53 – Illusionistic Self-harm

Darkness cleared, and vision slowly returned. There was a magical density to the air, on this side of the portal, that was missing in the real world. Its taste was, just like on the other side, similar and yet different from the magic the surrounded Tryte. If Albert had to guess, this was an astral event of some sort, but it was not connected to whatever dimension the Lithoids inhabited.
What this meant in the grand scheme of things remained to be seen.

[Reach the core at the center of the maze to seize control of the dungeon.]
Seize control? This was interesting, because it implied that perhaps there was no need to destroy the core when he reached it. What if he could somehow steal the core of this place and use it to increase the power of the yet-to-be-deployed Quadrangle core? Wouldn’t that be awesome?
Also he needed to come up with a better name for the Quadrangle core because there was no universe where he wanted his new base to be shaped like a lopsided square.
In any case. All this required him to reach the core of this dungeon, which meant that the first thing Albert needed to do was to get his bearings. True to its name, the dungeon was utterly confusing. Albert wasn’t sure what a warpspace was supposed to be, but by simply looking around he was kind of getting the idea.
No matter which senses he tried to enhance with the use of his skills, the place refused to give up its secrets when under scrutiny. It was like looking at a kaleidoscope, every time showing a different facet of itself, ever-changing in fractal patterns that pretended to repeat themselves but were never quite the same. There were stairs here and there, but sometimes they led to walls and at other times they hung upside-down from the ceiling.
Like an Escher space, with walls that were not solid but made of translucent crystal. Sometimes reflecting and sometimes refracting the light that hit them, at times see-through and at other times mirrors on which Albert could see a twisted image of himself.
The air was dry, sharp like the small crystalline protrusions that jutted out of the angular surfaces at all places. Every breath was like breathing in small razors, painful and tiring. The high mana density was somewhat soothing, but it also added to the heaviness of the place.
Every little discomfort was amplified tenfold. Albert was at the same time thirsty and jet-lagged, his legs ached and his stomach was upset, and his head swam under the assault of so much light and confusing images. His visual cortex just wasn’t equipped to see what he was seeing, much less to make it make sense.
Nothing moved. Or rather, in a place where everything appeared to be moving with every little movement of the eyes, everything felt as stationary as it could be. When standing perfectly still, Albert was like frozen in a photograph of a corrupted file on a computer, looking at shards of reality and fragments of matter that didn’t belong neither in the real world nor in the oniric dreamscape of a nightmare.
After exhausting the suite of skills he could use to map the place, even if just a little, Albert decided to start exploring. He moved cautiously, careful not to slip on the shiny crystal surfaces and not to stumble upon any hard, yet concealed, edges. As he moved, his mental teleportation map slowly but surely gathered the data from his senses and organized it in a little model of the dungeon.
It showed as a place totally disconnected from the rest of the world. On a whim, Albert decided to try and see if he could teleport out.
[Location unavailable. Leave the dungeon in order to be able to access normal space.]
Leave… and how do I leave?
[By destroying the core.]
Oh, okay. Thank you system.
No response.
There were times when the stillness of a place made you think about all sorts of thoughts. Unrelated to each other, at a first glance, yet very much connected in ways that were not readily grasped by the conscious mind. Albert’s mind wandered here and there, touching upon many things he experienced in the last few days.
The place around him resonated with his thoughts. And when he eventually found himself thinking about that fateful encounter in the sewers, where he had been forced with his back against a wall, that’s when the peace of the dungeon was shattered.
The crystals felt hostile. Turning red, one after the other, vibrating in a discordant tune that pierced the ears. The air felt sharper than ever, and it was difficult to breathe as the small corridor shifted and moved about, with its walls melting and reforming in ever sharper and longer shards of crystal that encroached and threatened.
Albert found himself gasping for air. He punched the walls with his skill cranked up to max, but all that happened was that his fists hurt, and his knuckles bled. He heaved, struggling to breathe, and kicked and spasmed as the space closed around him.
He was being entombed alive. Struggling. He was not going to be trapped here.
The memory of him gutting PsyOps alive played itself over and over in his mind.
The walls encroached closer. Now his arms were almost trapped, forced in barely a few inches of space around his body, twisted in uncomfortable positions.
His legs too. His toes hurt from a kick to a particularly sharp bit of crystal, and the growths got closer and closer. Already he could feel the cold tips of the crystals poke him.
His limbs ached. All that was in his mind, alongside the sensation of warm blood on his skin, was the aching and struggle of wanting to move but being unable to.
Was the blood his, or was it a memory of when his arm was plunged deep in the warm flesh of the person he killed.
And he got away with it. With killing.
He needed to move.
He couldn’t not move.
He had to.
But the crystals pushed on him with their inevitability.
Breathe. Breathe.
He closed his eyes.
Recognize thought as thought. And let it go.
His mind slowly responded to his will. Even his will being one of the many thoughts arising in his consciousness. He remembered the meditations, he remembered what Other-Albert always liked to ramble about in the skill videos.
And let it all go.
The pressure eased. Replaced by a cold absence.
Albert opened his eyes, and the walls were back where they belonged.
[Mental Fortress skill level up!]
· I-II-III-IV: increased resistance to mind attacks and altered mental states.
· V: You can recognize illusions and attempts of mental manipulation, and dispel them.
Activating his healing skill to mend his bleeding legs, Albert continued on. Now with a much clearer mind, he could somewhat see beyond the illusions that were assaulting his mind. The walls were moving, yes, but not as much as before.
Even his wounds felt wrong. Like he was making them up in his head, like they were not actually there. One second they hurt and bled, the next they were only a faint memory.
Then he got an idea. A genius idea. His phone, which he had enchanted in order to practice his skill in his free time, his phone was an inanimate object and not a person. It didn’t have a mind. It was immune to illusions.
He whipped it out, turned on the camera, and looked at the screen. What he saw there was a mundane – compared to the dizzying space that his eyes were sure they were seeing – and normal crystal cave. Everywhere there were only crystals, but that was it. Sharp, dangerous but otherwise inert crystals.
Which confirms the theory that what I see is mostly an illusion. I wonder if I can use Perception to look past it?
What followed was a short session of tried-and-true scientific trial and error. Albert activated [Perception], tuned to perceive all except for entropy (a facet of the skill he still needed to work on but was procrastinating due to its dangerous nature).
He looked at the world, then at the image in his phone. And he didn’t stop until what he saw with his eyes, and what the camera of his phone saw were one and the same thing. Every time tweaking the flow of mana, committing every little detail to memory.
He was a bit angry at himself for having wasted his daily use of analysis mode on Singaporean Chinese but there was no way he could have known.
Then, after longer than Albert was willing to admit, everything clicked.

Clearing a whole dungeon while only being able to see through the small screen of a phone was not a smart idea, after all. Which proved to be a good intuition, because a mere hundred meters away from where Albert was, lied in wait the first real enemy of this dungeon.

Hi everyone,
We moved into our log home in central Sweden last July. It’s originally an old barn built in the 19th century which was very early on converted into a home, and then extended a few times in later years.
Whilst it is insulated (to on extent) it has not been done very well or thick enough. Mineral wool quilt (not battens) in the walls and the sloping ceiling, which is sagging, and has become a home for mice and squirrels and insects over the years.
I am renovating each room , starting with the bedroom. After taking down the plasterboard it revealed a bit of a horror show, so much mouse poop, dead insects (including carpet beetle and moth casings), and the pièce de résistance, a dismembered squirrel leg next to what I assumed was a big pile of squirrel poop!
The wall construction is 100 x 50mm (4” x 2”) studwork (approx) which stands free of the external (log) wall, with an air gap differing in depth from 20 - 50mm (1” - 2”). It’s a room in roof construction with ventilation at the eaves, which has some degrees of metal mesh over the outside although I would guess, not enough (given the grisly remains of the squirrel).
Clearly the house is not pest proof. I think it’s unlikely I will be able to keep mice out full stop due to the location (right in the middle of the woods) and the build type (old log cabin on suspended stone foundation) but since I will be spending a lot of money on insulation (I’m thinking either 100mm EPS or PIR between studs then a 40mm layer across the face of the studs, before the plasterboard, filling gaps with expanding foam) I would like to try and keep them out of the insulation.
Any ideas on how to achieve this? One plan I have is to wrap the outside of the studs (e.g. the face towards the log walls) with some sort of fine stainless steel or galvanised mesh). Another idea would be to literally clad the outside face of the stud work in 9mm ply or similar. Aside from that I’m not sure. Obviously I will try and make the outside of the house as mouse proof as possible but I don’t think that is 100% possible.

So, I bought a couple manga from the official kobo store and they are all paged right to left (as they should be) However, I want to sideload a couple other manga I have in .cbz format, but every time I put them on my kobo they are all left to right. Is there a way to change the page order to right to left somehow?
I have tried converting them to epub and azw3 in calibre, set it to right to left in comic source option, and even tried setting a meta -tag copied from one of the posts on reddit I have found, however, no luck. Besides, when I load these epub files to the kobo, they're small.

I'm trying to convert a png image from 16 bits depth to 32, when I try to do it it seems to work, but when I save the file and re-open it, it becomes 16 bits deep again. Does someone know how to fix it?
Notes: I converted it from jpg to png, and if I try to convert it to 8 bits depth it works just fine

Hello! I do not have a lot of knowledge when it comes to crypto, but was wondering if there is anything I should be doing with my Shib right now besides holding.
Right now I have my Shib tucked away right now in my wallet, but I saw some posts about converting/buying Bone, staking, burying, etc.

2023.04.01 14:54 LowerDeckBoy glTF 2.0 matrices fail upon drawing with DirectX 12

I've worked on DirectX 11 glTF models loading some time ago. Now I've attemped to transit to DirectX 12 and I've encountered issue while trying to render glTF models.
Even though model data is loaded corretly (I've compared results with the same model in DX11 working solution) - meaning all vertices, indices and matrices are as they should be - rendered models looks like the one above.
Results are constantly wrong despite any attempts to find the issue.
using cgltf loader
Matrix is gathered as showed above, then node matrix is multiplied by parent matrix and passed to mesh/children nodes.
Same solution works for me in DirectX 11 (but with tiny_gltf loader, not cgltf loader) but fails with DX12.
Alternatively, I made basic assimp loader with aiProcess_PreTransformVertices and aiProcess_ConvertToLeftHanded flags, which results in correct model rendering.

I am following the examples from the book " Learning OpenCV 3 Computer Vision in C++ with the OpenCV Library" and the following piece from Example 12-1 puzzles me:
A.convertTo(dft_A_part, dft_A_part.type(), 1, -mean(A)[0]);
as a result of this operation I was expecting the values of A being copied to dft_A_part after subtracting the value mean(A)[0] from each. Not the case, hence my confusion.
A is cv::Mat (CV_8U)
dft_A_part is cv::Mat (CV_32_F)
Some values:
mean(A)[0] = 88.65[0] = 77,[0] = 136.0[1] = 77,[1] = 140.0[2] = 79,[2] = 58.0
I understand that there is saturation_cast<> being applied in cv::convertTo() but how could that result in these numbers ?

after the final breath of feed43 i just lost 345 feeds, i am searching for a open source project preferably web like feed43, to run on a private server or locally
no mater the language, if works, if can recognize patters and generate the feed like feed43 does i am good
so i will be eternally grateful if you guys could recommend some opensource, generally on github for that, even if is a desktop app or console app, no matter if works i can convert into a web version.

Hi! I've been enjoying lately making various kinds of magitech on my blog. Today, I've decided to share my latest one. You can read it on my blog too. I hope you'll enjoy it!
The lightnings are chaotic. The lightnings are unpredictable. The lightnings are powerful. In the darkest of storms, bolts of lightning can surprise and startle us by striking something really tall. But... lightnings do seem to like metal. What if there was a way to trap it in a prison of metal? Let's just assume that there is a device for that, called "captor" for now. Now if we connect the captor to some very thin lines of metal (think like wires), we could perhaps find a use for them!
If you're lucky enough to see a metal struck by lightning, you'll probably notice that it's got hot. That's something we might want to limit if we want our wires to last very long. What if there was a magical device, one that we could attach the wire to restrict how much spark (lightning in wire, I'm getting tired of writing lightning over and over) gets to course through a wire at a given moment. Let's call it "limiter".
If we have a wire loop with a captor and maybe a limiter on it, we'll notice that in time, the spark does escape. We want to avoid that. Perhaps this process could be slowed down if we make it so bits of wire can be detached or attached with a manual human-activated motion. Like a button or something similar. Let's call it "flip".
What if there was a way to make it so that a wire works as a limiter only in one direction? And like a very effective limiter at that. I'm not sure what this could be useful for just yet, but it could perhaps force the spark to travel in a deterministic direction within the wires. Let's call such a limiter "director" because it directs which way the spark flows.
There's one more important part of this puzzle that should be discussed. You can create a magical device out of silicon that has two inputs and one output (don't feel like figuring out how). One of the inputs is a source, and the other input is a control. The spark travels from the source to the output wire only if the control doesn't have a spark. I'm imagining it sort of like a portcullis, which is held down if there's someone who can pull it down at its lever or whatever those used to be controlled with. That's why I'm gonna call it "gate".
Now, let's say that I connect three wires together, attaching directors to two of them arranged so that the spark would flow towards the meeting point. If either of the directed wires has a spark in it, the one without a director gets it too. Maybe attach a limiter to it too just to make sure the wire will be fine. We got ourselves a way to detect the presence of a spark on any of multiple inputs!
How about this. If you attach a captor to the gate's source input, and attach some wire that can but doesn't have to have a spark in it to the controller, the gate will let a spark through to the other side only if the control is off. And that's how we got ourselves a way to negate the spark!
Since we can negate signals, as well as combine them, we could work out support for the rest of the logic from there. I'm pretty sure that the gates could somehow also be built so that information can be stored in them, probably through a complicated combination of gates. But I think this can go further.
The legends speak of an arcane ritual that involves weaving a wire around a rod into a spiral. When you let spark into such wire, it will magically draw closer objects made out of metal. I'm gonna call this "spool", and its applications are obvious. You could use this to move metal objects around, thus letting us convert spark into mechanical movement!
I believe I could keep on making more and more technology for this purely hypothetical world in the future. Perhaps the heat from the wires could be useful for something, like heating devices. Maybe I could even find a way to redirect the heat somewhere else involving special liquids and making cooling devices. Heated metals glow, so they could be used for producing light. There could of course be other ways to make light as well. Maybe there could even be a way to communicate between two wires without them being connected through some sort of spark-related invisible energy. And if I were to learn more about lightnings, maybe I could come up with further applications for this new kind of technology. But I'll cut it here for now.
But for now, I think I'm gonna stick to runes because they require less explaining. Besides, I do believe many authors have already utilized sparktech in their own creations, though they tend to label it "electronics" for some reason beyond me. Etymology tells me that that word is derived from amber, and frankly I don't know what that has to do with any of this.

Is it just me or do you find it rude of opponents to request a draw when they are clearly in a losing position?
I was playing a 24h per move match and this game went on for more than a week. Opponent is rated 300 more than me for daily, and 3 times more than me on rapid and blitz and was proving to be a tough match.
Move for move, it seemed very even and all the while I thought to myself "what a fun and challenging match, I would like to add them as a friend and play them more often".
Finally, I was able to exploit some mistakes and found myself in this position as black. My queen was a converted pawn by the way. Then my opponent requested a draw. I was stunned. I felt insulted. I know it's not that serious and overall, they can do what they want but I immediately came to the realization that I would never want to friend them or match them again. I can only imagine they were hoping I accidentally clicked the "check mark" and accept the draw.
Next move by me and it continued to be clear that mate was imminent and another draw request from my opponent popped up. I tried chatting to ask if they meant to resign but chat was disabled. Eventually they did resign but it left a bad taste and I wanted to ask how most people would have felt?
Again, no big deal which I feel compelled to say because I've written such a long post about it but whatever.
Is this common?
