This reveal reminds me of Binah’s line back in library of ruina where she remarks along the lines of “What if the city isn’t meant to protect the people from the outside but to ensure that the outside is protected from away those that live in the city?” or something similar and I can‘t find where the line was said so can someone find where she said this please
The people in the city are so cruel that an literal alien-like deity is more empathetic than them and how they used how the alien deity is empathetic by making it watch the various horrible things and events happening in the city for profit
It makes me wonder though: Is all of this cruelty and ruthlessness is what the Head considered to be ideal state of humanity? The kind of humanity that can even bring down something that’s like a deity to their control and make it suffer just for profit? It is the Head‘s rule that cultivates this kind of environment in the city that ensures people are selfish, cruel, and violent after all

I have a 17 gal no-tech that’s heavily planted with a small colony of neo’s (about 10, one hatched eggs), some ember tetras, 2 nerites, and some pond snails. Some scuds hitchhiked into the tank during the initial setup, and while they weren’t an issue previously, there’s a lot of them now and they’re beginning to eat live plants as the shrimp colony grows and competes for food.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to safely remove scuds without damaging the rest of the ecosystem? I don’t want to put any chemicals into the tank given it’s quite balanced at the moment (ember tetras just had 13 babies). I know this leaves my options limited - any help appreciated!

I am visiting the Phu Quoc region of Vietnam with my girlfriend's parents. I was eating lunch with the family members when the dad offered me some wine. I thought it was regular alcohol so i accepted and drank the alcohol. I downed 1 shot (I am from korea, Korean people drink the whole shot at a time). They told me to sip it slowly so for the second shot i sipped in segments. The sim wine was served from a water bowl. It was a large bowl of water with the sim wine floating at the top. They scooped a bit each serving. 20 minutes in. I did not expect any alcohol to have an effect given how little i consumed. I have never had rose myrtle before and i started to feel distant from what i was seeing. I felt a bit off and was confused of what was happening. I went to the bathroom and noticed that I was not sober. This was such a different feeling from drugs consumed in the western world. The early feeling was confusion and anxiety. I was feeling nervous of the effects coming up and felt uneasy.
45 minutes + I was definitely high. It felt like mushrooms without any visual effects. It felt like i was disconnected with my surroundings. Similar to low dose of magic mushrooms without visual effects. A bit of disconnected confusion + relaxation. I was sitting inside a car with AC blasting and it was very refreshing given how hot Vietnam is during the summer. I decided to stop talking. It was the head high of magic mushrooms without anything affecting my eyesight. A bit of relaxation. I decided to stop talking. I felt nauseous for a moment but i did not throw up. I waited to get back to the hotel and lay down.

I felt like further from the ceiling. I felt like the space was getting bigger. I waited to sober up and went on with my day after. I returned back to sobriety.
I witnessed the elder drink multiple shot cups of this drink and wondered how they felt. The dad was mostly quiet in the car and no one spoke. Can anyone please tell me if they have heard about this drink? There is not much information online about it. Given i drank two small cups, it was strong and wondered if people in America have drank something similar

Why is it so rare to find books that have multiple entirely unrelated progression systems?
In novels that have multiple magic systems all the magic types ultimately come from the same source. Novels that use cultivation tend to make them different branches of the same thing. Novels with RPG mechanics all tend to make the supernatural elements sub-functions of whatever built the RPG.
I can see how a lot of authors do this to prevent characters being able to use more than one progression system, but coming off of Sci-Fi where authors are more than happy to cross-contaminate different technology systems and TTRPGs(Like D&D 3.5 or original pathfinder) where making as many mechanics/systems as possible was the selling point, so many progression fantasy worlds feel so much shallower then they could be.
It's like making a setting on an island and saying that island is the only thing that exists, it kills so much mystery and potential for exploration while it's story is still in it's crib.

Hi, I am an Indian and have visited Sweden twice. I am in love with the place and want to move there. I have been looking for jobs which sponsor visa but could not find any. 30M. Had stone retrieval + stent placement earlier this week under general anesthesia, but today I had the stent pulled. I was originally anxious about having an awake cystoscopy to have the stent removed, but that part actually wasn’t so bad.
About an hour after the stent came out, I had slowly building abdominal and flank pain that feels similar to passing my first stone. Anyone else have this? It’s continuing to get worse and I’m trying to figure out how long I’ll have to weather this out. Already took an extra dose of my NSAID and Tylenol.

"X2749," Dinyl logged breathlessly as he stumbled through the jungle. "The humans are not as they seem. I repeat, the humans are not as they seem. The monstrous noises at his back worsened, rising to a fever pitch as the sun set over the planet's horizon.
"Do not attempt to assimilate," he warned as he ran. "They understood I wasn't one of them, maybe even from the beginning. My camouflage has been working at optimal levels. It must be something else– something more primitive and intuitive that courses through them. I deployed the decoys, but they ran right through them– never for but a brief moment have they lost track of me."
He stopped behind a particularly thick tree to catch his breath. They hadn't halted their pursuit, but they had slowed for one reason or another. He looked down at the device on his wrist and noted that many were convening about a 45-second run behind him. Dinyl rested his head against the moist bark of the tree and closed his eyes.
"X2750," he said quietly lifting his wrist. "If anyone can hear this– if a single one of you has your ears on, please for the love of the collective, get me out of here. My ship won't respond to my beacon. My weapons... useless," he breathed. "My gut feeling is that these humans aren't human at all." He steadied himself. "I need to think my way out of this. No ship. Weapons are ineffective. They're faster than me. Somehow, they continue to track me despite the decoys and even invisibility. None of it seems to matter at all."
His eyes wandered skyward. It was dark enough that he could see his home star through the top of the trees. So close and yet so far. He wished more than anything he had never come. It wasn't worth whatever thrill he was seeking.
"X2751," logged Dinyl. "It must be their sense of smell. I cannot think of any other reason. If anyone happens to come across this frequency now or in the future... humans have a sense completely alien to us. As all senses not innate to one's own species, it is difficult to quantify; to define in certain terms. But anything in this universe that is tangible is certain to give off a certain smell. They can follow that smell. It'll lead them in a general direction toward whatever the source is, but they have difficulty pinpointing it. As far we're aware, concepts and philosophies do not give off a smell. But I'm starting to have my doubts about certain emotions... namely fear."
He took several deep breaths in an attempt to quell the terror inside of him. "If I can only conquer my fear. But humans and animals from Earth eat one another. Humans do not eat one another on 99% of occasions. But as I have said, these humans I chose to hunt with... they are different. And I can think of no grizzlier or demeaning fate than to be made their nourishment– to have one's own sacred flesh converted to ape waste. It frightens me to imagine it, so I wish to imagine it no further... however when one's own imagination is as real as the soil under one's feet..."
He trailed off. This wasn't productive. He was only scaring himself further. If fear was indeed a smell humans could follow, they would never lose track of him so long as he imagined their long glistening fangs– their sharpened claws rending his flesh from his bones. On his home planet, brute primal force overcoming science and tactics was a story everyone hated. He wasn't about to let that be the story of his demise. He pushed off of the tree and hurried further into the jungle, pressing the beacon for his ship over and over as he did.

"I don't know, Dinyl, that sounds dangerous. Our ships act funny on Earth sometimes. Not all the time, but enough that I wouldn't go out there. Our people have crashed there before. They don't give the bodies back. Is what you're planning on doing worth it?"

He should have heeded the advice. He knew in his many hearts that it was his own tragic arrogance that led him to this.

"If they get ahold of you, you're dead. They can't be reasoned with. They're still a tier 1 civilization, intergalactic law won't save you. They're basically a protected species. All we can do is ask for you and your ship back, but you know how that goes."

"Dammit all," the alien muttered to himself. He stopped to catch his breath and looked down at the device on his wrist. It seemed he was in the clear– not a single blip on the radar. He could hardly believe his luck. Through his labored breathing, he managed a laugh as he leaned against a tree.
"X2752. I've lost them. Against all odds, I believe I've lost them. Now I've got to put my brain to work. If I can circle back to the lodge, I can fashion an emitter out of their radio tower. It would require minimal modification, and I can probably reach my ship that way. In fact, if my ship is still unreachable then it has been destroyed somehow. In which case, it'll be more work getting back home. But this isn't undoable."
As soon as he finished his log and the words left his screen, the radar returned. A forest of red blips surrounded his position. Dread flooded him. He stared at it for several seconds as though hoping it would go away– that it would display something else. He lifted his eyes from the screen to see hungry glowing eyes in the darkened forest all around him. His shoulders fell. He couldn't fathom how they had surrounded him so quickly and so quietly.
But it didn't matter now.
"X2...753," he spoke in a defeated tone. "Never come to Earth. There is more to humans than we know... Far more."

I've just stumbled across something recently that has helped me explain the very uncomfortable, hollow, heavy feeling I get in my chest due to my depression.
I was looking into the term "Heartbreak" recently. I can't remember why, but I always used to think people would say it flippantly. Like it was just an over-dramatisation of what they were feeling. But in actual fact, it can be a real medical condition called "Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy".

"This heart condition is brought on by high levels of stress or extreme emotions".
I was seeing the correlation between someone experiencing heartbreak, and the feelings you can get from depression.
"But when you fall out of love, levels of oxytocin and dopamine drop, while at the same time there is an increase in levels of one of the hormones responsible for stress — cortisol."
As we know, depression gives you lower levels of Dopamine and Serotonin and I've been quite stressed out lately. So it's like I'm experiencing the hallmarks of "Heartbreak" without having been in a relationship. I've never had anyone explain why this feeling occurs, and I know many people experience this uncomfortable symptom, but the above article definitely helps shine some light on it.
It makes you wonder how this relates to why so many older men and women die so soon after their significant other passes on. Their loved one dies, and their heart literally breaks.
The connection between emotion and physical health has never so clearly been shown to me.

A bit of background, I have been unemployed since January due to the death of a family member, the completion of my associates degree, and having a baby.
I applied for a healthcare related office position, I received a call that ended up being a quick interview. I was told that because I couldn’t start until the beginning of July that I should reach out once I am ready to work.
I then received a phone call requesting an in person interview a couple of weeks later. I feel the interview went well but they didn’t have a position in mind for me seemingly until mid interview when the main interviewer remembered that one of their employees was going out on maternity leave so I could take her job temporarily. but a week and a half later I received an email saying they decided to go in a different direction. I asked if they would be willing to share if I could have improved anything but received no reply.
Now, about a week later I received a call asking me to take something called a PXT assignment (from what I can tell it’s a personality test). Seemingly still no position in mind.
I suppose I wanted to know if other people have encountered behavior similar to this and how it turned out or if these are red flags. A sort of what would you do / how should I be reacting to this situation as a whole? Or if you have any advice. Thank you!

I'm in the process of finishing my garage. Note that the pictures are of a carriage garage, but there's also an attached 2-car garage. The walls and cinderblock are painted, the floors are done, and I'm getting ready to install some storage and slat wall.
I've been putting off the lower wall finish, but now it's sticking out like a sore thumb.
The framing on the exterior walls juts out past the sheetrock atop the block foundation. The interior walls don't meet the cinder block perfectly, over-hanging by maybe 1/2".
The cinder block is painted so it looks fine, but I'm curious if anyone has ideas of how to cover up these exterior and interior wall transitions from foundation to framing/sheetrock?

I am understanding that using a Vermont registration while not living in Vermont can present a legal gray area. Tickets can be given in some areas for having an out of state registration, if you are living in it or using it in a state for a certain amount of time without registering it.
But I couldn't get to the bottom of this in my search - I have found a ton of guides on how to do a new registration with the Vermont loophole (which, again, people generally wisely use to get tagged as a motorhome so they can then register in their state of residence). But I haven't seen any guides on how to transfer registration, if you were already registered, to vermont.
I am assuming I do not need an odometer statement ? Would select "transfer" ; not fill out section 6 ; not pay tax ; not fill out 3b; and include a copy of the out of state registration.

This girl and I had been on 4 dates and everything was going well. We really enjoyed each others company and she told me she felt happy and relaxed around me, and I felt the same about her.
At the end of our 4th date we start to hookup for the first time (we had only had brief kisses the previous two dates). A few minutes into the kissing she starts to critique my kissing. She does it by asking “do you know how to French kiss?”. Now I’m not saying I’m the world’s best or most experienced kisser but my kissing style hadn’t been an issue with past partners.
I’m of course open to constructive criticism and learning what my partner prefers, but I felt like the way she delivered the line was a bit insensitive and it threw me off my game and I got in my head. I did ask her how she preferred it and she responded a little frustrated and said “I can’t teach you how to do it”. She eventually gave me the advice to “not move your lips and just move your tongue”. I had never really done it that way before but I tried it that way and apparently that wasn’t what she was looking for either. I tried to diffuse the situation by saying we would work on it and figure out what worked for us. She responded saying “no, you’ll work on it”. She tried to say it softly but the comment didn’t make me feel great because I felt like I was genuinely trying to understand how she preferred it and I felt like I just got back a lot of blame and frustration from her when a more gentler approach would have been better.
We eventually decided not to use much tongue when we kissed and she said she enjoyed that better. But later when she was touching me through my underwear I wasn’t getting aroused because I was still rattled by the earlier exchange. I told her that I was still in my head over the kissing critique and we decided to stop. I went home and the next day she texted me saying she felt connected to me emotionally but didn’t think we were compatible physically. She was nice enough in the breakup text but I am still really bothered by her tone and her general attitude during the criticism. I took all the blame for the situation in my response and told her I had some anxieties I was trying to work through.
I didn’t tell her how the delivery of the critique bothered me but I wish I would have so that we could have talked it through. She was always very sweet to me before this so it was very surprising that her tone wasn’t gentler. I know it wasn’t her intent to hurt my feelings but I do wish I had let her know how it made me feel. I initially wanted to ask for a second chance to see if we could establish the physical connection but now I’m wondering if her handling of the situation was a red flag or if I am just being too sensitive.
Was there a better way for her to handle giving me the critique? Was there anything I should have done differently?
It’s been about a month since we last spoke but the interaction still bothers me and is making me feel like I should have stood up for myself and been open about the fact that I was uncomfortable.
