hey everyone,
i’m trying to develop my psychic gifts and would love to be directed to any resources like books, videos, movies, etc for reference and guidance. i know the concept/language of “psychic gifts” isn’t canon in Hoodoo…
the closest term i’ve come across to describe my gifts that would applicable to Hoodoo would be what some Christians call a Seer or a Prophet. which i resonate with but all the resources i’m coming across for developing your gifts as a Seer are sooooo evangelical and i just cannot relate to that. i enjoy using Bible verses in my practice but the videos i’ve come across be on some Joel Olsteen-TD Jakes evanglical shit that i just don’t vibe with.

What if I told you Memphis made Peyton Manning the QB he is today? In 1996, Memphis hosted junior QB Peyton Manning and #6 Tennessee late in the season. Memphis was just 3-6, while Tennessee was 6-1 and in the hunt for a national title. In true college football chaos fashion, the 26 point underdog Tigers pulled off a 21-17 win, scoring a TD with just 34 seconds to go. Returner Kevin Cobb took back a controversial 95 kick return for TD in which it looked like his knee was down, but the refs ruled it a TD. The play won an ESPY for college football play of the year, and the win was one of the biggest in school history.

60 NFL players is a LOT. Especially for a Group of 5 team. Memphis has produced the most NFL draftees of anyone on the list so far with 60, more than the 6 Power 5 teams we’ve seen including Iowa State, Indiana, Kansas, and Rutgers. Primarily they’ve been a RB factory in recent years, producing NFL RBs DeAngelo Williams, Tony Pollard, Antonio Gibson, Darrell Henderson, and Kenneth Gainwell. The first 3 produced 1000+ yard rushing seasons in the NFL, while Gainwell ran for 100 yards in a playoff game last year, and Henderson won a Super Bowl with the Rams recently. They also have a shout to be Special Teams U, producing All-American K Joe Allison, All-American P Tom Hornsey, NFL 2010s All-Decade K Stephen Gostkowski, and current NFL starting kickers Jake Elliott and Riley Patterson.

Worst Season: 2010 (1-11 overall, 0-8 Conference USA)
I can only imagine how helpless Dontari Poe felt. The 6’3 345 lb DT would be drafted with the 11th overall pick just 2 years later, and was a standout talent on an otherwise hapless Memphis team. Memphis ranked bottom 5 in both offense (14.4 PPG) and defense (39.8 PPG) in 2010, losing 8 games by 20+ points. Freshman punter Tom Hornsey probably enjoyed the inept offense, getting to punt 80 times for a 42.7 yard average. Hornsey would go on to be a consensus All-American 3 years later in 2013. They somehow beat Middle Tennessee 24-17, who made a bowl. But a 17-56 loss to 5-7 Houston was bad. Most of the blame fell on the shoulders of first year head coach Larry Porter, who prior to his hiring, had never been a head coach or even coordinator. Porter came from LSU’s RB coach position, and has returned to coaching RBs ever since his firing in 2011. As one cfb member put it, “Larry Porter almost got our program cancelled.”
5. 2003 (9-4 overall, 5-3 Conference USA)
After beating Tennessee Tech 40-10 in the opener, Memphis made themselves nationally known in week 2, beating Eli Manning and Ole Miss 44-34. Memphis QB Danny Wimprine outdueled Manning, throwing for 355 yards and 3 TD with no picks, also catching a 34 yard pass on a trick play. Future NFL RB Deangelo Williams burst onto the scene, racking up 166 and 3 TD from scrimmage on 32 touches. Ole Miss was a good team that year too, they’d finish 10-3 with a #13 final ranking. Memphis had a hangover after the game though, and won just 1 of their next 4. They grouped together to win 5 straight by an average score of 37-14, before losing to USF 16-21 in the final regular season game. Tied for 3rd place in C-USA, Memphis faced 3 straight Sun Belt champs North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl, shutting down any UNT passing game for a 27-17 win. Junior QB Danny Wimprine threw for 3000+ yards with 22 TD 13 INT, and would finish his career next season as Memphis’ all-time leading passer with 10,215 yards and 81 TD. DeAngelo Williams won C-USA Offensive POTY with just 11 games played, going for 1814 yards from scrimmage. Sophomore K Stephen Gostkowski was 19/29 on FGs.
4. 2017 (10-3 overall, 7-1 American)
By 2017, Memphis was known as one of the more solid Group of 5 programs, having gone 27-12 over the previous 3 years, located in an area with lots of local talent. QB Riley Ferguson and WR Anthony Miller returned for their seniors year after a great 2016 connection, and would level up in 2017. In week 3 they hosted #25 UCLA and Josh Rosen, who had just completed a 34-point comeback against Texas A&M 2 weeks prior. Ferguson was the better QB on the day, throwing for 6 TD in a 48-45 upset win. After a 3-0 start they’d lose 13-40 to a UCF team that would finish the season unbeaten. A few weeks later, a 30-27 win over #25 Navy would give Memphis their second win over a top 25 team in one season, their first time ever doing so. Other wins included 42-38 over Houston after being down 14-31 in the 3rd quarter, 66-45 over 7-6 SMU, and 70-13 over East Carolina. It was #20 UCF (11-0) vs #20 Memphis (10-1) for the AAC title, and UCF, a team of destiny that year, would win 62-55 in OT in one of the games of the year. Memphis played an emotional Iowa State team in the bowl, who was having their best season in decades, and lost by 1 point.
Ferguson threw for 4257 yards 38 TD 9 INT, completing a fantastic 2-season career after transferring from community college. RB Patrick Taylor Jr. got the bulk of carries with 157 for 866 yards and 13 TD, but it was Darrell Henderson who popped off with 1154 rushing yards on 8.9(!!!) yards per carry. Anthony Miller was a consensus All-American with 96 catches for 1462 yards and 18 TD, leading the nation in TD catches. LB Genard Avery had a stellar season on the defensive side with 80 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and 13.5 TFL.
This was one of the best offenses in the country, ranking 2nd in PPG with 45.5.
3. 2015 (9-4 overall, 5-3 American)
Justin Fuente was building something special at Memphis. Hired to clean up the mess Larry Porter left, Fuente had Memphis go 10-3 in 2014, his 3rd year, ending on a 7 game win streak. With that momentum, the Tigers started hot in 2015. A 55-23 win over Kansas in week 2 wasn’t even close, outgaining them 651-359. After wins over eventual MAC champion Bowling Green, and eventual bowl teams Cincinnati and USF, Memphis improved to 5-0, set to host #13 Ole Miss. In front of 60,000 fans, Memphis owned the Rebels, scoring 31 straight points in a 37-24 win. Memphis looked like a legit team that could compete with Power 5 schools for the first time ever. 2 wins later, they were up to #13 in the nation with a win streak of 15 games dating back to last season. The wheels would fall off against 6-1 Navy though. A -3 turnover margin was costly, as Navy just chewed clock on drives in a 45-20 win. Navy would go on to finish #18 and Keenan Reynolds was top 5 in Heisman voting. Originally the media darlings as the top ranked G5 team, #21 Memphis now faced unbeaten #24 Houston, who came back from down 34-14 in the 4th quarter to win by 1 point. Memphis slipped again, losing 12-31 to a really underrated Temple team, before taking their frusturations out in a 63-0 win over SMU. The 63-0 win had…the wildest statline I’ve ever seen? Ferguson went 9/14 on passes for 222 yards and 7 TD. Seven touchdowns on nine completions???
The year ended with an uneventful 31-10 loss to Auburn in the bowl. It was kind of a “what if” season for Memphis, losing 4 of their last 5, but still their 3rd best season in the last 40 years. Lynch parlayed a 3776 passing yard 28 TD 4 INT season into a 1st round selection by the Denver Broncos, successfully scamming the Elways. Somewhat deserved though, this team had just 1 other 1st/2nd team all-conference player in OL Taylor Fallin, so Lynch carried most of the load. Fuente left for the head coaching job at Virginia Tech after the season.
2. 2014 (10-3 overall, 7-1 American)
The year before 2015 was slightly better. This team was young and nobody knew who they were yet, as they’d gone just 12-48 over the previous 5 seasons. The media could smell something brewing under Fuente though, as Memphis was picked 7th out of 11 teams in the American, giving them a solid shot at making a bowl. Memphis surprised everyone in week 2, playing #11 UCLA to a 35-42 loss in the Rose Bowl (venue, not game). A 41-14 win over Cincinnati in week 5 signalled that Memphis had truly arrived, the offense clicking on all cylinders with 610 yards and 0 turnovers. After a loss to Houston, Memphis was 3-3 and 1-1 in the American, about to get into the meat of conference play. Easy wins over SMU and Tulsa improved their record to 5-3, and a walkoff FG for a 16-13 win over 5-3 Temple earned them bowl eligibility for the first time in 6 years. At 6-3 and 4-1 in the American, Memphis just needed to win their last 3 games to claim the conference title. A soft remaining schedule consisted of Tulane, USF, and UConn, whose combined record at the end of the year was 9-27. Memphis won all 3 easily, and clinched a share of the American title with Cincinnati and UCF, completing a dream regular season. They had a wild game in the Miami Beach Bowl, beating BYU 55-48, and tempers erupted at the end of the game, leading to one of the best brawls of the decade.
Memphis achieved double digit wins for the first time in school history and finished #25, their first top 25 finish ever. LB Tank Jakes won AAC Defensive POTY with 92 tackles, 6 sacks, and 9.5 TFL. K Jake Elliott was the AAC Special Teams POTY, going 21/32 on FGs, ranking 1st in the AAC in scoring, and hit a 54 yard FG in the bowl. Justin Fuente won AAC Coach of the Year. Memphis football was back!
1. 2019 (12-2 overall, 7-1 American)
This team was LOADED offensively. QB Brady White, the second year starting QB who transferred from Arizona State, could hand the ball off to future NFL RB Kenneth Gainwell, or throw to all-conference WR Damonte Coxie or future NFL players Antonio Gibson and Calvin Austin III. The year started strong with a 15-10 shutdown of Ole Miss, followed up by a 5-0 start. #23 Memphis lost in a 28-30 upset to Temple, but that’d be the Tigers’ last loss all regular season. With College GameDay attending, #24 Memphis beat #15 unbeaten SMU 54-48 in an absolute barnburner, Antonio Gibson going for 97 rushing yards, 130 receiving yards, 159 kick return yards, and 3 total TD. And he touched the ball just 12 times!!! That’s 386 yards on 12 touches! Memphis needed to win their final regular season game against #19 Cincinnati to make the American championship game, and grinded out a 34-24 win. The two would rematch a week later, and Cincinnati would give a better effort, but the Bearcats were too depleted at this point in the season, and Memphis scored a late TD to win 29-24 and claim their 2nd conference title in 5 years. #17 Memphis earned the Group of 5 slot for a New Years 6 bowl and played admirably against #10 Penn State, losing 39-53 in a fun game. The two were polar opposites, Memphis throwing for 479 yards and rushing for 53, while Penn State threw for 133 and rushed for 396.
Brady White finished 2nd Team all-conference, throwing for 4014 yards 33 TD 11 INT. He’d go on to finish his career a year later as Memphis’ all-time leading passer with 10,949 yards and 92 TD. Freshman RB Kenneth Gainwell had an unreal year, rushing for 1459 yards and 13 TD on 6.3 YPC while also catching 51 passes for 610 yards and 3 TD. WR Damonte Coxie was 2nd Team all-conference with 1276 receiving yards. Do-it-all WR Antonio Gibson put on a show all year long with 369 rushing yards and 4 TD on 11.2 YPC, 38 catches for 735 yards and 8 TD, and won AAC Special Teams POTY with 28 yards per kick return and a TD. Even TE Joey Magnifico was all-conference.
2019 Memphis is my 42nd best Group of 5 team since 1983.

Fuente rescued Memphis from the depths they were in and built a solid foundation, while Norvell took it a step further, making a New Years 6 Bowl. How would you rank these QBs in college: Paxton Lynch, Riley Ferguson, and Brady White? How would you rank these RBs in college: DeAngelo Williams, Darrell Henderson, Tony Pollard, Kenneth Gainwell? What’d you think of those Fuente/Norvell teams that were beating top 25 teams on a yearly basis, were you scared of them? And how do you think Memphis should fare when it comes to conference expansion, are they a nice program to add?

West of the Citadel Clouds, Bordering Mountain Pines and fickle Seashine Lies the renowned Port Cardica Where sailors sing and blight-born orphans dream. 

Chapter 1
A Slip Away from Death
Like most boys, Jake chose snoring in the pews over memorizing the Church’s proverbs. A clear mistake, he realized, as the Pastor's warning that “prayer follows danger” proved true. Hanging precipitously from the cliff’s edge, Jake recited every Creed he could remember in a futile attempt to appease any watching Gods.
“Prosper in his light, heathentry outside his sight,” he prayed, feet kicking in a desperate search for better footing.
It was a stowaways’ stanza, a tenet meant to share wisdom in ways the thickest of Port Cardica’s orphan dockboys could understand but, like most doctrine, its religious meaning was lost in translation.
Instead, the impoverished boys interpreted it as a practical warning to keep their heads down. Everyone knew the city’s Nobles revered the Book and claimed their prosperity was proof of Gods’ favor. Of course, beggars knew better: one downward glance at them revealed the decay fueling Cardica’s burgeoning wealth. Still, the poor learned to philosophize quietly. Someone was to blame for the hoveltowns, bird droppings, and penetrating seafood stink, and it better not be you.
For his part, Jake blamed himself. If he’d scaled the cliff wall with just a bit more care and a bit less haste he’d never have slipped. Instead he’d been forced to violently slow his descent, bruising bones and trading skin for friction on the vertical slope. It wasn’t a graceful maneuver by any means, but it beat falling hundreds of feet into the freezing current below. Thankfully, years as a guttersnipe had honed his reflexes – his gangly arms lacked the strength of a Swordsquire or the coordination of a Majpupil, but his daily dance with starvation demanded nimble fingers and quick wit.
That experience wasn’t paying off. As Jake shuffled his feet around to find better purchase, his hands slipped on the accruing condensation from the ongoing manastorm. His grip flagged, then failed, and he had neither the magic nor the strength to escape the weight of gravity.
“It isn't written, it isn’t written” Jake recited frantically as he began to plummet. The other dockboys would laugh at his superstition, but he didn’t care. Many claimed the Creeds were lucky, and Jake desperately needed some luck. Instinctively he spread his arms out as wide as possible, hoping to extend his reach and grip onto something.
By some miracle, It worked. The resounding sound of cloth ripping accompanied Jake as he slammed into the stone cliff, teetering to a stop. He hung like a rag doll, held up only by the hem of his matted, brown tunic; the cheap weavings had snagged and torn on an outcropping of stone.
“Aughhh” he mumbled.
He had survived, but everything hurt. Looking down to inspect the damage, Jake saw that his calloused hands were raw and pebbled, but a quick flex confirmed he hadn’t broken any fingerbones. Breathing a sigh of relief, he gasped at the telltale sting every kicked streetrat knew so well.
“Po-Poet’s hand,” Jake swore.
He grabbed the cliff wall to stabilize himself and, seeing as it had worked so far, continued reciting the few Creeds he could remember. A minute passed before he was able to think clearly, but slowly Jake got his breathing under control and continued his self-assessment.
Overall, he felt like things couldn’t have gone much worse. His cracked ribs hurt and continuing the heist would only exacerbate the damage, leading to scarring or permanent hobbling. Jake had seen many dockbeggars with similar injuries from fights or beatings, unable to walk straight without being plagued by the stitchers cough.
For this reason alone, Jake briefly considered giving up. He quickly dismissed the idea – it might be madness to continue climbing in his condition, but he’d come too far to back out now. He’d planned this heist for months, obsessively pathing his break-in while waiting for a night when security would be light. In retrospect, he’d been a fool; his overly cautious preparations left no possibility for a second attempt before his 15th birthday.
No, despite his injury tonight was still his best hope to successfully steal a Scriptors’ Grimoire before Binding Day. Failure would mean enslavement as a Ruddite or worse, full Automation. He’d just have to trust the windy weather to mute his movements and the harvest moons to light his way.
So, teeth chattering with cold and fear, Jake resumed the ascent. His ribs sang in agony as he put one hand in front of the other, slowly turning small divots into handholds, footholds and leverage. Each bouldering movement made him wince, but over the years he’d honed the art of turning sweat and grit into capillary action. He’d had no other choice; richmen shared a passion for building impenetrable estates, forcing thieves to develop an unshaking hand at scaling them.
Five painstaking minutes of climbing later and Jake regained his original position. Salty sweat matted his brow and stinged his eyes but he persevered. He blinked slowly to clear his vision and shuffled his feet left over right, shivering his way across an inch-wide protrusion. Just a few meters above him stood the lip of the granite outcropping and access to the marble fortress built upon it. Jake tasted copper as he bit the inside of his cheek in anticipation – If the heist went well he’d finally change his destiny and be able to swear upon the Sermon’s Book on his own terms.
But first he had to finish the climb. He knew the manor’s sentries rotated hourly, eyes glued to the sky as they watched for flyingmen and attacks from above. He also knew that all these guards would be literate, but none especially gifted. After all, no one powerful enough to be a Writer would stand watch over another man's fortune. The chartered Maji Wordlings, on the other hand, could easily detect Jake if he hadn’t planned for them in advance. He chose tonight because it was the season’s Lenting, meaning the majority of Maji would be in communion until the sun rose.
“What is written” a gruff voice proclaimed, startling Jake.
It was muffled by the wind, so it took him a moment to realize it was coming from directly above him. Jake craned his neck and peered up; to his horror he could see the silhouette of a guard's shadow on the cliff wall.
Petrified, Jake hugged his body to the cold granite, hoping the darkness of the windy night would hide his form. His entire plan hung on the simple thesis that in a world of magidetectors and magflight, no one would expect an unbound to scale the walls. Great in theory, but what if a guard just happened to look down?
“Is Foretold and Forbidden,” another voice chanted, completing the customary greeting. “All safe on the watch?”
“All is safe and silent, as usual,” the first man grunted.
“Don’t sound so upset,” the second laughed. ”We chose this job because it’s easy, remember? No more treading through the mud, no more war with those blasted barren beasts and their infernal warlocks.”
“That’s true, althou..”
The men’s voices were swept up in the wind as they paced further down the stone perimeter. They hadn’t seen him, but, just to be safe, Jake stayed low until he could no longer hear the stamping of metal-toed boots on stone. Then, fingers white and aching in trepidation, he waited another 30 seconds.
Finishing his count, Jake peaked over the edge. It took all the courage he had earned as a thief and every bit of boldness he had learned as a beggar, but he managed it.
The coast was clear.
Jake carefully pulled himself over the ledge before falling into a crouch. He looked around and exhaled painfully, releasing a breath he had not realized he was holding.
In front of him lay an outdoor walkway culminating in a rippling fountain circumscribed by five basalt pillars of progressively increasing height. Everflowing torches adorned each of the columns and burned despite the rain, casting rings of golden light throughout the open atrium. At the foot of the fountain rose a gold-leafed speaker's lectern, a pure white sculpture of the Sermon Book chiseled open upon it.
Jake stared openmouthed at the power radiating from the fountain before abruptly coming to his senses. Without a doubt this artifact was a Magisma, an extremely expensive construct meant to amplify its controller’s magic. Leaving it outside was a casual display of wealth and power meant to shock and impress, but Jake didn’t have time for that.
Instead Jake blended into the shadows cast by the monument as he sneaked his way across the grounds. After passing the walkway the torchlight dimmed considerably, forcing him to hobble his way in the dark. A bright flash startled him, but the acid smell of tobacco that accompanied it indicated the guards he’d seen earlier were smoking to pass the time. Realizing they were distracted, Jake sped up and almost tripped on the jutting crystals of an emerald rock garden. Embarrassed, he paused to listen for anyone approaching.
Everything was quiet except for the constant pitter, patter and hiss of rain from the manastorm. It seemed his home-invasion had so far gone unnoticed, but the hair on Jake’s neck rose. An unsettling feeling of being watched set in and every few seconds he reflexively looked over his shoulder.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, he made it to the Manor wall. Keeping to the shadows, Jake hid behind the tallest thing he could find; a towering yellow flower with leaves the size of platters that he had never seen before. Staying low, he muddied his knees and toes on the damp ground, but thankfully the foliage protected him from the rain. As his eyes adjusted to less light, Jake noticed all sorts of exotic fruits surrounding him; blood red berries in the shape of teardrops levitated inches off the ground, while turquoise bubbles floated up from vibrant greenery, collapsing quickly into little orange stones that looked remarkably like candy. Jake’s belly growled at the idea of tasting these treats, but he dismissed his urges. Stanzas warned that “those who leave riches unread become starving men” but Jake knew hunger well. He would jeopardize his mission by eating something that might make him sick tonight.
Instead, he focused on gaining entry to the manor. Searching his surroundings, Jake located the iron front doors about 6 meters to his right. They were guarded by life-like statues on either side, one a Korai of the Poet, hand outstretched in greeting, the other a two headed wolf, with both snarling maws crying out to the moons. The door itself was blacked with age and inscribed by a massive oval spellwork that glinted in the light cast by a hanging lantern.
Listening closely, Jake groaned at the buzz of silverscripting coming from the insignia. Every thief knew that spellworks grew more powerful over time, and anything audible would be too powerful for any Unbound to lockpick.

It was almost instantaneous. In just one week, we had witnessed three successive miracles, one of which we could not deny was otherwise completely unnatural.
The lightning had not struck the exact same place each time, when the rain had petered out, even in my nascent faith I had to check. It was a clear symbol, a dragon's head upon a shield. We carved it out of the ground in a block, and with newly gained reverence, we brought it to the Temple, where we displayed it prominently, a sign of Bahamut's power.
Galax stood before it, head bowed, hands clasped in prayer, and we echoed his movement. "Holy Bahamut, thank you for visiting upon us this miracle, This gift you have given us, indelible proof of your existence, of your glory, shall remain here, for as long as you will. May your guidance grant us peace and prosperity. May your Law bring us safety and guidance. Vinxa."
"Vinxa." We echoed.
Galax turned to face us and bowed his head. "I welcome you all, faithful new and old, to the Temple. If you are to be Clerics, you have already begun your first step, you know well what is needed." He held his right hand to his side. "Please, stand among us, you have earned your place."
Four Kobolds moved over to his side, as did two Humans.
"We're not capable of being Clerics-" One of them started.
"The Temple welcomes all." Galax spoke. "If your heart demands it, then you already stand beside us."
They bowed and stood with the others, a smile on their faces.
"There are some among you who have likewise awakened. Approach."
Tallyn walked forward, and immediately knelt.
"Speak." Galax stated.
"I, Tallyn, solemnly vow to devote my life to the Temple. I shall follow our God's teachings from this moment, forever, so long as my soul remains."
Galax nodded. "Rise, Dnilok Tallyn. Take your rightful place as the first of our Paladins." Tallyn smiled and stood to Galax's left. Nine more Kobolds stepped forward, and two Humans joined them. All spoke the same vow.
It was as the Humans finished, that Galax's eyes widened, and then he smiled. He accepted them, and they stood to his left.
"The rest who remain, you are no less a brother of the Temple. Your faith shall be a soothing balm in these trying times, and though not all believe, and though many do not follow, it is our duty to ensure, when the time is right, that all are given blessings, that all are beloved. Go forth, and honor our God in your every movement."
Stepping out of the Temple, I felt like a changed man. Walking back to the town, I saw the beauty of the world in a different light. Yes, a flower was just as beautiful, but now it felt like maybe it was beautiful for a reason, rather than just because of evolution.
I walked through the town, seeing the happiness of the people, even those who had not witnessed the miracle, I was simply happy they could be happy. The laughter of Human and Kobold children as they ran around without a care in the world reached my ears, and the idea there was a being out there capable and willing to protect them brought tears to my eyes.
"It is a beautiful day." A familiar voice spoke. I saw the man from the other day, still feeding some birds.
"Yes, it is." I said. I walked over to him and sat beside him.
"You have the look of a man who has had his entire world changed." He observed. "Have you accepted the notion of a miracle, or have you found some other explanation?"
"I watched lightning strike the same place over and over again, burning and carving the holy symbol of Bahamut into the earth." I said. "I watched as a sunny day filled with clouds and gave us life-sustaining water." I rubbed my hands together. "I dared a God to prove his existence, and he did."
The man laughed, it was the kind of musical laugh that would make anyone smile. "Is that so?" He asked. "Tell me, did your God require you to pray for this miracle, or would it have happened regardless?"
"Does it matter?" I asked.
"It does." He replied. "If you were required to, why? If you were not, was prayer truly necessary?" He paused, spreading seeds for the birds to eat. "Some people believe for good to come about, they must serve a God- yet even the faithless are capable of righteousness. Even the faithful are capable of great evil. "What, then, would a God have need to wait for a prayer?"
I wasn't entirely certain. "So that I would believe?" I asked.
"Would that not be a dishonest thing to do?" He asked.
"Then, perhaps because he couldn't intervene." I reasoned.
"Was the safe deliverance of this town from pain and strife that first night a random happenstance, perhaps? Was the stability of the mine truly random chance?"
"Then why?" I asked.
"Why indeed?" He asked. "The key to faith is not blind acceptance, but questioning and reasoning. Blind adherence to doctrine is blindness to the will of a God. One must understand why a God acts in the way it does."
There was a brief silence between us, he took this time to feed the birds more seed.
"Is faith not enough?" I asked.
"With the doubt I have instilled, is it?" He asked. "Do you hold love in your heart for your God, not truly knowing?"
I nodded.
"Why?" He asked.
"He didn't wait for us to pray." I said. "He waited for us to have all of our barrels in place, he waited to ensure where he would deliver his message would not harm others. He kept the mines stable not through his own power, but by ensuring everyone who could help was present. He ensured we were safe, that first night."
"Is this what you truly believe?" He asked.
"Yes." I said.
He nodded. "Then that is all you need." He said.
"What?" I asked.
"Truth is important." He said. "Yet not all truths are self-evident. You must be discerning in your faith, you must understand the truth, and adjust your beliefs when a conclusion is inaccurate. Blind faith is willingness to lie to oneself, and others. Blind skepticism is much the same. The path of truth is narrow and may be difficult, but it is never treacherous."
I nodded. "Thank you." I said.
"I have done something worthy of thanks?" He asked.
"Yeah. It takes a special kind of selflessness to ensure someone had the right reason to believe." I replied. "Especially when staying silent would guarantee someone joining your faith."
"You believe I am a follower of Bahamut?" He asked, sounding amused.
"Are you not?" I asked.
He chuckled. "I am a firm believer in the Tenets." He replied. "Without them, I would simply not live."
"Kind of extreme." I pointed out.
"Perhaps." He replied. "With your faith, what shall you do?"
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Will you leverage your influence to bring the masses into the faith, or will you stand aside to let them choose their own path?" He clarified.
I considered his words, then asked, "What would you do?"
He held his hand out, a bird flew to it, perching on his finger before chirping. "I would act justly, and let my actions speak for me." He answered. "Words are plentiful, and lies so easy to come by. Action is the greatest language of truth. It shows the world who you are, what you believe in, and most importantly-" The bird flew from his hand and perched on a branch above. "-it is far more lasting than any words ever could be."
I nodded. "I'm not entirely certain." I admitted. "I want to share this with everyone, to tell them there is a God who cares about us, who wants us to be safe."
"Presuming perfect success, that you lead these people into faith, what would you have them do?"
"I don't know."
He nodded. "You will find your answer." He said. "If I may, from one man of virtue to another, may I embrace you?"
I nodded. He put his arms around me, holding me close to him. I hugged him back, burying my face in his clothes. He smelled of honey and flowers. When he loosened his grip on me, I didn't want to let go. He gently patted my back and waited for me to loosen my own.
"May I know your name?" I asked.
He nodded. "I have taken on the name of Fizban." He replied. "Just as you have taken on the name of Ruuk. Hold true to the tenets, let your actions and your deeds be your sincerest prayer. Above all else, be kind, and know when you must invoke wrath."
With this said, he gently rest his hand on my head. "May your days be blessed." And then he walked away, flanked by the songbirds that seemed so drawn to him.
The next few days just kind of flew past me. I would work on my spellcraft, either by contributing electricity as needed or fixing things that were brought my way. Tallyn was accepted as the first Paladin of the Council, along with Tarhun, the Human Councilor who had taken on a new name in recognition of his place in the Temple.
"Even if I am incapable of magic, I serve as a Paladin to the Dragon God." He spoke.
With the first few wells dug, and their respective pumps passively drawing up water, we were getting to a point where we could start unclenching our ass cheeks. The Miracles were discussed, with those who were not present expressing skepticism. I admitted that I had been present to witness it, that the proof of the event was preserved in the Temple.
"Bahamut granted us his aid in our time of desperate need." Galax spoke. "I wish to propose that we build shrines throughout the town, in honor of him."
I shook my head. "No." I said. "While your duty is the spiritual well-being of the people, it is not the pursuit of evangelism. Does Bahamut not value action above objects?"
"There is no point in lying to the people, we have proof that power beyond our own has granted us safety and sanctuary. Would you disobey your God for the comfort of others?"
"That depends." I said. "Did Bahamut demand prayer, or would he have granted us rain without it?"
He paused. "I would like to believe he would do so out of the kindness of his heart." He said. "But does it matter? He is a God of Justice, of the equity between the Races. He is kind and merciful, gracious."
"Consider. If the Miracle required our prayers, why? And if it is not, was prayer truly necessary?" I echoed Fizban's words. "Galax, you were the first of our Clerics, the first of his faithful, yet the key to faith is not blind acceptance. It must be met with questioning and reasoning. Blind adherence to his doctrine is blindness to his will- we must instead understand why a God acts in the way they do."
He looked shaken by my question and answer.
"I speak in faith, Bahamut did bless us with rain, but he did not wait for us to pray. He waited until we were ready. Every barrel, every cup, every can- All things that we needed to gather as much water as possible. You gave to us a vision, and I reciprocated in action where I could not in faith. Regardless, he would have called the rain."
"How can you seek to shake my faith, yet still speak as though you believe?" Galax asked.
"Galax, I believe." I stressed. "If the people wish to have shrines built in the town, they will ask us. We will not enforce dogma on people who do not believe. That is an injustice."
The room was utterly silent as I finished. Galax stared at me with such a profound expression, that when he nodded, I knew he understood.
"You are right." He said. "Words and laws alone will not grow a faith. Thank you for your wisdom."
"It is the wisdom of Bahamut." I said. "Not mine."
He nodded.
I regarded the others. "This being said, I will stick to what is my duty, As far as I am concerned, my faith will not dictate my suggestions, all that matters is that we serve our people to the best of our ability. To that end, I would like to make a suggestion."
"What is your suggestion?" Nakk asked.
"We get a bigger table, so our Human compatriots don't have to stand on the other side of the room."
There was some laughter, the mood lightening.
After the meeting, I stood outside, remembering that scent of flowers and honey, and the man who challenged me to believe and to question that belief. I heart footsteps behind me and regarded Galax.
"If the people believed, our very existence would be glory unto Bahamut." He said.
"He will have to settle for what we give him." I said. "We've got more important things than establishing a theocracy."
He was silent for a moment. "Would that truly be so terrible?" He asked.
"Yes." I said. "It's not for us to decide. If Bahamut wishes to claim us, then he will have to make his glory known." I looked at him. "We do what we can, and must, for the sake of the people, not for the sake of our desires."
"I will remember this." He said. "In two days, I will abstain from prayer, and will instead ask the people to put out their barrels. I- I will test our God, to know what his will is."
"And if he demands prayer?" I asked.
"I shall give it." He replied. "And if he does not, I shall give it all the same." He smiled. "If we are to be ruled by faith, it will be manifest. If not, then we shall do our duty." He paused, then added, "In five days, I will perform a ritual with my fellow Clerics. I will not demand you be present, nor will I demand the people to come. All shall be invited."
I was curious as to what this ritual entailed, but he simply bowed to me and walked away.
I awaited the day Galax spoke of, when he gathered the faithful, he spoke: "This is not a prophecy, but a test of faith." He regarded us all. "We who offer our reverence to our God will put forth our barrels. We will not pray for water, we will simply wait and see. This is to answer an important question, one that will shape our understanding of our faith for years to come."
He touched his chest, above his heart. "Should the non-faithful among us ask if the rain is to come, we answer no. There is no prophecy, only a test of faith, to seek an answer. We shall ensure they understand if they wish to do the same, it is their choice, not ours."
We gathered our barrels and set them out, and we waited.
Not a head was bowed in prayer, we simply sat and observed. "This water is not needed." Galax spoke. "Nor do we demand or request it. This is a question asked, for we seek an answer."
We sat in the heat of the day, waiting, watching, and then the clouds gathered above, and the rain fell. Galax stood and faced us. "It is not by prayer that we solely are granted blessings, our God provides because he is just, and he is gracious! We, who have waited in silence, to learn and to understand, have our answer!"
The answer was thus: Blessings were not given to those who ask for it, but to those who are deserving. The rain was not needed, nor did we ask for it. The rain was not the gift we were given, but an answer to a question.
The decree of the Temple was thus: Prayer exists to speak words, but words are meaningless without action. As the day of the ritual neared, the sermons stopped, save for those spoken in the Temple. Our message was our actions.
"Our God commands us to do good, and in his honor, we do good."
The ritual was known about, the faithful gathered to observe, and curious onlookers watched as the Clerics and Paladins gathered around Galax's partner on the Council, who was dressed in a simple cloth robe.
"Jacob Morris, First of the Human Faithful. Upon the day I professed my faith in a God few considered real, upon the day I performed divine healings upon the people, you cast aside a past faith you did not truly believe in, a duty upheld only due to your father's will to serve his God, who spoke with the faithful of that God and advocated that we are and always have been family."
Jake, kneeling, looked up at Galax with an expression that could only be described as pure and undying love.
"You lived a life of lies, to grant comfort to those who needed it. You spoke words you did not believe in, to ensure those who did could find comfort. You gave lessons that truly aided them, rather than speak affirmations of blind faith. On that day, you cast aside those lies, to truly aid others, to meet them in faith and fidelity. You swore that day to reject convenient lies in the pursuit of truth and just leadership. Would you say this is true to this day?"
"I do." Jake replied.
"And would you say you have dedicated your life to him? Does your soul yearn to aid him in every pursuit?"
"Yes." Jake replied resolutely.
"Is it your wish to cast aside one last lie, to become a true child of Bahamut?"
"I would cast away the lie of my name, and the lie of my body, if it meant embracing the truth." Jake answered.
"Is it your intention to die?"
"No. I shall be reborn."
Galax nodded. "The dawn is upon us." He spoke solemnly. "You understand what it is that is required of you. We shall be at your side, that you remain uninterrupted, here where only those who seek to watch may pass by." He raised his hands to the sky. "Upon the sun's rising beyond the horizon, your ritual shall begin, and in two days' time, you shall be reborn, for Bahamut wills it."
We waited in anticipation, and the moment the sun began to rise, Jake sat down and began to meditate, the Clerics and the Paladins stood guard around him.
I couldn't stick around to watch the entire ritual, I had duties to attend to. Yet every now and again, I came by to see Jake in the process of making something, something I gradually realized was an egg. It was made of clay mixed with silver dust, yet as he added onto it, the clay changed color, turning from a colorless gray to a beautiful crimson.
It was upon the dawn of the second day that Jakes stripped naked and pressed his hand against the completed egg, before walking through the solid wall and into it.
"And so, a Human sheds their form, to be reborn anew." Galax spoke solemnly. The day passed as quickly as the last, and by now, word had spread as to what was going on. Everyone watched as the egg cracked, breaking apart, as a tall, scaled creature stood before us.
The way he looked at his body, the way he touched his scales, I could see he was overwhelmed with joy. As he stepped away from the crumbling egg, putting on the robe he had doffed the night prior, he knelt once more before Galax.
"Welcome back, child of Bahamut." Galax spoke with kind words. "What is your name?"
"I am Mitne Munthrek. In the eyes of the Platinum Dragon, I am the light of the first, I bear my heritage in my name with pride."
"In honor of our God, I welcome you, Mitne Munthrek, the first of Bahamut's Dragonborn upon this world. Rise, and be proud."
Mitne stood and took a few steps toward us. "All who are gathered, I am honored that you came. To you, you need only call me Mitne, and though I am no longer Human, if you will have me, I will continue to serve as your Councilor to ensure your voices are heard."

I love UL Lafayette. They rebranded as just “Louisiana” in 2017, but growing up I knew them as UL Lafayette. I was weirdly obsessed with 2005-08 starting RB Tyrell Fenroy, who I thought looked cool in the Ragin’ Cajuns uniform. Fenroy ran for 1000+ yards in each of his 4 seasons, only the 7th player in NCAA history to do so. Outside of that, Louisiana’s been a fairly solid Group of 5 team, especially in the 2010s, with their top 6 seasons all coming after 2010.

Like I alluded to in the intro, Louisiana would be a lot lower without the past decade. They’ve gone 98-57 since 2011, and just 123-190-1 before. 3 conference titles have come in the last decade, 1 in 2005, and 2 Big West titles under coach Nelson Stokley in 1993 and ‘94. Nelson is the dad of Louisiana all-time leading receiver and 15-year NFL veteran WR Brandon Stokley, who won 2 Super Bowls, had a 1000+ yard season with Peyton Manning at QB, and was the recipient of the famous “STOKELY! SIDELINE! TOUCHDOWN! WOW!” call from Gus Johnson on a winning TD in 2009. Stokley’s just one of many notable names to come out of Louisiana since 1983, others including QB Jake Delhomme, CB Charles “Peanut” Tillman, CB Ike Taylor, and RB Elijah Mitchell.

Top 5 Seasons

Worst Season: 1997 (1-10 overall, Independent)
Speaking of Nelson Stokley, in addition to winning 2 Big West titles, he had the worst season here. And I tell you what, the bar for failure just seems to keep getting raised for the “worst” teams on this list. UL Lafayette, back then known as Southwestern Louisiana, scored just 16.3 PPG while giving up the nation’s worst 50.3 PPG. It’s somewhat excusable given their first 4 games were against Pitt, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M, but it’s like they didn’t even try, losing 14-59 to Tech and 0-66 to A&M. WR Brandon Stokley did set the Louisiana school record for career receptions in the game against Texas A&M, with 173. The game was personal for A&M—just last year, Louisiana had beaten #25 Texas A&M 29-22 in the second week of the season, sending the Aggies into a tailspin and finishing just 6-6. After Louisiana started 0-5, they got their only win over eventual 2-9 team Arkansas State. They quickly followed it up with a 42-48 OT loss to FCS North Alabama, and lost the rest of their games with the final 3 weeks consisting of 0-56 to Tulane, 7-77 to #16 Washington State and Ryan Leaf, and 24-63 to Louisiana Tech. Nelson Stokley had built up enough good karma to stay for 1998, but was fired after going just 2-9.
5. 2013 (9-4 overall, 5-2 Sun Belt)
Most people think of 9/4 as Bo Pelini day for his time at Nebraska, but Mark Hudspeth and UL Lafayette were right there with him. Hudspeth led the Ragin’ Cajuns to 4 straight 9-4 seasons from 2011-14, so this was the 3rd iteration. A lot of talent returned from the 2012 team that finished 2nd in the Sun Belt, so the media picked Lafayette to win their first conference title since ‘05. After an 0-2 start against Arkansas and Kansas State, they locked in for conference play, winning 8 straight to improve to 8-2 with a 5-0 Sun Belt record. For no reason, they lost their last 2 games against 5-6 ULM and 5-6 South Alabama to fall to 8-4 and 5-2 in the Sun Belt, but thankfully on the final day, Arkansas State gave up a TD to Western Kentucky with 10 seconds left to have them fall to 5-2 just like UL Lafayette, and the two teams shared the Sun Belt title. Louisiana won the New Orleans Bowl for the 3rd straight year, 24-21 over Tulane, and they’d win it again next year for the 4th time. Both UL Lafayette RBs Alonzo Harris and Elijah McGuire made 1st Team All-Sun Belt with a combined 2219 yards and 25 TD from scrimmage.
4. 2012 (9-4 overall, 6-2 Sun Belt)
According to my algorithm, the 2012 team’s resume was ever so slightly better. A 5-3 UL Lafayette team had mostly beaten the teams they should’ve and lost to the teams they should’ve. They then took a trip down to Gainesville to play #7 Florida, who had one of the top defenses in the country but one of the weaker offenses in the Power 5. As usual, Florida was playing in the sand, down 13-20 with just 2:00 to go. Florida QB Jacoby Brissett fired a 2 yard TD with 1:30 left to tie it, and with just 10 seconds left, Florida blocked a punt and Jelani Jenkins took it back 36 yards for the winning TD. By some Will Muschamp black magic, the Gators had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat no matter how hard they tried to give the game away. Lafayette didn’t let the loss bother them, and finished the regular season on a 3 game win streak. They finished 2nd in the Sun Belt to Arkansas State, who won their 2nd straight title, and would go on to win 3 more over the next 4 years. Louisiana won a 43-34 shootout in the New Orleans Bowl over East Carolina and OC Lincoln Riley.
UL Lafayette kicker Brett Baer finished his career as the NCAA’s all-time leader in FG percentage (minimum 50 attempts) at 90%, going 45/50 over his career and 20/23 in 2012. He’s still #1 to this day. Sophomore QB Terrance Broadway completed 65% of passes for 2847 yards 17 TD 9 INT, and ran for 769 yards and 9 TD on 6.5 YPC, earning 2nd Team All-Sun Belt. Broadway would go on to throw for 7985 yards and rush for 1936 yards in his career, ranking 15th in Sun Belt history in total yards.
3. 2019 (11-3 overall, 7-1 Sun Belt)
Now we’ve entered the Billy Napier zone. His final 3 years at Louisiana, 2019-21, all show up here, just slightly out of order with the last 2. 2019 Louisiana had a DANGEROUS run game combined with super efficient passing from QB Levi Lewis, and a very good defense as well. Just a 28-38 loss to Mississippi State on the opening day was a sign of things to come. Louisiana beat up on their early schedule, including a 77-6 wipeout of Texas Southern, racking up 748 yards of offense. A 7-17 loss to Appalachian State was the projected Sun Belt title game coming into the year, and gave us an early taste of where the two teams stood. The two had a date with destiny, as Louisiana rolled through the rest of their schedule to finish 10-2 and face #21 11-1 App State in the title game. App took an early 21-0 lead and the Cajuns had to play catch up the whole time, scoring late TDs to make it a 38-45 result. App State was just a team of destiny that year, going 13-1 and finishing #19 in the nation. UL Lafayette still finished how they usually do—with a bowl win, this time over MAC champion Miami (OH).
This 2019 edition was (arguably) better than the top 2 seasons on this list. The offense averaged 37.9 PPG (10th in the nation) and gave up just 19.7 PPG (18th in the nation). Like I said, the run game was stacked. The offensive line consisted of OT Max Mitchell (4th round NFL pick), OG Robert Hunt (2nd round), OG O’Cyrus Torrence (2nd round) and OG Kevin Dotson (4th round). Starting RB Elijah Mitchell (6th round) ran for 1147 yards and 16 TD on 5.8 YPC, backup Raymond Calais (7th round) ran for 886 yards and 6 TD on 7.6 YPC, and 3rd string Trey Ragas ran for 820 yards and 11 TD on 7.1 YPC. Overall, Louisiana ranked 6th in the nation in rushing YPG, and 3rd in YPC. Pretty unstoppable. Levi Lewis was a great QB for the team as well, taking care of the ball and throwing 3050 yards 26 TD 4 INT.
2. 2021 (13-1 overall, 8-0 Sun Belt)
It was getting hard for Louisiana to hold onto Napier, and the 2021 season was the final straw. #23 Louisiana at #21 Texas was one of the more underrated non-conference matchups of the season, with the Longhorns taking it 38-18. Afterwards, Louisiana lived up to their preseason ranking and then some, going on a 13 game win streak that overlapped to next year for a total of 15 games. After losing the conference championship game in 2019 and the game being cancelled in 2020, 3rd time was the charm and UL Lafayette was the sole winner of the 2021 Sun Belt title, beating 10-2 Appalachian State 24-16. Louisiana was never in danger of not making the title game, as the 2nd place team in their division, Texas State, went just 3-5 in the Sun Belt. But the road to the title didn’t come without struggles—close wins were 27-24 over FCS Nicholls State, 20-18 over South Alabama, 28-27 over Arkansas State, 21-17 over Georgia State on a late TD, and 21-16 over rival UL Monroe. Still, they won the title, and won the bowl game to boot, 36-21 over Marshall.
QB Levi Lewis finished his career with a 2917 passing yard 20 TD 4 INT season, totalling 10,291 yards from scrimmage for his career and ranking 10th in Sun Belt history. Lewis also had a record of 34-5(!) over his last 3 years as a starter. A whopping 6 players on offense and 8 on defense were 1st-3rd Team All-Sun Belt. Napier won Sun Belt Coach of the Year for a 2nd time. 4 players from the team have been drafted in the last 2 NFL Drafts, including 2nd round pick OL O’Cyrus Torrence, who transferred to Florida in 2022.
1. 2020 (10-1 overall, 7-1 Sun Belt)
And in the 1 spot, we’ve got 2020 Louisiana. The Ragin’ Cajuns made a statement in week 1, beating #23 Iowa State 31-14 thanks to a 95 yard kick return TD and 83 yard punt return TD. Iowa State would go on to win the Fiesta Bowl and finish #9 in the nation, with their only other 2 losses coming to top 10 teams by a combined 4 points. Louisiana gave Iowa State their toughest test all year. After that came wins over (final records) 6-4 Georgia State and 8-5 Georgia Southern. A 27-30 loss on the final play to Coastal Carolina, who finished 11-1, was Louisiana’s only loss all season. A mid-season win over 6-3 UAB and a last week win against 9-3 Appalachian State built a very good resume. Unfortunately, the Sun Belt title game against Coastal Carolina was cancelled, and we were robbed of a potential classic. Even though Coastal had beaten Louisiana earlier in the year, the two shared the Sun Belt title. A 31-24 win over UTSA in the bowl finished off a 10-1 year, and a #15 finish (9th in my rankings).
Louisiana’s numbers weren’t eye popping—just 33.6 PPG to 22.0 PPG allowed. Only 1 player, RB Elijah Mitchell, made 1st Team All-Sun Belt on offense and defense. Most of Louisiana’s success came from key contributors playing as a team, as they dominated the 2nd/3rd all-conference teams with 6 players on offense and 4 on defense. This was the first season Louisiana was ever ranked by the College Football Playoff Committee, and the first time they had beaten Appalachian State (0-8 previously). Chris Smith was an All-American kick returner, averaging 26.8 yards per return with 2 TD.

Kansas survived to be 96th, only the 3rd worst Power 5 team. 2007 and 1995 carried them hard—if you remove those 2 years, Kansas would’ve been 110th on this list. Kansas is one of the oldest programs in the country, having fielded their first football team in 1890, and their glory years were 1890-1952, posting 4 unbeaten seasons and a .603 winning percentage. It wasn’t until 2012 when the program’s all-time win percentage fell below .500 for the first time since their inaugural 1890 season, where they went 1-2. Former legendary program members include Fielding Yost, John Outland (Outland Award), and even legendary basketball coach Phog Allen, who served the 1920 season as head coach. Phog went 590-219 as KU’s basketball coach from 1919-1956, and went 5-2-1 as the football coach.

2010-2021 make up 12 of the 16 worst seasons, to illustrate just how bad Kansas has been recently. They had a 23-118 record over that span, and just a 7-99 record in the Big 12! 2 of those against Texas. Despite being so bad for stretches of time, they had solid runs under Glen Mason (1988-96) and Mark Mangino (2002-09), with each of Kansas’ top 8 seasons falling under one of the two coaches. With 45 players drafted, Kansas has managed to produce about 1 NFL player a year, including 5x Pro Bowler Aqib Talib and 4x Pro Bowler Chris Harris Jr.. Talib is also Kansas’ only Consensus All-American with his 2007 season.

Top 5 Seasons

Worst Season: 2015 (0-12 overall, 0-9 Big 12)
Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the worst Kansas team of them all? 2015 isn’t just the worst Kansas team—it’s the 25th worst season by anyone in the last 40 years! New coach David Beaty took over the mess Charlie Weis left, but instead of cleaning it up, lit it on fire. A season-opening 38-41 loss to South Dakota State was bad. A 23-55 loss to Memphis next week was arguably worse. A battle against Iowa State came 2 weeks later to essentially determine who’d finish last in the conference, and Kansas lost that 13-38. The lowest might’ve not even come until the next week, when they lost 7-66 to #3 Baylor. Losses the rest of the year included 10-58 to #14 Oklahoma State, 7-62 to #14 Oklahoma, 20-59 to Texas, 0-49 to West Virginia, and 14-45 to West Virginia. Surprisingly they only lost 17-23 to TCU, who finished #7. On the year, Kansas averaged just 15.2 PPG while giving up 46.1 PPG. DB Fish Smithson was really the only quality player on the team, earning 2nd Team All-Big 12 honors with 111 tackles and 2 INTs. Beaty would go just 6-42 in his 4 years as head coach.
5. 2005 (7-5 overall, 3-5 Big 12)
Mark Mangino was feeling the heat, having gone just 12-24 in his first 3 years. 2005 marked a major turning point for Kansas football at the time. A 3-0 start soon turned into 3-4 with 4 straight losses to Big 12 opponents, and the season was slipping. That’s when things changed. A 13-3 over 5-2 Missouri in the Border War improved their record to 4-4. That’s when Kansas scored a HUGE 40-15 win over Nebraska, their first win over the Huskers since 1969, ending a 37 game losing streak in the series, the second-longest streak of consecutive losses to one team in NCAA history. After losing to #2 Texas, Kansas’ final game determined if they would make a bowl or not. A 34 yard FG in OT clinched a 24-21 win over Iowa State to send Kansas to the Forth Worth Bowl, where they dismantled Houston 42-13. RB Jon Cornish led the team in rushing with 780 yards and 9 TD on 5.8 YPC, and would go on to run for 1457 yards in 2006. Cornish, born in Canada, would go on to have a Hall of Fame CFL career and the Jon Cornish Trophy was established in 2018 for the top Canadian player in D1 football.
4. 1992 (8-4 overall, 4-3 Big 8)
Let’s go allll the way back to 1992 when it was just the Big 8 with no Texas teams. Kansas raced out to a 7-1 start and a #13 ranking, with a 4-0 Big 8 record. They looked to challenge #7 Nebraska and #8 Colorado for the title that year. At the time, they’d continue their long losing streak against Nebraska in a 7-49 loss, and then followed up with an 18-25 loss to Colorado. An upset loss to 2-8 rival Missouri the next week just rubbed salt in the wound for what originally appeared to be a promising season. They managed to claim a 23-20 win over #25 BYU in the bowl, however, to finish #25 in my rankings. This team had a great stable of RBs; starter Maurice Douglas going for 1000+ yards from scrimmage and the 2 backups adding 600+ each. QB Chip Hilleary added 537 rushing yards and 6 TD himself to go with his 1583 passing yards 12 TD 11 INT. Overall, the offense ranked 10th in the nation with 31.1 PPG and the defense was solid as well with 21.8 PPG allowed. The defense turned out to be loaded with talent as 2 players went on to win Super Bowls, 2 other players played 9 seasons in the NFL, another played 7, and DT Dana Stubblefield was the 1997 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
3. 2008 (8-5 overall, 4-4 Big 12)
It was a down year after 2007, but the offense was still very good led by QB Todd Reesing. Reesing, the best QB in school history, completed 67% of throws for 3888 yards 32 TD 13 INT. If not for a Big 12 loaded with QBs (Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, Graham Harrell, RGIII, and more), Reesing would’ve been 1st/2nd all-conference in almost any other league. WR Dezmon Briscoe put up 97 catches for 1405 yards and 8 TD. Converted QB → WR Kerry Meier was a great possession receiver, adding 99 catches for 1045 yards and 8 TD. Briscoe would go for 1337 yards the next year and Meier followed up with 102 catches for 985 yards. Meier was a particularly interesting player. Recruited to play QB, he started in 2006, completing 57% for 1193 yards 13 TD 10 INT as a freshman, but after Reesing took over in 2007, Meier was athletic enough to make the switch to wideout. As a 6’2 224 lb possession receiver, he wasn’t exceptionally fast, but had great hands despite playing without gloves, and played well enough to be a 5th round NFL selection in 2010 by the Atlanta Falcons. For the season, Kansas’ most notable win was 40-37 over #12 Missouri on the final week. Reesing threw a 26 yard TD to Meier with 27 seconds to go to get revenge for 2007. Kansas was a solid team in 2008, but ultimately was dominated by the top dogs (Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech).
2. 1995 (10-2 overall, 5-2 Big 8)
The final year in the Big 8, and Glen Mason’s final year before going to Minnesota. What a wild season. Kansas finished #9 in the nation, and 4 teams from the Big 8 (half the conference!) finished in the top 10. After starting 4-0, #24 Kansas headed to #4 Colorado. Kansas pulled off the 40-24 upset thanks to 2 TDs from RB June Henley. After a dominant victory over Iowa State, #7 Kansas headed to Norman to play #15 Oklahoma, winning 38-17 in a statement game. Kansas was for real. That set up #6 Kansas @ #14 Kansas State, the only time in the rivalry’s 100+ year history that both teams were ranked entering the game. Kansas State had their best performance of the season, winning 41-7, and Kansas would fall to #11. After a win over Missouri, #10 Kansas hosted #1 Nebraska, whose 1995 team is regarded as one of the best in NCAA history. The Huskers showed why, winning 41-3 in Kansas’ 2nd blowout loss. The Jayhawks finished with honor, beating Oklahoma State then UCLA 51-30 in the bowl to finish 10-2 and #9 (13th in my rankings). Kansas had 7 NFL players drafted over the next 2 years, so it wasn’t a fluke—this team was talented.
1. 2007 (12-1 overall, 7-1 Big 12)
Is there any other team with a top season as obvious as Kansas’s? The 2007 Jayhawks boat raced their schedule to a 11-0 start and #2 ranking, and finished with a BCS Bowl win over #5 Virginia Tech. They played a weaker schedule than most, but were 2nd in the nation in scoring with 42.8 PPG and 4th in points allowed with 16.4 PPG. Kansas was a legit team who could’ve beaten Ohio State/LSU in the national title game had they made it. Wins included 76-39 over Nebraska, 30-24 over #24 Kansas State, and 24-21 over #5 Virginia Tech. Plus 6 other wins by 30+ points. Kansas’ 11-0 start set up the biggest Border War in history between #2 Kansas and #3 Missouri. Unfortunately Missouri would take it 36-28, taking an early 21-0 lead and fending off Kansas’ comeback attempt.
QB Todd Reesing threw for 3486 yards 33 TD 7 INT, earning 2nd Team All-Big 12. RB Brandon McAnderson joined him with 1125 rushing yards and 16 TD on 5.9 YPC, and same for WR Marcus Henry with 1000+ receiving yards and 10 TD on 18.8 yards per catch. Backup RB Jake Sharp had a fine season with 821 rushing yards and 7 TD himself. TE Derek Fine was a 4th round NFL selection after the season. OL Anthony Collins was 1st Team All-American and a 4th round selection. 5 players on defense had 10+ total TFL. CB Aqib Talib was a Consensus All-American with 5 INT for 195 yards and 2 TD. DT James McClinton was the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year with 2.5 sacks and 8.5 TFL. LB Joe Mortensen was also 1st Team All-Big 12 with 106 tackles, 3 sacks, and 12 TFL. Justin Thornton was a 6’5 228 lb DB who registered 5 INT. Kick returner Marcus Herford was the Big 12 Special Teams POTY, averaging 28.6 yards per kick return and 2 TD. Mark Mangino was the Consensus National Coach of the Year.

Overview:
This team had a season that could be described as a downward slope. Expectations were pretty high coming into the season. The season definitely didn’t go as planned with Reich being fired midseason and a whole bunch of QB issues. The team definitely came into the offseason needing some change and most importantly, a QB.
The team had a ton of changes with coaching after Reich's firing and the new regime change of coaching coming in. The Colts added nine coaches and lost nine (from what I can find).
New coaching staff hires:
Shane Steichen(Head Coach) -He is someone I am sure a majority of y’all are familiar with. He played QB at UNLV in college and got his first coaching job as an assistant there. After a one-year stint as an assistant at Louisville, he became an assistant for the Chargers ( and for one year with the Browns, splitting up his stints with the Chargers). He then grew to become the Chargers QB coach, and later on interim OC and the OC. For the last two years, he has been the Eagles' OC. Steichen seems to be a guy who can help turn around the Colts' offenses Woes.
Brian Mason (Special Teams ) -A two-year player at Denson, before an injury forced him to be an assistant. He coached and was an assistant at many schools: Bluffton, Kent State, Purdue, and Ohio State. He after many years of being an assistant took over as Cincinattis's director of recruiting and then their special teams coordinator. He spent last as Notre Dame's special teams coordinator. He seems to be a young guy with a lot of potential
TJ Ingles (Assistant to the HC)- A coach who is a little more obscure and hard to find information about. He was a graduate assistant for Wisconsin for 4 years, and after that, he interned for 2 years working with equipment for the 49ers. He then became an assistant at North Carolina and after one year became the Director of Football Operations and has since held that post at Pittsburgh and Wisconsin.
Jim Bob Cooter(Offensive coordinator)-First off, an A+ name. A backup QB at Tennessee, he later became an assistant there. He then went to be with the Colts, as an assistant but left after a few years to become an assistant with the Chiefs, then Broncos. He became the Lion's QB and eventually their OC, but his contract was not renewed. He moved on to being the Jets RB coach, and then an Eagles consultant. He spent last season with the Jags. Let's see if part two as a Colt OC can go better than the first try.
Cam Turner(Quarterbacks) -A former QB and WR at the Citadel he moved on to become their WR and ST coach straight out of college. He then got the role of assistant to the HC for the Vikings, but after two years of that, he went to coach for his dad as the QB and WR coach at FIU. He then went back to the NFL becoming the Panthers assistant WR and then QB coach. He then followed Steve Wicks to Arizona to be an assistant. The next year Kingsbury was promoted to assistant QBs coach, then QBs coach, and lastly QBs and pass game coordinator. He comes from a Football family with his dad, Ron Turner, being a formal FIU HC, the nephew of Norv Turner, a legendary OC, and cousin of, Scott Turner, the former Commanders OC.
DeAndre Smith*( Running Backs) - A formal QB at Missouri State, he after collage became the OC at Indiana State. After that gig, he began a long run of being an RB coach, where he has coached RBs at Northern Illinois, Miami(OH), New Mexico,UNLV, Illinois, Syracuse, Purdue, North Carolina,Utah State, Texas Tech, and lastly his first NFL gig with the Giants. He is definitely bringing a ton of experience to the Colts.
Tom Manning(Tight Ends ) -The first coach to have not played in college. His first division one job was as an assistant at Toledo. He later became an offensive line coach at Mount Union and Toledo. He then got the job of OC of Iowa State and then the role of TE coach at the Colts, but only for one year. He then went back to Iowa State. He is now back with the Colts and let's hope his second stint is longer and more fruitful than his first.
Tony Sparano Jr*(Offensive Line)-* Son of Formal NFL head coach, Tony Sparano. He played college football as a DE at Albany. He then after college became an assistant at the Dolphins and Jets. He then became the Bills TE coach, before becoming assistant OL coach for the Jags, panthers, and Giants. Lets hope he can return the OL to their formal greatness.
Chris Watt*( Assistant Offensive Line)-* The only formal NFL player. He played college football as an OG at Notre Dame and was drafted in the third round by the Chargers. He never really made it in the NFL due to injuries, so in 2019, he became an assistant at ND. He then became the OL coach for Tulane and after that, he went back to ND to become the assistant OL coach. He was well known for being loved as a teammate so, he should bring that positive atmosphere to the Colts.

K Matt Gay - The Colts spend decently big to get a reliable and consistent kicker, who has formal pro-bowl honers.
Edge Samson Ebukam-A former 4th round pick out of Eastern Washington,he has 22 career sacks and 224 tackles in the NFL.The colts will look for him to improve their pass-rush defensive line overall.
WR Isiah Mckenzie- Someone who I believe people are underestimating how big his role will be.A former 5th-round pick out of Georgia he has 141 catches and 16 NFL touchdowns, he can also return very well.
QB Garnder Minshew- a 6th-round pick out of Washington state, has played in 32 games and started 24. He has 44 career TDs and 15 ints plus 6,632 yards.he will aim to compete for the starting job.

Now that we’ve addressed the offseason, the state of the team, and coaching changes, it’s time to look at the picks:
1.4 Quarterback Anthony Richardson*,* Florida
Born in Miami and growing Up in Gainesville he was a 4-star recruit with many offers. He has a fantastic build at 6'4 and 244LB. His college career got off to a fun start with in his Freshman year he only appeared to throw one TD and one INT in his two passing attempts. During his sophomore year, he found more success getting to be the backup to Emory Jones and attempting 64 passes for 6tds and 5ints. His junior yealast year he had a much better season winning the starting job and throwing 17tds though also throwing 9 picks, but he also picked up 9 rushing TDs.Richardson, as most of you know, is beloved for his athleticism. He ran a 4.43s 40, 40.5in vertical, and 10’9ft broad; this helps make him the most athletic QB ever. He will compete for the starting job against Minshew and will project to be a long starter if he pans out.
2.44 Corner Back Julies Brents, Kansas State
As a kid, he was born in raised in the local Indy area. Brents came out of High school as a three-star safety. Brents spent three years at Iowa at first experiencing only playing time in of those years and overall struggling. He then transferred to Kansas State where he saw immediate succession raking up recording 94 tackles and 5ints over two tears plus getting all-big 12 honors last year. The best things about Brent are his elite size and his physicality, now downside does come from his age and how many penalties he gets. He was needed to add to replace Stephen Gilmore after his trade from the team and should walk into a very good case to start.
3.79 WR Josh Downs North Carolina
He grew up in Suwanee Georgia and was a 4-star recruit coming out with a boatload of offers after being declared an all-American. Downs his freshman year only caught 7 passes but he was able to turn that into 3 TDs.His sophomore year was his best year for catches and yards with 1,335 yards and 101 receptions through his senior year he had the most TDs with 11. He was a two time All-Acc.Downs has elite speed, agility, and explosion though isn't the biggest size-wise. He projects to likely be a starter with his only real competition with Isiah Mckenzie. He was much-needed addition after Campbell left and the Strachan experiment failed.
4.106 OT Blake Freeland, BYU
Born in a suburb of Salt Lake City, he was a three-star coming out of high school. He started a significant amount of games in his freshman and sophomore years and grew into a full-time starter in his junior and senior years. He was a third-team all-American last year. He is a fantastic athlete with a massive build who can struggle against elite pass rushers.He will be a more developmental player fighting against Reiman and Fries for a job.

Born in Kansas City he grew up to be a three-star recruit. For the first two years of his career, he started off in a very limited role but broke out in his junior year. He had 74 tackles over his last two years and 9.5 sacks.His size is fantastic and I wanna quote TFG on his athleticism”His athletic testing forces a human being to question if aliens exist; it shouldn't be possible to move like he does at 282 pounds”.He projects to start off as a key rotational player who can grow into a bigger role over time.
4.141 CB Darius Rush, South Carolina
From South Carolina, he attended South Carolina as a 3-star recruit as a WR. In the first two years of his career, he established minor playing success with little playing time due to changing from being a WR to a DB. It was not until his sophomore year that he broke out, as over his last two years he had 64 tackles, 3 interceptions, and a forced fumble. He had success in the senior bowl that helped his stock and his speed and size are elite. He does need to improve his tackling though.He projects to likely be a backup with limited playing time on Special times and occasionally rotational playing time.
5.158 S Daniel Scott, Cal
From Pasadena, as a 3-star recruit, he committed to Cal. For his freshman season, he got very little playing time, but he bounced back in years 2 and 3 getting more playing time though not starting.In the last two years, he has started and achieved 167 tackles plus 6 ints and 1 TD. He is an older player but, will bring a good athletic profile to the team and is a very good tackler.He likely will start on ST as he was the ST player of the year for Cal in the past and he will hopefully develop into a player the team can eventually start.
5.162 TE Will Mallory*,* Miami
As a four-star out of Jacksonville, he had a ton of offers but decided to attend Miami. He started his years off with two less productive years where he didn't get a ton of playing time but still produced some. For the last three years slowly produced more and more, year by year and by the end got 14tds and 1,544 overall.He as a prospect has a great size and is hard to tackle, but needs to improve his blocking and catch rate.He will definitely have to compete for a job with three other very caple TEs on the team all gunning for a spot.
5.176 RB Evan Hull*,* Northwestern
Coming out of Minessota he decided to attend Northwestern as a three-star recruit. Hull for the first two years was a rotational back, but for his junior and senior years, he achieved success as a starter. Hull had 2,417 rushing yards in total and 18 rushings touchdowns, but where he really stood out was in receiving.He had 861 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns as an RB.He has elite speed and explosion and has great receiving ability, he does struggle with blocking and changing direction though.He is in a way a Hines replacement and will likely make the team to be a RB that helps in the passing game also.
6.211 DE Titus Leo*,* Wagner
From Brooklyn, New York he was a nonstarred recruit who committed to FCS Wagner which is his only division one offer. For his freshman year, he barely played but for the next four years, he played a very important role in his team. Over his career, he had 234 tackles, 13 sacks, and six forced fumbles. He was three-time all-NEA, 1 time NEA defensive player of the year, and 1 time FCS all-American. Leo has great athleticism that allows him to hopefully develop into an NFL-level player, he also possesses the versatility to play both edge and linebacker. He will likely be a special teams player who gets limited reps at either edge or linebacker and overtime can develop into at least rotational quality.
7.221 CB Jaylon Jones*,* Texas A&M
From the San Antonio area, he was an All-American and five-star recruit out of high school. Jones started almost all three years in college totaling 98 tackles and 3 interceptions. As is a trend with the Colts Jones is a fantastic athlete who also poses fantastic IQ.His biggest weakness is he is not great at either press or man but can play both semi-comfortably. While it is hard to see him making the roster with 3 other DBs drafted Jones is a great athlete, who was frankly a downright steal at this spot.I see the team trying as hard as they can to find a way for him to make the roster and contribute on ST his first year and eventually develop into a rotational and maybe even a starter.
7.236 OT Jake Witt*,* Northern Michigan
What a fun player. He came out of bumfuck nowhere in Michigan's UP, he played for an 8 man football team as a WR and was a standout at basketball. He originally committed to Michigan Tech for basketball but after one year he decided to change majors and schools. He originally didn't play sports but after one year decided to play sports and again and joined the football team as a TE. In the middle of the season the team during halftime needed more OL due to injuries so he was shoved into the position and was an immediate success. He continued the last year of his season at OL and in the offseason gained weight. Witt is known for his massive size and potential though he is still fairly new to the offensive line. Overall the team's OL depth is murky so he should have a good shot at making the team, but at least he should make the practice squad due to his high potential.

A former HS all-American and All-SEC player from Indiana who is a good athlete with certain technique issues who with OL depth very much needed has a decent shot at the roster.
Donovan Mutin, WR, Houston
A three-star recruit from Texas who was a three-time captain for Houston.A player who, while he isn't the best athlete ever, is a decent player who can push for special teams to play.
Other UDFAs with limited impact projections are Darius Hagans*(Rb),* Liam Anderon(LB), and Caleb Simpson(DT).
Summary:
I feel like this draft continued our love for High RAS and freaky potential players. The team definitely helped fell in needs that had to be addressed by the team at some point soon. Overall, the team definitely looked toward the future with the draft.I can definitely see the team walking away with multiple good starters from this draft and most hopefully a future franchise QB. Lastly, the Colts arguably had one of the top three best draft of the NFL this season and these in my opinion will be looked back on extremely well.

The first year I got into football was 2009, the year Western Kentucky joined the FBS as a full-time member. Back then, time moved slower, and it seemed like Western Kentucky was the worst team to ever play football. After all, they were 4-32 from 2008-10, and I had no other impression of them. WKU surpassed all my expectations from then on, going 94-53 since 2011 and becoming a perennial bowl team.

The move from FCS to FBS has been nothing short of a success for WKU. 9 bowl appearances in 14 eligible seasons, along with a 6-3 record in those games. QBs, RBs, and WRs that have been atop the NCAA leaderboards statistically. They’ve even been a bit of a TE factory with NFL veterans Tyler Higbee and Jack Doyle. And they’ve definitely been a QB factory, with Brandon Doughty, Mike White, and Bailey Zappe all getting drafted in the last 7 years.

Top 5 Seasons

Worst Season: 2009 (0-12 overall, 0-8 Sun Belt)
They were young—this team wasn’t completely devoid of talent. After a 7-63 opening loss to Tennessee, they were much more competitive by the end, losing 3 straight one-possession games to Sun Belt opponents. The defense was porous (119th in PPG allowed) and the offense wasn’t much better (104th in PPG), but they had a few players that would turn into something. RB Bobby Rainey ran for 939 yards and 6 TD on 6.5 YPC, but would rush for 1649 yards in 2010 and 1695 yards in 2011, winning Sun Belt POTY in 2010. TE Jack Doyle was 2nd on the team in receptions/receiving yards with 37 and 365, and would go on to play in the NFL from 2013-2021, making 2 Pro Bowls. Freshman QB Kawaun Jakes ended up being a 4-year starter and in his career, threw for 7538 yards 51 TD 38 INT and ran for 785 yards 14 TD.
5. 2022 (9-5 overall, 6-2 Conference USA)
2022 WKU had a Bailey Zappe-sized hole to fill at QB, which translated from college football terms, means about as big as you can get. Lucky for them, they got Austin Reed in the transfer portal. At Division II West Florida, Reed had led the Argonauts to the 2019 D2 title, and combined for 78 TD passes to just 20 INT in 2019/2021. He’d transition to the FBS level extremely well, throwing for 4746 yards 40 TD 11 INT in his first year with the Hilltoppers, winning C-USA Newcomer of the Year. WKU played well all year, finishing 3rd in C-USA, but they saved their best for last, going up 41-10 against 10-2 South Alabama in the bowl before winning 44-23. Reed was nearly flawless, throwing for 497 yards 4 TD 1 INT. Reed also looked good against the two P5 teams WKU played (Indiana and Auburn), combining for 618 passing yards 4 TD 3 INT.
4. 2019 (9-4 overall, 6-2 Conference USA)
Whereas 2022 Western Kentucky was all about offensive firepower, 2019 went heavy on the defense, ranking 22nd in the country giving up just 20.1 PPG. It was NOT a good start, losing 28-35 to Central Arkansas, but WKU would rebound to be a respectable 5-4 toward the end of the year. That’s when one of the best revenge stories of the season occurred. QB Ty Storey, who was at Arkansas for 4 years before transferring to Western Kentucky in 2019, returned to Fayetteville to try and exact revenge on coach Chad Morris. The details are murky, but Storey started a few games in 2018 but it appeared that Morris didn’t care for him as a starter all that much. On his return, Storey announced himself as the Chad Morris slayer, accounting for 290 yards of total offense and 3 TD in a 45-19 win. Morris was fired shortly after. As for Storey and WKU, they drove off into the sunset, winning their last 2 regular season games and bowl game to finish 9-4, and #42 in my rankings. DL DeAngelo Malone won C-USA DPOTY with 99 tackles 11 sacks 9.5 TFL. Tyson Helton won C-USA Coach of the Year.
3. 2021 (9-5 overall, 7-1 Conference USA)
What a year for Houston Bapti-I mean, Western Kentucky. QB Bailey Zappe, WR Jerreth Sterns, and offensive coordinator Zach Kittley all had great years for FCS Houston Baptist in 2020, and decided to join Western Kentucky for 2021. Zappe set an NCAA record for TDs in a season, throwing for 5967 yards 62 TD 11 INT!!! Sterns led the nation in all 3 receiving categories with 150 catches for 1902 yards and 17 TD! Kittley won 247Sports’ Offensive Coordinator of the Year, transforming WKU’s offense from 115th in PPG the previous year to 2nd in 2021. The offense was historic, even #2 WR Mitchell Tinsley had 87 catches for 1402 yards and 14 TD. I gotta give some credit to the big boys up front too: Offensive linemen Cole Spencer, Mason Brooks, Quantavious Leslie, and Boe Wilson all made the All-CUSA Team. Zappe won C-USA POTY, and DL DeAngelo Malone won his 2nd C-USA DPOTY award to go with his 2019 one. Malone and Zappe were drafted in the 3rd and 4th rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft after the year.
2. 2016 (11-3 overall, 7-1 Conference USA)
The two seasons left are Jeff Brohm’s final 2 years at WKU: 2015 and 2016. Narrowly finishing as the 2nd best season is 2016, where Western Kentucky finished #15 in my rankings. If there’s one thing Brohm knows, it’s offense. WKU ranked 1st in the nation with 45.5 PPG. This team was LOADED with offensive talent. QB Mike White completed 67% for 4363 yards 37 TD 7 INT. RB Anthony Wales ran for 1621 yards and 27 TD on 6.8 YPC. WR1 Taywan Taylor caught 98 balls for 1730 yards and 17 TD. WR2 Nicholas Morris added 76 catches for 1318 yards and 14 TD. 3 offensive linemen made 1st/2nd Team All-CUSA. Taylor and Norris are #1/#2 in school career receiving yards. Wales is #1 in school career total TD. White is #2 in career passing yards and TD. Lots of legends on this team. They finished top 15 for me because of forgivable losses (#1 Alabama, Vanderbilt in OT, Louisiana Tech which they avenged later), blowout wins (59-24 over 10-3 Old Dominion, 52-3 over FAU, 45-7 over North Texas, 60-6 over Marshall), and beating 4 other bowl teams (Miami (OH), Middle Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Memphis). Western Kentucky won their 2nd straight Conference USA title, and Brohm left for Purdue after the season.
1. 2015 (12-2 overall, 8-0 Conference USA)
Brandon Doughty walked so Mike White and Bailey Zappe could run. QB Doughty arrived in 2011 to a team that was just 4-32 the 3 years prior. Doughty bided his time before getting a starting opportunity in 2013, throwing 14 TD 14 INT, then elevating to another level in 2014 with 49 TD 10 INT, winning C-USA POTY. In 2015, his senior year, he’d take it even further, completing 72% for 5055 yards 48 TD 9 INT on 9.4 YPA, winning his 2nd straight C-USA POTY Award. WKU started the year by outlasting Vanderbilt 14-12, and that would be the worst game they’d play all year offensively. After a 41-38 win over Louisiana Tech in their second game, Western Kentucky destroyed any C-USA opponent that stood in their way for the rest of the season, the smallest margin of victory being just 16 points. The 2 losses were 35-38 to Indiana and 20-48 to #5 LSU. WKU played well in both games, racking up 568 yards of offense against Indiana and 428 against LSU. Southern Miss would put up a good fight in the C-USA Title Game, going up 28-21 in the 3rd, but WKU would score the last 24 to win it 45-28. A 45-35 shootout win in the bowl against Quinton Flowers, Marlon Mack, and South Florida ended the year with a 12-2 record, a Conference USA title, and a #24 AP Ranking. 5 players were drafted into the NFL from this team over the next 2 years, including Doughty and Super Bowl champion TE Tyler Higbee.
