of 2 drivers on one vehicle.
*³ - The original Super Mario Kart had 5 courses per Cup so I brought that option back for custom races.
*⁴ - Wanted to make the option available for players. These courses will be excluded from Laps option and be set to default when selected: ⁿ⁶⁴ Wario Stadium, ⁿ⁶⁴ Rainbow Road, ᵍᶜⁿ Baby Park, ᵍᶜⁿ Wario Colosseum, ³ᵈˢ Wuhu Loop, ³ᵈˢ Maka Wuhu, ³ᵈˢ Rainbow Road, ʷⁱⁱ ᵘ Mount Wario, and ʷⁱⁱ ᵘ Big Blue.

2023.05.28 14:33 derhundi Trackmania performance problems since ~2 months

Hey guys,
Im already playing tm for about 2 years and never had such problems before. No other game in my libary has this kind of problem. I just want to play again and I think my setup isn't the problem: i9 9900K 4.6Ghz 64 Gb DRR4 3200Mhz RTX 3070 ti Windows 11 64 bit Game is installed on m.2

The problem is that I can't play lag/stutter free this game anymore. It doesn't matter if I play the campaign or online. It feels like something in the background is forcing tm to not utilize 100% or sth. I installed the game through steam (controller support and before the steam release opened it with steam too). Vsync and other options with sync deactivated. Tried with Vsync only too but no changes. Tried to play the game in fullscreen and in windowed fullscreen, also no changes. Tried to set everything on low and also on high/Ultra but the stutters are still there... I reinstalled my Gpu drivers, fresh installed tm (deleted the whole folder) and no settings changed. OpenPlanet not installed and it still lags. I get around 100 to 140 fps depends on map but my game stutters so bad its not payable... No other game has this problems... I already tried to find the problem in my hardware, but also no crashes in prime95 and furmark (30 min). I deactivated so much programs/services in my startup...
Does someone know how I can fix this or has someone else this problem too?

2023.05.28 12:15 MisterEmbedded My Guide To Get Into Computer Programming

Intro

Hi, I'm AdityaRaj, I'm a 17 Year Old Who Loves Programming, And Here's My Guide To Get Into Computer Programming.
Programming Is Surprisingly Quite Easy Once You Understand Few Basic Stuff, Like Memory, CPU, What Is Actually Happening In The CPU, Etc Etc, "Crash Course: Computer Science" is a awesome series which taught me ALOT about computers, and believe me it will make your life easier.
i'm learning like you all too! and i would be more than glad if you point out any mistake as it will help everyone who's reading this.

What is Lower & High Level In Computers?

Well Lower & High Level Basically Signifies How Close Something Is To "Bare-Metal" Or How Close Something Is To What The Computers Understand Directly.
The More Lower Level The More That Thing Is Close To What Computers Understand. See Computers Are Literally Just Rocks Made To Do Some Stuff Repeatedly, They Are Like Your Kitty Who Doesn't Even Understands Basic Maths.
Computers Do 3 Things In Their Entire Life, They Fetch The Instruction They Have To Execute, They Decode The Instruction They Fetched & Then They Execute That Instruction, That's Literally All Your Computer Ever Does, But This Becomes Very Powerful Because Modern Computers Can Do Such Stuff Like 2400000000 Times Every Second, And Gaming Computers Can Do Such Stuff At Like 400,00,00,000 Times Every Second, That's Like 400 Crore Times Every Second.

What Operating System To Choose?

Programming doesn't really depend on Operating System, if you're on windows then it's fine, if you're on mac it's fine, if you're on linux that's perfect.
In my opinion Linux provides you the best environment to develop any kind of software, and it is the recommended OS for writing software.
that doesn't mean you should quit using your existing Operating System, but learning linux will help you alot, there are jobs that specifically hire people who are masters in Linux, not to mention the fact that basically anything can run linux with a HUGE Performance gain.
in starting i will say just use whatever you have but try to learn linux side by side too!

What Programming Language To Choose?

It's Very Important What Programming Language You Choose, It Will Kind Of Decide That What Field In Programming You Will Be Doing.
  • Python
For example i started with a Programming Language Called "Python", it's simple, very easy to read & understand, and overall easy for an beginner, but Python didn't get me far, with Python I mainly had Data Science Or Artificial Intelligence To Learn, Cause There's Not Really Any Other Thing To Do With Python Other Than Also Writing Small Scripts That Do A Particular Task.
  • JavaScript
I Later Switched To A Language Called "JavaScript", JavaScript Is Most Common In Web Development, The Websites You Visit, Most Of Them Have Their Logic Written In JavaScript.
JavaScript is comparatively harder than Python, but it's use cases have been just increasing and increasing, JavaScript code can run in your browser, basically 90% of the Reddit is basically just JavaScript code.
JavaScript can run directly in your computer using a runtime called NodeJS or Deno, the Discord Web App, Mobile & Desktop App Is Also Written In Mostly JavaScript.
Using JavaScript You Can Go Into Web Development, Mobile App Development, Desktop App Development.
JavaScript is often used with HTML & CSS, basically HTML defines what content of your website should be where and CSS defines what content of your website should look like.
i didn't create a separate section for these as you'll learn these 2 automatically when you try to get into web development.
  • C/C++/Assembly
Now I Actually Went Quite Alot Lower Level...
i learned C, C is a programming language that's 51 years old! basically it was a "revolutionary" language, almost everything you see in the modern world has it's roots to C.
you can basically do anything with C, and this is the language i love alot... people say it's not for beginners but it's not the case really, if you understand how computers work, like even an overview then you won't have much problems in C.
with C you have endless possibilities and not to mention it's one of the fastest programming languages out there. if you want to write efficient, fast software use C.
C++ is also a language which was developed to extend C's capabilities by adding more feature, and C & C++ are often used in the same projects...
Linux Kernel is written in C, your favorite web browser is written in C & C++, Android Phone's App Use Java Which Has It's Roots To C.
In Many Cases C is Also Used With Assembly, assembly is basically a Human readable version of the ACTUAL code that runs on your computers, so it's like the lowest level programming language and FASTEST too.
C++ is used alot in Game Development, games made in Unreal Engine use C++, GTA Vice City was written in C++ too!
  • Rust
Rust is a relatively high-level programming language, meant to be FAST & Secure. it has tons of rules & regulations which allows safe code to be written without memory related bugs.
Rust is really promising but it isn't something i really prefer, the main reason is syntax, while Rust offers memory safety it's really hard to look at complex code, and it's all personal preference, and you can learn rust but getting a Rust based job is quite hard and rust as of now is best for personal projects and stuff.
you can learn Rust if you want to, i can't really say in future it will be used alot or not, but it's a nice language to have under your pocket and quite alot hard to learn.
  • Swift
swift is a high-level programming language developed by Apple and used for developing software for Apple Products, it's a nice language, and the demand is high too! i can't comment much on the language as i don't have much experience with it, but if you own a Mac, i think Swift is the best thing to get into.
  • Java
Java is a high-level programming language which runs on more than 1 billion devices, all android phones have it, minecraft uses it. Java is used to develop android apps and it's not that hard as people say it is.
  • C#
C# is a high-level programming language, this language is often called "Microsoft Java" because this language does everything Java can do maybe a few things more, but all with Microsoft's branding.
no matter how much people may hate or bully this language, this language is very popular among Windows Developers as Microsoft recommends this language to develop Windows Applications.
C# is also used in Game Development, Mainly In Game Engines Like Unity & Godot.
  • Verilog, SystemVerilog or VHDL
these "programming languages" are used to program FPGAs.
FPGA's are one of the amazing stuff in technology. FPGAs are quite complex piece of hardware which you can use to design custom logic circuits.
basically our CPUs are made up of many MANY logic ciruits, these logic circuits determine the behavior of a particular CPU, you can basically create such logic circuits without having to touch a wire, you can program a FPGA to behave that way.
and as complex it sounds, sometimes it's quite more complex than that and requires alot of knowledge about how computers work and what you want the circuit to do.

What Career For What Language?

  1. The salaries mentioned are per-annum (yearly) and not monthly
  2. The salaries are what i found online, they may vary.
  3. The salaries mentioned is what offered in USA, and sadly they are quite low in India. (thanks to u/Accomplished-Toe-479 for mentioning this)
  • Embedded Systems
with C & Assembly Under your belt, and an awesome understanding of computers, you can get into a embedded systems job.
this field specializes in writing and optimizing software for computers that aren't your normal PC, Mobile Or Something, these are often very low-powerful computers that are used in stuff like your:
  • Digital Camera all those DSLRS and Stuff
  • Your Calculators & Your Digital watches
  • Your television & your setup-boxes like that tata-sky thing
  • or the computers in cars which detect how far the vehicle behind is, or the ECU in the car which decides how much fuel & air goes depending on the temprature load and etc
  • or the computers in an Train, like the engine which the train driver drives, or airplanes, all sorts of like passenger or fighter planes
at places like America you can earn like $1,10,269 (₹91,04,337) on AVERAGE, and the job demand is just increasing and increasing.
  • Web Developer
this field is most common one and the demand is high and the salary is nice too, on average you can earn $82,400 (₹68,03,339).
if you're doing web app, desktop app & mobile app development in JavaScript the figures will be quite same.
  • App Developer
your earning alot of times may depend on the platform too, an Android App Developer can earn $126,677 (₹1,04,59,061), but this isn't average you'll need alot of skills to earn this much or else it can go down by quite alot.
if you're an Apple App Developer using Swift language you can earn like on an average $135,804 (₹1,12,12,630) if you have skills.
i don't know much about desktop app developer salaries but you can earn like $84,500 (₹69,76,725) on an average.
  • Game Developer
game development is a relatively big topic and while there is no answer to how much you can earn as a game developer on an average a video game artist can earn $59,156 (₹48,84,203) and a video game programmer on an average can earn $75,486 (₹62,32,486).
and while the above mentioned figures are for when working for someone, if you decide to make your own team or work solo, the figure can go even higher if you make a game that has a huge return of investment.
in the start i think it's fine to work for someone to get the much needed experience and then you can work on your own game. but solely working on your game can be risky as if the game doesn't perform well you may earn even lower than what you earned by working for someone.
this isn't a guide about getting into game development but if you want to become a video game artist i'd say start with 3D Modelling Skills & Pixel Art, both of them aren't required. a programming language like C++, Java Or C# is required to if you want to program the game too or you can just hire someone or just work with someone you know.
  • Artificial Intelligence
don't know much about this field too but on an average you can earn like $105,000 (₹86,69,304).
  • FPGA Engineer
this job on an average pays $149,735 (₹1,23,62,840) but it can go upto as much as $192,000 (₹1,58,52,441).
these jobs have HIGH demand but because of the skill-set they require.

What Programming Language/Career you should go into?

i think you the person asking this question has the answer. every language/career has different difficult, adventure, salary and stress, and you should only go into the one in which YOU are interested in.
i want to go into embedded systems because those small computers & programming them is what attracts me, the salary is quite decent too, the stress it gives is almost none since it is what i am interested in.
any idiot can get into programming for the juicy money, but to actually earn what the professionals in this field earn you'll have to be passionate about your field & job.
and not only that but you'll have to get a degree too, because yes you can learn most of the stuff online but colleges, the good ones especially teach alot of stuff that you may not find online and not the mention that actually getting the job will be alot easier since the company knows you studied in the good college thus you have the skill they need.

Resources

here are some resources you might like to get into programming:
Note: the resources above are mostly in english and the resources in other languages have been mentioned with the language they are in.

Outro

that's really all i have to say, feel free to ask me anything you want to, don't feel that you'll sound dumb or something, i was an complete ass in the starting too (i still am xD).
also thanks to everyone appreciating me! lol it's alot to take in. thanks to all because of ya'll this post is now in the "Useful posts for teenagers" category.

2023.05.28 11:57 Commercial-Prompt-74 Family members DB pensions - queries

Hi all.
I was looking over a family members pensions and just wanted to query a couple of areas.
He is 66 and still working and does plan to continue working 1-2 days per week in early retirement. He has full state pension from next year.
He is single, no spouse, no children etc.
He has 3 very small DC pensions totalling under 10k which he will take as lumps sums.
He then has 2 DB pensions.
1 - NRD is July 2023 and can pay £5310pa Or £3886pa + £26k lump sum
2 - LGPS is state pension age so July 2024 and can pay £3425pa.
My queries:
The LGPS pension statement doesn't mention his lump sum entitlement. I did find a calculator online where I input the £3425 figure and it says he can get a lump sum of £14678 with recited pension of £2201pa. Would that be right? Just found it strange that it wasn't on the statement.
With no kids or spouse and state pension starting next year which will utilise near all personal allowance, in my opinion, he would be sensible to go for the tax free lump sums and put them into fixed rate cash Isa use to fund his holidays. The extra taxable inomce pa isn't significant and he lives a modest lifestyle. Am I missing anything?
It would give him c. 50k lump sums in total (inc DC encahsments) and 17k pa inflation linked for life.
Any comments much appreciated.
