2023.06.10 19:25 gd_timez My friend loves nit-picking other people’s faults I don’t know what to do

Hii guys I hope you can lend me some of your insights! Thank you
So yeah basically my friend loves nit-picking on other peoples faults. I’m not even sure if they are faults? For example, she would talk about how old dated someone’s IG post/story is. She would bring people up from university and say that even if they’re so rich they don’t have style. She talks about how our peers always go to the same “boring” places. The list goes on and on.
At first, I didn’t mind it and just laughed it off thinking that was the end of it but it just went on. She always had something to say about someone. It seems obsessive? At the end of it, she would say that they’re not like us (pertaining to our friend group, we’re a group of 4) or that shes sure that people admire her and the things she does.
I just don’t know how to tell her or how to respond. Sometimes I insinuate that hey maybe its time for some growth but she just laughs. Please note that aside from this one thing, I would say that she’s a great friend. She’s very loving, supportive, genuine, and loyal. That’s why I’m torn or lost about how to move forward. I’m concerned is this coming from a place of pain?

2023.06.10 19:21 JamelSkywalker With the 20th pick, who's your target?

As we approach the draft in just a couple of weeks, a lingering question will come to an end: who's going to be our first round pick. So for fun's sake, I'm asking you: which player should we target with the 20th pick? It's obviously not as simple as selecting within the top 5, but would love to hear where you're at! Cheers

2023.06.10 19:17 GinNJuicyFruit Tampa Bay Bucs Rookie Dart Throws

Many have already done their rookie drafts and others still are upcoming. I have been looking at some of the later round dart throws and noticed there was quite a bit of Day 3/UDFA talent brought in by the Bucs that I liked in the pre draft process.
Trey Palmer, Sean Tucker, Rakim Jarrett, and Ronnie Brown are all intriguing options to me.
The WR room is obviously set with their 1-3 for this season, but injuries can always occur and I think one of these players may be that injury away from a significant amount of snaps. Additionally, Mike Evans is going to be 30 going into this season and on the final year of his contract. I just don’t know if he fits into their timeline going forward.
The RB room is being led currently by Rachaad White, and they are hopeful that their investments into the OLine and new OC can bring out the best in him. But what if he really is just a 3rd down back? What if the room is more wide open due to them looking for a back that can succeed in the Shanahan wide zone scheme they are looking to implement? Could a rookie like Tucker or Brown steal the touches in what may turn into a lost season as the Bucs look as they may be in contention for a top 3-5 pick in next years draft?
I think this is one of the teams this year where some of the these day three/UDFA players might actually have a chance to earn some reps.
What are the communities thoughts here around some of these dart throws on the Bucs?
Are you targeting any of these players in the later rounds of your drafts or are they waiver pick ups you maybe put on your taxi?

2023.06.10 18:55 ZarthanFire Trip Report - 15 Days in Osaka, Himeji, Nara, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Tokyo, and Fujiyoshida!

This subreddit has been an amazing resource for my solo trip prep over the last few months so now it's my turn to give back. I did not have a set budget in mind since I save diligently for my trips. I am fairly well-traveled, a late 30s, solo traveler. This was my first time in Japan and my goals were a mixture of eating, exploring history, enjoying some theme parks, and enjoying experiences that only Japan could offer.
Total USD Spend: 17 days (2 travel days) came out to about $4200 USD total: * Flight: $1050 * Accommodations: $1400 * Food and Snacks: $1000 * Transportation (IC card, buses, trains): $250 * Theme Park & Novelty Experiences: $400 * Misc (souvenirs, shopping): $200 I typically budget out about $5K USD for my trips and Japan was definitely on the higher side of the budget, but again, I splurged on some fantastic restaurants, premiere entry at Universal Studios Osaka, along with numerous day trips. As others have mentioned here, I also averaged between 25K-30K steps a day. I’m in decent shape but walking 10-15 miles everyday definitely took its toll and my body shut down for a day.
Day 0: Landed in Osaka in the late afternoon and ended up wandering Dotonbori for a few hours since my hotel was located a block away. Ended up eating some very mediocre ramen at a stand in Dotonbori which was pretty disappointing, but the carbs were enough to knock me out. Day 1: Woke up early to walk around Dontobori at 5am and then headed out to few unique temples, including Namba Yasaka Jinja. Hopped onto the subway to enter Ueno Sky Tower, and overall, it was meh, I didn’t stay long just taking a few pictures and walked around Ueno for a few hours before heading to the Pokemon Cafe in Shinsaibashi. As others have noted, the food was very mediocre, but it was a fun experience nonetheless. Spent the rest of the evening getting drinks in Dotonbori before calling it a night.
Day 2: A full day at Universal Studios Japan to experience Super Nintendo World. I splurged on the express passes that gave me full access to a bunch of rides. SNW is pretty fucking awesome and I had a blast riding the Yoshi and Mario Kart rides, all the while taking taking in the atmosphere. The premiere pass also gave me access to a few additional rides including Harry Potter, Doraemon VR, and Jurassic Park. Had a late dinner at Kyushu Ramen getting their famous chashu ramen and it did not disappoint.
Day 3: Spent most of the day exploring Kuromon Ichiba Market, the local malls, and Dotonbori trying some street food. Went back to my hotel room and just relaxed for the rest of the day since jet lag was still bothering me. Watched some sumo matches on random Japanese tv before calling it a night.
Day 4: Took a day trip to Himeji to see the Himeji Castle. What a fantastic piece of history! I spent hours just taking in the sites and the nearby garden also highly recommended. Afterward, I had my first taste of Kobe beef in the form of a beef bowl at Kushiyaki Kobe Beef. Fantastic little hole-in-the-wall place with some really nice people working the counter. Took the train from Himeji directly to Nara where I was planning to stay the night. Day 5: Spent the entire day playing with the thousands of deer and checking out some local temples, including Todai-ji. I didn't do anything in Nara that hadn't been mentioned enough times here, but as others have said, a day trip or one day is more than enough time in the area. Took a late train to Kyoto. Day 6: Woke up in the early morning to beat the crowds to enjoy Fushimi Inari. Hiked the entire loop (about 2-3 hours) with only a fraction of the crowds, enjoyed some macha soft serve at the peak of the hill, and took my time going back down right rwhen the army of tourists and tour groups arrived. Grabbed an overly expensive Kobe beef stick from one of the food stalls by the temple gates and then spent an hour at a cute coffee shop called Rickshaw Cafe just people watching before grabbing an early dinner at Ramen Sen-no-Kaze. The food was solid, but it took 90 minutes to get a table. Not worth it and in hindsight I would have left.
Day 7: Woke up early again to check out the highly overrated Arashimyama bamboo forest. It was pretty underwhelming, but I did get a few nice photos before the crowds arrived. Strolled through the park and really enjoyed walking along the Katsura River seeing the catfish waiting to be fed and seeing the fishing boats tied up. A very tranquil place. After the nice long stroll, I walked back-and-forth the Togetsukyo Bridge and Kimono Forest (meh). The highlight of the morning was really Tenryu-Ji and the amazing zen garden. After a few hours taking in the peacefulness and silence, took the city bus to Kinkaku-ji, and the crowds were in full swing. Still totally worth seeing in person although it didn’t last very long. Day 8: A full day experiencing the Philosopher’s Path on a gorgeous sunny day. Too sunny since I got some pretty bad sunburns! I visited too many amazing temples, including Kiyomizo-dera, along with old Gion, although I thought the area was bit overhyped. I preferred the smaller, more peaceful temples away from the mass of tourists. Some of my favorites during my day exploring old Kyoto included Eikan-do, a more secluded temple up in the hills, Nanzen-Ji, with its beautiful aqueduct, and just walking the streets aimlessly for a few hours. Went to Nishiki Market and ate some amazing oysters at Daiyasu. If you love oysters, this is the spot to try it! Spent too much money on oysters and decided to go cheap and ate at Kura Sushi. The food was mediocre by Japanese standards, but blows away the quality and cost of the Kura Sushi restaurants in my hometown of Los Angeles.
Day 9: Took an early morning train to Kanazawa. Enjoyed my first ekiben while taking in the sights from the comfort of the Thunderbird Limited Express. Spent the rest of the day visiting the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (meh) and Kenrou-ken, probably the most beautiful garden in the Kanda province. Wrapped up the day by visiting the D.T Suzuki Museum and wow, the tranquil pool area was amazing. Do yourself a favor and stand on the corner and just stare at the water. You’ll feel like the entire world is moving along on a plane and you’re the one that is frozen in place. It was pretty trippy. Ate well at Mori More Sushi Omicho and stopped by the Pokemon Center to pick up the exclusive Pikachu Kimono figure only available in the Kanazawa store.
Day 10: Torrential rain the entire day but I powered throughit with my trusty umbrella. Enjoyed breakfast and snacks at the Omicho Market, enjoying a tuna-don at one of the stalls, fresh uni, and more oysters. Not cheap but fresh! Walked around the Higashi Chaya District, doing a bit of window shopping and ate some gold leaf macha soft serve at Kaikaro, spending more time people watching. Walked around the Kanazawa Castle Park in all its empty glory as well as the Oyama Shrine. The castle was pretty underwhelming esp. after seeing Himeji so I probably would have skipped it in hindsight. Wrapped up the day visiting the Naga-machi District, probably my favorite part of Kanazawa. Had more sushi at Sushi Rekireki Omicho, an enjoyable omakase.
Day 11: Took the Shinkansen to Tokyo eating the most expensive ekiban I could find, and spent the rest of the entire day in Asakusa in Tokyo. Walked around Senso-ji, had a few beers in Hoppy Street, and finally tried Ichiran. Called it an early day since I would be doing DisneySea in the early morning.
Day 12: Took the express bus from Tokyo Skytree to DisneySea. Thanks to the early forecast of rain, the park was barely 50% full? The longest wait for most rides was under 20 minutes so I was lucky enough to ride everything at least once. My meals consisted of a bunch of unique Dsney parki food: gyoza hot dogs, alien mochi, Mike watermelon bread, etc. Stayed until the fireworks and went straight back to the hotel and crashed. That was a 40K step day!
Day 13: Visited Akihabara, spending way too much money on crane games, browsing retro games, and looking at figures. Headed to Shibuya to eat breakfast for lunch at A Happy Pancake (meh). Went to the Nintendo Store in the PARCO mall, only to be disappointed to find out that all of the Nintendo World store t-shirts were sold out. Actually everything semi-interesting was sold out. Went up to Shibuya Sky to watch the sunset, spending a few hours just watching the day slowly turn into night. Did the Scramble a few times and then headed to Shinjuku where I’d be located for the last few days.
Day 14: Another torrential rainstorm sadly ruined my plans of visiting Shinjuku Gyoen, Meiji Jingo, and Harajuku. Maybe next time. I was hoping to buy Tokyo Giants tickets but they were all sold out so I ended up going to the Tokyo National Museum. I won’t lie, I was pretty bored, and in hindsight I wish I went to the neighboring National Museum of Nature and Science instead. After strolling Ueno Park in the rain, I was craving tonkatsu and googled Tonkatsu Yamabe. Good decision as it was the best tonkatsu I had in Tokyo. Went to a nearby Taito Game Station wasting more money on crane games before heading back to Shinjuku. The area is insane and in hindsight, I would probably pick somewhere like Shibuya or Ueno, somewhere slightly more chill. Day 15: One of my favorite days in Tokyo! Teamlabs Planets lives up to the hype but ONLY if you can get first admission at 9am. It was glorious to be among the first people in the exhibits as I could take in experience the way it was intended. There were only a few people in each room giving each space such a great, peaceful, and chill vibe. Headed to Ginza to the Michelin-rated Sushi Toyama, where I had a chance to finally experience bluefin toro (worth it!). Probably the most expensive lunch ever but it was quite the experience. A sunny and beautiful day, I bought a bunch of souvenirs and clothes (a 12-story Uniqlo with its own coffee shop, Muji Ginza, Ginza Six), checked out my favorite Toy Story in Japan, Hakuhinkan Toy Park, intricate stationary stores like Itoya, and went to a very popular Ginza Starbucks to people watch. Spent the evening in Shinjuku exploring Golden Gai getting swarmed by Nigerian dudes. Wanted to try a hole-in-wall ramen spot in the area but the line was stupid long so I ended up just going to Kyushu Ramen and was satisfied enough. A good day.
Day 16: With the break in clouds the day before, I decided to call an audible and set up a last minute day trip to Mount Fuji. Took an express bus from Shinjuku to Fushiyoshida and got dropped off in front of Chureito Pagoda. It was cloudy for most of the day, but for the last several hours I saw Mount Fuji in all its glory. It was a gray day but no complaints — it was nice to cross another bucket list item from the list.
Wow, this was much longer than I anticipated. Well if you got this far, feel free to ask any questions! In the meantime, I'll be planning my next trip to Japan soon!

2023.06.10 18:46 PukaBearx How to find your life purpose?

Hey guys,
I feel like all my life I've just gone with the flow, got into a career in finance (university, further qualifications etc) and I don't have any hobbies or talents really. My upbringing wasn't easy, I moved around a lot and moved abroad and my mental health has always been a problem (I understand people have it way worse).
I'm 28 and I've decided I want to change that. I love animals, the environment, mental health, art, photography, fashion, yoga.. basically this kind of stuff, however I have never pursued any of them (well not properly, I've dabbled) as I was led to believe that only a high paying office job was the way to go. I've been doing it for 3 years now and the thought of this being it is awful.
I'm also not naive, I know we all have to work and I don't have savings and I don't come from a wealthy family and I get that money makes the world go round. Is this unrealistic?
What should I do? Does any one have any experience in changing their career? Also, how do I pick something? There's so much I want to do... it's just picking something.. any suggestions?
Also, I'm also aware of the fact that I'm not naturally good at my current job. I just try very hard. Even though I haven't highly pursued the other hobbies I've mentioned above I feel like there's more natural talent there if you get what I mean?
Also, I travelled for a year and worked in hospitality and loved it, I like being on my feet and I also do not like the stress of the financial sector.. (not saying all jobs don't have stress, but if you have worked in finance you'll know the type of stress I mean)
Also I understand that 28 is still really young. I lost someone close to me a year ago, quite suddenly, and it's really made me realise life is short.

2023.06.10 18:45 Few_Mulberry5372 What do you think the best and worst case scenario for Houston is this summer?

I think we all know that this is a make or break offseason for the Rockets. They finished Phase 1 of the rebuild through tanking for top picks but now is the time to put together a winning culture and take the next step forward
They already nailed the first (and probably most important step) in coaching by hiring Ime Udoka. They can literally do nothing this summer and I feel confident in our group being way better, but there are things they can do that are even worse than doing nothing
Best Case: Sign or trade for a role player PG like Chris Paul or Mike Conley, pick up some vets that play winning basketball like Bruce Brown to surround the young core with, draft Amen Thompson at 4 (assuming Scoot or Miller don't drop) and set yourself up to have a Magic or OKC type breakout year off the back of your young guys
Worst Case: The go all in approach. Tilman is tired of bleeding money for 3 years and decides he wants to win now. They sign Harden to a 4 year max and trade off the 4th pick plus someone like Jalen or Jabari for Siakam. They then overpay for a guy like Middleton to create a mid 3 that will be a first round out for the next 5 years and destroy everything that the Rockets have built for the past 3 years

2023.06.10 18:42 Own-Good8377 I feel useless

So today i started the WSET level one. Im 23 years old and still in university and i joined the WSET course because i want to learn more about wine. But everything about the wine tasting process went pretty much completely over my head. The instructor was talking about vanilla and berries and soil and prune flavors/notes etc but i could not pick up any of that. And apparently i was the only one to do so because pretty much everyone detected these things before the instructor said anything. So what is that ? Is my sense of smell and taste that awful ? Do i simply need to get more accustomed to these scents and flavours on their own so i can then detect them in wine ? Or am i just dumb ?

2023.06.10 18:05 Programer-9301 The outerverse is dying

My name is qazz and I'm here to warn you of the eternal eaters. The eternal eaters are a species of creatures that are almost unstoppable, they seem to be untouchable, to most species and have traveled through multiple multiverse and have devoured everything their, they seem to reproduce by biting any creature/object and that creature will turn into them.
I am the only few left of my species, after we first learned about the eternal eaters we first thought that we could just kill them with are advanced weapons but, they just phased through. Are weapons quickly turned into them. We then attempted to use other creatures to fight them but, we only strengthen the eternal eater's numbers
Are species has the ability to absorb abilities from other creatures, infinite stamina, regeneration, and the ability to adapt to any situation.
My species then tried fighting them but every 1 eternal eater killed cost us 45 of my species.
But many of us tried to adapt to them, not allowing are home to be destroyed many of us adapted to be immune to the eternal eaters but they lost their freedom and where unable to move, talk, or eat.
A company from my species was able to create a sword that could instantly kill the eternal eaters in one touch but, they wouldn't allow any one to recreate the recipe. The sword required someone to meet a few requirements. One of those was a normal blood pressure, if they failed they would instantly die. John came to pick up the sword and instantly melted as he screamed help me. A person named Jennifer did the test and completed the first part successfully but the second part required them to not be overweight. Jennifer failed this part and started melting but she adapted to this and became heat resistant. Instead of dying from melting, her bodie's skin peeled off and her legs exploded. Jennifer regenerated but then the effects got worse and worse until she died.
People refused to do the tests anymore for billions of years. So I built a few teleportation devices but, too many people wanted to leave at once. So the devices exploded. The eternal eaters had eaten 90% of our universe. People committed suicide because of the high levels of stress felt knowing that we had approximately 5 days to live before the eternal eaters consumed everything. I created a suit allowing my to explore universes, multiverses, outerverses, and even metaverses.
I traveled to multiverse to multiverse trying to find anywhere they couldn't go or find me but, they kept coming back. I even tried outerverse to outerverse but they always found away.
I've warned all of these universes and they have all failed.
However your race is similar to mine and with my knowledge we may be able to stop them

In the grim and dark future there is not only war but also a depiction of the LGBTQ+.
Here are some examples of how non-heterosexuality is depicted in stories and novels devoted to the Warhammer 40k universe.
  1. “Shadow Play” by Rob Sanders (Black Library Weekender Anthology). Lelith Hesperax (my most favourite character, by the way) was accompanied by a female courtesan. According to inquisitor Czevak “from their body language the dark eldar were lovers, with the second the seeming senior of the pair.” (Lelith was supposed to be senior).
  2. “Menshad Korum” by C.S. Goto. Yhuki was Lelith Hesperax’s servant who obviously admired her mistress. “Lelith swept passed her servant, her long hair caressing Yhuki's naked shoulders and fanning into a wake behind her. Yhuki fought to resist the need to touch the queen's legs as they slid through the eddying air at her side.” It is a very atmospheric scene. Later Yhuki wasn’t able to resist temptation and “her hand slid across the base of the throne and her fingers crawled onto the skin of Lelith's exquisite calf, picking their way between the complex straps of black psychoplastic that snaked their way up the queen's legs. Lelith let out a breath of pleasure and reached down to Yhuki, drawing her face up along her body.”
Lelith is more than likely bisexual because she is said to be an occasional courtesan of Overlord Asdrubael Vect. Besides, Drukhari explore all arts of pleasure including heterosexual intercourses. And it should be noted that they embody the worst stereotypes attributed to LGBTQ+. But it isn’t supposed to be a statement about non-heterosexuality, it’s a reflexion over the horror of the 40k universe.
  1. “Fulgrim” by Graham McNeill. Bequa Kynska was a musician and composer of note taken under Primarch Fulgrim’s patronage. She seduced both men and women and wasn’t used to denial.
  2. “Titandeath” by Guy Haley. Legio Titanicus Solaria, “The Imperial Hunters” is an all-women polyamorous warrior unit which is mostly but not exclusively lesbian. Esha Ani Mohana became romantically involved with Legio Vulpa Princeps Terent Harrtek during the Great Crusade. She became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter Abhani Lus Mohana.
  3. “A Thousand Sons” by Graham McNeill. There is a lesbian couple (Camille Shivani, a remembrancer and Chaiya Parvati, a woman of Prospero).
I haven’t yet read all the books devoted to the Warhammer 40k universe but there must be some other LGBTQ+characters.

2023.06.10 17:55 Right-Championship19 Which job offer should I choose (Busser/Food Runner vs. Valet Attendant)?

Hi everyone,
I'm struggling to decide which job I should commit to. Some context, I already have a part time position as an Assistant Librarian (a little over 18 hours a week, pays $18.97/hr, and unionized, love this job!) and I'm looking for a second job as I'm saving to transfer into a 4-year university (aiming for Fall 2024) and planning on buying a car (car loan) by the end of June. I recently got a job offer for a valet parking assistant position at a Casino/Resort Hotel (Bally's) paying $6.45/hr + tips and has great hours that compliment my current job. I accepted (haven't submitted any paperwork or started onboarding yet) but not 3 days later I receive another offer from the same Casino/Resort Hotel for a bussefood runner position paying $10hr + plus tip out (the manager said they gather the tips in an envelope, and we pick them up the following day/shift. I've never worked in food service so not sure if this is a good system or not?), however, the hours are pretty rough on my schedule since the restaurant has interesting hours (they are closed on Mon-Tues and then Wed-Sat 4-11pm and 10am-3pm Sundays); haven't accepted yet. I have no idea which route to go as I've never worked in either industry/services and I was hoping for my second job to not cause me too much stress since I'm also a prospective student. I've interviewed for both and got good impressions on both managers. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! I have to decide by Wednesday xD. Heellp.

2023.06.10 17:53 helenalena [Subreddit status update] The aftermath of u/spez's AMA, reddit's and r/NBASpurs plans for the foreseeable future

First of all, thanks for being patient with us. Our decision to shut the subreddit down for 48 hours was positively received (93% upvoted) by the community save for a couple of redditors. I've devoted a good chunk of my time to write this update to keep you informed before shite goes down, so I hope you'll read this post in its entirety.

How the AMA went

Steve Huffman or spez is reddit's current CEO and he held a disasterclass of an AMA yesterday. He ignored the users' most popular and upvoted concerns and cherry-picked from the lot, answering a whopping total of 14 questions.
He slandered Apollo's developer yet again, claiming Christian was two-faced with his communication privately and publicly but could not come up with any evidence. Steve then proceeded to lie about working with other third-party app developers when in truth, they were repeatedly IGNORED, like robocalls and Nigerian princes.
He also inadvertently revealed he was using canned responses, forgetting to remove the "A:" prepend after replying to a blind user... only to edit it afterwards. However! Make no mistake, this is a huge improvement over editing other users' comments by modifying their database entries. We all start somewhere :')
The AMA promised a whole lot of nothing that isn't immediately available to any of us, and the plan to charge outrageous prices for API access is running full steam ahead, like the Spurs' race for seis.

NBASpurs moderation, bots and you

With their API pricing model, this subreddit's game and post-game thread bot will be affected, particularly the box scores.
The free tier allows 100 or 10 queries per minute depending on authentication access. The bot is used by half of existing team subreddits to my knowledge, but might be decommissioned or heavily modified to stay within the free tier limits. Reducing the API call rate will render the feature useless as box scores in essence, provide real-time data, else they don't offer any substantial value to anyone.
Quoting the post Steve wrote, developers can contact reddit through a support ticket if their bots require access to the Data API above the free limits, but bigger developers have been ignored for months and months on end, so it doesn't exactly inspire confidence that they will get a free upgrade to a different tier. If push comes to shove, we'll replace it with another bot that creates game threads only, sans any other details.
Other bots that I'm currently developing will not be affected by the API pricing changes, but I'm on the fence whether it's worth it at this stage. I'm seriously thinking about quitting after the 30th. I know I just returned to publicly moderating this community, but this is not the reddit I've grown up and fell in love with. I'm 31 and I've been here since I was 15. I've seen how the site's quality went down year after year. By the time the IPO comes around, reddit will just be like any other social media website. And that's a damn shame.
u/SquandasNutCheese is also undecided at this point, and may leave if things go terribly awry.
There's also a possibility that Reddit admins might step in, remove the active mod team and replace it with users who align more with their interests. That being said, I can promise another WFSN surprise if they walk back on the changes, so you better support this protest because you're in for a real treat.

How you can support the protest better, by order of magnitude/effectiveness

If you can't help but visit reddit during the blackout because doomscrolling is your favourite pastime and you're maidenless

Elsewhere on reddit

Note: We're still sticking to the original schedule to avoid painting a target on our backs, plus coordination will result to an extremely sharp drop of reddit traffic instead of a sloping/downward trending curve. Making a statement, you know the works.

Outside reddit

I want to delete my account. I have had it with these mother-fucking snakes on this mother-fucking plane!

The future of the subreddit

We don't have any recommendations for a reddit alternative yet as we haven't tested any of moderators and users proffered (Lemmy, Mastodon, kbin social), but let us know if it interests you. You can also browse RedditAlternatives only to find out that admins banned one of the newly established subreddits detailing how to move to kbin. Shocking development, amirite?
Finally, you can vote to extend the blackout or re-open the subreddit through Strawpoll. All moderators prefer to the idea of extending the blackout until the Mod Council, third-party developers and reddit come to an agreement that will be honoured to a T, but this community belongs to everyone who's participated in it, old or new. I'm counting on you to vote WISELY.

Go Spurs Go! Por Vida!

With love, xx, till the butter flies

2023.06.10 17:43 New_AccountNew_Start 35/M/UK - Retired, Law degree, very opinionated, I can get some mileage out of pretty much any topic you'd like to chat about.

First off I'm retired because I inherited money and it's enough to last out my lifetime. I didn't actually do a real job and work until I got a gold watch or anything. ;)
Might sound great but just remember I'm the sole surviving member of my family, everything just funneled to me. If you have a loving family you're a richer person than I will ever be.
I honestly did the law degree just for fun and in case I ever need to fall back on a job, and I'm looking into going to university again at some point soon.
With my mental health issues and lack of a support network life is sometimes a bit of a struggle, I spend my days mostly watching YouTube and reading up about random things online, keeping fit, playing video games, etc. I spend a lot of time on the internet and I'm a bit too fond of distractions.
I have dreams to write a book and create a video game, which I'm sort of working on. Progress is slow but I have plenty of ideas.
I'm looking make a close long-term friend, and I really enjoy calls so building up to those would be ideal.
When it comes to chatting to people on here, people tend to find me engaging at first because I'm smart but I rub them up the wrong way quickly. I have a bunch of extremely controversial opinions and I just can't help but let people know them. I'm not going to agree with people just to be polite.
I'll list a few. Myers Briggs personality types are silly, SSRIs are questionable at best, Breaking Bad is lame, identity politics are stupid, Elon Musk is a conman (even Shkreli is cooler), Jordan Peterson and Joe Rogan are stupid, Netflix is trashy, Beavis and Butt-head was one of the most sharply written shows, 100 gecs are awesome, Noam Chomsky is the smartest man alive, narrative fiction can never outdo sports for drama, MF DOOM was the greatest rapper ever, TED Talks are rubbish (except Sam Hyde), Rocko's Modern Life is the best animated show ever, 90s Eurodance is amazing, and modern life is some kind of cognitive dissonance simulator.
I love chatting to people from all walks of life and all different schools of thought. Free to tell me if you strongly disagree with any of the above, I've found you can learn the most from people who don't think the same as you.
Feel free to pick me up on any of these, or ask me what I think about any topic you would like to discuss! Or just say hi, whatever works. Haha.

2023.06.10 17:39 garylucy Help me understand -OR- more Wiseman spilt milk

I hate piling on the kid, but is the general consensus this whole painful interlude is mostly due to Lakob? Difficult to imagine Bob swinging and missing so hard on his own.
Also: never mind who we should’ve drafted instead, here’s a more painful thing to ponder: who do you think we could’ve gotten in a trade for the pick? Like does anyone remember any rumors at the time of teams ringing Myers’ phone, looking to deal?

2023.06.10 17:33 SkyePine The curious case of Gate anime and how its premise impacted its fanfictions.

Gate or Gate: Thus the Japanese Self-Defense Force Fought in Their Land is an anime that was mildly popular during its release and recieved some attention for its premise of fantasy vs modern millitary. Despite the mixed reception, the anime did tickle the imagination of many viewers and gather a rather healthy number of followers in fanfiction spaces.
During my early days of fanfiction, I randomly pick a fandom in FF.net and choose which fandom to check out. One day, I just picked Gate at random and I noticed that many of them followed the same format of the show. A gate appeared in the middle of a city, monsters charge in and kill some people, the home forces fight back, and then the home forces take the fight to the fantasy world with the home world crushing the fantasy invaders. It's the same format and while it is expected, it does feel alien to me when browsing its fanfics.
While tropes and patterns are common in fanfic spaces, it is still noticable that some people will focus on different fics such as different AUs, Character Studies, Shipping Fics, Crack Fics etc. However, over my time of browsing AO3 and FF.net, the fics are focused on the main plot and smut (the universal constant of fanfic).
Now, I'm not saying its bad. In fact, non crossover stuff do actually re write the show or adds some more parts that the original author glossed over in their original work like having deeper intricacies in the government side. However, the funnier side comes up when it comes to crossovers.
In the show, the fantasy army got destroyed by the JSDF hard. Now think for a second, what do you think will happen if they fought this Japanesse Army. It feels funny how a medieval army with some orcs and dragons got faced of with advanced mechs, alien technology, or anything not invented until 1000 years later. Its like the Homelander vs Everyone before it was cool except its more underwhelming since fantasy Empire is made to be a jobber in the first place.
I think Gate is one of those rare instances where it inspired its fandom to write for its premise alone and not much on anything else. It set up an intriguing question that is not explored much despite crossovers being a thing. Like seriously, a lot of worlds are just welded together or someone getting into a portal but they never gave enough chance to see how two different worlds interact with each other politically and culturally. Gate gave people some oppurtunity for that and gave some room as well for the fans to make 10,000 word fanfics of their favorite worlds stomping some weak civilization without remorse.
It made the fandom stand out for me personally. Its just intriguing to see how different people put their own spin on something established. Kinda like in Familiar of Zero fics where the bully guy always got crushed by everyone in the multiverse. Its funny and kinda sad how much that guy suffers in every fic in various ways.
