2023.05.29 03:45 harry-jg How to Buy and Sell NFT
The modern art scene has evolved into something of a digital jungle, with NFT artists and collectors finding themselves in the crosshairs of online rogues, the digital counterparts of our friendly neighbourhood pickpockets. Some of these scoundrels have made off with sums large enough to give Uncle Tom a fit of the vapours. While most NFT bazaars fortify their establishments with security as tight as Bertie's Aunt Agatha's grip on his allowance, these virtual marauders employ an array of clever tactics to ferret out chinks in the armour.
Also, patrons who step into the NFT marketplace without a fair understanding of the potential hazards are likely to fall prey to scams as varied as the ingredients in Anatole's menu, unless they adopt the proper cybersecurity etiquette.
In this discourse, we shall traverse the path of safety in the acquisition, disposal, and conservation of NFTs, with a special focus on the common pitfalls one must be wary of before taking a plunge into this sea of digital artefacts.
Take heed, however: this account does not aspire to the status of financial counsel. Should one wish to treat NFTs as financial steppingstones, it would be prudent to seek out the advice of a seasoned financial advisor well-versed in the intricacies of digital assets, including NFTs and cryptocurrencies. As with all matters of great importance, prior personal research into NFTs and cryptocurrencies is highly recommended before parting with your hard-earned pounds or engaging in any trading of said assets. One should be as aware of the risks associated with these dealings as Jeeves is of Bertie's numerous romantic entanglements.
NFTs: A Gentleman's Guide to the Artefacts of the Digital Age An NFT, you see, bears an uncanny resemblance to a digital autograph (fondly dubbed a "Token") which serves as a certificate of proprietorship over a virtual asset – these assets might range from digital masterpieces and collectibles to prime digital real estate. The best analogy for these NFTs, is they are much like the deeds to your stately family home. Now, the deeds themselves do not constitute the building, but rather the legal evidence of your dominion over it. Similarly, an NFT does not represent the actual work of digital art but is a token of its ownership.
The operations of NFTs are underpinned by a nifty invention called blockchain technology, which plays the role of the dutiful Jeeves, handling the transaction and safekeeping of these NFTs. Using some form of secret code language or 'cryptography', these blockchain networks pave the way for trusted dealings sans the requirement for a third-party interference (a meddlesome middleman, so to speak) and ensure the secure archival of all records.
So, what exactly does NFT stand for? Well, it’s an abbreviation for "non-fungible token." Now, if something is "fungible", it implies that it can be exchanged for an identical item without affecting its value. A dollar bill, for instance, is fungible, as you can swap it for another dollar bill, with no impact on its worth. However, a "non-fungible" item means that there aren't any equivalent assets it can be swapped for. These are generally one-of-a-kind items, akin to custom timepieces, limited edition figurines, and singular art pieces. Thus, an NFT, being a unique entity, cannot be directly swapped for another NFT. The "token" part of non-fungible token refers to the digital signature that authenticates ownership. If you hold the unique signature or "token" tied to an asset, you can assert your ownership of said asset.
Perils and Pitfalls: A Navigational Chart for the NFT Voyager While the sturdy vessel of blockchain technology that navigates the choppy seas of NFTs might be as secure as the Bank of England, there still exist several pesky barnacles clinging to its hull, threatening to place NFT users in a bit of a soup. These include, but aren't limited to, nefarious wallet raids, weak points in the defences of NFT platforms, unsavoury exploitation by computer bugs and viruses, cunning phishing expeditions, and the ever-so-sly scams of social engineering.
Invisible Pestilence: A Tale of NFT's Malware Marauders As in all spheres of existence, the shimmering world of NFT platforms too has had its fair share of skeletons in the closet - loopholes cunningly exploited by the digital bounders, letting them 'airdrop' NFTs, teeming with malevolent attachments, right into users' wallets. Now, an 'airdrop', in the decent, respectable circles of cryptocurrency and NFT projects, is merely a benevolent act of tossing a free item into a user's crypto wallet - as harmless as handing out complimentary biscuits at the club. However, when these seemingly innocuous airdropped NFTs come bearing hidden malware like a Trojan horse, unwary users could inadvertently download these digital pests, resulting in an unsolicited exhibition of their most private data. This could range from crypto wallet passwords and private keys to backup phrases, personal information, and all manner of things best kept under wraps.
A Fishing Trip Through the NFT Seas: Phishing Attacks, Smishing Scandals, and Counterfeit Webpage Woes Imagine, if you will, a bustling scene of NFT enthusiasts, going about their business, trading and collecting digital treasures. Yet, lurking in the shadows are the incorrigible digital miscreants, plotting their next phishing attack. Yes, phishing, the nefarious act of pretending to be a legitimate entity to hoodwink unsuspecting NFT users into parting with their crypto wallet's private keys or backup phrases. Once obtained, these felons swiftly empty the user's wallet of its NFT collections and associated funds, as swiftly as one might drain a bottle of the finest claret.
Regrettably, the machinations of these digital ruffians have only become more sophisticated. Enter 'smishing', a novel variant of phishing, where the attackers deploy deceptive SMS messages to the user's mobile device, leading them to click on malicious links or persuading them to part with their two-factor authentication codes that guard their NFT wallets and online accounts.
And as if that weren’t enough, these rogues have added website forgery to their arsenal of deceit. Creating facsimile versions of legitimate NFT platforms or of popular NFT collection websites, they strategically place ads that lure users onto these bogus sites. Once ensnared, the victims are coaxed into entering sensitive information such as recovery phrases, providing the hackers with a one-way ticket into their crypto wallets, and a free hand to pilfer NFTs and cryptocurrency funds at leisure.
Under the Cloak of Camaraderie: A Tale of Digital Miscreants and Social Engineering Shenanigans Picture a digital rogue so crafty, he's able to coax the private details out of an unsuspecting NFT enthusiast, simply by utilising the tools of social engineering. These chaps dive headlong into the personal lives of their victims, looking for the perfect hook with which to draw them into their deceitful net. It might be a shared interest or hobby that they latch onto, creating a false sense of camaraderie and trust, as cunning as a fox that’s just been made the head of hen-house security.
These swindlers have no shortage of tactics up their sleeves, with some bold enough to impersonate customer support personnel on Twitter for reputable NFT platforms, such as OpenSea, or even masquerade as employees on an authentic platform's Discord server. And don't think for a moment that these schemes are amateurish! Oh, no! These social engineering plots can be so exquisitely sophisticated and meticulously organised, they might even hoodwink the most savvy of NFT users.
Consider, for instance, these rogues posing as a legitimate business, keen on partnering with reputable NFT traders. They engage in convivial exchanges, build a rapport, and once the stage is set, they pull the rug out from under their unsuspecting targets, tricking them into sending cryptocurrency funds to a duplicitous wallet. So, just as in the tales of old, where the sly fox tricks the unsuspecting lamb, in the world of NFTs, it pays to keep your wits about you and not take things at face value.
The Case of the Bumbling Wallet and the Crafty Crypto Caper Imagine, if you will, a crypto wallet—just your everyday digital purse, mind you—coming under attack by a band of cunning hackers. This woeful predicament usually arises when the wallet's custodian fails to adhere to the gold standard in security procedures. The miscreants employ a variety of tools in their digital skulduggery, with phishing being their favourite pastime. But let's not forget the insidious malware—spyware, keyloggers, and the like—that stealthily monitor every twitch and click, ready to snatch up any juicy tidbits of sensitive data.
To ward off these digital rapscallions, one must store one's crypto wallet private keys with the utmost discretion, akin to how one might tuck away one's prized collection of first-edition Wodehouse novels. A stout password, sturdy as a bulldog's bite, is a must for any crypto wallet aspiring to stay out of the hands of these nefarious netizens.
And don't forget the cavalry in this digital fray—a robust antivirus program. Windows patrons might find solace in the arms of a program like Norton, while Mac aficionados might rest easier with Intego standing guard. With these loyal digital sentinels on patrol, your system will be as free of spyware, keyloggers, and data-pilfering malware as the Drones Club is free of an overly sober atmosphere.
Doppelgangers in the Digital Art Bazaar: The Tale of Bogus NFTs Imagine, if you will, a horde of scammers, much akin to troublesome gnats at a summer picnic, hatching counterfeit NFTs in the likeness of popular collections. The whole operation is somewhat reminiscent of peddling sham concert tickets at the local gig, old chap.
Detecting these cunning replicas can be as tricky as spotting a speck of dust on Aunt Agatha's prized Chippendale settee. However, just like Aunt Dahlia's French chef Anatole has his telltale signs for distinguishing fresh truffles, these fraudulent NFTs bear certain tell-tale signs of inauthenticity, such as:
- Prices that could make a frugal Scotsman blush, being significantly less than those of their bona fide counterparts.
- Absence of verification (no blue checkmark donning their listing, the digital equivalent of a monocle, to vouch for their legitimacy).
- Orphaned from their original collection, much like a lone scone at a busy afternoon tea.
- Contract addresses that don’t match the original ones, a red flag as conspicuous as a fox at Blandings Castle.
- A trading volume lower than the level of sobriety at the Drones Club on a Friday evening.
Often, unsuspecting users, much like young Bingo Little swayed by the charms of yet another love interest, are lured by the attractively low prices of these faux NFTs. They mistake the bargain for a genuine good deal, only to realize they've been taken for a ride.
When navigating these choppy waters, my dear reader, stick to the blue checkmark, much like the North Star to a weary traveler. That little symbol could be your salvation in the topsy-turvy world of NFT trading.

2023.05.29 02:59 Dukeisdahouse Have AKG Y600NC; is XM5 worth the money to replace?
Got the AKG Y600 NC a couple of months ago and have relatively enjoyed them. I’m about 16 and make about $13 from my job. My sister recently got a pair of Sony XM5’s, and has enjoyed it but didn’t feel comfortable with the price after buying them and has decided to return them, but she offered me them for $350 without any tax or fees added on. Should I take the deal or stick with the AKG? I mostly would use it for Spotify and possibly gaming with the wire.

2023.05.29 02:27 SchwaHead I've never had to resale tickets and I am looking for tips
I have tickets for the two upcoming NC shows. With very little notice, I am not going to be able to make it. I'm pretty sad about that, but no reason I shouldn't try to get some of that ticket money back. So what is the best option: cash or trade, resale using the live nation app, etc? LN app is offering me an instant sale price that is not much below what I originally paid. Should I take that offer and give ticketbastard a little more money for nothing, or try to get more out of them? I'm not new to shows, been doing this for the last couple decades, but selling a ticket is completely new for me. Thanks I'm advance to everyone for any tips you may have.

2023.05.29 02:08 PollyTLHist1849 Intermission: "To Arms, Citizens!" A More Perfect Union
| In France, the world had begun anew. In the textbook example of absolute monarchy, a revolution had begun. First, the national assembly was established. Then, with the Storming of the Bastille, radical action against the Ancien Régime took place. The Storming of the Bastille, and the beginning of the French Revolution However, the revolution didn't stop there. King Louis XVI, the symbol of injustice, was rapidly stripped of his power. As France fell to instability, including royalist uprisings, a coalition of Britain, Austria, and Prussia united to strangle the revolution in the crib. The French Hang On! In 1792, the War of the First Coalition began. The Anglo-Austrian-Prussian alliance to crush France crossed into French territory. The Girondists in charge of France, shockingly, repelled them. Shortly after, anti-monarchist sentiments reached a peak. The monarchy was abolished, and Louis XVI, now Citizen Louis Capet, was to be held in the countryside until the end of the war. Famously, in his treason trial, the National Convention narrowly voted to spare Louis' life. The Cross-Examination of Louis XVI, who would be spared by the NC. As invasions and rebellions began, the Girondins miraculously fought them off. They began a policy of "Levée en Masse," conscripting an army to defend the fatherland. In just a year, the war turned around. The rebellions were put down, and France invaded the Austrian Netherlands. Meanwhile, the Convention empowered the navy to better counter the British at the sea. Though not every battle was a success, their navy didn't rot in harbours while the British ruled the waves. The Republic of Batavia Following a considerable military victory, France aided the "patriots" of the Dutch Republic in overthrowing the old regime. They established a new republic, styled after the French one, and did away with the aristocracy of old. The Little Corporal After putting down a major revolt, a man named Napoleon Bonaparte was put in the spotlight. Besides his silly name, he was also a military genius. Bonaparte proved his worth in 1795, when he helped to single-handedly turn around the so-called "Italian Campaign". Bonaparte famously crossed the Alps to surprise-attack the Austrians. In a now-legendary feat, he crossed his men through the Alpine region, and into Italy, to defeat the Austrians in the battle of Rovereto. Bonaparte crosses the Alps, in 1795. Eventually, after the fall of Italy, a puppet government was set up. France gained land in the Alps, dividing it with its newest sister republic: the Republic of Italy. The Dust Settles By 1796, the frontlines were unmoving. The French Republic, under the Girondins, had defeated their enemies and crushed the traitors. They stood strong as a bastion of liberte, egalite, and fraternite. However, what to do with them was an issue in the United States? The Republicans and Agrarians were firmly in favour of joining France. The Republicans were firmly at the centre of it, while the Agrarian Justice Party was firmly in favour of getting soldiers in Europe to fight alongside France. The Agrarians further believed in levying an army to stand against all invaders, anathema to the Republican opposition to a standing army. The Federalists, on the other hand, preached neutrality. They were close to Britain, and relied on them for trade. At the same time, the French had become incredibly popular among the people. The Federalists, instead of opposing France, proclaimed that it wasn't their war to fight. Chief Justice-turned-Secretary of State-turned-Chief Justice John Jay spelled out Federalist views with the Jay Treaty. It is increasingly clear that the 1796 election will be between neutrality and war. While America once squabbled over internal disputes, for the first time, America must deal with something truly frightening: war with alien powers, the masters of Europe. submitted by PollyTLHist1849 to Presidentialpoll [link] [comments] |

2023.05.29 02:00 fearless_fool Are solid-state step down switchers ready to replace distribution transformers?
I'm far from a power electronics expert. But I observe the following interrelated trends:
- Distribution transformers (those tanks on top of utility poles that typically link the
750V 12.47 kV distribution network (thanks@blakef223 for correction) to 240V residential power) are in short supply , at least in the US. - The steel used in the transformer cores is a bottleneck.
- Ditto for copper.
- Demand is growing rapidly with the growth of the EV market (and residential heat pumps, induction cook-tops, etc.)
- High-power solid-state switching technology is getting cheaper and more capable.
Putting all those things together, is there an economic argument for using solid-state switchers to replace "analog" distribution transformers? And if not today, do you have a prediction if and when solid state switchers might attain price parity with their analog equivalents?

2023.05.29 00:58 TSMaynard1 [RF] ABP "Always Be Preparing"
Pine needles brushed across Paul's arms as he charged through the trees with his bugout bag slung over his shoulders. Weighing in at forty pounds, it hardly slowed him down as he’d practiced this hike many times. He flicked his wrist and checked his Garmin Solar 2 Tactical Watch. The timer read: 2:23.
“You can do this, Paul.” He increased the pace and gritted his teeth, the weight finally having an effect. Paul bounded over a small creek, up a rolling hill, and pushed through a row of baby birches into a clearing. He doubled over to catch his breath and looked at his watch one more time. Two hours and twenty-eight minutes. Paul pumped his fist in victory.
After a short break, he approached a thorny bush in the center of the clearing. Paul brushed aside sand at the bush’s trunk, revealing a yellow rope. He pulled it, which lifted a hidden door in the ground covered with dirt, shrubbery, and other camouflage on the top side, and drab gray iron on the other. Underneath, wooden stairs descended into darkness. Paul retrieved a flashlight from his pack, clicked on the beam, and disappeared into the earth.
At the bottom of the steps, Paul faced a steel door and a combination lock. With several quick swipes of the dial, he opened the lock and tugged the metal door, which creaked as it cracked open. Paul flashed the beam on the offending hinges and shook his head. Something to fix later. He stepped into the secret chamber and pulled a hanging aluminum chain that turned on a large halogen light, illuminating a twenty-foot by eight-foot metal rectangle. The exposed corrugated walls revealed the bunker was nothing more than a shipping container. Paul buried it two years ago and had divided the interior into three spaces. The entry had a shelf with four dozen gallon jugs of sealed water along with a portable toilet, stacks of toilet paper, and a wastebasket. The middle section was the main living area and contained a futon, a TV with a DVD player, and a neat collection of movies underneath. A nightstand housed a small library of books, including the Bible, The Art of Meditation, Buddhism for Dummies, and other spiritual tomes. The back area of the unit had two shelves filled with canned food—black beans, green beans, peaches, peas, carrots, beef, and chicken. There was also a stationary bike, which was Paul’s proudest accomplishment because he had rigged it to a giant battery that provided power to all the electronics.
Paul was a prepper, and this would be his home when the end of the world came, an event he believed was imminent. The global economy was a house of cards built on greed, corruption, and inflated asset prices, but worst of all, it was based on a faith in paper and digital money.
His fear was triggered four years ago when he attended a lecture by a professor who explained the fragility of the world’s financial system. If a few banks failed, it would rattle people’s confidence, causing a herd-like response. Thousands of people would rush to withdraw their cash, which the banks no longer had because they’d invested it. The banks would either fail, and everyday folks would lose their life savings, or the government would print new money to replace the missing money, making all money worth a lot less. Anyone holding dollars would attempt to convert them to other assets.
Just like dominoes, the banks would topple over one by one, and as they crashed, people’s faith in money would crater. After all, what was money? It was just paper with printed images and numbers that we’d all accepted as having value. More recently, money had become numbers displayed on a computer screen, something Paul knew firsthand as he spent the first seven years of his career working at a regional bank in Asheville, North Carolina. Paul could literally change someone’s net worth with a few keystrokes. He could turn a pauper into a millionaire, or he could bankrupt the richest account holder. Sure, there were safeguards, but all were built on faith, which Paul believed was misplaced. Most people didn’t realize that the Federal Reserve only required each bank to hold at least ten percent of its deposits as a reserve. Ten percent. That’s it. The rest of the money was invested in loans or other financial instruments. As the rich bank owners and executives pushed for bigger and bigger returns, they invested in riskier and riskier assets. The lessons from the financial crisis of 2008 had been forgotten.
Once the monetary system collapsed, the entire economy would become paralyzed. Without a means of exchange, transactions would halt. Think about it. If someone tried to give you a slip of paper that you thought was worthless, would you give them anything of value in return?
The doomsday scenario would escalate. Food and water prices would skyrocket, but with no way to purchase them, many would starve. But people don’t just roll over and die, they would riot and take what they need to survive. Marshall Law would be implemented, but citizens would revolt against the government they felt had cheated them.
As Paul listened to the lecturer that fateful day, a depressing epiphany struck. Everything he’d learned and everything he’d spent his life acquiring was worthless.
Growing up, Paul had been taught the value of money, saving, and planning for retirement. He internalized these lessons as a teen after his father got sick and lost his job. His mother had died when he was very young, but his father still managed to provide him with a stable childhood, even though they were barely middle class. When his father fell ill, Paul witnessed firsthand how fast a family could sink into financial trouble, which couldn’t have come at a worse time. He was applying to colleges, and instead of choosing the one he liked best, he chose the one that gave him the most financial aid, which turned out to be a small school half-way across the country. He also didn’t choose a major he was excited about; he chose the one that would offer the safest financial prospects—economics with an emphasis on banking.
The distance from home meant that Paul didn’t see the rapid deterioration of his father. It wasn’t until he returned for the funeral that family friends told him how the disease had spread. His father had refused to let anyone tell Paul because he didn’t want that to distract Paul from his studies.
After graduating, Paul accepted a job at a bank, and immediately signed up for the company’s 401K match. Most college graduates can't grasp retirement when they enter the workforce, but a 401K match was free money. Over the next several years, Paul worked diligently to advance his career while saving most of his salary. He’d mapped out his life on an excel spreadsheet and calculated that he’d be financially secure at 53.
Everything went according to plan until that damn lecturer came along and blew it up. Sifting through the rubble of his grand scheme, Paul realized that in the new world order, he possessed no skills to survive. The savings he’d so meticulously built up would have little to no value. When the economy collapsed, he'd be like a baby, unable to do anything for himself.
After a week of wallowing in despair, Paul rallied himself. “I can still fix this” became a daily mantra. To start, he threw himself into survival classes. The first was a basic camping course where he learned how to create shelters and start a fire. The next class was more advanced and focused on water purification and building snares for small game.
Paul continued working at the bank, because he needed to pay for the classes and survival equipment he began hoarding, but on his next vacation, he put his training to the test. He planned to camp for a week in the Appalachian Mountains, but the temperature swings, especially at night, were too much. Paul lasted three nights in the wild. The humbling experience forced him to admit that he wasn’t a bushman. His depression returned until he stumbled upon an article about “preppers”—individuals who prepare for end of world disasters. Suddenly, things made sense. He didn’t need to abandon all the comforts of modern society. He needed to prepare for the end of the world the way he had planned for retirement.
As Paul traveled down the rabbit hole of prepping, he uncovered an underground society of people like him who knew the truth about the world’s demise. Of course, not everyone believed it would end because of an economic collapse. Some thought a nuclear war would destroy civilization. Others feared electromagnetic pulses from the sun would wipe out all modern electricity. And still others worried a massive volcanic eruption would spew enough ash and soot into the air to blot out the sun. There was no shortage of theories about the world ending, but one thing was clear. The world would end. Did it matter how it happened?
Paul began his prepping quest by purchasing ten acres an hour and a half outside of Asheville. It had plenty of small animals and a creek running through the middle. He then transported an unused cargo container to the land and buried it. This was the toughest part of the plan because it required heavy equipment. Next, he dug out a staircase and installed a steel door at the entrance. Finally, he furnished it with a mix of modern comforts and survival essentials.
Almost every weekend, Paul trekked to his underground sanctuary and made improvements. He also planned his bugout strategy. When the end of the world hit, he figured he needed to be safely hidden in his home within two and a half hours, a time he had achieved with this latest trip. Everything was set, and Paul could finally relax. He was prepared.
Paul slumped down on his futon and considered playing a movie or cracking the bottle of Jim Beam whiskey he stored in a special cabinet, but he shook off the urge. Those things were the rewards and comforts he’d enjoy after the world ended. His fingers rubbed the top of the Bible, something he planned to read cover to cover once the global economy cratered. He’d have plenty of time then to discover his spiritual side, but not now. Something else needed to be done. Something he’d missed.
The biggest mistake a prepper can make is assuming he had everything covered. This was the lesson taught by Yannis, the guru of the prepping world. He was so well-known within the doomsday community; he only went by one name. The guy was sharp as a whip and could live off the land, if necessary, but he preferred a more sophisticated lifestyle, so he created a luxurious cave that contained backup systems for all his backups. Food, water, shelter, and electricity were all taken care of, and it was projected that Yannis could survive ten years comfortably after the apocalypse. His famous blog titled “ABP” stood for Always Be Preparing. It was a motto Yannis lived by and something Paul aspired to, but as he sat in his bunker after the relentless hike, fatigue set in. He didn’t want to think about prepping or his bugout strategy. He wanted to just be.
Paul tilted his head back onto the futon’s cushion, and a loneliness crept into his mind. All his prepping left little time for relationships. He dated off and on in college, but it was never anything serious. It wasn’t like his high school sweetheart, Kristin Summer. They dated junior and senior year, but then Paul broke it off when his father got sick. Paul couldn’t focus on romance, and he knew the relationship wouldn’t have worked when he left for school 1,500 miles away. It still hurt when he learned from a friend that Kristin started dating Derek Gorman, an old classmate Paul hated. It hurt even more when he found out they had gotten married.
After college, Paul joined a couple of dating sites, but he hadn’t used them in over two years. Most women wouldn’t understand his prepping lifestyle, at least that’s what he feared, so he rejected dating before anyone could reject him. But most wasn't all, and with eight billion people on the planet, there had to be someone for him. Almost without thinking, Paul pulled out his phone and opened “My Match,” the site where he’d had the most luck. His profile still had a photo from his early banking days. He was clean shaven with a naïve smile. The face staring back in the picture differed greatly from the bearded survivalist he’d become. Would anyone consider a relationship with the new Paul? Only one way to find out. He snapped a selfie, uploaded it, and then updated his hobbies with the first being “prepping” followed by “survival skills training.” He finished by pressing the button that showed he was actively looking for someone. All he had to do now was wait.
After spending the night in his bunker, Paul checked the dating site in the morning. No response. “It was a stupid idea,” he told himself, and stuffed his phone back into his pocket. He locked his container and returned home.
Over the next two weeks, Paul received zero requests for a date. He didn’t even receive a message from anyone to start a conversation and test the waters. “Shake it off, dumbass,” he said alone in the confines of his cottage-style home. “The world is going to end, anyway.” He clenched his jaw and did what he always did. He researched more ways to survive. Paul poured over blog posts and imagined worst-case scenarios. How could his water be contaminated? Maybe he should bury some caches of water. What if someone finds his shelter? Maybe security cameras were needed. What if he gets lonely in his shelter? No ideas came to mind.
After his eyes got tired from reading, Paul clicked out of his browser, and the list of all his apps stared at him. For reasons unknown to him, he opened Facebook, something he hadn’t done for months. There were a handful of notifications and a couple of friend requests sent weeks ago. His heart raced when he saw the name of one—Kristin Summer. When he accepted, he saw she was on-line right then.
Should he message her? Would that be weird right after accepting her request? But wasn’t it weird that he hadn’t responded for several weeks? He pulled up the messenger and typed. “Hey. Sorry for the delay in accepting your request. Hadn’t been on Facebook in a while. Been busy. Hope you and Derek are well.”
He curled his lip in disgust as he typed Derek’s name and considered deleting it, but he took the moral high ground and hit “send” with his message unaltered.
Kristin Summer. Just the thought of her name brought a smile to Paul’s face.
Bing.
The sound alerted Paul to a response, which he read out loud. “Hey Paul. Good to hear from you. Derek and I divorced a little over a year ago. It was rough at first, but it was for the best. How are you?”
Paul’s eyes widened with shock and excitement. He couldn’t believe Derek was so stupid to let Kristin go. Paul could at least blame their breakup on his father’s illness. His fingers prattled away on the keyboard. “Things are amazing.” He stopped typing. That was a lie. Should he pretend like things were great or should he be honest and tell her about his prepping and the end of the world? Neither option sounded appealing. He tapped the keys without writing until he settled on something uncontroversial.
“Working at Trinity Bank in Asheville. It pays the bills. Where are you?”
Within a minute, the sweet sound of the notification binged. “I’m not too far away in Durham. If you’re ever in town, let me know.”
If you’re ever in town, let me know.
Paul couldn’t believe his eyes. Was Kristin asking him out? He shook his head. Nah, she’s probably just being polite. But maybe. If there was any chance, he had to find out. He chewed his lip and deliberated his next response. Fortune favors the bold, he told himself. Then he remembered Matt Damon telling people that in the now infamous commercial for FTX months before its collapse. When that occurred, Paul thought it was the beginning of the end, and he lived in his bunker for two days before emerging and finding the world still intact.
Paul clenched his fist. It was still good advice, and he had to try. Almost involuntarily, he typed, “I’ll be there tomorrow afternoon. If you want to get together, let me know.” His finger hit send before he could talk himself out of it. There was no qualification in the message. No waffling or hedging. It was clear Paul wanted to see Kristin. The only question now was whether she wanted to see him.
The next ten minutes felt like ten days. Paul paced back and forth with his hands over his head, and he glanced at the monitor every few seconds, just in case his ears had missed the notification alert.
There was nothing.
A dark depression filled the room. Why had he gotten his hopes up? What was the point, anyway? The world was going to end.
Bing.
Paul leapt to the computer and his eyes widened with each word he read. “How about a lunch at The Fig Tree Restaurant on 7th?”
People overuse the word literally, but Paul at least felt like his jaw was literally on the floor. He had a date with Kristin Summer, the one woman he had loved. His hands rattled away at the keyboard. “See you at 1 tomorrow.”
“Holy crap,” he muttered to himself.
Panic replaced his excitement when he imagined sitting down and talking to Kristin. What would he say? “Hey Kristin, what have you been up to? Oh me? I’ve been working at a job I hate and planning for the end of the world.”
He drifted into the bathroom and stared at the scruffy character in the mirror. Paul could only cringe at the thought of Kristin’s reaction upon seeing him. She might not recognize the bearded loner who resembled Ted Kaczynski more than the short-haired, clean-shaven teen she last saw.
Only one thing to do.
Paul had to prepare. He opened a drawer and pulled out a pair of clippers. He began trimming his beard and mustache as short as the clippers would allow. Next, he applied a generous amount of cream and shaved all of it off. Paul smirked at the young man hiding under the shabby beard, but it still wasn’t enough. He set the guard on the clippers to a four and began shaving his head. In college, Paul cut his own hair to save money, and the skill came back to him quickly. He dropped to a three and worked in a fade on the sides and then finished with a two. Paul turned to the left, then to the right, and assessed his work. Not bad.
Next thing to prepare was his outfit. Paul slid the door of his closet open and evaluated his choices. A banker’s suit was too stuffy, and his mountain man denim was too hermit inspired. He yanked the clothes aside and climbed deeper into the recesses of his wardrobe until he found a nice buttoned-down shirt and a dark pair of slacks. It gave just the right vibe of successful and stable, while not trying too hard to impress, even though that was his precisely his goal. Paul laid the selection on the chair by his bed. Durham was a three-and-a-half-hour drive away, and he wanted to make sure he got there with time to find parking, and maybe use the restroom. He set the alarm on his iPhone for 6 a.m. That would give him plenty of time to take a shower, have breakfast, and get dressed.
There was no chance of falling asleep easily. His mind raced with thoughts, questions, and various scenarios about what the day would bring. To relax, he poured himself a double whiskey, which he downed with a single slurp. He poured another and sipped.
Kristin Summer. He shook his head, still in disbelief.
As the effect of alcohol set in, Paul laid down on his bed and shut his eyes. Tomorrow would be a good day.
Paul slipped into a deep, satisfying sleep until his mind jolted him awake. It was past 6 a.m. He didn’t know how he knew. He just knew. Paul had slept through his alarm. He snatched his phone off the nightstand, but it was out of battery. He checked his watch and saw it was 7 a.m. There was still time to get to Durham.
Paul jumped out of bed and into the bathroom. He flicked on the light switch, but nothing came on. Paul toggled it on and off, but the outlet was dead.
Police sirens wailed in the distance. Paul meandered out of his house and onto the front lawn. Aside from the sirens, there was an uneasy stillness. Paul’s neighbor Kurt ran out from his home with two suitcases that he flung into the trunk of his car.
“Kurt. What’s going on?” Paul asked.
“Fort Knox was bombed. All the gold was obliterated. And something happened to the electricity and the internet. They shut it down.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know, man, but it’s not good. No one has access to news, no money, nothing.”
“Where are you going?” Paul asked.
“I don’t know. Somewhere isolated. I’m just hoping there are no more bombings or other attacks.” Kurt jumped into his car and sped away.
This was it. The world was ending. All of his preps were about to pay off. But what about Kristin? Paul didn’t want the world to end. If he tried to get Kristin, there was no chance he could reach his shelter before things get hairy. Plus, there was no way he could find her. He didn’t have her address, and she might have already left Durham for somewhere safe.
Paul forced himself to focus on his plan. This was what he had prepared for. He dashed back inside and changed into his camouflage gear, grabbed his bugout bag, and then sprinted to his truck. He drove through his neighborhood and reached the main road. His shelter and plans were to the left. Kristin and the unknown were to the right. The whites of Paul’s knuckles flared as he gripped the steering wheel. Now was not the time to waffle. He turned left and hit the accelerator.
Paul gritted his teeth and raced down the street. Keep going. Keep going. He urged himself on. Almost involuntarily, his foot slammed on the brakes. Paul couldn’t do it. He’d planned for the worst all his life, and while he sat alone with the engine idling, he had to admit the truth. He’d lived all his life in fear.
Paul yanked the wheel and turned around toward Durham.

2023.05.29 00:48 gatopreto13 First Trip Ever! Report 05/21 - 05/26
First of all I want to thank everyone in this sub because all the tips and tricks were so useful to make my first trip the perfect trip to WDW! Never used Genie+, so I guess I was very lucky with crowds levels and timings to go to the rides, but also it helped that we did always rope drope to end everyday (yes, my feet hate me by now). This was a very special trip as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and my birthday.
Hold on, this is going to be long!
Day 1 (05/21) MK - I still can’t believe how my first day was such a perfect day. The crowds were low and I was able to ride everything I wanted to and this includes 7DMT (as a huge Snow White fan I loved it), Big Thunder (10/10!), Space Mountain (my neck hated it), Tron (such a shame is so short), Pirates, Haunted Mansion and even things that were not on my must do list such as Jungle Cruise, small world, Peter Pan, Under the Sea and all the other small rides and also Monsters’ Laugh Floor and Phillarmagic. The end of the day was really fun because after HEA we rode AstroOrbiter and was great to see everything illuminated from the top, a great experience!
We were so so lucky, when we arrived 7DMT had been down and got open just as we reached the line so it was a breeze! A perfect day for the start of the best trip ever! Also I have to confess I cried a lot at Happily Ever After, even more because it was exactly one of the things I was celebrating in this trip, our wedding anniversary :)
Day 2 (05/22) HS - Another day of luck, I waited so little to RotR and did everything I wanted to less Hollywood Tower. The only ride were I waited like hell and the wait time was not accurate at all was Slinky, plus the heat was hitting hard and I was feeling really awful so I guess it didn’t help also. We did RoTR (just WOW), Millenium Falcon, Slinky, Toy Story Mania (much funnier that Buzz Lightyear at MK), MMRR (still singing “nothing can stop us noooow” until today), Alien Saucers, Star Tours and spent plenty of time at Galaxy’s Edge immersed on the theming. We went to Oga’s Cantina by the end of the day (incredible experience), followed by Savi’s Lightsaber Workshop and by then it was already dark and rainning a lot which made it even more amazing, we felt that we were really sneaking to something secret, it was 10/10!
Day 3 (05/23) AK - I never thought this park would be so beautiful! This is by far the one with an overall best theming. We did the Safari early in the morning as I seen suggested a lot of times and animals were very active. Rode Everest twice, I loved it! It’s such a dynamic coaster, even when you already know what’s going to happen. We also did River Rapids, Dinosaur (a bit shaky this one), Naavi River (THAT animatronic tho!!) and FoP (sad that the 3D is already so messed up, it took away a bit of the immersion), also we did the Gorilla trek but it started to rain A LOT at the end of the day so we left earlier than we wanted to but we already did everything we wanted to.
Day 4 (05/24) MK - back to Magic Kingdom we repeated out favorite ones - 7DMT, Big Thunder (more than once!), Tron, Space Mountain, Pirates - and hopped on the train 2 times (I had to give a treat to my feet), went to Tiki Room, my husband insisted to go to Carousel of Progress and spent the rest of the day singing the song. It started to rain a lot but we didn’t give up and I have to say that riding Big Thunder while raining is such a fun experience! We lost a lot of time because of the rain, lots of rides started to close down because of thunder but we tried to make it the best. Closed the night with a shopping spree and once again I cried because MK means so much to me, all that magic that was my world when I was a child, seeing all the charactets who were my “friends” bak then it was very emotional to me and when I said goodbye to MK I cried a lot.
Day (05/25) EPCOT - this was the big celebration day! My wedding anniversary and my birthday! Wore my buttons with pride and got a huge surprise with Epcot! That park is great! My husband also loved it! We did Cosmic Rewind (one of the best coasters ever! I was a bit dizzy after it but worth it!), Test Track, Mission Space (both missions), Ratatouille (sooooo cool), Soarin’ (it was so cool, never thought I’d like this so much)and here comes the magic: we really wanted to do to Space 220 but we couldn’t grab a reservation. I installed an app to get notifications when there was an open spot but everytime I received one and tried to make a reservation it wasn’t available. We had no hope but that morning, while with my phone in hand I received the notification, and went right to MDE app and we did! The perfect birthday present! So around 4.30pm we closed the day for our Space 220 reservation (amazing experience, the food is not all that but the experience…worth every penny) and after we went to our other reservation: Biergarten. The food was amazing, a shame I couldn’t eat more because we didn’t plan to do Space 220 before but we tasted a bit of everything we wanted, the show is really cool, kids were dancing, people were singing and I was gifted a birthday cupcake with a candle :D
It was this day that we figured out: we need to come back. We always thought this was a once in a lifetime experience because we come from the other side of the Atlantic and this is a very expensive trip for us. But this worths the effort and we liked Epcot so much that it was like the spark for it.
Day 06 (05/26) HS - my stamina was getting low, but I was so happy for this trip! We repeated everything we did on the first day, the park was crowded but we managed it well with the waiting times. I was so happy that I even agreed to go on Tower of Terror (I went to the one at DLParis and I hated. I hated this one as well but the group we went with was so fun that made it a bit better). My husband spent all day talking about next year’s trip and while in lines planning the days (I always do the planning but he’s really hyped to go back). The end of the day couldn’t have been better with Fantasmic. Guess who cried again? My husband even took a photo of my crying potato face, it was very emotional, seeing all the characters while saying goodbye to this magical world!
If you stayed until here thanks for reading! We are now planning to go next year and also go to Universal Studios and Kennedy Space Center, so if everything goes for the best, next year I’ll have a new trip report for you!
Now I need to come back down to earth, have a great life and stay magical everyone!

2023.05.29 00:35 Cornconic Please read this. I'm all out of options and I desperately need your help.
To whom it may concern: this message is of the utmost importance. Please do not disregard it. I don’t know for sure what website you’ll be seeing this on, whoever you are. Probably something submission-based, hopefully one where it stays up. Regardless, it is imperative that you keep reading. I’ll explain why soon, but before I do, some context is in order.
My brother was a brilliant man. Brilliantly talented, brilliantly clever. It was difficult growing up in his shadow. We were raised in the same nurturing, middle-upper class environment, with two loving parents that encouraged us at every turn, but it seemed there was nothing I could do that he wouldn’t outshine me at. He was no savant, you see. Julian held his own in any situation, whether that be an exam or a party with friends. Hardly ever was he not the smartest person in the room, or the most popular.
Needless to say, I was a jealous sibling. My main source of bother was academic performance. I’m not an idiot, even in comparison to my brother, but I was an underachiever for a long period of my adolescence. I’m not sure what I’d attribute it to. Hanging around the wrong people, perhaps, having my head in the clouds, something like that. I’ve always been intelligent, but for a while I really struggled to knuckle down and
use that intellect. For so long, I heard the same tired expression:
“if you’d only apply yourself…” I’m sure some of you reading this can relate. It wasn’t until many years later that that sentiment really rang true.
I never outright hated Julian, but I have to admit there was invariably a growing seed of resentment in my heart for him, especially as we got older and his natural aptitude really began to shine. We both had an interest in computer science from a young age, most likely inherited from our father, who worked for Microsoft before they went out of business. I still remember those nights as kids when he’d sit us down in front of his computer and show us all the little intricacies of the code he was working on. Any other children our age would be bored out of their skulls, but there we sat, attentive as ever, our developing minds fascinated by the job’s seemingly endless possibilities. Julian’s other main curiosity, which I did not share, was an affinity towards online horror fiction, though he grew out of that kind of stuff in his late teens.
He knew I had a chip on my shoulder. Mostly, he was apathetic towards it; we were never estranged, but he wasn’t going to let my discontent get in the way of his success. Though I don’t blame him, I suppose that was always Julian’s downfall. He was just too headstrong, too confident.
When we became adults, we parted ways. He went on to study at Harvard while I ended up dropping out of some bang-average local university you won’t have heard of. Following that, things were a little rough. My parents were fairly disappointed. They didn’t cut me off, rather, interacting with them became a depressing chore as they waited for their son to get his life together. At family gatherings, I gritted my teeth at the stories Julian told: developing virtual reality hardware, cutting-edge stuff, pushing the boundaries of the way we interact with technology, all while I was couch-surfing, barely making ends meet as the IT guy at a shitty school in a town I hated. It only made the prospect of snapping out of whatever haze I was in feel more difficult.
It all changed one day soon after I got my first apartment. Julian showed up out of the blue on a dewy morning with an armful of equipment and a huge, beaming smile on his face. I let him in, we talked, and he promised that what he was going to show me would completely blow my mind.
I watched as he paced about my living room setting up all his gadgetry. As soon as everything was ready, he switched on my computer and handed me a thin, plastic headset with exposed wires. Two nodes hung from either side of the thing, which fitted snugly over my temples. While I sat back on the sofa and stared at the monitor before me, he gave me one simple instruction.
“Type something into Google.”
“But I don’t have a keyboard.”
“You don’t need one.”
According to Julian’s wishes, I simply thought about the action, and it happened. The word “something” came up in the search box, and my jaw dropped open in shock. At first, I thought the obvious, that my brother was purposefully fooling me with some kind of prank or gimmick, but repeated tests all came up with the same result. And it wasn’t just searching I could do telepathically, but
anything. Literally anything I could think of, limited to the capabilities of the computer, of course. I had total control. There was even a sort of projection in my mind’s eye as it was happening, like the process was actually occurring inside my brain. It wasn’t perfect, but it was nothing short of amazing.
“You’re one of the first people to try it,” he told me once I’d tested everything out. “We’re calling it NeuroWorks, or something to that effect.”
I don’t think that feeling of astonishment ever truly left me. It was then that I realised my petty indignation, the dissatisfaction I felt after so many years of being outclassed, meant nothing in the face of my brother’s achievements, and I would be doing the world a disservice by failing to assist him. Julian departed that night after some drinks and a few laughs, and the next day, I enrolled once again for a degree in computer science. Four years later, I passed with flying colours, and Julian hired me to work for him at his company. There may have been a bit of nepotism involved, but that’s neither here nor there.
The next few years were dizzying. During the time in which I was getting (re)educated, Julian had been working with a team of elite neuroscientists, specialists that filled in the gaps in his knowledge, did all the things he couldn’t. Immediately, I felt I was in way over my head, but as my learning advanced, I gradually got up to speed, and my mood improved quite rapidly. That feeling of pride, like I was finally doing something productive with my life, was nothing short of fantastic, especially in the face of so many wasted years. I was never quite on Julian’s level, of course, but with enough time, I grew to be a valued contributor to the NeuroWorks project. Off the back of a long period of arduous work, the device fully came to fruition, culminating in an international commercial release.
It was a global success, and we made a fortune. Once we’d fully optimised it, it ended up being surprisingly cheap to produce and implement. The result was its adoption in billions of households and businesses. As expected, it completely changed the way we live and work in the virtual world. Worldwide productivity and efficiency increased tenfold. Even now, I’m typing this message with those same two nodes attached at either side of my head, hands-free. As cliched as it sounds, at that point, it truly felt like we were living in the future.
Honestly, I would’ve been happy to stop there. I could’ve moved somewhere green and sunny, spent the rest of my days doing TED Talks and sipping cocktails on the balcony of a villa, not giving a single damn. But not Julian. Like always, Julian had his eyes set on further horizons, on the subsequent stretch of progress. No sooner than a few months after NeuroWorks was released did he come up with his next magnificent idea.
“Consciousness splicing.”
That was how he described it on the day he first sat me down to try and explain. We were outside a café, some pretentious, gentrified establishment in the heart of London, with a coffee each.
“The next stage of human learning, or maybe even existence as a whole. NeuroWorks, compared to this…it’s just a stepping stone, Alex,” he told me. “If we get this right, we won’t just be able to use computers with our minds, we’ll be able to
think like them, too.”
I struggled to wrap my head around the concept. “How do you mean, exactly?” I replied.
“Take what makes us sentient. Our minds, our passion, our free will. Everything a machine lacks. How can it be improved? How can it be bettered? What we lack naturally, we as a species, I mean, can be found in a computer. The processing power, the boundless memory, the objectivity. Not to mention the ability to conjure up any kind of information on a whim, the entire collective library of human knowledge, dating back thousands of years. But there are limitations. Computers can’t truly think for themselves. Not yet, anyway. They require input, direction. If we can intersect the strengths of man and machine, cross the gap that separates us…”
He was stirring his drink all the while. Julian had a thing about that: he could never look at you directly when he was thinking, like the image of your baffled face would put him off somehow.
“Okay, but you’re talking purely in theoretical terms, right? We’re centuries off reaching that point. I mean, creating a neural link between a person and Mac OS is one thing-
“I think it’s possible.”
A beat passed before he sighed, grabbed a napkin, and produced a pen from his pocket. I waited as he sketched out a crude, yet complicated diagram. I can’t recall it exactly – it was something to do with the relationship between time, space, and information. Far more philosophical than scientific, I remember thinking.
“The internet is a powerful beast. Our means of controlling it, of accessing it, even with NeuroWorks, are subpar. We just need another breakthrough, and then that could open the door for who knows what else. Traversing through decades online, going back and forth whenever we want-
“Easier said than done.”
“But it could be possible. It could.”
“I disagree. Not in our lifetimes, anyway. And even if it is, it sounds…dangerous. Very dangerous. The number of things that could go wrong, the variables…it doesn’t bear thinking about. We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. Let’s learn to walk before we run, eh?”
He was quiet after that. The conversation stuck with me for the next couple of years. We were working mostly on maintaining NeuroWorks at that time, delivering a steady stream of updates and enhancements as society began to mold itself around its advent. There was some discussion as to when the next big leap forward would be, the next huge announcement from Julian’s company, but he remained tight-lipped about anything regarding that.
It was then that he started acting…weird. I saw him less and less in what was supposed to be our spare time together. The cancelled reservations and missed family events added up, but whenever I asked him about it, he just shrugged it off. “I’m a workaholic,” he would say. “You know you all mean the world to me, but so does this job.” I tried to comfort myself with that, but deep down, I think I knew he was hiding something. Something he thought would worry me, that was outside my area of expertise. I was going to confront him about it eventually. I just ended up waiting too long.
One night, he rang me out of nowhere. I remember shooting straight up into a sitting position in a pitch-black room – I think I’d been having a nightmare. The metallic surface of my phone was cold and smooth in my sweaty palm as I picked up the call and pressed it to my temple.
“Meet me at this address in half an hour. And be quick.”
I spoke a word or two in return, but the call had already ended. There was a soft blip, and some postcode I didn’t recognise appeared at the top of the screen.
Doing exactly as my brother asked, I got up, got changed, and made the 20-minute journey by car.
The place was a run-down warehouse in one of the rougher areas of town, where property prices were at their cheapest. I parked up and stepped outside, shivering as I cursed myself for not having the foresight to bring a thicker jacket. It wasn’t immediately obvious which building I was looking for, until I saw a flash of light through a broken window in the distance. Cautiously, I approached it, glancing around to assure myself I wasn’t walking into a trap, as stupid as that thought was. The main door being completely boarded up meant an obscured gap in the brickwork was my entry point.
Dodging the tiny droplets of water trickling in from the broken ceiling, I rounded a corner. The main, spacious area of the warehouse had been kitted out as a kind of makeshift workshop, near identical to a setup from NeuroWorks. It was as if someone had carved out one of our labs and dumped it here, beside walls of crumbling paint. My brow was furrowed as I stared from a distance at the scurrying scientists, who flicked me awkward looks as they went about tending to a central apparatus. I recognised a few of them, but they paid me little mind. I’m sure they knew I was coming.
It took me a few moments to realise, but
Julian was part of the almighty cluster of machinery in the middle of it all. His body was a biological cog in an otherwise artificial setup; he was on his back, head tilted slightly forwards, arms splayed in a t-pose like he was being crucified. I’ll never get that image out of my head: him lying there, not having quite noticed me yet, sweat upon his brow. He was shirtless, too, wires running up and down his arms and a mesh inserted atop his shaved head, which was next to a monitor. The wires came down in gangly clumps off the side of the ‘bed’ he was on and fed into this gargantuan hunk of steel by his side. It was truly massive, topped with blinking lights and seemingly missing its outer casing. If I didn’t know better, I’d have assumed he’d been kidnapped and experimented on.
He looked at me, directly upwards from his perspective, and said, “You’re late,” through a smile.
I wasn’t smiling. “Julian, what the fuck is all of this?”
“I apologise for not telling you sooner. Truth be told, I didn’t want you to worry. But this is too important for you not to see.”
I was at a loss for words.
“What we’re going to do here, today, right now, will change the course of humanity. And you need to be here to witness it. So get ready.
We’re starting!”
He shouted that last sentence, and all the scientists in the room shuffled to what could only be described as their ‘posts’. I merely watched as they started a countdown sequence of sorts, dutifully coordinating the machine through a large control panel. They communicated with short, snappy gestures and mumbled technobabble that I could barely pay attention to. Instinctively, I stepped back until I was at an arbitrarily ‘safe’ distance.
Seconds later, my mouth turned dry and a quiet ringing in my ears began to form. I chalked it up to nerves initially, but it soon became apparent there was some kind of static in the air, palpable interference that manifested in a painful shock as my hand grazed the shiny edge of a worksurface. It seemed to be emanating from the middle of the room, where Julian was. His eyes were closed now, tightly; he gave the impression of someone concentrating very intently on something.
There was a hum, so low you almost felt it before you heard it, slowly increasing in pitch. I suddenly had a headache, and I’m almost certain my hair was standing up under the confines of my flat cap. Panic surfaced within me as I noticed the scientists arguing. I shouted a word of protest, only to realise my ears had popped, and the faint ringing from earlier now sounded like a cacophonous bout of tinnitus.
Something was clearly and utterly wrong. Julian’s deathly stillness as he honed his thoughts had ended, and he was now thrashing around, foaming at the mouth, unable to break free of his confines. I ran back over to his side-
“Don’t touch me!” He managed to force out. I could barely hear him, but the crazed look in his eyes, dilated like a cat’s, convinced me to leave him alone. Instead, I focused my attention on the scientists.
“What are you maniacs doing to him?” I yelled. “Fucking switch that thing off! Now!”
One of them came and pushed me away. His mouth was moving, but I couldn’t make out the words. The noise of the machine was just too loud. There was a collective moment of fear as the tone became ear-splitting. No-one could hear anyone anymore.
Julian looked like he was being possessed. My attention was drawn to the monitor beside him; before, it had been inert, but it was currently displaying a fast-moving, almost psychedelic kaleidoscope of uniform shapes and colours. If you’ve ever seen what a computer looks like when you remove its RAM while it’s running, it was like that, but even more erratic and animated. I was practically hypnotised by it, and as I gazed further and further into its depths, an awful image began to emerge.
It was Julian. I swear to god, I know it sounds crazy, but Julian’s face materialised in the form of this…nightmarish coalescence of text and code. His mouth was open, and his eyes were bulging out of his skull. I turned to my brother to see him doing the exact same expression there on the table, unable to breathe. It made me feel sick to my stomach.
Suddenly, the machine shut down, taking the monitor’s display and oppressive interference with it. Julian’s eyes glazed over, his face went pale as a sheet, and he slumped down onto his back, letting out a huge exhale. It was when he didn’t take another breath that two white-coated men went to check his pulse.
A single head shake between them confirmed what I feared. Gone.
I think I was in shock the whole rest of the night, because I didn’t speak a word to anyone until the morning. They sent me home in a taxi and promised to take care of what had happened. I burst into furious, bitter tears as soon as I put the keys in the door. I was so, so angry at being kept in the dark and lied to for so long, with this having been the culmination. Little did I know that was just the beginning.
Julian’s team called me into work the next day for a private meeting. To maintain the company’s work and appearance, they were going to sweep the whole thing under the rug.
Fucking figures, I remember thinking. My first urge, naturally, was to fight this burial, to expose them and bring about some sense of justice, but I was talked down from it. You might call me cowardly for that, but put yourself in my shoes for a minute; I had no real evidence at hand, and it soon became apparent that the scientists were only operating under my brother’s command. Everything had been planned out in advance, even the system that was being followed now, for what would happen if a fatal accident occurred. Telling the world the true events of that night would’ve been a losing battle – already, they’d began cleaning up their mess – demolishing the warehouse lab, scrubbing all evidence from the archives, etc. It was a tough call, but I felt compelled to adhere to my brother’s wishes and keep moving forward with NeuroWorks. You can judge me for that if you want, but I don’t care.
I forgave them all over time. It wasn’t even really their fault Julian had died that night – there’d been a freak malfunction with the equipment, leading to them being unable to turn it off. I won’t go too in-depth; there’s a lot about it that I still don’t understand to this day. Anyway, once the dust had settled, we put the incident behind us and gave up the whole ‘cutting-edge’ angle for a while. We started pursuing safer technological ventures like media creation, but that was when something strange began happening.
You see, Julian’s cause of death seemed obvious initially – most likely a heart attack or stress-related aneurysm – but the autopsy revealed something startling. There was little to no internal damage anywhere in his body: no burst blood vessels or spasmed arteries. Rather, all the electrical signals in his body had simply vanished simultaneously, deactivating his brain. It was as if he had literally been switched off.
None of this ever got out, of course. NeuroWorks, now one of the most valuable, powerful companies of all time, made sure of that. Julian’s death was publicly credited as a stroke due to undetected high cholesterol levels. But it’s certainly interesting considering what came after.
Over the next few weeks, we had virus troubles. A malicious software was making its way through our computer system. There was a bit of a panic to begin with; an internal investigation revealed we had far too much unsecured data that anyone working for a market competitor would be happy to steal and sell to the highest bidder, but the more we found out about it, the more curious we became. The strange thing about it was only partly what it did. Corruption and deletion are pretty bog-standard as far as viruses go, but its effects were largely patternless, like it was picking items at complete random. But it was also
when it was doing it. After some research, we found that people had been complaining about this mystery malware they’d designated as ‘WerStar’ (due to the word apparently repeating itself over and over again in damaged code and text boxes) since the beginning of the internet. Despite this, its existence had never been formally documented
anywhere, which is extremely bizarre. Whatever WerStar is, it’s completely transcendent of time.
We think we know what’s going on, though. We had our ideas to begin with, and there were plenty of skeptics amongst us, but a recent event has all but verified it. A couple of months ago, I found a .txt file on my computer that wasn’t there the day before, entitled ‘WerStargift’. It was an enormous mass of code that took weeks to fully analyse. Delving into the nitty gritty of the whole thing would take forever, but from what we’ve been able to glean from it (and I promise I’m being serious when I say this), it’s a formula for communicating virtually with the past.
Which brings us to today. Well,
our today. We’re sending this message from the year 2050 to what we’ve calculated to be the mid-2010s. Myself and Julian should only be little children. Don’t worry, this isn’t some Terminator-style mission to erase or alter a former timeline. We just need you to tell us something.
The code wasn’t the only thing in the .txt file. There was a message, a message we can’t read. It’s been cobbled together on an old, outdated editor that isn’t compatible with the modern NeuroWorks setup anymore. Believe me, we’ve tried everything, but not even old computers will display it. We think our failure to view it is the whole reason we’re even able to talk to you now. In your time, it should still be legible. You may need to do something with it, view it through a Source editor, perhaps, but it won’t be hard to decipher.
You should be able to communicate with us, too. Hopefully. We’ve tested this with random forums – dozens of messages we made that were supposedly sent in 2012, and had people respond to them in that same year. We’re well aware of the danger associated with this, but at the same time, it’s the only chance we’ve got.
I’m going to wrap this up by apologising. I’m sorry that I haven’t been more specific throughout this message; there’s a lot I’ve glossed over in the pursuit of keeping things relatively short. Maybe this is just a lost cause – the technology we’re using is still extremely unrefined, so there’s a chance this might not even get out there. But it’s been 10 years since Julian ‘died’, and I’d give anything to be able to see my brother again. If this works, if we’re able to somehow establish contact, then we may even be able to reverse the process, to find him a human host.
So, please, for the love of God, please, what does it say? Where is Julian?
