2023.06.05 05:01 ProcedureHungry3909 AITA for throwing away an ex employees beloved possession

Ok i have a situation:
I terminated an employee last week. They grab most of their stuff but left behind bigger items such as a fish tank, toys, and books.
I told this employee that they need to pick up their stuff this weekend when im there. When i contacted them, they were out of town and will not be back until Monday. So they asked if they could come later. Im not available during the time they suggested. We have been going back and forth for a week and they wont come and collect their belongings at any of the times I suggested.
I then asked them for a list of books that they left so i can pull them for her and leave it in a designated place but she states that she doesnt know the titles. I ask what the books were about and again she doesnt know but she wants them back.
More or less she wants to come after hours and go through our books and find hers (but again she doesn't remember the titles or the book subject). This would be a total waste of time since she would be going through over 200 books. I feel like more or less she is just trying to waste my time.
Well today I gave this ex employee one last option and again they said they were busy and that they wont come and get it unless it was on their time frame. SOOO I went through the books and pitched any one of them that didnt have our company logo on them and threw them in the trash along with the fish tank and toys.
I never told anyone that i did this this morning but I then got a text from my ex employee calling me horrible names a few hours later and flipping out that i threw away her stuff. Which just shows me that she was home but just trying to be difficult. Apparently some of those books she wanted back were childhood gifts from her favorite aunt.
AITA?

2023.06.05 05:00 Smolesworthy The Traveller

The only traveller with real soul I’ve ever met was an office boy who worked in a company where I was at one time employed. This young lad collected brochures on different cities, countries and travel companies; he had maps, some torn out of newspapers, others begged from one place or another; he cut out pictures of landscapes, engravings of exotic costumes, paintings of boats and ships from various journals and magazines. He would visit travel agencies on behalf of some real or hypothetical company, possibly the actual one in which he worked, and ask for brochures on Italy or India, brochures giving details of sailings between Portugal and Australia. He knew exactly which trains one had to catch to go from Paris to Bucharest; which trains one took to cross England; and in his garbled pronunciation of the strange names hung the bright certainty of the greatness of his soul. Now he probably lives like a dead man, but perhaps one day, when he’s old, he’ll remember that to dream of Bordeaux is not only better, but truer, than actually to arrive in Bordeaux.
From The Book of Disquiet, by Fernando Pessoa.
And this post on distant lands.

2023.06.05 04:58 moonbird477 Mysterious Goth Furry Girl Button?

Mysterious Goth Furry Girl Button?
I recently visited an anime convention in my city earlier last month, among the dealers and vendors selling overpriced trading cards and toys I saw this booth that had a lot of stickers. Mostly anime logos and character stickers, run by a man clearly of East Asian or South East Asian ancestry who isn't a man of many words but he is a friendly guy to work with. In between the mix of stickers, he advertises that he sells a few buttons, I noticed Lum from the anime Urusei Yatsura which I decided to pick since there was limited merch of her at the convention despite the show's recent reboot. Since he has a deal for 2 for 5 Dollars I think that my second one, and I spy what appears to be vintage Furry (Anthromorphic) Girls and being the furry trash that I am made think which one to get. There were a few white dog or wolf girls in some sort of science fiction pilot suit. So I assumed Star Fox and the one I grabbed was a Goth Cat girl in a black leather dress and boots while sitting on a die with skulls on the pips. After buying it, I wondered who the original artist however any attempt at Google Lens has been fruitless. So if there is anybody out there that can be more sneaky about locating one particular image I'd gladly appreciate the help. What is interesting, there appears to be a signature on the picture that matches the Lum button with some Chinese or Japanese characters. I will also attach a photo of that for proof for anyone to help locate any leads into the finding of the artist.

The Goth Furry Girl Button in Question
The Lum Button with art by the same artist?

2023.06.05 04:46 throwawayacc241267 Is this too much info dumping for the opening scene?

Maya's heart was racing as she ran through the dark streets, her eyes darting around for any sign of danger. The entire military and every law enforcement officer in the country would be looking for her right about now and she knew without a single doubt they'd find her. But for now, none of that mattered. She had to find Anika Medhas before it was too late.
Of course it was raining. Maya was used to bad luck. The military had all the high-tech gear, including specialized weaponry, night vision equipment, and helicopters. All she had was a lack of coordination that had nearly gotten her killed before all of this. Now, she was caught in the middle of this mess, with nothing but her wits to keep her alive.
It was a funny thing, luck. Maya's bad luck is what got her in this situation to begin with. Her parents deciding that they didn't want her and putting her into the foster system? Bad luck. Walking into that school building at seven-thirty in the morning? Bad luck. Her subsequent departure from that school building in federal custody? Bad luck. In fact, every bad thing that happened to her seemed like it happened not because of her own faults, but because of her terrible luck.
She didn't ask to be an orphan. She didn't ask to be arrested for a crime she didn't commit. She didn't ask to be sentenced to death. And she certainly didn't ask to be a pawn in a war she barely understood. But, here she was, fleeing the highest security prison in the country to deliver a message to the rebellion. Hopefully, the madness would end, but Maya knew it was too much to ask for it to be in her lifetime.
As the helicopter blades grew louder, she crouched behind a pile of garbage bags, her stomach churning at the stench of rot that surrounded her. The city was a wasteland, a place where poverty and decay had left their mark on every building and every street. She had to move quickly, but the garbage bags were her only cover.
She held her nose and tried to breathe through her mouth, but the smell was overpowering. It was a sickly-sweet odor, like something that had been left to fester in the sun for days. She could feel the maggots crawling over her skin, and she had to fight the urge to scream. Any noise would certainly mean her death, so she kept her mouth shut and let the tears stream silently down her face.
Just as she thought she couldn't bear the stench of the garbage any longer, Maya heard a sudden silence fall over the world around her. She dared to peek out from behind the sludge and saw that the aircraft was gone. For a moment, she felt a sense of relief. But as she listened to the distant wail of sirens, she knew that danger still lurked around every corner. She took a deep breath and prepared to move on, her heart pounding in her chest.
Maya moved through the debris with surprising ease. The rubble and broken concrete around her made it difficult for anyone to follow her movements. She hoped that she’d soon be able to spot the residential districts in the distance, where she'd be able to blend in and disappear. She repeated the address over and over in her mind, committing it to memory. 151 Second Street, Residential District 3. The streets were empty, and the only sounds were the crunching of her boots on the concrete and faint sirens in the distance. She felt a sense of urgency, knowing that every second counted and any moment she could be detained.
Maya's thoughts drifted to the inner zones, the place she had always dreamed of living. The idea of having plenty of food and a cozy home was almost too good to be true. She remembered running away from her group home years ago just to catch a glimpse of them. Those RD’s were reserved for the wealthy and connected, and Maya had neither of those things. She had no money and no one to turn to except her prison buddies, who were more like people she had to sleep next to hope and that they didn’t kill her than friends. The thought of living in the inner zones was like a fantasy, something that could never be possible for someone like her.
Maya couldn't help but wonder how Anika managed to live in RD 3 and have ties to the rebellion while her mother was locked up in the Penitentiary District, facing certain death. But she pushed those thoughts aside. It wasn't her place to question the specifics of Anika's life. All she needed to do was find the girl, pass on the message, and then she could die in peace. That was the deal she had made, and she intended to keep her end of the bargain. She had to keep her thoughts clear, any distraction could get her killed. She was determined to see this through, no matter what.
Maya never thought she'd reach a point where all she wanted was a peaceful death, but that day had finally come. Instead of facing the public execution that had been scheduled for her 18th birthday, she was determined to die on her own terms. She was trying to make the world a better place, or at least that's what she told herself. She knew that what she was doing was dangerous, but it was also important. She hoped that her actions would make a difference, that they would help to bring about change. In the end, that was all that really mattered. She was going to die anyways, why not bring an empire on it’s knees in the process?
Maya couldn't help but wonder how Anika's mother had looked her in the eyes and chosen her to deliver the message to her daughter. Isis had planned this for eight months, under the heaviest scrutiny, and so far, everything was going according to plan. But she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something special about her that had caught Isis's attention. She wondered what it was that had made her stand out from their cell mates. She knew that she had to focus on the task at hand, but the question lingered in her mind. She couldn't help but feel a sense of curiosity about what made her so special.
She was the youngest person she’d ever heard of sentenced to death. Maybe that’s why Isis thought she’d be a good fit? Her stature was smaller compared to her adult cohabitants, so maybe Isis thought she’d be able to remain undetected better than anyone else?
Whatever. It didn’t matter, Maya told herself with a scowl. It was just her desperation for paternal affection reminding Maya of the hole in heart. Nothing to dwell over. Their were lives at stake, for crying out loud.
Maya walked through broken glass and heaps of garbage that littered the area. It was no wonder that this place had become home to the worst offenders - traitors, killers, and the like. The place was barely habitable for any kind of civilized being. The stench of the garbage mixed with the muggy scent of the polluted rain, making it even more unpleasant. Maya couldn't help but feel a sense of disgust at the sight and smell of the place.
She walked cautiously through the rubble of the Penitentiary District. The buildings around her were nothing more than piles of debris, and the stench of decay hung heavily in the air. She stepped carefully, her boots crunching on the broken concrete. As she moved further away from the district, the debris thinned out, and she could see the residential districts in the distance. They were like a beacon, a promise of safety and comfort.

2023.06.05 04:45 Ilovecoloring122 court date in 3 days to get more time with my kids after fighting for nearly 4 years

So this all started back in 2019 before covid, me and the ex started the process for divorce. Now when we initially split up she decided on this very restrictive schedule for me to spend time with my kids, i didn't have a lawyer at the time and i was so fragile and distraught from the entire ordeal, finding out she cheated on me, kicking me out of the apartment etc. So i just agreed because i didn't know any better and was emotionally a mess. The schedule i had was (looking back on it) an absolute joke it was Week 1. 5pm-7pm Wednesdays Week 2 Friday 5pm-sunday 5pm
That's it, after several months of this and therapy on my side, i got the strength and money to get a lawyer, and we fought for a more fair schedule, we managed to get me an extra day, so week 1 we added overnights on Thursday, not the best but it was something. I am not going to go into all the other details of the divorce but essentially at this point i had finally moved to my own apartment (2bedroom so the kids could have their own room) and i was getting my mental health in a much better spot as time went on so i started to fight her more for more time. We had to attend mediation which we did not agree to anything, then i requested a GAL to get involved. The court initially refused my request for more time since we had been on the current schedule for a while. So per my request the GAL got involved, did home visits and established that my place is fine, the kids love me, i love the kids, there bonded to me, and i provide a good/safe/healthy environment. So she put in a recommendation that i get more time. so the schedule i got, and have been on for nearly 2 years now is
Week 1 Wed 5pm-friday 9am Week 2 Thursday 5pm-sunday 5pm +vacation and birthday/holiday schedules
Which is a lot better, but its still not really what i wanted but i had to accept it and just move on. over the past 18 months i have been taking every opportunity for more time with the kids that come up, sometimes she will ask me if i can watch them an extra day for w/e reason, sometimes its a logistics reason to make life easier etc, i tracked this data until..well even now, i did this so i could prove to the court that there is no issues with me having time, and i actively seek time out. There is no safety issues or concerns from her, otherwise why would she be agreeing so much to give me random days here and there. Now we lived in the same city so logistics were not to bad, but then early last year she moved about 45 min away, so now the kids had to go to school 45 min away from me when they were with me. Since she is listed as "primary" cause there needs to be 1 i had to adjust things to include 45 min to school in the morning, 45 min home to get to work, then 45 min to pick them up, and 45 min home. i had to do this only 2.5 times every 2 week cycle (since she would pick them up on week 1 Fridays)... so needless to say this was very hard.
i decided to save up and move closer to the kids, i found a house and moved so im only 10 min (with traffic) from my kids so the schedule is alot easier to maintain logistics, as well as nearly doubling my living space and having 3 bedrooms so each kids gets their own room + a play room, and a basement.
So in feb of this year i pulled the trigger on taking us back to court so i could get more time with the kids, i want an even 50/50 and there is no reason why i shouldn't be able. The fact that i have been seeking extra time and getting it by her either asking me directly, or me asking her and she agrees, as well as me moving 40 min away to be closer to them, +upgrading my place for the 2nd time to make sure they have enough room was enough to get it started. Now we had to go through mediation (again) of which i knew we would not agree but its a necessary stage to get to the court date, which is on tuesday. I am seeking a true 5050, which equals out to 1 more overnight/week. She did counter offer my request with more time with the kids, but its not consistent, its 1 more week of summer vaca/extra days here and there when the kids dont have school the next day for some reason, it averages out to half of what im asking so if this fails at the very least i should be able to get that as back up, but there really is no reason why i shouldn't be able to get more time with my kids, hopefully this is the last time i need to go through the court systems for stuff like this, but i will continue to fight the good fight in order to spend more time with my kids.

2023.06.05 04:45 crabbyreader Developing a easy to use, lightweight, digital collector...

Look, I have got to admit that I have been running nearly my entire adult life. I have run roads, and trails. I typically like to pick up an piece of trash with every outing. I rarely do. Why? It is easy to do, but, where you gonna put it?. In your pocket? In your hand?
If I'm out for a run I don't want that, potentially icky, piece of trash hanging around any longer than necessary. How do I stash this thing?
Also, why pick up just the very occasional speck of trash? One, two, or maybe three specks hardly seem to matter. So, don't bother even picking it up at all.
Next time I'm out it doesn't surprise me to see that same speck and likely new specks.
I am currently working to create a lightweight grabber pole/walking stick with a collection chamber. The collection chamber, attached low on the thigh to allow easy grabber access to the disposal port, is situated away from natural arm motions. Ideally, I expect to digitize this and provide app connectivity. Then I can set personal goals..and count my specks.

2023.06.05 04:33 Tangou-888 The Hoax Story of Remarkable Testimony of a Buddhist monk in Myanmar (Burma) (Part III)

___________________________________________________
Taken from http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2008/12/14/when_jesus_met_buddha/ for the intellectual discussion purposely. Not for commercial gain
When Jesus met Buddha Something remarkable happened when evangelists for two great religions crossed paths more than 1,000 years ago: they got along By Philip Jenkins December 14, 2008
While few mainline Christians would put the matter in such confrontational terms, any religion claiming exclusive access to truth has real difficulties reconciling other great faiths into its cosmic scheme. Most Christian churches hold that Jesus alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and many also feel an obligation to carry that message to the world's unbelievers. But this creates a fundamental conflict with the followers of famous spiritual figures like Mohammed or Buddha, who preached radically different messages. Drawing on a strict interpretation of the Bible, some Christians see these rival faiths as not merely false, but as deliberate traps set by the forces of evil.
Being intolerant of other religions - consigning them to hell, in fact - may be bad enough in its own right, but it increasingly has real- world consequences. As trade and technology shrink the globe, so different religions come into ever-closer contact with one another, and the results can be bloody: witness the apocalyptic assaults in Mumbai. In such a world, teaching different faiths to acknowledge one another's claims, to live peaceably together side by side, stops being a matter of good manners and becomes a prerequisite for human survival.
Over the past 30 years, the Roman Catholic Church has faced repeated battles over this question of Christ's uniqueness, and has cracked down on thinkers who have made daring efforts to accommodate other world religions. While the Christian dialogue with Islam has attracted most of the headlines, it is the encounters with Hinduism and especially Buddhism that have stirred the most controversy within the church. Sri Lankan theologians Aloysius Pieris and Tissa Balasuriya have had many run-ins with Vatican critics, and, more recently, the battle has come to American shores. Last year, the Vatican ordered an investigation of Georgetown University's Peter Phan, a Jesuit theologian whose main sin, in official eyes, has been to treat the Buddhism of his Vietnamese homeland as a parallel path to salvation.
Following the ideas of Pope Benedict XVI, though, the church refuses to give up its fundamental belief in the unique role of Christ. In a widely publicized open letter to Italian politician Marcello Pera, Pope Benedict declared that "an inter-religious dialogue in the strict sense of the term is not possible." By all means, he said, we should hold conversations with other cultures, but not in a way that acknowledges other religions as equally valid. While the Vatican does not of course see the Buddha as a demon, it does fear the prospect of syncretism, the dilution of Christian truth in an unholy mixture with other faiths.
Beyond doubt, this view places Benedict in a strong tradition of Christianity as it has developed in Europe since Roman times. But there is another, ancient tradition, which suggests a very different course. Europe's is not the only version of the Christian faith, nor is it necessarily the oldest heir of the ancient church. For more than 1,000 years, other quite separate branches of the church established thriving communities across Asia, and in their sheer numbers, these churches were comparable to anything Europe could muster at the time. These Christian bodies traced their ancestry back not through Rome, but directly to the original Jesus movement of ancient Palestine. They moved across India, Central Asia, and China, showing no hesitation to share - and learn from - the other great religions of the East.
Just how far these Christians were prepared to go is suggested by a startling symbol that appeared on memorials and stone carvings in both southern India and coastal China during the early Middle Ages. We can easily see that the image depicts a cross, but it takes a moment to realize that the base of the picture - the root from which the cross is growing - is a lotus flower, the symbol of Buddhist enlightenment.
In modern times, most mainstream churches would condemn such an amalgam as a betrayal of the Christian faith, an example of multiculturalism run wild. Yet concerns about syncretism did not bother these early Asian Christians, who called themselves Nasraye, Nazarenes, like Jesus's earliest followers. They were comfortable associating themselves with the other great monastic and mystical religion of the time, and moreover, they believed that both lotus and cross carried similar messages about the quest for light and salvation. If these Nazarenes could find meaning in the lotus-cross, then why can't modern Catholics, or other inheritors of the faith Jesus inspired?
Many Christians are coming to terms with just how thoroughly so many of their fundamental assumptions will have to be rethought as their faith today becomes a global religion. Even modern church leaders who know how rapidly the church is expanding in the global South tend to see European values and traditions as the indispensable norm, in matters of liturgy and theology as much as music and architecture.
Yet the reality is that Christianity has from its earliest days been an intercontinental faith, as firmly established in Asia and Africa as in Europe itself. When we broaden our scope to look at the faith that by 800 or so stretched from Ireland to Korea, we see the many different ways in which Christians interacted with other believers, in encounters that reshaped both sides. At their best, these meetings allowed the traditions not just to exchange ideas but to intertwine in productive and enriching ways, in an awe-inspiring chapter of Christian history that the Western churches have all but forgotten.
To understand this story, we need to reconfigure our mental maps. When we think of the growth of Christianity, we think above all of Europe. We visualize a movement growing west from Palestine and Syria and spreading into Greece and Italy, and gradually into northern regions. Europe is still the center of the Catholic Church, of course, but it was also the birthplace of the Protestant denominations that split from it. For most of us, even speaking of the "Eastern Church" refers to another group of Europeans, namely to the Orthodox believers who stem from the eastern parts of the continent. English Catholic thinker Hilaire Belloc once proclaimed that "Europe is the Faith; and the Faith is Europe."
But in the early centuries other Christians expanded east into Asia and south into Africa, and those other churches survived for the first 1,200 years or so of Christian history. Far from being fringe sects, these forgotten churches were firmly rooted in the oldest traditions of the apostolic church. Throughout their history, these Nazarenes used Syriac, which is close to Jesus' own language of Aramaic, and they followed Yeshua, not Jesus. No other church - not Roman Catholics, not Eastern Orthodox - has a stronger claim to a direct inheritance from the earliest Jesus movement.
The most stunningly successful of these eastern Christian bodies was the Church of the East, often called the Nestorian church. While the Western churches were expanding their influence within the framework of the Roman Empire, the Syriac-speaking churches colonized the vast Persian kingdom that ruled from Syria to Pakistan and the borders of China. From their bases in Mesopotamia - modern Iraq - Nestorian Christians carried out their vast missionary efforts along the Silk Route that crossed Central Asia. By the eighth century, the Church of the East had an extensive structure across most of central Asia and China, and in southern India. The church had senior clergy - metropolitans - in Samarkand and Bokhara, in Herat in Afghanistan. A bishop had his seat in Chang'an, the imperial capital of China, which was then the world's greatest superpower.
When Nestorian Christians were pressing across Central Asia during the sixth and seventh centuries, they met the missionaries and saints of an equally confident and expansionist religion: Mahayana Buddhism. Buddhists too wanted to take their saving message to the world, and launched great missions from India's monasteries and temples. In this diverse world, Buddhist and Christian monasteries were likely to stand side by side, as neighbors and even, sometimes, as collaborators. Some historians believe that Nestorian missionaries influenced the religious practices of the Buddhist religion then developing in Tibet. Monks spoke to monks.
In presenting their faith, Christians naturally used the cultural forms that would be familiar to Asians. They told their stories in the forms of sutras, verse patterns already made famous by Buddhist missionaries and teachers. A stunning collection of Jesus Sutras was found in caves at Dunhuang, in northwest China. Some Nestorian writings draw heavily on Buddhist ideas, as they translate prayers and Christian services in ways that would make sense to Asian readers. In some texts, the Christian phrase "angels and archangels and hosts of heaven" is translated into the language of buddhas and devas.
One story in particular suggests an almost shocking degree of collaboration between the faiths. In 782, the Indian Buddhist missionary Prajna arrived in Chang'an, bearing rich treasures of sutras and other scriptures. Unfortunately, these were written in Indian languages. He consulted the local Nestorian bishop, Adam, who had already translated parts of the Bible into Chinese. Together, Buddhist and Christian scholars worked amiably together for some years to translate seven copious volumes of Buddhist wisdom. Probably, Adam did this as much from intellectual curiosity as from ecumenical good will, and we can only guess about the conversations that would have ensued: Do you really care more about relieving suffering than atoning for sin? And your monks meditate like ours do?
These efforts bore fruit far beyond China. Other residents of Chang'an at this very time included Japanese monks, who took these very translations back with them to their homeland. In Japan, these works became the founding texts of the great Buddhist schools of the Middle Ages. All the famous movements of later Japanese history, including Zen, can be traced to one of those ancient schools and, ultimately - incredibly - to the work of a Christian bishop.
By the 12th century, flourishing churches in China and southern India were using the lotus-cross. The lotus is a superbly beautiful flower that grows out of muck and slime. No symbol could better represent the rise of the soul from the material, the victory of enlightenment over ignorance, desire, and attachment. For 2,000 years, Buddhist artists have used the lotus to convey these messages in countless paintings and sculptures. The Christian cross, meanwhile, teaches a comparable lesson, of divine victory over sin and injustice, of the defeat of the world. Somewhere in Asia, Yeshua's forgotten followers made the daring decision to integrate the two emblems, which still today forces us to think about the parallels between the kinds of liberation and redemption offered by each faith.
Christianity, for much of its history, was just as much an Asian religion as Buddhism. Asia's Christian churches survived for more than a millennium, and not until the 10th century, halfway through Christian history, did the number of Christians in Europe exceed that in Asia.
What ultimately obliterated the Asian Christians were the Mongol invasions, which spread across Central Asia and the Middle East from the 1220s onward. From the late 13th century, too, the world entered a terrifying era of climate change, of global cooling, which severely cut food supplies and contributed to mass famine. The collapse of trade and commerce crippled cities, leaving the world much poorer and more vulnerable. Intolerant nationalism wiped out Christian communities in China, while a surging militant Islam destroyed the churches of Central Asia.
But awareness of this deep Christian history contributes powerfully to understanding the future of the religion, as much as its past. For long centuries, Asian Christians kept up neighborly relations with other faiths, which they saw not as deadly rivals but as fellow travelers on the road to enlightenment. Their worldview differed enormously from the norms that developed in Europe.
To take one example, we are used to the idea of Christianity operating as the official religion of powerful states, which were only too willing to impose a particular orthodoxy upon their subjects. Yet when we look at the African and Asian experience, we find millions of Christians whose normal experience was as minorities or even majorities within nations dominated by some other religion. Struggling to win hearts and minds, leading churches had no option but to frame the Christian message in the context of non-European intellectual traditions. Christian thinkers did present their message in the categories of Buddhism - and Taoism, and Confucianism - and there is no reason why they could not do so again. When modern scholars like Peter Phan try to place Christianity in an Asian and Buddhist context, they are resuming a task begun at least 1,500 years ago.
Perhaps, in fact, we are looking at our history upside down. Some day, future historians might look at the last few hundred years of Euro- American dominance within Christianity and regard it as an unnatural interlude in a much longer story of fruitful interchange between the great religions.
Consider the story told by Timothy, a patriarch of the Nestorian church. Around 800, he engaged in a famous debate with the Muslim caliph in Baghdad, a discussion marked by reason and civility on both sides. Imagine, Timothy said, that we are all in a dark house, and someone throws a precious pearl in the midst of a pile of ordinary stones. Everyone scrabbles for the pearl, and some think they've found it, but nobody can be sure until day breaks.
In the same way, he said, the pearl of true faith and wisdom had fallen into the darkness of this transitory world; each faith believed that it alone had found the pearl. Yet all he could claim - and all the caliph could say in response - was that some faiths thought they had enough evidence to prove that they were indeed holding the real pearl, but the final truth would not be known in this world.
Knowing other faiths firsthand grants believers an enviable sophistication, founded on humility. We could do a lot worse than to learn from what we sometimes call the Dark Ages.

2023.06.05 04:17 GetReadyToRumbleBar Played 10 Different Mini Golf Courses - Lost Treasure Best Overall Course in Ocean City

Just came back from a trip to Ocean City, Maryland and surrounding area to play too much mini golf. Over 3 days, my wife and I did 10 courses and I wanted to do a quick write up.
TL:DR - Lost Treasure was the best in OC. Embers Island also fantastic. Look for coupons.
How we rated:
All courses were 18 holes, some locations had 2 courses on 1 property, each being rated independently. No Old Pro, we did most of those last time and prioritized newer (to us) courses.
We rated each course in 4 categories on a scale of 1 to 5, to create an average course score. This included:
A) Hole design/sport element/competition
B) Landscaping/beauty
C) Theme elements/narrative/immersion
D) Course enjoyability (Shade, location/geography, quality of setup and supplies, ease to walk through, clean/neat/no debris on the greens, employees care, passion seen throughout the course, etc.)
Our scores:
Viking Golf: 3, 3, 4, 4 = avg 3.5. Very well kept, refurbished pretty recently. Fun, unique theme, clearly a lot of whimsy and love went into making this course. Employes care and it shows. Good holes. Looking retro but well kept. Unusual theme, would go out of my way to play again.
Nick's Down Under (Australia): 3, 1, 2, 1 = avg 1.75. Pretty terrible. Very hard walk to through (lots of changes in step heights without clear indication, no clear paths, we joked it was full of "ankle breakers"). Worn, broken props and elements, bad hole design, no good landscaping. Just bad, so many flaws. This an old course without retro charm.
Buccaneers Booty (?) - Game World: 2, 3, 3, 4 = avg 3.0. Very nice course, looking a little rough though. Some of the big themetic elements need some TLC. A landscapist needs a day or 2 to spruce it up. Even in its rougher state, a very fun course to play. Clubs were very worn and sticky (?).
Lost Treasure - Diamond Course: 4, 4, 5, 5 = avg 4.5. Excellent course, lots of love. Gorgeous course to play and take in. Diamond better than Gold. Fun animatronics and design. So clean and neat, the staff deeply care and it shows. Great clubs. Employees were great! Very satisfying plunks when getting the balls into the holes.
Lost Treasure - Gold Course: 3, 4, 5, 4 = avg 4.0. Another excellent course, a step below Diamond. More challenging holes. See Diamond above.
Embers Island - Pirates Course: 5, 4, 4, 4 = avg 4.25. Excellent course, Pirates is better than Volcano. Cannonball effects not working, but per an employee, they should be fixed later June 2023. Great clubs. Employees also great!
Embers Island - Volcano Course: 4, 4, 4, 4 = avg 4.0. Excellent. Holes were well designed. Wish the fire and smoke effects on the volcano were working again. Animatronics not all working, probably due to sheer age but not due to staff neglect necessarily. Coupons online?
Nick's Maui: 2, 3, 3, 3 = avg 2.75. This course replaced the original Maui Mini Golf, very sad. All that gorgeous tropical landscaping and fun holes have been replaced with a shadow of its former glory. They kept some of the original theme elements, like the iconic sign. Holes are easy. Shallow hole issues. Why flags in each of the holes? Trash on on the ground. Lots of holes in ones, which suggests the hole design was too easy or straightforward. Nick has coupons.
Nick's Beachball: 3, 2, 3, 3 = avg 2.75. Fun if easy. Nice big umbrellas for shade. Nick uses cheap, plastic holes that are much too shallow. We had multiple instances where the balls popped out of the hole. That should never happen. Like other Nicks, each hole had flags in each hole. The ball would bounce back due to the flag staff in the way.
Nick's Dino & Mining Co.: 3, 2, 3, 4 = avg 3. Animatronics rough, most clearly damaged and no longer moving. Theme confusing? (Mining and dinos?!) Some holes were challenging, but clearly from a lack of thoughtful design. Flaws throughout but the best Nicks of the 4 we played. Nick needs to stop storing supplies in plain sight, looks crummy. Blue water at all Nicks just reminds me of toilet water. Balls and clubs more worn, like all Nicks.

Ranked in order:
1 Lost Treasure - Diamond, 4.5
2 Ember Island - Pirates, 4.25
3 Lost Treasure - Gold, 4.0 (tied for 3)
3 Ember Island - Volcano, 4.0 (tied for 3)
4 Viking, 3.5
5 Buccaneers, 3.0 (tied for 5)
5 Nick's Dino and Mining, 3.0 (tied for 5)
6 Nick's Beachball, 2.75 (tied for 6)
6 Nick's Maui, 2.75 (tied for 6)
7 Nick's Outback, 1.75
Hope this write up is helpful! There are some great mini golf courses in Ocean City and its well worth the trip to go play them.

2023.06.05 04:08 greenhinges 56 [M4F] three month romance

Summer is upon us and I want to find one secret friend to romance and make feel special for a time. I mean what are we going to do, run away and get married?
I want to find someone to do nice little sweet gestures for and to make smile. Ideally you're someone I'd want to have sex with but I won't pressure you and we don't have to. But dates and fun and touching and long conversations in person would be essential. Enough emotional intimacy that I miss you when you dump me as planned and move on with your regularly scheduled life.
You are intellectually curious about something, sweet when the mood calls for it, playful even if it takes a while, and able to make your own demands. We don't need to have the same hobbies and interests as long we're able to talk about them, but for what it's worth I am well-read and have lived in different hemispheres. Be attractive even if quirky, ready even if awkward and nervous, and for crying out freakin loud a good and consistent communicator as I will not afford patience for low effort responses initially and thenceforth. Please respond with an introduction that includes your location and be more specific than telling me you're in the Bay Area. Tell me your city, county, or neighborhood. I am in the East Bay, in The 510.
I do not "do this kind of thing" with any regularity. See my oldest post. That was my one exception. I really like people and especially women. I'm just under 5'11" and mostly white. I do solo backpacking but I'm not a hunk. I am very good with secrets. I am accustomed to cultural differences in all my interpersonal relationships so I'm open on your ethnicity and age.

2023.06.05 04:01 Chrisanova_NY Welcome, to anyone who shows. So wonderful to see you here. Some thoughts on the past 2.5 years, and why I made this sub.

I thought to create this group, right after Atobitt posted up a recent and very surprising rant about "shit not changing". As he was one of the older DD writers, I think we all assumed he was infallible, and unwavering. Turns out, he has frustrations like all of us. It reinforced my long-held belief, that while money is both a tool & weapon, more focus needs to remain on MORALE & ENDURANCE. This is why the memeposts & shitposts have been so important on the other subs. If we lose our morale, we lose this war. And it damn sure is a fucking war.
Which side will experience defeat first? ... The immovable object (legacy businesses, hedge funds, investment firms, et al) and their incestuous Slyvers-Megacorp cesspool of corruption and hubris, or the unstoppable force (a bunch of absolute retreads, who somehow experienced the serendipity of being in the right place at several of the right times.)
If we look back at Occupy Wall Street, and do introspection on our younger selves also, we see right away that it fizzled because it didn't involve fighting with one's MONEY. Signs and yells simply get dismissed, and outbursts resulting from subsequent hopelessness, result in jail time for the impatient. Now we play their MONEY game, only better than them, because we thrive on games. Problem-solving is job #1 with us, and them turning off the Buy Button pressed START for the biggest problem-solving game any of us have ever played.
So I would guess most of us thought this would be done 84 years ago, by Winter of 2021 (yep, here), especially with DRS taking hold. Then came 2022. And now we are halfway through 2023. Look no further than u/JonStewart, to correctly summarize what, again, most of us feared: that they are trying to wear us out, grind us down, wait for us to experience hardships, and/or just flat out die. (RIP to Blue Prince aka - Mr. Infinity Pool). I've seen many of the stories and comments over on the main sub (and the others) about people who have lost family members, while we wage our war of attrition with the greatest of sociopaths, psychopaths, and narcissists.
It's been a great curiosity of mine, to examining the stages of this journey. The original intent of WSB was to make a shitload of money, then changed into sticking it hedge funds, then shifted yet again to making great positive change on this earth, while simultaneously trashing SHFs and any related shitasses.
It's not FUD to admit that this has been a frustrating voyage. Many of us had jumped right into subs like Ape Philanthropy, with tales about how we are going to make our own great change to this physically, mentally, financially, and spiritually damaged earth. Now we see our plans put on back burners, while we still have to give midnight tuggies behind Wendy's, just to pay bills. So we endure, because we must. The outcome of this saga may present the only opportunity that most of us will have to effect an incredible positive change on the world we live in.
So with Atobitt expressing his annoyance, and many others making posts and comments seething with anger and even the beginnings of hopelessness, over the past few months, I thought it would be a good idea to craft a New York City "Apple Apes" ape haven. I hope we can get a lot of Apes / Ape-ettes in here, and for each other, we can all be that shoulder to lean on, that ear to listen, that nod that understands.
If all of you are still here, then dammit, I'm still here.

2023.06.05 04:00 UltraSecretAcc How to deal with work stress? I dont think I can take this anymore

Sorry if this is a bit of a long post but I also kinda just need to vent as well and really just the stuff that led up to my meltdown
I work at a gas station and the job itself isn't even bad. My usual tasks are just: cashier, restock, trash. The majority of my shift I work alone because though my schedule overlaps with 2 other people regularly, but they tend to be late or leave early extremely often like 30 minutes before but I don't really mind.
This weekend was really rough for me. I completely snapped honestly. Friday was my grandfathers birthday and he would've been 62 had he not passed away in november and I considered not going into work but I didn't want to cause any inconvenience plus I hate a short check and decided to just work my shift.
Someone wanted a propane tank exchange so I go out and unlock the propane storage and usually the person just drops off their empty one and grabs their own full tank. I point him to a full one and he grabs it out and then tries to HAND it to me instead of just putting it down. He didn't just gesture it towards me, no, he pushes it basically to my stomach and expected me to grab it but before I even could attempt to he lets it go so it fell on my foot. I was really frustrated but I tried not to show it and when he left i sat in the bathroom to breath and went about my workday after I told my manager.
Saturday I was doing the trash and after tying up a bag and throwing it in the dumpster and about to put a new bag in, I guess I had a guy waiting by the stand I didn't notice and he came over and snapped his fingers in my face and said "You work here? You have people (it was just him) waiting I can't believe this shit and please wash your fucking hands before touching my shit (cigarettes)." and some other stuff I don't really remember after that I think he was just mumbling to himself
After I checked the guy out, he took his cigs and then flipped me off and I guess at that point I just got overwhelmed and caved. I started crying like actually sobbing and I hid in the back until I could pull myself together and clean up and go back to work and just hope no one even saw..
Idk what to do I feel so weak rn and frustrated I hate it here how do I make this bearable I can't afford to just quit..

We are firmly of the belief that the current market cap is more than covered by the legacy investments that Cadence holds in various new technology metal companies and projects and that the addition of the Amapá stake to its portfolio can only be value enhancing. In our opinion, the development of Amapá will be transformational for Cadence and we see fair value at 71p/sh with plenty of upside potential.

2023.06.05 03:53 Subject-Object 31 [M4F] San Jose, California - Tell me your untold story

Maya Angelou said, "There’s no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you." We're all untold stories, unsaid voices that are untranslated and unstoppable. And that's why we want to reach out to others. To tell them our narrative and listen to theirs. I don't get the opportunity to converse with people often in real life. So that's why I'm here on reddit, because of this unspoken voice in me that wants to write, that wants to know someone's story. In doing so we're unraveling our bound stanzas, we're given gasps of air in the suffocating silence, we're making our abstract thoughts a concrete portrait.
I'm searching for a long-term correspondence, an intimate intellectual imaginative connection that travels into our unexplored continents, where we write freely without censoring our soul, following the relentless stream of consciousness to see where it leads. The most foreign place is another person's mind, because it's something we can never have access to, so what better way than to seek what is unattainable, what is forever out of my reach? I want to reach into it anyway, I want to write anyway even if the blueness in the sky is too far for my to reach, even if I don't know what it's like to be you, I want to try to understand. I want to understand because there's a painful passion that urges me to, an otherworldly desire to find someone who I get and who gets me, to find someplace sincere and wholesome and comfortable where the tumults and troubles of the world are diminished, where we can say the stuff we never get to say but want to.
I crave those long rambly heart-to-heart kind of conversations. The kind of conversations where you are an islet and the other person is an ocean, where you want to explore the sea that is their mind and it keeps on receding. The kind of conversations which leave you with a smile on your face that lasts all day. The kind of conversations that is like playing tennis without the net, free flowing and natural.
I use Reddit PM, not chat. Let's send fiery paragraphs of our passions, let's throw thunderbolts, let's gaze at the transcendent dreams that we have forgotten but which awaken, let's look at the small stuff of our days and see how they can be become big, let's talk about everything and anything meaningful and significant which evokes something visceral and vibrant in you. There's a wide variety of topics I'm interested in - science, art, culture, history, philosophy, psychology, politics, mythology, poetry, literature - we can draw parallels between different subjects. I want to draw connections to how your life is similar to the things I've read, to the collective tapestry of humanity. I want to know your interior and exterior, your worldview, your heaviness and your hope, what makes you the person you are. And maybe we'll become part of something greater than ourselves, as we realize what it means to be human through the eyes of another.
It would be nice if I could meet someone local, someone who shares my frequency, a kindred spirit, so I prefer people nearby. I live in the most expensive city in America where it's hard to make connections due to the hustle and grind culture here and I work a boring job, but I like to look up from the gutters to the sky to look at the vast space of potentialities, wondering if I'll ever find something in my life's journey. I'm an introverted individual, someone who’s curious about interdisciplinary topics. I'm tall, dark haired, and slim. My eyes are used to gazing at things in another dimension. I'm multiracial and have learned how to exist in the thresholds. Marriagefree, childfree, and petfree, there's not much I have in common with peers my age who are settling down, but I like to convince myself I'm fine with being alone. With a degree in liberal arts I'm a generalist rather than a specialist, and I'm all about knowing the reason behind everything.
C.S Lewis said, "Writing is like a 'lust,' or like 'scratching when you itch.' Writing comes as a result of a very strong impulse, and when it does come, I, for one, must get it out." Isn't it time you got it out? When's the last time you really got it on with someone, when you really got everything off your chest, when you didn't just say "I'm good"? I look forward to knowing the reason behind the things you do, at looking at your portrait, at reading your story.

2023.06.05 03:50 Guesswhos_coming Abortion and how it’s effecting my sex life

I’m (29F) scheduled to start my MA this coming Friday. This is my second abortion this year and honestly I’m not pleased with myself . My partner (28M)is a very sexual person which is not a problem but I feel like my libido has been in the trash since February of this year . Obviously, we still have sex but it’s not the same. I feel like I have a hard time allowing myself to give in to the sexual allure like I’m now damaged.
Has anyone else felt this way ? I’m not even sure what the technical term is ? I think I’m just depressed and the abortion have exasperated it .

But before we proceed to the awards, here's some...

Art You Can Own!

Space Marines for the 72nd Mechanized Brigade by brammo1991
u/brammo1991 improves Warhammer 40K figures with Ukrainian livery, places them in wonderfully detailed dioramas, and auctions them off to benefit United24 and Come Back Alive. This weeks offering honors the 72nd Mechanized Brigade. Check out the full diorama here, and pop on over to eBay to bid on it!

L-R: Limited edition engraved knife and painted bullet shells by Maxim Kilderov
Artist u/kilderov, whom you can read about here, was forced to leave occupied Nova Kakhovka for his own safety. He now sells his work to support the civilians in his city and the warriors from it, who are mostly fighting in and around Bakhmut. In addition to his ongoing painted shells initiative, he's currently selling a limited edition series of engraved knives signed by the artist. Also, check out his latest post and DM him if anything catches your eye! (What I wouldn't give to be able to afford one of his boomsticks boomboxes....)
So far, Ukraine, you've helped him raise over $16,000 for Humanity, which provides humanitarian aid and evacuation in Nova Kakhovka and Kherson, and for Nova Kakhovka's warriors at the front. Here's a great example of what he's doing with the funds you help him raise.

L-R: Upcycled russian materiel by 21vetal01 and treasure box by his wife
u/21vetal01, whom you can read about here, turns scraps of destroyed russian equipment into trophies and souvenirs, and his wife makes beautiful little treasures and beautiful little treasure boxes. Proceeds support every facet of the war effort, from military aid to humanitarian aid to cash assistance for families of the fallen. Here are some examples of what they make, here's their latest work, and here's a small example of what they do with the funds they raise.

Glory to Ukraine's air defenders [OC], created and submitted by u/booksbeer.
