Long the subject of rhetoric, migrants have now become props in political theater

A long-reliable political playbook of highlighting immigration in election season has been escalated by Govs. Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis.
For five months, Gov. Greg Abbott bused migrants to Democrat-led cities to draw attention to the number of people arriving at the Texas border.
He began with Washington, D.C., then expanded the busing to New York and Chicago. At least 11,000 migrants have been removed from the state, by all accounts voluntarily.

But an attempt by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to deploy the same tactics last week took the issue to another level, when the state flew planes to Texas, allegedly lured migrants onto the flights by promising jobs, housing and services and a free trip to Boston, and then left those migrants in Martha’s Vineyard, an island resort town about 100 miles away. Three of those migrants have now sued DeSantis in federal court.

In one way, Abbott and DeSantis are following a familiar playbook: Find ways to put immigration front and center in election season to take advantage of populist backlash. But some say the transports have brought the country’s political discourse to a new low by using migrants as props in political theater, and not merely subjects of rhetorical attack.

“To me, this is just really crass manipulation of people. It does speak to our values,” said Jim Harrington, the retired founder of the Texas Civil Rights Project who has worked on immigration issues since 1973. “The idea that you could play with people in the way he did.”

Abbott’s office said Texas played no role in the flying of migrants to Massachusetts. But it has caught similar backlash for its recent push to send migrants in buses to Vice President Kamala Harris’ home in Washington — a stunt that Harris is unlikely ever to have seen, given that the vice president’s residence is within an 80-acre scientific and military compound, the Naval Observatory.
“She’s the border czar, and we felt that if she won’t come down to see the border, if President Biden will not come down and see the border, we will make sure they see it firsthand,” Abbott said. “There’s more where that came from.”
In November, Abbott is seeking a third term, and DeSantis a second. Politicians have frequently used immigrants around election time. In 1994, California Gov. Pete Wilson ran ads depicting migrants crossing the border during his reelection campaign. More recently, Donald Trump’s successful presidential run in 2016 began with his denouncing Mexican immigrants as “criminals,” “drug dealers” and “rapists.” Abbott himself ramped up his attacks on “sanctuary cities” in 2017, the year before his first reelection campaign.

But while those efforts depicted and discussed the immigrants, the use of actual migrants themselves has disturbed scholars and observers who see it as just the latest in a series of collapsing norms that are eroding American democracy.

Donald F. Kettl, professor emeritus and former dean at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, said the latest transports represent a “dramatic escalation in the use of immigrants as a political tool and a political symbol.

“One of the things that’s happened for sure is that immigrants as human beings — the notion that they have needs or problems they’re trying to escape and their aspirations to create a new home in the U.S. — has been pushed aside by the idea to create a mega symbol and use them as pawns that are being moved,” Kettl said.

“It’s a truly awful way to treat human beings and it’s an effort for sure to push the needs of human beings aside to try to score political points.”

Jennifer Mercieca, a Texas A&M professor who researches political rhetoric, said the transfer of migrants to a political opponent’s jurisdiction follows a rhetorical tactic called “reification” where people are treated as physical objects whose feelings don’t count.

“There’s no concern in the plan for the migrants and their well-being and their welfare,” she said. “It’s, ‘how can I use these migrants to score a political point against my opponent?’”

Abbott and DeSantis have said that they want to force Democratic officials, starting with President Joe Biden, to take action. But Mercieca said that is belied by the execution of the programs without any proposed solutions.

“These aren’t about policy solutions,

but instead they are about generating political spectacle. They are about creating dramatic events or ‘pseudo events’ that have to be covered,” she said. “They gotta stick it to the other side. They gotta show that they’re tough. They gotta have victory.”

Those “pseudo events” are aimed at controlling the narrative as both governors seek reelection and an opportunity to grow their name recognition, possibly in anticipation of a 2024 presidential run, Kettl said.
The polls show why that might be advantageous for Abbott. Over the summer, much of the political discourse in Texas focused on the school shooting in Uvalde and the overturning of Roe v. Wade. A recent University of Texas/Texas Politics Project poll found that more Texans trust Abbott’s 2022 challenger Beto O’Rourke on abortion issues — and they are evenly split on the issue of gun violence. On border security and immigration, on the other hand, Abbott holds a 12-percentage-point advantage.
But Mercieca also noted a change in how far politicians are willing to go to get their point across and how much the public is willing to tolerate.
“A stunt like what Abbott or DeSantis has done would have made zero sense 10 years ago, 15 years ago and 20 years ago,” she said. “That wouldn’t have resonated with a more general audience. But today’s audience loves that.”
That’s partially because cable news has become hyperpartisan, pressuring politicians to take dramatic and even extreme action to get attention.

“It’s a vicious cycle,” she said. “They’ve radicalized the audience that has in turn radicalized them.”

The movement of migrants has also drawn comparisons to painful parts of U.S. history. As news of the Florida flights spread across Massachusetts, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library published a tweet comparing the effort to the “reverse Freedom Rides” of the 1960s.
“To embarrass Northern liberals and humiliate Black people, southern White Citizens Councils started their so-called ‘Reverse Freedom Rides,’ giving Black people one-way tickets to northern cities with false promises of jobs, housing, and better lives,” the library’s account tweeted.
But those jobs and opportunities did not exist and instead left the Black travelers stranded away from their homes.
This week, PBS broadcast the documentary filmmaker Ken Burns’ latest project, “The U.S. and the Holocaust,” which chronicles America’s refusal to change restrictive immigration quotas to help refugees, even as millions of people fled Europe before and during the Holocaust.
Harrington said the use of migrants to score political points shows a new “callousness” in how Texans view immigrants. Just 21 years ago, a Republican-led Texas Legislature approved a law to allow undocumented youth who grew up in the state to pay in-state tuition at public universities. Following the escalation of the migrant movements this month, no Republican elected official has spoken out, nor have major business or civil leaders.
“A lot of people are sitting around talking about this and bemoaning it, but where is the leadership that helped shape and form our humane response as a democracy? Where is it?” he said. “We are so fractured right now.”

I was born with a extremely abusive father and when I was born my mom and him where not together anymore. My childhood was an absolute nightmare, nobody cared ab how I felt and they where always fighting in court and for who was a better parent without thinking ab the horrible life they were giving me. My mom is always the victim on everything but the truth is nobody stands her. After so many years and a very disfunctional and traumatic family, my father finally was accused and went to jail for abuse to my stepmother, lisis and I.
I live with her since 5 years ago bc b4 she never cared that much. She doesn’t work and does nothing to improve her life. I’ve been working and paying all since I’m 18, she never cared ab paying a tuition for last school years (my last bf helped me with that) and never gave me 1 single euro. I live alone with her in the every day more expensive city we’ve always lived in. I have to pay ALL THE BILLS, every fcking cent, even if she want to buy tea for breakfast, change electrodomestics, buy smth for Amazon (always little things). But she doesn’t put a single cent, it’s delirious. I’ve struggled a lot bc I can’t go to university and bc of the HUGE responsibility of taking care of an ENTIRE HOME by myself is giving a an stress that I’m everyday crazier. I’m gonna be 23, she doesn’t support me at all and treats me like absolute shit, she just want me to pay and pay and pay all and everyday she threatens me with kicking me out. I work as a waitress now but I’ve done disgusting things just for her to be at home all the day doing absolutely nothing and claiming that “I have to work bc she doesn’t want to and no one want they’re mother to work” as if I was Lionel Messi or smth. I have lots of emotional and psychological damage and I can’t go to therapy bc she doesn’t want me to have a single euro for nothing personal and every month I end up with 0€ for her to be “secure” with bills. I don’t have family, boyfriend (I’m kinda afraid she’ll ruin it again) or friends due to huge stress. I cannot scape and I’m staring to see no sense or purpose in life.

this is going to be pretty long and triggering, im not expecting anyone to read the full thing but im writing this to hopefully come to terms with what has happened to me, and i feel this is the only place where i'll be accepted. 19F btw.
i've been a compulsive overeater and sugar addict my entire life, and developed BED when i was 11, mostly due to having strict healthy parents and being a badly behaved child i thought of secretly binging on sweets i bought whilst out with friends as just another rule for me to break. when i started "high school" and suddenly had easier accessibility to junk food at 14, i gained 20lbs in 4 months which led me to attempt dieting. had a pretty normal dieting phase followed by a month long disordered eating phase in which i surrounded myself with pro ana content to try "force" anorexia. this did not work and after quitting this phase i started to binge more and more.
straight after turning 16, i started my gcses and a new job and had become extremely fed up with my weight and decided to try recover from BED. this quicky led into a restrict/binge disorder, which was VERY different to my disordered phase from before as i was unable to stop. no matter how hard i tried i could not stop restricting, but i was also unable to stop binging. this carried on until i was 17 going on 18 when my disorder worsened and i became fairly sick and developed anorexia.
fast forward to autumn 2022 when i started university. i got SA'd on my first night during freshers and got spiked a few weeks after that. my parents blamed me for getting spiked and invalidated my experience of that AND the SA that happened before, and this coupled with my weed addiction, the malnutrition and depression led me to full blown BED.
i had never ever experienced anything like this before. i felt like an alien had taken over me. i used to be a crazy party girl and had control over food, but suddenly all i wanted to do was lock myself in my flat smoking and binging for days at a time. i entered a horrible cycle of binging, low res, binge drinking, drug abuse etc. i started to prioritise binging over socialising and as a result really fucked up my social life in first term of uni. i became extremely suicidal and i was so addicted to weed and couldnt stop even though it was massively contributing to my binges and depressive episodes. also got addicted to ritalin to try stop binging (did not work LOL)
in second term i managed to break out of this cycle a bit, until something happening with a guy i liked triggered another weed induced depressive binge episode. feb 2023 is when things started to seriously go downhill for me. i'd already been slipping into a coke/benzo/ket addiction but started to completely lose control over it. the binging got out of control again and i have reached more lows in the past 2 months than i ever couldve imagined, so here we go:
- binged the day before a rave and then took tons of MDMA to try lose the weight. binged again on the comedown which led to me having to call samaritans for the next few days as i was dangerously suicidal.
- binged the day before going clubbing with friends and was so insecure about how i looked and got blackout drunk so i didnt have to think about my body.
- the day after this^, my friends and i had tickets to see a garage group and i'd been looking forward to it for MONTHS. on the day of the event i was so cripplingly hungover but forced myself to go. i had a panic attack on the bus on the way there, and left my friends to go to the event whilst i wandered around the city crying and buying binge food. i then sat on the bus back alone binging instead of being at the concert. this was my biggest low at the time and for weeks after this i was dangerously suicidal.
- last saturday i was on a horrific coke comedown but made it thru the day without binging until my friend asked to smoke for her birthday, and i got really shaky and dizzy so had to eat something which triggered a binge/purge session. the day afterwards, i was so fucking done with myself and what id become i started to make serious plans to end my life. i was minutes away from making an attempt on my life and had to call the mental health rapid response team. i spent a night in hospital because i was such a risk to myself, and was discharged in the morning only because i told them i was moving home from university.
this is so fucking embarrassing to post but i need to. i have bankrupted myself by spending all my money on food and drugs. i have destroyed my relationships, my uni experience, my mental health and my body. im actively suicidal to the point where i have to withdraw from uni because i cannot keep myself safe. ive turned into a complete monster. nothing is enjoyable any more, nothing fufills me apart from binging and restricting and losing weight and drugs. and thats whats so upsetting about all of this. i still have an anorexic mind and anorexic rules. i feel like im being possessed by a demon and i know that restricting wont make this cycle end, but i dont know what else to do. binging has been with me all my life, and i KNOW that this is not just a result of restriction. when im at uni all i want to do is binge, no matter how many days ive been binging before or how full i am or broke i am all my brain wants is a temporary taste of junk food.
someone please please tell me what to do. ive completely fucked myself up. my body and brain feel completely alien to me. im addicted to drugs and im addicted to binging. but im also addicted to restricting. im ruining my life more and more each day and becoming more and more scared for myself but i cant stop what im doing. i dont want to die this young because i know the world has more to offer than this. ive seen that life can be beautiful and worth living but i cannot see anything outside these 4 walls of my dark uni room, the numbers on myfitnesspal or the pills and powders in my drawer. i have completely given up on myself.
TLDR: anorexia to BED and drug addiction is destroying every aspect of my life to the point where i cant imagine myself living for much longer.

Ethical Anarchy
Every 1 million years, we vote on whether or not to keep Ethical Anarchy as a system.
Ethical Anarchy is a system based on the individual adoption of law. The only ground political contracs are the no killing, destruction or attempted destruction contracts, nor claiming ownership of the property except Simeon. A final ground ethical contract states that penalties for all crimes may be taken in blindness, pain, time or money. Simeon is immune.
Before, countries operated based off violence and war. Now they use money, lotteries and anti money to get better results. People had no real influence over the state. Even in democracies, the wisdom of the crowd was lost to bad education.
Ethical Anarchy has rules that distinguish it from old governments.
Law is individually adopted and enforced nonviolently.
People individually adopt laws that only apply to acts done against their person or property.
The "government" only has the power to keep you off of public property, not kill you. It has jurisdiction over the environment and streets. Any law enforced with prison, fines or anything else must be approved by a majority of the public in a referendum via ethical contract. There is no death penalty for anything other than murder, and that is decided individually or locally per star system, where life in hell or death are options in the death penalty referenda.
There is a judicial anarchy and rules for trials and appeals. Anyone can serve as a justice elector, but only has as much judicial power to share as people who vote for them. It takes a minimum of four votes to become a judicial elector, however a new ethical contract may decide. To have a trial, determine the size of judicial pool and how many judges you want. Judges are randomly selected from the drawn jurisdiction pool. Both victim and defendant pick half the applicable districts and can strike one of the other’s. They must also select a common language for the trial, if not then the language spoken by the most people on that planet will be chosen automatically.
Judges are rated by both the public and official rating services, or collections of rating services elected by the public that have a higher vote rate. Victim and defendant both rate judges after the trial. Highest rating judges are automatically selected. Appeals require you to bring in more judges.
There shall be one judge seat per 10,000 people judges serve a 10 year term. Each judge elected during phase 1 gets 1000 judicial points per vote they receive and bids on available judicial seats. Alternately, they can vote directly for candidates to fill each seat and use approval voting.
Good vs. Evil is replaced with left vs right as a main dichotomy and driving force in society.
Law enforced via warrant contracts.
All have authority to act in situations that require someone to act when they can

Economy, Land Ownership and Integration.

All must work or go to school. Distributaries fund schools and set standards for payment for taking different subjects or completing assignments. Individuals in space get paid to go to school, and must use this money to pay for entertainment , food and gaming access. The more and better assignments you do , harder classes you take or tutoring you complete, and better grades you get, the more money you earn.
Money must be used by all to pay land taxes, food taxes, and identity theft and reputation damages insurance among other things.
Licenses to sell food, access or traverse a bounded area, peak, trade, warp, park, live in a home, eat in space cost money, and must be paid each time a service is used. There shall be at least two licenses to sell food issued per star system, and all must be distributed via auction. The final number of food licenses must be determined by outlawry congress, and limited to no more than 90% of the population. Transferable eating licenses are to be sold by multiple providers in packs of 50, with each 50-pack being auctioned off.
Money may also be earned by interacting with the human economy: Creating, Buying and selling books, ideas, media, or online shopping, design, data entry, or any other digital or creative service. Drones may also be rented and space vacations sold. All earth money earned by working an ordinary job is matched at a rate set by the tax property assessor.
All entertainment must be paid for and original creators, be they people or being, be paid for rights to view, copy or share their work. Beings must purchase entertainment licenses from original creators by accosting movie studios or otherwise remunerate them. Copyrights in space last a minimum of 200 years, with the final amount being decided by ethical contract.
Money supply:
A UBI of $1000/month must be given to all individuals, and a circulating money supply of 4x extra must be distributed via work, grants, school and lotteries. The UBI must be funded through taxation of all income and is the only government expenditure besides game funding. Earth money is convertible into space money. On earth, space money can be used to pay for church expenditure, spirit cards and media.
In space, earth money can be used to pay for media and buy land for kingdoms.
Land Ownership
All land must be assessed a land tax by property assessors- general elected y the oubic using RRV, and each property asessor having the power to assess properties proportional to their vote share. Simeon and the body public at large, represented and effecting their will via congress, own the property.
Land value tax is not to be not less than 1% or land value per year, used to fund UBI.
All must send their taxes to a local galactic treasurer elected by all in a galaxy, who runs a census and distributes the money minus their salary equally to all. They must state their salary upfront before election and take no more than that amount from the tax haul to pay themselves. Nonpayers get their property claims ignored and their property sold at auction with the money going to everyone else.
Land must be leased for a time specified in a contract, during which the land rentnever goes up. Whoever offers the highest rent per month wins. Permanent land ownership is forbidden.
Any group of 10 or more contiguous landowners may agree to bound their neighborhood and charge tolls for access or traversal to nonresidents. All must pay except those egressing and giving notice. Rates shall be regulated by ethical contracts. Control zones one galaxy wide must be established.
Kingdoms
Gods must fund kingdoms with people money earned from followers, businesses and ventures on earth. No space-earned money can be used to build your kingdom other than what was earned via congress.
License to operate planet-based currency exchanges may be given out or auctioned, with the method to be determined by ethical contract.
Policing
Police forces must enforce centralized law that an absolute majority of the population selects. There would be a monopoly on police funding, but decentralized forces may be able to do police work. Police consumer cooperatives may be established to compete, selling no more than 20 percent of stock to non owners.
All police forces must be organized as consumer police cooperatives, with a minimum of fifty members. unless a majority of a star system's residents choose to allow private police. Everyone must join one, and police cooperatives may self-defend or contract with external agencies for defense, serving as buyer's coops. All members of police coops must vote on police chief leading the department and sign a thirty year security contract.
Cooperatives will compete to provide property insurance and security to members. Any group of fifty or more people can start a security force and be legal to buy weapons. All security cooperatives are funded by the people they serve and everyone must join one.
Anyone who is properly trained can do policework in ethical anarchy. Any person can make an arrest after attending free or paid police education. Police would be able to enforce orders of outlawry on the population. Only trained police officers could make arrests. Police forces would operate independently and be able to outlaw rogue agencies after a trial, where agencies representing a ¾ majority of the public could convict and shut down a police force.
Police services would partner to respond to calls and trade tokens. If police force a responded to a call from someone in police force b, then police force b would need to respond to one call from police force a in the future.
No cooperative may be created excluding customers from a segment of the population and compete to hire centrally trained and licensed police officers. No limit on police licenses given out may be issued.
Police Coordinator
Elected by the police chiefs of all forces one vote one police force, most votes wins. The police coordinator is elected by all cooperative leaders in a system, sector, galaxy and universally. Cooperatives decide who votes for them. Additional funding may be given to cooperatives based on membership.
Central Police Chief
Chosen by Jungle primary FPTP.
No special power to kill, just right to evict trespassers from public property and transfer to rison.
CPC appointed officers would accompany those seeking to arrest individuals for a bounty to make sure rogue agencies couldn't make false arrests. A court established by congress or ethical contract could outlaw an agency found to be in breach of local guidelines for operation, like extortion.
Funding
Services would be funded via warrant contract. Contributors to essential charities a majority of the public likes, like educational and health services would band together and refuse to buy, sell or admit people who traded with those who didn't contribute. Alternatively, they could simply charge them more. This works for the military too. For business owners, they would pay personal income taxes or their personal homes and property would not be protected and crimes against them would not be investigated.
Prison and Outlaws
All prisons could be run either privately or publicly by the highway police. All would be funded via warrant contract. Regulations for prisons and police would be created by congress.
Who may outlaw? Only a democratically elected judge or their delegates chosen by an absolute majority of people in any given area. This implies a two stage election w/runoff. FPTP with runoff if no candidate receives an absolute majority should be used.
Higher levels of government might offer veto and safe harbor to an outlawry notice.
Who can arrest?
Anyone if someone is a suspect. And there’s the issue.

Everyone has a right to create a party for congress and collect the votes of nonvoters, gathering petitions from those who want to give their votes to a party for a given length of time, say, 2 weeks to 5 years.
Congress would consist of a single unicameral legislature with 1 seat per 10000000 people. Parties would be elected. Uninterested voters may be able to give their votes to a party or congress as a whole as mentioned. Congress would establish agencies, tribunals and provide oversight. They could impeach and remove a president from power. They would also hold contests..
Congress could make rules enforceable by deprotection, outlawry or confinement to home or building with a simple majority. Congress could not force, but relies on society and local governments to implement its will. It could also withhold funding.

Discrimination. Discrimination is bad. How can an ethical anarchy handle discrimination when local majorities support it? Ethical anarchy can do just as well as a democracy does when businesses discriminate. All it takes are smart warrant contracts. Businesses need supplies from all over to function. Those who refuse to hire or serve an underpriveleged minority can lose when other businesses boycott their suppliers or charge them extra. This will force them to go out of business or stop discriminating. Customers who support discriminatory businesses can be charged extra when they shop elsewhere, as may workers or owners.
This makes gathering and arresting suspects easy even en masse as they do it themselves. People who refuse to turn themselves in for questioning are most likely guilty, so crime solved itself. The less crime, the more resources there are to solve the little crime that exists, making us better at it. Everyone could be investigated eventually, and road cameras or overhead blimps could surveil the territory.
Ethical Anarchy
Weapon, Tool stores and gun stores would be required to record all buyers.
Any underhanded purchases would be caught by a double sting system. Purchases without proper identification would result in shutdowns and sentences. Gun store owners would be rewarded for reporting people who attempted to buy guns without the proper identifying info. They would have their property seized, sold and go to jail.
As for gun store owners, they would have their businesses, personal property and possibly lives taken if an unauthorized buyer successfully bought a gun. They would go to jail for life at the very least.
To operate without violent mobs burning down the store, gun stores would work with local police and advertise the fact in the window. No person would try buying a gun without valid ID.
All transfers of guns and lost or stolen guns and other weapons must be reported. Or else you go to jail or pay. However, any time you have a gun to someone who used it in an aggressive shooting you would be fined.
Gun safes and checkups would be handled by the gun store so they didn't get taxed.
Deterring crimes. More stings may occur than crimes. The media may report this. And report on successful stings. This would replace most bad news. Anyone could participate in or start a sting operation.
Ask are you buying a gun for someone else? And do some stings. Asking to or offering to straw purchase would be crime.
Refusing to allow mediators in to your house to search or arrest would be seen as suspicious.

Penalties for Murder
Economic imprisonment is the best way forward, rather than prison.
For murder, a person would be burned for three times as long as they and the victim had been alive in addition to modern slavery. They would be chained to a work facility, weighted and fed by their employer or get food subsidies for authorized food. They would have ninety percent of their wages or more taken and the rest used to buy time away from fire. While prison costs money and resources, and death takes them away, this creates them. When not at work or in the bathroom, the prisoner slave would be blindfolded.
They could also be burned.
Why ethical anarchy? A story.
Democracy is better than dictatorship, but it's still rule by the few chosen by the mostly uneducated. Democracy is bad on rights. If the government can kill you, it has too much power. Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to eat. Ethical Anarchy is excellent on rights because everyone only has power over their own property and bodies, not yours. Collective property like air, water and roads are managed publically through democracy and local congresses. Your stuff is managed by you.
Individual property is managed and well taken care of by people.
But at the same time, collective property accessible by those paying for it's upkeep will be managed by an elected manager.
Anyone who wants to access collective property may if they pay a fee. Only those who pay may enter or use it. Stewards are chosen by paying members or a central authority.
The author suggests that property upkeep be auctioned off to the lowest cost highest quality firm via contract.
Democracy works sometimes, but other times it doesn't. Imagine if we democratically decided what to eat for dinner instead of letting people make their own choices. In ethical anarchy, personal rights and freedom win every time because the system is built off of it. Ethical anarchy protects the smallest minority of all, the person.

All businesses would be required to have insurance to cover loss and damage before they opened up in a city. God may also regulate it. This would be regulated by deprotection. The list of ethical contracts you and your business have signed enabling the consumer safety authority to investigate you would be publically displayed.
To be approved, grocery stores would only carry merchandise from approved businesses. Any business not approved would be allowed to warn

We have lived through and seen dictatorship, the weakness of democracy and ineffectiveness of anarchy. We resolve to choose none of the preceding and avoid repeating the errors of the past. We the people of Paelia, Karine, Nara, Rallfallamine, Pellend, Cassini, Section, Trace and Ledder along with surrounding states combine to form an Ethical Anarchy, and name our new country Ethica, in honor of said system as developed by our founder and freemaker Simeon Burks.
Remembering the many just who died to ensure our liberty and freedom during the transition and war for congress,

We establish a new state based on Non destruction and
Legislature
The legislature for ethical anarchy shall consist of the people and a bicameral Congress for outlawries.
The people shall freely adopt ethical contracts as they wish, with a fifty one percent majority of the public being sufficient to send power to an ethical contract. Once powered, violators of an ethical contract may not access, traverse or use public property. They must also submit to tribunals and punishments described in the ethical contract although they may not have signed. Until powered, ethical contracts only bind people who sign them.
No person may be forced to sign an ethical contract, but individuals and groups may require the adoption of certain ethical contracts for entrance, or membership. Failure to ratify an ethicalrecal contract is valid cause for firing or dismissal from a group.
The legislature shall have the power to outlaw a person or create reasons for outlawry with a fifty one percent majority in addition to the public. Members of Parliament shall have the right to broadcast ethical contracts to all on a monthly ballot. The legislature controls ballot access. The legislature may make any law with any penalty except death with a fifty one percent majority. Acceptance of law is mandatory to travel on public property. Congress shall regulate police divergence, arrests and academies. Congress may regulate the economy and choose an economic system with a simple majority.
There shall be 454,000 seats distributed daily proportionally by party. The party getting the most votes selects the president.
The upper house (House of Gods) consists of 16,000 seats, and approves all judicial appointments, or regulations on god (not taxes) and standards for becoming one by a simple majority. Otherwise, legislstion needs only the first house. Thaos reserves a third of this house. It is elected by personal, national and local gods, each getting a vote number equal to the number of people supporting them, be they followers or voters. 40 year terms. The house of gods may block a lower house bill for up to 2 years or until the next election and regulate contests and coregulate space commerce. It, along with Chaos shall publish reports rating gods. It may rule on questions of the day and issue pronouncements via the figure.
The upper house shall select a yearly figure, chief distributary and person of the year. The same person may win up to two times in a row.
The vote gods possess in this house is cumulative. Gods choose a virtual district 1-sixteenthou and must stick with it for three elections.
Ethical contracts may only bind a person and their property, never third parties who did not sign unless the contract is mutual or about children, who may be considered collective property.
Ethical contracts must be voluntarily signed without coercion, although pressure and incentives can be used.
The legislature consists of a Congress for force that determines legitimate reasons for using force. No person has a unqualified legal right to use force, only valid and invalid reasons. Only a majority of people in both Congresses or the mediations it establishes may determine if a particular use of force is valid.
Ethical contracts are enforced using warrant contracts, blacklisting, boycott and exclusion from the use of public property if a contract is mutual. They may also specify other penalties.
When a person who has not signed an ethical contract acts against someone who has not signed it, the person not signing is indemnified unless the contract was powered with a majority vote, in which case the person breaking the contract is subject to legal action.
Ethical contracts cover acts done against signing people on public property, the private property of signers and the private property of nonsigners if signers are there, but not the private property of nonsigners if no signers are around.
Simeon has a prenalty of twenty million at 999 nonbinillion cubed providing immunity from all nonmurder crimes.
The territory allows no individual or group destruction or government issued a death penalty. If someone is outlawed nobody may protect them and they may be hurt or killed by any person.
Outlawry may only be used in cases of murder and for people failing to report to arrest, questioning, or prison.
Executive
The leader of the day selected by the largest party possesses the right to unilaterally appoint judges of the day and police chiefs. They may make any policy or appointment, subject only to veto by the guardian council and standing council. They may be impeached and removed by a 4/5 vote of either. Policies and appointments may last 1 day. The same person may be reelected 5,200 times in total, and for 1400 days in a row. Every two years we elect a special Leader of the day who serves a two year term. This person serves as a long term planner and appoints or oversees the election of visionaries at local discretion.
Guardian council is a 10,000 member council of randomly selected citizens who pick the highest numbers minus the top 4000. As selects. Standing council is all interested citizens who voluntarily join. They can block any action of the leader by majority vote as may congress.
The Congress may create congressional agencies and staff them at it's discretion.
A Standby Emergency Director shall be selected via mass petition. The person with the most votescollected in 4 days wins a three month term. Voters may vote for as many candidates as they want. The SED shall have the power to coordinate and lead emergency response if Congress declares a state of emergency for up to six months. The same person may win twelve times.
Law Enforcement
Every level of government is to elect a chief of police coordination and emergency response to oversee investigations and arrests and choose watchers.
If someone is listed as an outlaw by a congressionally established mediation or Congress itself, any person may make an arrest and Recieve a reward if the subject is captured alive. There will be a fine if the subject is killed during arrest unless watchers oversee the arrest and verify it was conducted lawfully in accordance with congressional rule
Prison
Prisons are public, private and mixed. They are to be regulated by law. Refusing to voluntarily go to jail to await a trial or sentencing is automatic outlawry.
Warrant Contracts
Warrant contracts, or pledges not to trade with people who trade with other people
Security
The people shall elect a monthly minister of security via petition. The person with the most signatures by the end of the month wins the position. The Minister of Security shall oversee regionwide defense and intelligence.
LSDD is Provisional Minister of Security until a new one is elected.
Security Districts to elect local police chiefs are drawn by the Minister of Security. Police chiefs elected every three months.
Naos is part of the security plan. XDD must be made programmed to resurrect chaos.
Judicial
Daily judges elected by leader of the day service all typical cases. Every second year, the second leader of the day appoints two year justices who serve as a court of appeals. Judges must be allowed to complete cases they start regardless of whoever appointed them's term being up.
Everyone is entitled to nine appeals before they go to Naos or a religious court.
The lower house of congress shall create an act organizing the supreme court (s) and visionaries. Congress shall create cours in addition to the 11 member Supreme Court. They shall approve or reject supreme court nominees by the Emergency Director.
For Ethical Anarchy Territory, As shall Staff the thirty five member supreme court.
The supreme court is the final arbiter of appeals for all cases on or in the territory.
There shall be sixteen districts throughout the land, each of equal population. District map drawn and approved by Chaos and Force Congress. God's compete over districts courts and the right to organize or sponsor police departments.
Property and Land
Chaos registers property. Simeon owns the land and caretakes it for Ethical Anarchy.
No person may be kept on a persons territory by force.
World and Environment
Simeon owns Naming rights. The environment the constitution may regulate is defined as any public or private property that flows into and intermixes with public property. (i.e, air and water) The public may regulate activity in and on such.
Ballots and Information
Individuals may create ballot listing services compiling a list of ethical contracts for readers to sign. The parliament regulates fraud and valid signature collection. It is not the government's responsibility to gather and list all Ethical contracts in one place.
The government may establish signing houses for people to sign notarized ethical contracts free of compulsion and mandate their use. Alternatively, they may send people who were listed as signing an ethical contract a notification.
Money and Minting
Simeon owns the minting and Economic system. Money must be used to pay taxes, buy a $10,000 weekly travel pass, land, play games and view media, but land and travel expenses. Simeon shares the mints with Congress. You earn money by attending school and going to parties or by playing sports. School attendance pays up to 15,000 weekly with good grades paying more.

Hi there,
I'm in my final year at university.
I am usually entitled to the maximum maintenance loan. This year I was entitled to £9,179, which I think is slightly less than normal because it was my final year.
However, my final in person lecture is on March 31st, so I decided to give my landlord notice and move back to my mum's flat in London as I'd rather be there than my university city. I was aware that changing my address would mean I was entitled to less money if I was living with a parent, but I received the new figure and I'm not sure it is accurate and am struggling to double check.
I sent SFE my C01 change of details form and also added an extra note basically explaining that I had been living at my university address for the entire first two terms, but that for my final term I intended to move back home and be with a parent.. I made it. clear it was only effective for the 3rd and final term only as I had no in person teaching.
My new entitlement says that I am getting £7,689.00 in total, so £1,490 less. I'm just wondering if a mistake has been made, as I think that £1490 is the difference if you're living at home, but I think they've done it assuming that I am going to be / was at home for the entire year when it's actually just my 3rd and final term.
Can anyone please guide me as to whether this is a mistake or not? I was expecting it to be £500 less, not 1500 less. I am also paying my mum the same amount of rent as my student flat so I am not any better off personally (well worse off!). Also I can afford this / it isn't the end of the world but I'm just not entirely convinced that it is correct, and would really appreciate some guidance. Thank you!

Why isn’t everyone already doing this? (Ask me and I’ll provide some answers!) First of all, there’s a lot of confusion surrounding what role(s) insects can play in reducing fragility in the food and agriculture system, and I’m certain most are unaware of how powerful this truly can be.I started more than 10 years ago as a lone ranger on a community level. Man vs. Waste. I biked around my the Jersey City ‘Gold Coast’ hauling loads of food waste back to my own DIY system in my house (yep) where I was experimenting with my own BSFL colony for years. This might sound wild (it was) but I was experienced in managing home-insect colonies (bee keeping) and have been tinkering with my waste for decades (composting).
Today, I have a team at Chapul Farms bringing this solution to industrial scale (perhaps, in the nick of time) backed by a leading sustainable infrastructure engineering partner (Nexus PMG). Our loonshot impact will come from building a business that can re-integrate insects back into our food system to perform this crucial tasks they were actually evolved to perform. For example: Did you know that insects can:
· Consume organic waste at industrial scales
· Create naturally nutritious protein and fat for animals (we don’t actually need humans to eat them!)
· Locally produce better-than-synthetic fertilizer that heals soil and allows it to capture more carbon than all the trees in the world
It’s so common-sense that it’s been overlooked for decades for its potential to close some of the biggest open loops that threaten our food system (100s of millions of tons of organics are landfilled annually and billions in total!). We just need to re-weave insects (a keystone species) back into the food system so they can perform all their natural tasks like eliminating waste, improving soil health, biofiltering, and efficiently producing local animal feed and fertilizer ingredients.
Back to CHAPUL FARMS: they were building a pipeline with the potential to deploy $1B into the insect industry leveraging years of pioneering the space. (What did that even mean??) They figured out how to most efficiently scale “insect solutions.” Instead of just building an insect farm (to sell bugs into feed and fertilizer markets), they wanted to offer custom insect farms as solutions to the growing challenges faced by big food businesses with large volumes of organic waste. This “closed-loop”, “nature-based” solution was truly a win for the business, its clients, and the world. It started to click:
· Offer a profitable way for existing ag businesses to work toward true Zero Waste.
· Sell a way for farmers to turn waste costs into revenue streams.
· Build infrastructure that can produce local fertilizer and feed products…without monoculture and petrochemical inputs.
· Replace landfills with insect farms.

I just got a graduate internship in computer science and I'm going to earn a fair amount of money. It probably wouldn't be much to some people, but it's literally life changing to me. Sorry for the long read....
For context: I'm a black orphan from a relatively poor family in South Africa. I was a brilliant kid and finished secondary school with great results; got a scholarship to study actuarial science. I dropped out in second year because my family home got flooded during a bad weather storm and they quickly needed money. I worked in retail for a while. I was depressed and suicidal for some time. Anyway, I decided to go back to school and this time, I got a scholarship to study accounting science. I dropped out after one year because the thoughts of suicide and the depressive episodes were weighing too heavy on me. I couldn't go back home and be another mouth to feed so I just did menial jobs to survive in another city and was basically homeless for some time.
A year later, I decided to study computer science and mathematics as a double major. I got yet another scholarship (I can't stress enough how brilliant my results in secondary school were; especially for someone from my background - imagine an African village just with a lot of houses). Even after all this time, that one piece of paper (my Matric certificate - which is like a high school diploma to Americans) was awarding me opportunities. I studied for my degree for three years and failed a module in my final year, which I'm going to repeat this year, next semester. Surprisingly, I was still able to land myself a graduate position at the biggest media company in the continent as a full time software engineering intern for a one year contract with the potential for a permanent position.
I've only been working for 20 days but I love it. The people are amazing, I love the work itself, the culture, the learning experience - everything about this job is great. They gave me a Mac, monitor and other devices to work from home. I live in a studio apartment alone in the city where my university is located right now. Haven't gotten paid yet but with the money I'll make here I can build my family a new house, pay for my brother's education, buy the clothes I've always wanted for him, myself, my sister and my grandmother and still have enough left over to enjoy hobbies - all within the one year contract.
I woke up this morning, looked at my desk setup and started crying. Sobbing basically lol. Everything I've dreamt of could actually be coming together. I'm not used to this feeling - having nothing standing in my way. I'm so accustomed to things not going well for me that this literally feels unbelievable - like this isn't my life. My life is full of pain, poverty, homelessness, hunger, you name it. This software engineer, Javascript developer with a mac and a nice apartment working on really cool apps that impact millions of lives is new to me.
I've been having difficulty maintaining productivity. I've been feeling lazy and demotivated for no reason at all! Whenever I sit down to actually work and write code; it feels so good. So natural, but the second I stop, it's hard to go back again. I joined nofap (I'm sure you know why) and been watching YouTube videos trying to stay motivated but somehow, for no reason, I find myself wasting days without doing much work or doing the bare minimum. I have so many cool things I wanna learn, so many cool apps I wanna build on the side - but I'm just not getting things done.
I'm now terrified that I might be about to self-sabotage and ruin this opportunity for myself. I can't stress this enough - everything is in my hands right now. My whole life I could blame the government, structural racism, poverty, the weather - literally anything for my circumstances and I'd be right. The cards have always been stacked against me since the day I was born. This time, however, if I mess this up, there's no one to blame but me. Everything is up to me to make it work and with the way I've been the past few weeks, I. might just blow this.
Can anyone relate to this? or at least some part of my story? If you can, please share some advice with me. Literally anything. Even if you can't relate - any insightful tips on how to get out of this weird slump will be massively appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Notwithstanding the several massive welfare schemes that are being implemented during the last two years, owing to the unprecedented and difficult reforms undertaken, we have reduced the annual revenue deficit of around Rs.62,000 crore which we inherited on assuming office, to around Rs.30,000 crore in the Revised Estimates of the current year. It is noteworthy that this is approximately Rs.5,000 crore lower than the level of the pre-COVID year of 2019-20. In accordance with the mandate of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of achieving Zero-revenue deficit, the State will adopt a smooth glide path without compromising on our welfare initiatives and developmental priorities
The main reason for the fiscal stress faced by the Government at the time of assuming office was the fall in tax revenue in the previous years. The State‟s own tax revenues which were at a healthy 8 per cent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) during 2006-11 have witnessed a precipitous fall in the last 10 years and reached 5.58 per cent in 2020-21. This is much lower when compared to other large States such as Maharashtra and Karnataka. Though the Tax-GSDP ratio has increased to 6.11 per cent in the current year due to the efforts of this Government in the last two years, concerted action is needed to raise it further to find financial resources for welfare schemes.
The Hon‟ble Chief Minister adroitly handled the second wave of Covid, major floods in Chennai and severe financial stress. In spite of these constraints, he was able to fulfill the promises to the people and has several achievements to his credit. He has urged us to strive to fulfill the expectations of the people in the coming years and I have prepared this budget keeping these instructions in mind. With these introductory remarks, let me now proceed to sector-wise view of the Budget 2023-24.
To honour the legacy of Tamil martyrs Thiruvalargal Thalamuthu and Natarajan, who sacrificed their lives to protect Tamil in the struggle against Hindi imposition, a memorial will be established at Chennai.
In order to propagate the ideals of Annal Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution and the architect of a progressive and egalitarian India, the Government will provide a grant of Rs.5 crore to translate his works into Tamil language.
To give an impetus to the growth of Tamil as a global language by promoting its usage in the technology sector, an „International Conference on Tamil Computing‟ will be held with the participation of renowned experts from across the world. This will greatly encourage development of software in Tamil language.
With a view to celebrating the glory of Tamils who have conquered many lands overseas, efforts will be taken to promote and support sea cruises that will connect places of significance in Tamil culture. These cruises will showcase the rich history, literature, art, culture, handicrafts and cuisine of Tamil people and will spread the State‟s glory across the seven seas.
The Government has been providing free bus pass to elderly Tamil scholars in recognition of their invaluable contribution to our language. In the coming year, the Government will extend this benefit to 591 more Tamil scholars.
To enable the younger generation to imbibe and appreciate our celebrated art heritage, the Government will expand the widely popular Chennai Sangamam cultural programme to 8 major cities in the coming year. It will provide a platform to nurture folk art and artists and celebrate the shared cultural ethos of the Tamil people. An amount of Rs.11 crore is provided in this Budget for this purpose.
To preserve folk arts and to ensure that these traditions continue to flourish in the future, 25 part time folk art training centres will be set up across the State.
The Cholas are one of the greatest dynasties who conquered seas and the lands beyond, and ruled vast stretches of India and South East Asia for many centuries. Tamil art, music, architecture, sculpture, crafts and dance reached their pinnacle during the Chola period and their glory spread far and wide. To highlight the contribution of the Cholas who ruled the world, and to preserve artefacts and relics of that age, a “Grand Chola Museum‟ will be set up in Thanjavur.
The Hon‟ble Chief Minister intervened on humanitarian grounds to send essential commodities to help the people affected by the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka. After securing the consent of the Union Government, 40,000 MT of rice, 500 MT of milk powder and 102 MT of medical supplies, worth Rs.197 crore have been sent in three ships.
We have been continually requesting the Union Government to grant Indian citizenship to Sri Lankan Tamils residing in India. Pending this request, this Government had announced that 7,469 houses will be constructed in the rehabilitation camps for Sri Lankan Tamils, with the objective of providing safe and quality accommodation. In the first phase, 3,510 houses were taken up for construction at a cost of Rs.176 crore and the works are underway. In the second phase, the Government will sanction Rs.223 crore towards construction of the remaining 3,959 houses in the coming financial year.
Recognizing the valour and supreme sacrifice made by security forces in guarding our nation, the ex-gratia that is being offered by the State Government to the next of kin of armed forces personnel hailing from Tamil Nadu who are killed in wa war-like operations will be doubled from Rs.20 lakh to Rs.40 lakh. Further, the monetary grants that are offered to gallantry awards/distinguished service medal winners in armed forces hailing from Tamil Nadu will be enhanced four times.
Ensuring quality education and medical facilities to all is the fundamental objective of this Government. It is in pursuance of this goal that the Government is implementing pioneering schemes like Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam and Innuyir Kappom, besides taking several initiatives to strengthen the public health infrastructure in the State. The Government is implementing the novel Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme, where non-communicable diseases are identified and addressed at an early stage. This Government which is deeply concerned about the welfare of workers, who are the bedrock of our economy, will launch a new initiative to address the issue of non-communicable diseases among workers in factories and in unorganised sectors like construction. The Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme will be expanded to 711 factories covering 8.35 lakh workers in the first phase. Health checkup camps will be held in these factories with specific emphasis on non-communicable diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. Migrant labourers will also benefit under this scheme.
Under the Chief Minister‟s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, insurance coverage of Rs.5 lakh is being given per year per family. During the current year, so far, 11.82 lakh patients have availed treatment worth Rs.993 crore, which is the highest since the inception of the scheme.
The 1,000 bedded Kalaignar Memorial Multi Super Speciality Hospital in the premises of King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research Centre, Guindy will be inaugurated this year. New speciality hospital buildings are being constructed in three Government medical college hospitals at Madurai, Coimbatore and Kilpauk at a total cost of Rs.1,020 crore and they will be put to use shortly
New buildings will be constructed at a cost of Rs.110 crore in the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, which caters to the medical needs of people in Tiruchirappalli and its surrounding districts. In order to fulfil the medical needs of people in North Chennai, a new multi-speciality block, nurses training school and hostel will be constructed in Stanley Hospital at a cost of Rs.147 crore.
The first Government Siddha Medical College in the State was established in Palayamkottai in 1964. At present, there are 100 undergraduate and 60 post-graduate students in this institute. Further, treatment is also being provided to nearly 1,000 patients on a daily basis. The Government will undertake works to improve the infrastructure of the college and hospital at a cost of Rs.40 crore. Rs.18,661 crore has been allotted towards Health and Family Welfare Department in the Budget.
Due to the various initiatives launched by this Government in the last two years, the student enrolment in Government schools has increased significantly. Therefore, the Government had launched the „Perasiriyar Anbazhagan School Development Scheme‟ to modernize and upgrade physical infrastructure at an outlay of Rs.7,000 crore over a period of five yeaRs.During the current year, works to the tune of Rs.2,000 crore have been taken up. In the upcoming financial year, the Government will construct classrooms, laboratories and toilets at a cost of Rs.1,500 crore.
The „Ennum Ezhuthum‟ Programme aims at achieving Universal Foundational Literacy and Numeracy for students in classes 1 – 3 by 2025. Owing to the positive response received, this programme will be expanded to classes 4 and 5 with an outlay of Rs.110 crore in the upcoming financial year.
The goal of social justice can be fulfilled only when knowledge is made widespread and accessible to people in the remotest of places. With this objective, moving beyond Chennai, book fairs were conducted in all districts and five literature festivals were successfully conducted during the current year. This great initiative will continue next year also, at a cost Rs.10 crore. The Government successfully organized the first edition of the Chennai International Book Fair in January 2023 with participation from 24 countries. An unprecedented number of 355 MoUs were signed between publishers from Tamil Nadu and various countries paving way for knowledge and copyright exchange. This international book fair will also be conducted next year.
Educational institutions play a vital role in establishing social justice, equality and equity in all walks of life. Therefore, the Government has been taking multiple initiatives in the last two years to improve the quality of education through schemes such as Ennum Ezhuthum, Schools of Excellence, Hi-tech Labs, Model Schools, and Perasiriyar Anbazhagan School Development Scheme. It is essential that the benefits of these programmes reach all students. Requests have been received to operate and maintain Adi Dravidar Welfare Schools through the School Education department in the State High-Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meetings held under the chairmanship of the Hon'ble Chief Minister on 19.8.21 and 12.4.22. To achieve the goal of social justice in the field of education, to improve the quality of schools functioning under various departments and to ensure that all students are provided quality education, all schools functioning under various departments like Adi-Dravidar and Tribal Welfare, Backward Class, Most Backward Class & Denotified Communities, Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments and Forest will be brought under the School Education department. It will be ensured that the service conditions and benefits of teachers and staff presently working in these schools are protected.
The Government is using data based governance to remove various shortcomings in the implementation of schemes. In order to reduce the unnecessary delay in the disbursement of scholarships by various departments and to ensure that scholarship amount reaches eligible students in a timely manner, directly to their bank accounts, an integrated scholarship portal will be created.
An iconic eight-storeyed library in two lakh square feet, with all modern amenties is being constructed in Madurai, the seat of Tamil Sangam. This library will cater to all sections of the society including children, students, researchers, youth who are preparing for competitive exams, homemakers, senior citizens and the differently abled. The library will feature special facilities including children‟s section with colourful books, separate area with internet facility for those writing competitive exams, braille books for the visually impaired, air conditioned meeting halls, art gallery to exhibit the cultural heritage of Southern Tamil Nadu and an exquisite repository of the writings and speeches of Muthamizharignar Kalaignar.
In the first phase, this library will house 3.50 lakh books in Tamil and English relating to various subjects like literature, culture, science, engineering, law and medicine. This modern temple of knowledge in Southern Tamil Nadu will be named Kalaignar Centenary Library to mark the commencement of centenary celebrations of Muthamizharignar Kalaignar, in recognition of his immense contribution to the Tamil society. This library will welcome its first readers in June this year. Rs.40,299 crore has been allocated towards School Education Department in the Budget.
The Government is cognizant of the fact that human resource is the greatest wealth of the State and has been investing heavily in its development. We recognise that a highly skilled workforce is a unique competitive advantage to attract investments into the State. Therefore, to create a workforce suited for the rapidly changing industrial ecosystems, a scheme is underway to transform 71 Government ITIs to Centres of Excellence at a cost of Rs.2,877 crore. The works will be completed and students will be enrolled in new courses in the coming academic year itself.
In the next phase, the Government will launch a programme in the coming year to transform and modernize the Government Polytechnic colleges into „Centres of Excellence‟ in accordance with the Industry 4.0 standards in collaboration with industry partners. The programme will focus on infrastructure modernization, industry relevant course content creation, capacity building of faculty members and employment opportunities for the students. 54 Government polytechnics will be upgraded as „Centres of Excellence‟ at a total cost of Rs.2,783 crore under this scheme.
The Government proposes to establish a world class skill centre named “Tamil Nadu World Innovation and Skill Training Hub” (TN-WISH) at Ambattur at a cost of Rs.120 crore with the objective of providing skill training to trainers in ITIs and polytechnics and to create a highly skilled workforce. The hub will provide training in advanced technologies such as Mechatronics, Internet of Things, Advanced Automobile Technology, Precision Engineering and Advanced Welding.
The Hon‟ble Chief Minister had launched the visionary programme “Naan Mudhalvan” last year to train 10 lakh students and youth in industry relevant skills and thus generate job opportunities for them. This programme is being implemented in all engineering and arts and science colleges in collaboration with industry partneRs.Academic curriculum has been revised to include industry relevant courses to improve employability of students. Currently, about 12.7 lakh students from engineering and arts and science colleges are being trained under this programme. 12,582 engineering faculty and 7,797 arts & science faculty have also been trained. Rs.50 crore has been provided for this scheme in the budget.
To scale up skill training infrastructure in a massive way, factories will be used as Skill Development Centres. Industries will be incentivized to provide on-the-job-training to youth in factories. In this Budget, an amount of Rs.25 crore has been allocated for this „Factory Skill Schools‟ programme. A state-of-the-art Skill Development Centre will be established, at an estimated cost of Rs.80 crore, in SIPCOT Industrial Park, Shoolagiri in Krishnagiri district, which is emerging as the third largest industrial cluster in the State.
The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar College Development Scheme was launched last year with an outlay of Rs.1,000 crore for improving infrastructure and basic amenities in Government colleges over a period of five yeaRs.In the current year, works such as construction of new classrooms and additional laboratories have been taken up in 26 Government polytechnic colleges and 55 Government arts and science colleges. These works will be carried out in the coming financial year also at an estimated cost of Rs.200 crore.
It is seen that the number of students from Tamil Nadu clearing the Civil Services Examinations has been on the decline in the last few years. With the objective of reversing this trend, Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC) will implement a scheme in co-ordination with Anna Staff Administrative College to help civil services aspirants to access better coaching facilities and materials. Every year 1,000 civil services aspirants will be short listed through a screening test. Each aspirant will be provided Rs.7,500 per month for 10 months to prepare for the preliminary examination. Those students who clear the preliminary examination will be provided a lumpsum amount of Rs.25,000. For this programme, an amount of Rs.10 crore has been allocated to TNSDC in the Budget Estimates 2023-24. In aggregate, an allocation of Rs.6,967 crore has been made to the Higher Education Department in this Budget.
With the realization that tomorrow‟s society is the responsibility of today‟s youth, this Government is committed to making the youth strong and vibrant. With the successful conduct of International Chess Olympiad in Chennai and the competitions for Chief Minister‟s Trophy being held across the State, the sports sector has been given a new impetus. As the next step, the Government through the Chennai Metropolitan Development Agency will set up a state-of-the-art Global Sports City in Chennai which will promote the development of sports and emerge as a favoured destination for leading sports events. For this purpose, a detailed project report will be prepared by engaging international experts.
The Government will undertake a comprehensive renovation of the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Outdoor Stadium, Chennai and equip it with modern sports facilities at an estimated cost of Rs.25 crore.
This Government, which is founded on the principles of social justice and equitable growth, attaches highest priority to the development of Adi-Dravidars and Tribals. With the objective of increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio of Adi Dravidar and Tribal students in higher education and providing them safe and quality accommodation, four new hostels will be constructed with modern facilities in Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli and Nilgiris at an estimated total cost of Rs.100 crore. These hostels will be maintained and managed by engaging professional agencies.
It has been a long pending demand to enact a legislation to ensure effective implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Tribal Sub Plan. Heeding to this request, the Government will bring a new legislation to ensure adequate allocation of funds and effective implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Tribal Sub Plans. The draft bill will be introduced in the next session of the Assembly after due consultation with stakeholdeRs.
The practice of manual cleaning of sewers and septic tanks is a blot on humanity. In order to completely prevent deaths due to manual cleaning of sewers and septic tanks, a new scheme has been recently launched by this Government. By transforming sanitary workers into entrepreneurs and facilitating them to procure modern machinery, this scheme will enable them to undertake these works in a safe manner and generate income. In this scheme, priority will be given to families of sanitary workers who died during manual cleaning and to persons currently engaged in sanitary work, on the basis of their willingness. In the first phase, the scheme will be implemented in the Chennai Metropolitan area. Based on this pilot exercise, the scheme will be expanded to the entire State.
It is seen that the share of persons from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities who avail various entrepreneurship promotion subsidies from the Government is very low. In order to promote economic development of SC/ST entrepreneurs, a new scheme called „Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme‟ will be launched in the coming financial year. The new scheme will provide 35 per cent capital subsidy and offer 6 per cent interest subvention for loans to procure machineries and equipment. A sum of Rs.100 crore is allocated for this scheme in the Budget Estimates 2023-24.
To revive the Welfare Board for Puthirai Vannars, Rs.10 crore will be provided to undertake livelihood development and welfare activities.
A new scheme named „Iyothee Thass Pandithar Habitation Development Scheme‟ will be launched to ensure basic amenities in Adi Dravidar habitations in both urban and rural areas and to bring about comprehensive socio-economic development. The scheme will be implemented at a cost of Rs.1,000 crore over a period of 5 years.
A sum of Rs.3,513 crore has been allocated to the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department in this Budget.
It is well known that it was Muthamizharignar Kalaignar who coined the term „Differently Abled‟. Given the importance of this department, it is directly looked after and works are closely monitored by the Hon‟ble Chief Minister. RIGHTS project is being implemented at a cost of Rs.1,763 crore with financial assistance from World Bank. The main objective of this project is to create an inclusive society by promoting accessibility through creation of barrier-free structures and employment opportunities through vocational training. The project will be implemented in 15 districts in 2023-24. At the divisional level, 39 One Stop social care service centres will be established to provide services including disability assessment, certification and early intervention. Further, 150 neighbourhood centres manned by volunteers will be set up to provide treatment at home and assistance in availing benefits under various welfare schemes.
For the benefit of the 6.84 lakh differently abled persons across the State, the Hon‟ble Chief Minister has already issued orders to increase the pension from Rs.1,000 to Rs.1,500 and the maintenance allowance from Rs.1,500 to Rs.2,000 for severely affected persons with disabilities. Towards this, a sum of Rs.1,444 crore has been allotted in the Budget.
The State Government is providing guarantee and interest subsidy for the development of enterprises of differently abled persons. Through these initiatives, Tamil Nadu has facilitated loan assistance to 11,155 differently abled persons to the tune of Rs.50 crore through National Handicapped Finance Development Corporation this year, placing Tamil Nadu in the first place in the Country.
The Government is developing a comprehensive database of differently abled persons to ensure effective delivery of benefits under Government schemes. In the first phase, a database of 9,08,000 persons who are benefitting from various welfare schemes has been created.
The Government has been taking various steps to improve the functioning of Backward Class and Most Backward Class hostels by upgrading infrastructure, and providing nutritious food. In the last two years, works for the construction of 9 hostels at a cost of Rs.36.25 crore are being implemented. Further, based on the requirements of students, fifteen school hostels have been upgraded as college hostels.
In the Budget Estimates, a sum of Rs.252 crore has been allocated towards Pre-Matric and Post-Matric scholarship schemes. An amount of Rs.305 crore has been earmarked towards distribution of bicycles to students. A sum of Rs.1,580 crore has been allocated to the Backward Class, Most Backward Class, Denotified Communities and Minorities Department.
Following the ancient Tamil tradition, many leaders of the Tamil society have introduced pioneering schemes to eradicate poverty and promote the educational development of students. In 1920, Sir Pitti Theagarayar, the then chairman of the Chennai Municipal Corporation introduced mid-day meal programme in Chennai for the first time in the Country. During Perunthalaivar Kamarajar‟s tenure as the Chief Minister, the mid-day meal scheme was expanded at the state level, marking a transformational change in the history of education in Tamil Nadu. This was followed by further efforts to eliminate hunger including the Nutritious Meal Programme by Puratchi Thalaivar MGR and the scheme to provide eggs along with nutritious meals by Muthamizharignar Kalaignar.
At this juncture, it has come to light that some children studying in Government schools are suffering from stunted growth and malnutrition. Recognizing that students may be unable to concentrate on studies as they come hungry to schools without eating breakfast, the Hon‟ble Chief Minister launched the „Chief Minister‟s Breakfast Scheme‟ last year, which is the landmark scheme of this Dravidian Model Government founded on social justice. This historic scheme was inaugurated on September 15, the birth anniversary of Perarignar Anna.
The Chief Minister‟s Breakfast Scheme is being implemented in 1937 Government Primary Schools and it is benefitting 1,48,315 students studying from Class I to Class V. Out of the 1,543 Elementary schools,where the scheme was implemented in the first phase, the attendance of students has increased in 1,319 schools. The attendance has increased by 10per cent in 624 schools, 20per cent in 462 schools and 30per cent in 193 schools. In Tiruppathur, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Tiruvarur districts, attendance of students has increased in all the schools where the Breakfast scheme was implemented. To translate the noble vision of the Hon‟ble Chief Minister that we will make any sacrifice to ensure that no child remains hungry while learning and to make learning joyful and education universal, the Chief Minister‟s Breakfast Scheme will be expanded to cover all the 30,122 Government primary schools in the State from the coming academic year. Rs.500 crore is allotted for this scheme in this Budget which will benefit 18 lakh students studying from Class I to Class V.
Educated women are essential for a prosperous and self-sufficient society. Well aware of this, Muthamizharignar Kalaignar introduced the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Marriage Assistance Scheme in 1989 to promote women's education. Realizing that many girls from poor families in Tamil Nadu are unable to continue higher education after completing 12th standard, this Government has redesigned the scheme as Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Pudhumai Penn Scheme, under which all girl students studying from 6th to 12th standard in Government schools are provided Rs.1000 rupees per month for their higher education. At present, 2.20 lakh girl students are benefitting under this scheme every month. Compared to the year 2021-22, 29 per cent more girls have entered colleges this year, which is an addition of 20,477 girl students. The fact that the many girls who did not pursue higher education after completing their schooling have now enrolled in colleges is a testimony to the success of this scheme.
The self-help group movement, that was pioneered by Muthamizharignar Kalaignar in the country in 1989 at Dharmapuri, has today blossomed into a massive people‟s movement. This Government is undertaking several measures for capacity building and livelihood development of women self-help groups. In the current year, so far, women self-help groups have received bank loans of around Rs.24,712 crore. In the coming financial year, a target of Rs 30,000 crore has been set for credit linkage to SHGs.
Women entrepreneurs continue to face difficulties in accessing adequate, timely credit and marketing of products. To address these challenges, the Government will establish an exclusive „Start-up Mission‟ for women. This mission will facilitate women entrepreneurs in all aspects of their business.
Since 2021-22, a total of 213 godowns have been constructed with a storage capacity of 2.86 lakh MT at a combined cost of Rs.238 crore to augment storage capacity and minimize losses. Further, 12 godowns with a storage capacity of 28,000 MT are being constructed at a total cost of Rs.54 crore.
To meet the liabilities of the important poll promises fulfilled by this Government, a sum of Rs.2,393 crore for the waiver of agricultural loans, a sum of Rs.1,000 crore for the waiver of jewel loans and a sum of Rs.600 crore for waiving self-help group loans, totalling an amount of Rs.3,993 crore has been allotted in the Budget.
The Government will frame a comprehensive long-term plan to carry out structural reforms in Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation to improve efficiency in operations and fiscal sustainability. An amount of Rs.10,500 crore has been provided in this Budget towards Food Subsidy in the Public Distribution System. An allocation of Rs.16,262 crore has been made to the Co-operation, Food and Consumer Protection Department in this Budget. The Government is taking several efforts to restore and rejuvenate the water bodies. Under Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation Project, the Government has sanctioned rehabilitation works in 341 tanks, 67 anicuts and 11 canals at an estimated cost of Rs.462 crore. Further, repair, renovation and restoration works are being undertaken in 309 tanks at an estimated cost of Rs.258 crore.
Long term flood mitigation works are being undertaken at a cost of Rs.184 crore in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Cuddalore. Of these, 9 works have been completed and 2 works are in progress. In the current year, 12 flood mitigation works have been undertaken in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Thiruvallur districts at a total cost of Rs.434 crore.
The Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board, under the chairmanship of the Hon'ble Chief Minister, has been restructured to promote the welfare of animals in the State. In order to control the burgeoning street dog population, it is necessary to set up Animal Breeding Control Centres. To strengthen and improve the effectiveness of the Animal Welfare Board, an amount of Rs.10 crore has been provided in the Budget. This fund will be used to carry out animal breeding control activities, provide training to local Government employees and implement animal welfare activities.
This Government is empathetic to the welfare and special needs of fisher folk and has increased the special allowance during lean months to Rs.6,000 from Rs.5,000. An allocation of Rs.389 crore has been made to benefit 4.3 lakh beneficiaries for implementing the fishermen welfare schemes such as Lean period assistance, Ban period relief assistance and Savings cum Relief schemes.
Coral reefs provide shelter and food to fish and increase the probability of survival of fingerlings. To improve the livelihood of country craft fishermen, 217 units of artificial reefs will be established at a cost of Rs.79 crore in the 3 Palk Bay districts and 200 units will be set up at a cost of Rs.64 crore in other districts.
Due to increasing vagaries of climate change and pressure caused by the burgeoning population, the coastal ecosystem and the livelihood of coastal population are likely to be severely affected in the near future. The Government will implement the „Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission‟ with the objective of preventing sea erosion, reducing marine pollution and conserving marine biodiversity. The mission will be implemented with World Bank assistance at an estimated cost of Rs.2,000 crore in the next 5 years.
A contiguous stretch of protected forests is essential to protect endangered wildlife. The Government will notify a new wildlife sanctuary „Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary‟, with an extent of 80,567 hectares in the forest areas of Anthiyur and Gobichettipalayam Taluks in Erode district to link the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve with Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary. This will be the 18th wildlife sanctuary in the State.
Tamil Nadu is located in the Central Asian Flyway and hosts a large number of migratory birds every year. In order to promote conservation of birds, encourage research in the field of ornithology and create awareness about the role of birds in nature, the Government shall set up an „International Bird Centre‟ at Marakkanam at an estimated cost of Rs.25 crore.

The Yankees have a long and proud history of Italian-American greats... DiMaggio, Berra, Rizzuto, Lazzeri, and of course, the late Joe Pepitone, just to name a few of the many.
If you were a Yankee fan in the 1980s, you'd have Dave Righetti and Rick Cerone on that list. Probably not Paul Mirabella. But without Mirabella, you might not have had Righetti and Cerone!
Paul Thomas Mirabella today turns 69 (nice). A Jersey kid through and through, he was born March 20, 1954, in Belleville... graduated from Parsippany High School... and then went to Montclair State University.
The Texas Rangers took him in the 1st round (#21 overall) of the 1976 January Draft. (The January Draft was held between 1966 and 1985 and was for high school and college players who graduated in winter instead of spring; most of the top talent was taken in the June draft.)
Mirabella, a 6'1", 190-pound lefthander, moved quickly and efficiently through the Rangers system. He went 10-7 with a 3.99 ERA in A-ball in 1976, 12-7 with a 3.84 ERA in Double-A in 1977, and 9-6 with a 3.97 ERA in Triple-A in 1978. The Rangers called him up at the end of July and in his debut got the win in a 9-5 slugfest against the White Sox (despite giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks in 7.2 innings). Four days later, the Jersey boy made his debut at Yankee Stadium, pitching an inning of mopup relief in an 8-1 Rangers loss. Mirabella got three outs but gave up a solo home run to Reggie Jackson. Overall that season, he was 3-2 with a 5.79 ERA (66 ERA+) and 1.679 WHIP. Not impressive numbers, but he was still just 24 years old.
Meanwhile, the Yankees -- after winning their third straight pennant, and second straight World Series -- wanted to trade disgruntled reliever Sparky Lyle. The mustachioed lefty had been the Yankee closer since 1972, but in 1978 -- a year after winning the Cy Young Award -- was demoted to setup man after the Yankees added a guy with an even better mustache, Goose Gossage. ("You went from Cy Young to Sayanora," Graig Nettles memorably quipped.) Lyle was working on a book, The Bronx Zoo, about the tumultuous 1976-1978 Yankees dynasty. It would be published a few months after the Yankees traded Lyle to the Rangers as part of a 10-player deal: Lyle, Mike Heath, Larry McCall, Dave Rajsich, and Domingo Ramos for Greg Jemison, Juan Beniquez, Mike Griffin, Dave Righetti, and... Paul Mirabella.
Most of the players involved didn't amount to much. Lyle at this point was just a guy -- he was worth 1.4 bWAR for the Rangers over the next two seasons. Heath was immediately flipped to the A's. McCall would only pitch in two games for the Rangers before ending his career in the minors. Rajsich was -0.1 bWAR in two seasons. Ramos was sold to the Blue Jays.
Righetti alone was worth what the Yankees gave up -- over his 11 years in pinstripes, he had a 3.11 ERA (127 ERA+) and 1.295 WHIP with a 74-61 record and 224 saves (22.9 bWAR). The 1981 Rookie of the Year, a two-time All-Star, and let's not forget his a July 4th no-hitter against the Red Sox!
But at the time, the Yankees' top return was seen as Mirabella, not Righetti. After all, Rags was a 20-year-old starter who had never pitched above Double-A and didn't seem to figure into the Yankee plans in 1979. He would be a September call-up that year but not make the rotation until 1981.
Mirabella was seen as Lyle's replacement as the team's top left-handed reliever -- in fact, going into the season, he was the team's only left-handed reliever. (The Yankees would later trade for veteran lefties Don Hood and Jim Kaat for bullpen help.)
Mirabella's Yankee career got off to a good start -- he allowed just one unearned run in his first four appearances, with four hits and two walks in 6.2 innings. But then he was hammered in a loss to the Orioles on April 19, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks in four innings of relief.
He got four more relief appearances, giving up a total of eight runs on four hits and four walks, leaving him with a 7.24 ERA to this point in the season, and was sent to Triple-A. Put back into the rotation, he again did what he had did in the Tigers organization -- he was good but not dominant, going 11-7 with a 3.88 ERA and 1.243 WHIP in 144.0 innings, including throwing a four-hitter and a three-hitter over the course of six days.
For what it was worth, he was seen as the top starter in Columbus, and in the International League playoffs he started and won Game 1 and Game 6 as the Clippers won the Governor's Cup in a six-game series.
Still just 25 years old, and with a pretty good minor league track record, Mirabella was still seen as a pitcher with potential. After the Triple-A post-season, he was called back up and given the start on September 18. He gave up three runs on three hits (two home runs) and two walks, and that would be his last appearance as a Yankee... in part because of a franchise-shaking tragedy that had occurred a month earlier.
On August 2, Thurman Munson was killed in a plane crash in Ohio, leaving the Yankees without a starting catcher. Two months before the Yankee captain died, the Yankees had traded away veteran backup Cliff Johnson, leaving as the only catcher on the roster a 23-year-old rookie, Jerry Narron. The day after Munson's death, the Yankees called up from Columbus another 23-year-old rookie, Brad Gulden, and when rosters expanded in September added a third rookie, 25-year-old Bruce Robinson. The three young catchers combined for a woeful .167/.224/.260 line in 254 plate appearances.
Heading into the 1980 season, the Yankees needed a starting catcher. The player they wanted was another Jersey kid, a Seton Hall University All-American who had been selected 7th overall by the Indians in the 1975 draft. In 1977, the Blue Jays traded for him and turned him into their starting catcher. Despite hitting just .229/.285/.328 in three years with the Jays, the 25-year-old Rick Cerone was the player the Yankees wanted.

"I don't know who you could get who is any better," says Yankee batting coach Charley Lau. "And those who might be better might not be available. Who is there? The guy in Kansas City (Darrell Porter) and the guy in Texas (Jim Sundberg) and maybe the guy in Detroit (Lance Parrish). Who else? Fisk, but he might not be able to catch anymore. I think we have the perfect guy."

In retrospect, it looked a little foolish to put that much of a burden on Cerone, to that point in his career a 66 OPS+ hitter. But the Yankees liked what they saw defensively, they liked his maturity, and that over the second half of the season he hit an almost-respectable .261/.283/.419.
To get him -- and also pitcher Tom Underwood and minor league outfielder Ted Wilborn -- the Yankees gave up the 30-year-old Chris Chambliss, whom the Jays immediately traded to the Braves where he hit .272/.345/.422 (110 OPS+) over the next seven seasons; a 22-year-old minor league infielder named Damaso Garcia who would later be an All-Star second baseman in Toronto; and... Paul Mirabella.
It was a lot to give up, but Cerone would give the Yankees everything they could hope for... at least in 1980. That year he caught 147 games, hit .277/.321/.432 (107 OPS+), and led the league in throwing out basestealers (51.8%). In the post-season, he went 4-for-12 with a home run as the Yankees lost to the Royals. It was, by far, his career year. The next four seasons would not go as well, with Cerone hitting .227/.271/.304 (62 OPS+), and he was traded after the 1984 season to the Braves for pitcher Brian Fisher. He later returned to the Yankees in 1987 and 1990. Although a fan favorite, he'd never again put up the numbers he did that first season in pinstripes.
As for Mirabella. The Blue Jays put Paul in the rotation, and over his first eight starts he looked pretty good, going 4-2 with a 2.28 ERA. But then he had five straight losses, giving up 25 runs (23 earned) in 22.1 innings. He spent the rest of the season shuffling between the bullpen and the rotation. In retrospect, it's pretty obvious how Mirabella should have been used: he had a 4.98 ERA, 1.740 WHIP as a starter, but 0.89 ERA, 1.230 WHIP as a reliever. Finally teams figured it out, and over the next 10 seasons of his career, he would make just six more starts, compared to 239 relief appearances.
After two years in Toronto, he'd spend a year in Texas, one in Baltimore, and three in Seattle. He had his best seasons at the end of his career, pitching four years with the Brewers (then an American League team), going 8-5 with a 3.63 ERA and 1.399 WHIP in 163.2 innings. His best season came in 1988, with a 1.65 ERA and 1.083 WHIP in 60.0 innings.
Over his 13-year career, Mirabella was 19-29 with a 4.45 ERA (92 ERA+) and 1.531 WHIP in 499.2 innings pitched. (In nine years of Triple-A, he was 48-37 with a 3.81 ERA.) For his career, he had a 6.02 ERA and 1.841 WHIP as a starter... and 3.77 ERA, 1.397 WHIP as a reliever. Had he stayed with the Yankees -- who, after all, had wanted to use him as their left-handed setup man to replace Sparky Lyle -- he likely would have experienced success much earlier in his career.
He underwent shoulder surgery in 1989, briefly pitched in the Senior Professional Baseball Association, and then retired after the 1990 season at age 36.
Much More Mirabella:

• Mirabella is one of three major leaguers to have graduated from Parsippany High School -- the others are Mike Maksudian, who had 41 at-bats for three different teams between 1992 and 1994 but is better known for eating bugs to gross out his teammates; and Richie Zisk, who hit .287/.353/.466 (127 OPS+) in 5,737 PAs in a 13-year career but apparently did not eat bugs. There's also Joe Orsulak, who played 14 years and hit .273/.324/.374 (93 OPS+) in 4,714 PAs, but he went to crosstown rival Parsippany Hills.
  
• In 1969, the Yankees drafted outfielder Larry Pyle in the 1st round (#2 overall) of that year's January draft. Pyle, another Parsippany High School grad, was an All-American at the University of Miami but hit just .231/.329/.373 in three seasons of Double-A and was released in 1971 at the age of 23. The first Hurricane baseball player to be named an All-American, in 1989 Pyle was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
  
• Nine players from Montclair State University have reached the majors, including Yankee first baseman and 1976 playoff hero Chris Chambliss... who was traded with Mirabella to Toronto, though Chambliss would be quickly traded again, to Atlanta.
  
• And let's not forget Montclair State University is home of the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center!
  
• Parsippany High School's mascot when Mirabella, Maksudian, Zisk, and Pyle were there was the Redskins. Montclair State's mascot was the Indians (and when they won the 1987 NCAA Division III national championship, they wore caps with the "smiling Indian" logo of the Cleveland Indians). Coincidentally, Montclair State became the Red Hawks in 1989, and Parsippany High School became the Redhawks in 2001.
  
• Mirabella is listed on baseball-reference.com as having worn #50, #55, and #36 for the Yankees, but other sources only have him wearing #36, and any jerseys I've found for him online have him wearing #36. The April 21, 1979, issue of The Sporting News listed Mirabella as wearing #36, so if he ever wore another number, it was either in spring training or during his September call-up. The number was most famously worn by David Cone from 1995-2000, but also Carlos Beltran, Nick Johnson, Tom Gordon, and both Rich Dotson and Pat Dobson.
  
• And he doesn't have a nickname on baseball-reference, but according to a 1989 article in the Chicago Tribune, Mirabella's nickname was "Bells."
  
• The Sporting News reported on February 17, 1979, that the Yankees were working on a deal with the Minnesota Twins -- Chris Chambliss and Juan Beniquez for Rod Carew. The deal fell through because the Twins also wanted either Dave Righetti or... Paul Mirabella. "The Yankees declared them untouchable," the article said. The Twins also asked for an infielder, Damaso Garcia or Rex Hudler, and the Yankees wouldn't budge on either one. In the end, they couldn't agree on terms and Carew was traded to the Angels. Pretty much the same package -- Chambliss, Garcia, and Mirabella -- went to the Blue Jays a year later to bring back Cerone.
  
• On September 18, 1979, Mirabella, Rick Anderson, and Bob Kammeyer were lit up in a 16-3 rout by the Indians. After an ugly 4th inning in which Kammeyer, a 28-year-old rookie, gave up eight runs without recording an out -- an MLB record -- Yankees manager Billy Martin was spotted in the dugout handing Kammeyer five $20 bills. Martin would tell reporters that he gave Kammeyer the money to take out Mirabella and Anderson so they could get drunk and forget the nightmarish game. The Indians alleged the payment was a bounty for hitting former Yankee Cliff Johnson with a pitch during the eight-run inning. That disastrous performance would be the last time Mirabella, Anderson, or Kammeyer pitched as a Yankee. (For Kammeyer, his last in the majors.)
  
• Paul was pitching for the Rangers in 1978 when he and his fiancée, Diane, set their wedding date for the following October. When Mirabella was traded to the Yankees that off-season, he immediately told her they'd have to reschedule the wedding: now that he was on the Yankees, he'd be busy that month! Alas, it was not to be, as the Yankees would miss the playoffs for the first time since 1975, finishing 13.5 games out.
  
• When he was traded to the Yankees, Mirabella told The New York Times that his dad had pitched in the minors for the Brooklyn Dodgers and was still a Dodgers fan. "The World Series last fall was hard on him," Mirabella said, as the Yankees beat the Dodgers in six games.
  
• After being traded to Toronto, George Steinbrenner accused the Blue Jays of "tanking" because they... were starting Mirabella! In 1980, the Yankees and Orioles were in a tight pennant race, with the Yankees holding onto a game and a half lead at the start of September. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, were dead last. On September 8-10, the Yankees played the Blue Jays in Toronto in a hard-fought three-game series, taking two out three by the scores of 7-4, 4-6, and 7-6. In the series, the Jays started All-Star Dave Stieb and future All-Star Jim Clancy (and those were the games the Yankees won; they lost the middle game to journeyman Jackson Todd). After that series, the Blue Jays hosted the Orioles while the Yankees played the Red Sox in Boston, each a four-game set. The Blue Jays started Mirabella in Game 1 and he was bombed for four runs on six hits and a walk in 1.2 innings in a 6-1 loss. The Game 2 starter was going to be 23-year-old Joey McLaughlin. Steinbrenner, in Boston, bitched to A.L. President Lee MacPhail -- and then to reporters -- that the Blue Jays were tanking against the Orioles. "The Yankees had gone to Toronto and faced Clancy and Stieb. George only said that he hoped Baltimore faced the same pitchers the Yankees did," said MacPhail, rather diplomatically -- prior to becoming league president, he had been in the front office of both the Yankees and the Orioles. The Blue Jays in response complained to Commissioner Bowie Kuhn about Steinbrenner, requesting "a full investigation of comments, alleged to have been made by George Steinbrenner, to members of the New York and Boston media concerning the pitching rotation used by the Blue Jays against the Baltimore Orioles." The mini controversy quickly fizzled out as the Yankees swept the Red Sox while the Orioles split with the Blue Jays, and the Yankees would win the A.L. East by three games.
  
• It's too bad Mirabella and Cerone were traded for each other and never played on the same team. Two Italian kids from North Jersey in the 1980s, we can only imagine the epic discussions they'd have about IROCs, Dan Marino, and Wildwood vs. Seaside Heights. Fuhgeddaboudit!

Glenil’s ears twitched towards his holopad as it pinged. His girlfriend, Amelia, had sent a couple messages in rapid succession.
“Hey, hon. How are you? I’m going to a Krakotl bar tonight.” Glenil’s tail flicked in surprise; he hadn’t realized she’d made a Krakotl friend. Before he could compose a response, she sent another few single-sentence messages.
“Talva invited Mariah and I to go meet a friend of hers at some Krakotl bar. She said the bartender is welcoming, but I’m just nervous about it, you know? Mariah said she might not even go, but I already agreed. I just hate when people act like I’m a monster.”
He waited a moment to see if more was incoming, but it appeared she’d finished. “Do you want me to come? I have work to finish up, but I can meet you afterwards.” He typed back.
“Well, the friend’s going through a breakup, so I think it might be a little thoughtless for me to invite you and shove my own relationship in her face.”
Glenil chuckled. Amelia was too considerate for her own good. He might even know the friend in question, in which case his status as Amelia’s boyfriend would be moot. “You know me just existing in the same room as you doesn’t count as gloating, right? Do you know the friend’s name? Talva and I have some friends in common, I might know her.”
“Jaisa? I don’t know if I’m spelling that right.”
Ah, Jaisa. She’d started seeing some Krakotl guy right after she and Glenil had decided to stop courting. Stars, it had been a long time since they’d hung out.
“I know Jaisa! I haven’t seen her in years, it will be good to tend that friendship back into bloom.”
Across the city in her bedroom, Amelia stared at her holopad. How could he possibly be this dense? Was she really going to have to explain the concept of a girl’s night to this usually-intelligent man? She typed out an explanation she hoped was both firm yet patient around why he couldn’t just invite himself along, but paused before she sent it.
She was an academic, after all, trained to question her own biases. Was it possible that literal space aliens might have different cultural expectations with social gatherings immediately after a big breakup? She rolled her eyes. As certain as she felt that this was a no-boys-allowed outing, she may as well do her due diligence and ask.
To her surprise, Talva thought Jaisa would be glad to see Glenil. “They’ve been friends forever! He’s probably seen her more recently than I had until last night. Her schedule’s been difficult to align with. I bet you’d feel more comfortable with your mate there, too!”
Amelia wrinkled her nose; the Venlil habit of referring to a romantic partner as a ‘mate’ made her skin crawl. “That’s true. I just didn’t want to be selfish bringing my partner when she’s just been through heartbreak.”
“Oh, Amelia, don’t be silly! You wouldn’t expect your friends not to bring their mates to see you if you went through a breakup — that would be cutting your herd in half!”
Amelia opened her mouth and then shut it again. She hadn’t thought of it that way.
“I see what you’re saying. My culture just thinks about it differently, I guess. When we’re heartbroken, I guess it can be hard for us to deal with the jealousy. It can feel even worse to see a lovestruck couple next to you, wishing you had that, and then feeling guilty for not just being happy for them.”
Talva’s tail wagged empathetically. “I can understand that. But the social support of your herd is worth dealing with those negative thoughts.”
Amelia nodded. “I’m glad I talked to you before I told Glenil not to come, then. It would be awful if he thought I was trying to cut him off from his herd.”
Talva’s ears flattened in disapproval. “Yeah, that would have been a bad move, Amelia. Jealousy is never a good look. Just tell him to come by the Roost at third claw, he’ll know where it is. By the way, have you heard from Mariah today? I invited her but I haven’t heard back from her.”
Amelia looked at the floor and cleared her throat. “Uh… Yeah, she… well. You know her family was killed by Krakotl bombs. I’ll be honest, I’m nervous about going, but it’s even more personal for her. Lagos is completely gone because of them. She has one cousin that’s here on Venlil Prime, and a second cousin that was studying in Washington, DC, but she lost every single other member of her family to the bombs that fell on Nigeria. She’s not sure if she can handle it, emotionally.”
Talva’s tail tucked itself between her legs. “I understand. I’m so sorry. Why didn’t she tell me no herself?”
“She might be afraid of disappointing you, Talva.”
Talva’s ears folded down in distress. “I’ll message her an apology right now. I should have realized this would be too much for her, given what the Krakotl did to her people.”
A moment later, her holopad pinged, and Talva’s ears flicked back in shock. “She said, ‘No. I will not allow my heart to be hardened by hate. Your friend was not one of the ones that attacked Earth. I will come.’”

Amelia took several deep breaths into her diaphragm as she, Mariah and Talva approached the famous Krakotl bar. “You’re sure the bartender knows we’re coming?”
“Yes, I’m sure. When he heard me saying I had human friends, he asked me to invite you. He said he wanted a chance for humans to see that not all Krakotl agree with their political leaders on Nishtal.”
Amelia nodded nervously. “Right. He’s right! I agree. And Glenil is coming as soon as he’s finished with his work for the day. Never mind me, I’m just nervous.”
“I feel as though I’m walking into the lion’s den,” Mariah confessed. “But, my people have a saying. He who would hold another down in the mud must stay in the mud to keep him down.”
“It’s not wise to carry a grudge?” Amelia asked.
“Exactly. If anyone has a problem, that problem lies with them, not us. We just have to show them who we are.”
Talva patted both of their shoulders comfortingly. “If anyone does have a problem, Kisoar will deal with it. The bigger thing you should worry about is one of these pushy avians flirting with you,” she joked.
From the outside, the building that housed Venlil Prime’s most well-regarded Krakotl bar was similar to its neighbors in structure. It was several stories tall, with a main storefront at the ground level. Rows of painted azure and turqouise waves, bright, green, swirling geometric designs, and tropical yellow and red wing motifs covered the entire building. Music with a swelling base and chirping harmonies gently filled the building. No one could mistake this for a typical Venlil establishment.
The humans’ heads tilted back uncomfortably to peer upwards at where the ceiling should have been. The proprietor had evidently purchased the entire building and removed the superfluous floors in favor of vertically arranged seating. Light streamed in through windows on every story to illuminate the equally colorful mosaic perches and the spectacularly feathered patrons who perched on them.
Wingbeats drowned out the sound of the music as virtually every group in the bar took to the air to resettle on the highest perches. One lone avian who had been perched near the door swooped down towards them. The humans startled back as Talva called out, “Hi Jaisa, it’s good to see you! These are my friends Amelia and Mariah— oh, stars, are you okay?”
Amelia had managed to halt her flinching after a mere half a skip backwards, but Mariah tripped over her own feet and nearly fell to the ground. Her chocolate brown skin flushed a deep red as she realized the bird was simply coming over to say hello, and not diving in to attack.
Amelia filled the awkward silence with a stuttered greeting as Mariah picked herself up and adjusted her clothing. “Hi, sorry, hi! I, uh, I’m Amelia, this is Mariah. Are you Jaisa?”
Jaisa’s feathers ruffled in amusement that she didn’t bother hiding; she figured the humans wouldn’t know Krakotl body language. “Yes. Greetings Mariah and Amelia, and hello Talva. It’s good to see you.”
The four women crossed to the bar on foot. Despite her narrow field of vision, Mariah could feel eyes staring down at her back. She reminded herself that these Krakotl were probably fine with humans; if they weren’t, they would have left Venlil Prime months ago when the borders reopened. These people had been sharing a city with humans for too long to riot at two females entering a building. Besides, Talva had vouched for them. She was safe with her friends.
The bartender greeted them with a friendly squawk. “Talva, I’m so glad you brought your friends! Humans, I’m Kisoar, Primary Bartender here at The Roost. It’s a pleasure to have you visiting our beautiful bar. I understand your people shake manipulators as a greeting?” He extended his wing across the bar and stretched the fingertips that edged its length towards them. Amelia and Mariah took turns gently grasping his wing and pumping it up and down.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kisoar, I’m Amelia. Thank you for suggesting Talva invite us. We’re honored to be here.”
“I’m Mariah. Thank you for welcoming us. Your place here is gorgeous.”
Kisoar smoothed his feathers approvingly. “Now, what can I get you ladies? I know you want an algae bloom, Jaisa. Something Venlil for you, Talva?” At Talva’s grateful ear flick, he pulled out a clear jug of something that Amelia would only go near to clean biohazards. “And for you two?”
“I’d love to try an algae bloom,” Amelia said shyly. “That’s a traditional Krakotl drink, right?”
“That’s our heirloom brew!”
“I’ll have that as well, then,” Mariah added, more confidently than she felt.
“Alright, three blooms and a glass of 80% coming right up.” As Talva pulled out her chip to pay, he shook his wings in what looked like a negative. “This one’s on the house, ladies. Want to make our newcomers welcome.”
They thanked him and made their way to a ground-level table. Amelia cautiously sniffed at her drink. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it smelled like salty, boozy pond water. Well. She’d come to this planet in the express hope of experiencing new things. She lifted her drink to eye level.
“To new friends!”
Mariah and Talva repeated back the sentiment and clinked their glasses against Amelia’s. A brief moment later, Jaisa followed suit, and then they all sipped from their drinks.
“That’s the human custom of cheers,” Talva explained to Jaisa, as Amelia desperately tried to control her facial reaction to the green sludge. “It’s like a prayer offered before you drink, where you dedicate it to a specific purpose. I think the default is usually ‘to cheer,’ but sometimes they vary it for the occasion.”
“That is a lovely custom,” Jaisa said. “I’m honored to partake in your customary beverage dedication, humans. What do you think of the algae blooms?”
Mariah smiled back. “It’s a taste profile I’ve never had before. Kind of like if you mixed nori seaweed soup, borscht, and lager together. It’s delicious!”
Jaisa crowed delightedly. “It’s rare to meet a non-Krakotl with good taste!”
Amelia hesitated. She felt certain that half the bar was listening intently to their conversation, but she just wasn’t a good enough liar to pretend she liked the stuff. “I think sweeter drinks may be more my style,” she admitted.
“Perhaps you’ll like it more as the alcohol kicks in!” Mariah quipped.
Jaisa bobbed her head assertively. “It’s true, once you drink the algae bloom, that is when it truly begins to ‘bloom;’ you have to drink it in order to enjoy it!”
Talva lashed her tail in teasing disagreement. “You’ve been telling me algae blooms are an acquired taste ever since we were old enough to drink it at all, and I’m yet to change my mind on them!”
“You just need to keep trying! I know they taste different from what you’re used to, but if you’re open to it, you’ll learn to appreciate it!”
“Personally, sweet’s never been my thing.” Mariah said. “This drink is great. I bet it’s healthy, too.”
“My grandmother always said algae blooms were healing. The Zurulians can try and say alcohol has negative effects, but they’re wrong when it comes to Krakotl liquor!”
Mariah looked around the room appreciatively. “The mosaics are stunning. The colors remind me of the artwork from my own country.”
“I’ve never been in a place like this before,” Amelia agreed. “I guess that’s obvious, since humans can’t fly.”
Jaisa preened. She couldn’t imagine how awful it must be to be confined to the ground, but other species seemed to handle the psychological blow well enough. “Yes, the Venlil prefer more cozy spaces than we Krakotl do. We like light and air.”
“We like light and air, too,” Talva laughed. “We just don’t need eight stories of it above our heads to feel free.”
“So, humans, tell me. Is human architecture as den-like as the Venlil’s?”
“In my home country, we traditionally build round homes with thick, insulating walls and a tall thatched roof to keep the inside shaded and cool. But of course, with modern architecture and building materials, we build all sorts of things across the world.” Mariah said.
“I’m from Virginia, and we like to build airy wooden houses with tall columns around them, painted white. But I moved to New York for university and work, and there, they build squat rowhomes out of brick and stone, and tall skyscrapers hundreds of stories tall of cement and glass,” Amelia told her.
“You changed tribes?” Jaisa asked. “You weren’t scared of retribution for betraying your tribe?”
Mariah and Amelia glanced at each other and burst out laughing. “Of course not! Virginia and New York are both in the United States of America, first of all, so they’re both in the same country. But also, humans leave their hometowns and home countries all the time. We’re proud of our cultural groups, but it’s not really tribalism.”
“We also don’t call our countries tribes,” Mariah clarified. “I know that’s the word that makes the most sense in your language, but to us they’re different. I am part of the Igbo tribe, which is part of the country of Nigeria, so to me it feels strange that non-humans refer to my country as my tribe. But, I know the concept is just a bit foreign to you, so I try to understand what you mean anyway.”
“Fascinating! Do you have pictures of your homes on Earth? Unless that’s a sensitive topic—“ she cut herself off, feathers puffing up, as she realized what she’d asked.
Talva smacked Jaisa with her tail. “Of course, that’s a sensitive topic!” she hissed.
Amelia wrapped her arm around Mariah protectively and tried to decide if she should show her own photos as a distraction, or change the topic entirely.
Mariah gave her a small, tired smile. “I’m prepared for this question, you know. I have a folder of photos I can show you,” she said to the Krakotl. “Ones that won’t make me cry.”
Amelia sighed in relief and pulled out her own holopad. Both humans swiped to their respective “pictures to show aliens” folders and passed their devices back and forth with the avian female.
“You really do have gardens and everything,” she said wonderingly. “It’s beautiful. I’m so sorry for what my people…”
“No, no apologies. It wasn’t your responsibility,” Mariah told her firmly.
“But thank you. I’m glad the planet survived,” Amelia added.
Suddenly, the air compressed above their heads. Trained by years of gym class dodgeball sessions, Amelia and Mariah ducked instinctively. Talons slashed through the air where their heads had been moments before.
“These monsters sold Nishtal to the Greys!” someone cawed furiously from the air. “You want to let them take our bar, too? The pride of the Krakotl community on Venlil Prime, and you want to infest it with this predatory scum?”
Jaisa leaped into the air, screeching indignantly. She was immediately joined by someone else dropping down from an upper perch. The two birds put themselves between the attacker and the humans, cursing colorfully.
Kisoar flapped over to the angry avian. “Jonim! You want to give us Krakotl a bad name, you can go do it somewhere else,” he squawked above the noise. “Get out!”
“You want their ugly skins stinking up the place? Fine! Take the last spot you can go to get away from the predators on the whole infested planet, and just invite them in!”
“You’re making us all look bad!” shouted the bird who had joined Jaisa in jumping to the humans’ defense. “They were minding their own business, unlike you! Just go home, Jonim.”
Kisoar puffed up his tail feathers to emphasize his size. “If you want a chance to be allowed back later, you’ll leave now.”
Jonim sputtered, but folded his wings to dive to the door. “Don’t expect me to feel sorry for you when you realize the mistake you’ve made!” he screeched as he exited, slamming the door behind him.
The bar fell silent, with the exception of the flap of Kisoar’s powerful wings as he situated himself on a central perch. “If anyone else has a problem with welcoming the newest members of our community to this bar, you can leave. Bigotry is not tolerated at The Roost.”
Feathers rustled and talons shifted, but no one moved to leave or swoop down on them. After a moment, the Krakotl that had landed near Jaisa spoke up. “Jonim doesn’t speak for us any more than that pompous waste of flight Jerulim does. We’re Venlil Prime Krakotl, and we don’t hold with the Federation nonsense. Ladies, I’m Krisim. I, for one, would like to welcome you to the flock.”
“Mariah, Amelia, this is Krisim,” Jaisa chirped. “And you already know Talva.”
As Krisim awkwardly attempted a human handshake, the women were surprised to see more of the birds fluttering down from perches.
“Jaisa? Would you mind introducing me to your friends? I’ve been wanting to meet a human, too.”
The quartet of females quickly amassed an impressive audience. A few Krakotl still perched high up, as far away from the predators as possible, but it seemed a significant number of avians had been looking forward to meeting humans that they knew did not blame them for the decisions of politicians like Ambassador Jerulim.
When Glenil arrived, he searched the room for his mate. He saw her seated at a ground-floor table with a massive group of Krakotl. Her full lips were parted in a laugh, her dark brown curls tumbling back over her shoulders. She was the most beautiful creature she’d ever seen.
His tail wagged in relief to see her comfortable and making friends. After he’d noticed her anxiety when they’d initially discussed the outing, he had felt guilty for not being able to meet her earlier. He’d had no doubt in his mind that she’d flourish wherever people gave her a chance, but after his own parents had cruelly rejected her when he’d introduced them, he’d felt more protective of her in social settings. He noted a nearly-empty glass in front of her, and decided to buy her a drink before he went to greet her.
“Kisoar, it’s been a while since I’ve seen you!”
“Glenil, my friend! It has been too long. What can I tempt you with?”
“Just an 80% for me, Kisoar. And do you have tayri juice?”
“Of course.”
“Would you put half a shot of 80 in a large glass of tayri juice for my mate, please?”
“I can do that, yes. I suppose they’re on their way? May I ask what species they are, if that’s their drink of choice?”
“Oh, no, she’s here,” Glenil chuckled. He flicked his ears in Amelia’s direction. “Turns out humans are total lightweights.”
The bartender threw his head back and squawked with raucous laughter. “Thank Inatala she ordered the algae bloom and not anything stronger, then! Courting a human, eh? You always were a brave one. I wish you both the best in your relationship.”
“Thanks Kisoar,” Glenil said, handing him his credit chip for the drinks. “She’s wonderful.”
Wings beat behind him, and he heard a familiar chirp. “Glenil! Thank you for coming, I’m so happy you’re here!”
He turned as Jaisa landed and nuzzled his shoulder with her beak in the standard Krakotl hug. He returned the casual embrace in the usual manner, running his paw down her wing. There really is nothing better than seeing a good friend after a long time apart, he thought. This was a perfect opportunity to catch up with Jaisa on what she’d been doing since they broke up, and give Amelia space to focus on her new avian friends.

Vegas Community: Spring is bee swarm season. A bee swarm is not dangerous, because they are seeking a new home for the colony and are usually what we call "honey-bound", meaning they are loaded with nectar with the goal to build a new home once a location has been found.
Some local resources will say they encourage homeowners to contact an exterminator if you find a beehive in or near your home. Don't do this.
Another option for homeowners are no-kill bee rescue options run by local beekeepers, like LV Bees, another beekeeper who covers Boulder City, and many more out there.
With warmer weather and outdoor activities, the chances of a bee encounter will be higher than usual.
A few bee facts:

1. Swarms DO NOT sting, an established hive could; because they're defending their home. Pollinating bees will not sting you unless you're threatening their life, like swatting at them.
   
2. A swarm does not equate to killer bees. Swarming is the natural cycle of a bee colony reproducing. When they swarm, they are in search of a new place to call home, they are not defensive because they are what we call honey-bound, full of nectar to start the build of their new home immediately. Honeycomb doesn't magically appear out of thin air, they need to carry the "supplies" (aka nectar) with them to create the wax to build their new home.
   
3. If a bee stings you, you're too close to their hive. Scrape (do not pull or use tweezers) the stinger out with your finger nail or a credit card. If they follow you, walk away fast and get inside a small room, close the door and turn OFF the lights to be in complete darkness. Bees will fall from the air and crawl in the darkness. Bees are not good fliers. You can also blast a fan on yourself. They dislike air circulation, especially cold air. Turn off all lights, but ONE (or a window). Bees will fly towards that light. They cannot see in the dark. Take an anti-histamine and use anti-itch lotion on the sting area.
   

A natural reaction to a bee sting is swelling and itching and it can last up to a week. A true allergic reaction is when your breathing is affected, that is when you may need an epi-pen and should visit an urgent care.
It is not advised to jump into water as bees will get you when you come up for air.
If you are stung more than 10 times, you should go a quick care center or contact your personal physician and be checked out.
If you do get stung by a bee, scrape - DO NOT USE TWEEZERS - with a credit card or your nail the stinger out. A bee, stings once and dies after the stinger is torn out of her body. Apply anti-itch location and take an anti-histamine like benadryl.
A normal reaction to a bee sting is swelling and itching. An allergic reaction involves a respiratory response, like shortness of breath.
Reaction to bee venom takes several hours, which may cause you to feel sick later. People with an allergic reaction should call 9-1-1 and seek immediate medical attention.

When doing proper hive removals, beekeepers schedule them to reduce the threat of community endangerment to avoid situations going bad and spreading to affect nearby neighbors. An attack swarm will spread and beekeepers notify surrounding homes to let them know to stay indoors when a removal is happening.
How to make yourself not a target for bee stings if you're near a hive:

1. Don't wear sweet or strong smelling perfumes or cologne. Bees are driven by strong scents. If you truly want to deter bees from being near you, find or create a mildly scented lotion that has almond oil in it. You can create your own by using an unscented (or non-sweet smelling) base lotion and stirring in 1 drop of almond oil extract to 16oz of lotion. Or create an almond oil spritz with 16oz of water and 1 drop of almond oil shaken in a clean spray bottle. Mist yourself before heading outside. This is also safe for pets too.
   
2. Don't wear black. This is a controversial color topic amongst beeks, but mainly, they believe you're a black bear and will aim for dark clothing over light colored clothing. Hence why beek suits are usually white.
   
3. Don't use any loud motorized equipment near them, like a lawnmower or air blower.
   
4. Don't disturb a bee colony by throwing rocks or spraying a hose on them.
   
5. Don't disturb the ground near their hive. Ground vibrations make them defensive as they can feel them within their hive structure.
   

Helpful tips for homeowners to avoid bees taking up residence inside your home walls or your yard:

• Irrigation boxes. Seal up the access hole with a piece of steal wool. That access hole in the top of (usually green) irrigation box covers is a favorite for colonies to move into.
  
• Inspect the exterior of your home for any openings bigger than a dime. This is how they take up residence inside your home walls. Seal up any holes to avoid this situation. This includes cinder block walls. Don't use expanding foam on cinder block walls.
  
• Dead trees. If your yard has a tree that has died, get it removed. Hollowed out trees are a favorite for bee colonies. It's also one of the most labor-intensive for bee removals because we have to cut down the tree to access the colony to safely remove them. Again, don't use expanding foam for inside a dead tree!
  
• Secure your attic from the outside. Part of the exterior inspection. Any hole that is about a dime size can lead a colony to take up residence in your attic.
  
• Abandoned hot tubs. Another wonderful shelter bees love to find because it's a nice shelter with easy access through the access panel.
  
• Hollow junk. From tires, empty wooden structures like boxes, to underneath sheds and even those hollow fake rock decorations. If a scout bee can crawl through and finds the area favorable for the colony, they will move in. Clear out junk from your yard or be prepared for a colony to take residence in them. Often we find double or triple hives in backyards where people store things and are not maintained aka hoarding.
  

A very popular place bees will take cover is under your home eaves. These are much easier removals if they can be accessed by standard ladder heights. It's difficult to deter them from this area unless you want to do a weekly spray of a non-toxic substance such as Honey-B-Gone or a dilution of almond extract under your eaves.

Part I :: “The Little Church”
As I stepped inside Countryside Sabbath Fellowship, I never imagined how this place would change my outlook on faith, God, and Seventh-day Adventism as a whole. It didn’t appear to be anything out of the ordinary. It is your typical red church with a big white steeple rising high towards Heaven. A symbol of the enduring power of the love of Christ immortal. Or something like that. My eyes moved up towards the sign above the door that read The Church in the Wildwood. Perhaps it was a remnant of a previous church that had moved on? A small door led to a dining hall. Folding chairs and brown tables were set up around the room. My eyes darted left and right. Everyone here was old. Some were very old. I tapped my shoes on the rug. The gravel driveway still lingered on the bottom of each. Outside, cars loaded with the lost souls of the world rushed along Highway 395, a highway leading from Spokane to Canada.
A group of ragtag aging Adventist outcasts wandered almost aimlessly around the dining hall waiting for the morning service to start. We missed Sabbath school and in between there was a break where the members could unload their bladders and bowels, or grab a piece of church literature from a little table set up in the dining room. Sit back, light a cigar, and celebrate the fact that they are on the fast track to Heaven.
Actually, let’s go back to the cigar thing. The Adventist church has a pretty strict health message. No smoking, no drinking, no drugs, no cheese. Wait, back up a minute. I get the no smoking, drinking, and drugs thing—but no cheese? Yeah, you heard me right. I said no cheese. There’s also no hot peppers, no vinegar, no meat, and no ice cream. Now, you may be thinking that’s absurd. It may or may not be. You see, the church is famous for its health message. Cheese is to be shunned and is “not fit for food.” And that was a shame for me because I am kind of in love with cheese. There’s more though. The idea of living far out in the country, away from the cities, and being separate from society is a high ideal. Why, you ask? Well, you had to prepare for the end times, an imminent National Sunday Law, and intense persecution. Some of these issues had me struggling, but I didn’t give them too much thought. I don’t know how many did. I know that it was mentioned during sermons, and some people were obsessive about it, but during day-to-day life, most people just did the same thing as those people who were out and about on that strange Saturday morning.
What Adventism did provide for me was a way to stay close to the Lord. Although I had much to learn, I was happy in my ignorance and felt that my relationship with God was slowly growing. For me, that ignorance was bliss. How little did I know that my ignorance was about to be shattered.
As I sat there in that dining hall, with the pastor’s eyes locked on me, I thought back to my recent return from Eastern European Country. I had been a missionary in Kyiv. My job was nothing spectacular. I was just an English teacher. I loved Eastern European Country but decided to come back to the United States with my wife to live a more pastoral life. The idea was that we would consider buying property and living a more pastoral life in accordance with Ellen White’s* prophetic insight. After close to fifteen years married, we had just had a child and that child was now two years old. Seeing that the world was slated for the great and terrible day of the Lord, we thought best to begin a new phase of life and consider building ourselves a country home.
*Note: Ellen White was hit by a rock when she was a young woman. This was a very traumatic part of her life and it affected her. Like many who call themselves modern-day prophets, a traumatic event is often a springboard to purported visions and dreams. Young Ellen claimed to have visions in her weakened state and eventually a movement formed. Her power and authority grew. She wrote prolifically (with help from others) and a host of source material (and I’m not talking angels). Much of what she says is controversial, yet a lot of that is not shared in church. Many offshoots and extremists have formed that take her words as true messages from God and elevate her to a position of spiritual authority. Many of these cults are full of spiritual and sexual abuse, and many still arise in the United States and Europe, as well as developing countries around the world. Countryside is an example of such a church.
It was a happy accident that I became a missionary. Before diving head first into the Lord’s work, I had finished law school in New York City. Before that I was in San Francisco, working at In-N-Out Burger and attending college at the University of San Francisco—a Jesuit school. Not the kind of places you would expect a baptized Adventist to spend his time. Yet, I was not your everyday Adventist. As I said, I was a first-generation Adventist, and at the time I had no idea that multi-generational Adventists looked at us like we were retarded. Now I know why.
But I didn’t then.
Now the pastor was on a quick march toward me. He wore a sharp-looking grey suit. His skin had an olive complexion to it. We met at the pamphlets on a table all proclaiming the benefits of a vegan diet and how country living could help you escape end times persecution.
“Hi. I’m pastor Albert*,” he said, smiling. His smile showcased two full rows of teeth—something that not all the members of this church could claim ownership to. I shook his hand, stating that I was glad to finally meet him. I had heard a lot about this man as of late, and my in-laws were quite giddy that we were going to meet him on this holy day.
*NOTE: Albert Fletcher is the pastor at Countryside Sabbath Fellowship. Since he is a limited public figure with a vocal public church and YouTube channel, I have used his name in this book.
I was still in awe. I had traveled to around 30 countries at this point in my life, yet nothing was quite like this place. I had stood in some of the world’s greatest Buddhist temples, The huge mosques in Cairo and Istanbul, and the legendary temples of India and Thailand, and yet there was nowhere quite like this. I had read a lot about Adventism as it existed back in the early days, and this place reminded me a bit of how that must have looked. Observing this church, I realized that it seemed like something out of “pure” Adventism. Something like one would see back at the very beginning when the rock had just struck Ellen White, and the prophecies were flowing like sweet milk and honey.
My wife’s parents had been singing the praises of his church for the better part of a year now. Yet, I just did not understand it. I thought back to the days when they were active in the Deer Park church. The father-in-law in particular was quite involved there. He would work with the Sabbath school classes, and play the piano during service. Both he and his wife had forged many friendships during the decades. It was the church their children were baptized in and their grandchildren were dedicated to the Lord in. Why did they leave for this new church? What changed? And why didn’t Albert and all these old guys just go there for Sabbath worship? There was plenty of room in the pews. The potluck tables still had room for them. They could make themselves useful in aspects of church outreach. Something seemed strange about it.
As Albert stood there, shaking my hand, I could not deny that he seemed charismatic and kind. There was a level of energy to him that radiated. His big smile was welcoming and warm. As our hands parted, his wife rushed over. We are going to call her Kathleen, and like everyone else in this story, her name has been changed. Kathleen had wispy white hair and a frail physique. Her voice was also warm. Motherly even. “It’s great to meet you.” She spoke slower than her husband but was still bubbly. Her smile matched her husband’s. “We’ve heard a lot about you both,” she said.
“We hope it’s good,” I said, laughing a little. I had been married to my wife for 15 years at this point. When it came to my in-laws, I just “went with the flow.” Freddy, my wife’s father, is known to be an easily riled and opinionated man who finds being right to be the pinnacle of importance. To say we have clashed over the years has been an understatement. He never really took to me, but the truth is, he clashed with all of his sons and every man who dated one of his five daughters. My wife happened to be the youngest. My life choices never really seemed to please him, and to say we were opposites also is an understatement. He loved the country, working on mechanics, hated change of any kind, and was—and I’m just being honest here—easily given to conspiracy theories. I, on the other hand, loved the city and traveling. I thrived under constant change and had no desire to bother with mechanics. Moreover, I hated conspiracy theories and didn’t even like to talk about them. His wife was a much quieter woman, although not the silent type. She took a back seat to him in most matters, likely wondering what it was that would set him off next. As his top would blow (and it often did), the little wife would tell him to “knock it off.” Those words were music to my ears, as nothing and nobody else could shut him up quite as she could. For all of our sanity, we needed her when he was about to go all Krakatoa.
“We are glad to have you here,” Albert said.
I looked back to when I started out in Eastern European Country and how we had been missionaries. I hoped that Albert liked that (at the time it was important for me to impress others). Who doesn’t like a good missionary? Yet, I felt like a failure in Eastern European Country. Nobody was baptized because of me. I didn’t feel fruitful at all. And I felt that Adventism in Eastern European Country was a bit conservative. One of our friends was pulled aside for wearing pants and told it was not right for a woman to wear pants to church. Wearing pants is a big deal in Adventism, and a lot of legendary fights have been started over pants. Just today I read an account of how one woman was called a slut for wearing dress pants to church.
As I breathed in the scent of aged wood, I thought back to the phone call I overheard in our Kyiv flat. My wife and her mother spoke about a new neighbor that had moved “all the way from Southern California” to eastern Washington. “He’s going to start his own church!” Even as a missionary, I didn’t think people really did that anymore.
“He’s an Adventist!” Darla bellowed. Darla is the name we are going to call the mother-in-law.
“I’m so glad he’s not another crazy neighbor,” she said.
Over the years, many “crazy neighbors” had moved into the area. A couple of child molesters were in the ranks, as was a guy who was borderline insane (in the clinical way). It was not uncommon to hear gunshots being fired “just because.” I don’t mean hunting or target practice, either. There were plenty of stories about people who were attracted to cheap land and who didn’t always take their pills. And that was the land we were thinking of moving to. Sheesh.
“His own church? Why?” I asked her after she hung up.
My wife didn’t really know what to say. It seemed strange to her, too. Yet not completely unfamiliar. This thing had happened before, but with someone else. They called it a “Historic Seventh-day Adventist church.” This church preached the evils of the organized modern Seventh-day Adventist church (I’m tired of typing Seventh-day Adventist and I am now going to type SDA instead for the remainder of this book). This church also preached the evils of the Jesuits (which we will get to soon), and the merits of a certain prophetess known as Ellen Gould White. With the end of the world fast approaching (even back then), it was time to “get ready get ready get ready!” They were armed to the teeth with strategies for country living, healthful eating, and books on “present truth” written by a man named Bill Hughes. Yet, not even all those armaments would help this church when it eventually fell apart.
“Your brother Stephen is such a helpful person to have here,” Kathleen said, looking over at him. He stoically stood with his bible under his arm and stared out towards the sanctuary. It was as if he was counting down every slow second before church would start, like a soldier standing at attention.
Is that so? I thought. He has never seemed very religious to me. Now, here he was, dressed sharper than I had seen him dressed, at least in a long time. I had even seen him smile! Another church member approached him and they began to speak. He took a small stack of DVDs out of his pocket and handed one to the man. He then walked over to the literature table and set the rest there.
“I’m glad to hear that,” my wife said. “it’s been VERY good for him,” Darla said, beaming with a kind of pride that says, “I think my child is going to make it into Heaven after all.”
At that point, people start to spill into the sanctuary like lemonade from a cracked cup on a hot summer day. We followed them and took a seat near the back. As we stepped through the doors leading to the holy room, I closed my eyes for a moment and let the moment wash over me. To the Countryside congregation, this room was like the Kabaa in Islam. It was a holy room where God was present every Saturday morning at 10:45. You did not run in the sanctuary. You did not spit in the sanctuary. You did not speak loudly in the sanctuary. You did not bring your donkey into the sanctuary. You did not jump up and down in the sanctuary. You did not eat cheddar or Swiss cheese in the sanctuary. This room was a large room with wood panel walls, long old pews, and sturdy authorized King James Bibles. That’s right, they were authorized! By who? King James maybe? I don’t know. The room had that thick pine scent that tickled you like grandpa’s smoking room (without the smoke). Behind you could see the mother’s room through a glass partition. On the walls were shelves of toys that would make Geoffrey the giraffe blush. Old blocks, games, cars, and all sorts of little doo-dads for the kids to play with before they were old enough to take in one of Al’s sermons were neatly lined up from the floor to ceiling. Beyond, another door leads to the foyer. Soft, diffused light shined through obscured windows. This place was truly different than the more modern SDA (I told you I’m not typing that long word anymore), churches, and even different than that Deer Park church in town.
“We only use the King James Bible here,” Albert proudly proclaimed.
“The other bibles have been corrupted by the Catholic Church,” Stephen informed me as he slipped a pamphlet my way. “Read it.”
I looked it over. I had time to spare before everyone got all comfy and the song service started. Information was methodically presented that showed in detail how certain words had been strategically omitted from the New King James and NIV Bibles. Strange and ominous imagery graced the pages of the pamphlets. These pictures were of the kind that could give a child nightmares (or lifelong PTSD).
“I’m going to read this later,” I said, sliding it into my own Bible. Thank God it happened to be a King James Bible. Otherwise, I would probably have had some explaining to do.
Then, all of the sudden, without warning, like a bomb going off, we all shot up to our feet. A younger old man was wrestling with the piano like he was possessed by some kind of demon. Up front, Albert stood erect, with his wife next to him, before the entire congregation started bellowing, in unison:
WE HAVE THIS HOPE THAT BURNS WITHIN OUR HEARTS
HOPE IN THE COMING OF THE LORD
WE HAVE THIS FAITH THAT CHRIST ALONE IMPARTS,
FAITH IN THE PROMISE OF HIS WORD
At that point, as the sanctuary was literally shaking, the tone changed. The voices got deeper. The more serious part commenced:
WE BELIEVE THE TIME IS HERE
WHEN THE NATIONS FAR AND NEAR
SHALL AWAKE, AND SHOUT, AND SING
HALLELUJAH! CHRIST IS KING!
WE HAVE THIS HOPE THAT BURNS WITHIN OUR HEARTS,
HOPE IN THE COMING OF THE LORD.

Happy Monday everyone, welcome to another UPG of the Week. In case you didn't know, Ramadan begins this week. What is Ramadan you might wonder?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer, reflection and community. A commemoration of Muhammad's first revelation, the annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam and lasts twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.
The month of Ramadan is a time when Muslims are very aware of dreams and visions. They believe dreams are a direct way that Allah chooses to reveal himself to people. During this time of heightened spiritual focus, Muslims are often seeking a special message or revelation. As Christians have prayed earnestly for their Muslim neighbors and friends during this season, they hear reports of dreams and visions in which Jesus appears to these friends and draws them to Himself.

So, that means for the entire month I will be picking Muslim peoples groups for us to be praying for!
This month, rather than going around telling Muslims to just get over their idolatry (yes yes, they worship a false god, we agree on that) I thought we could take a minute to learn about these people, to pray for them and learn how to better engage them and their beliefs! Meet the Aimaq people of Afghanistan!!

Climate: Afghanistan has a continental climate with harsh winters in the central highlands, the glaciated northeast (around Nuristan), and the Wakhan Corridor, where the average temperature in January is below −15 °C (5 °F) and can reach −26 °C (−15 °F), and hot summers in the low-lying areas of the Sistan Basin of the southwest, the Jalalabad basin in the east, and the Turkestan plains along the Amu River in the north, where temperatures average over 35 °C (95 °F) in July and can go over 43 °C (109 °F). The country is generally arid in the summers, with most rainfall falling between December and April. The lower areas of northern and western Afghanistan are the driest, with precipitation more common in the east. Although proximate to India, Afghanistan is mostly outside the monsoon zone, except the Nuristan Province which occasionally receives summer monsoon rain.
Northern Afghanistan
Terrain: The geography in Afghanistan is varied, but is mostly mountainous and rugged, with some unusual mountain ridges accompanied by plateaus and river basins. It is dominated by the Hindu Kush range, the western extension of the Himalayas that stretches to eastern Tibet via the Pamir Mountains and Karakoram Mountains in Afghanistan's far north-east. Most of the highest points are in the east consisting of fertile mountain valleys. The Hindu Kush ends at the west-central highlands, creating plains in the north and southwest, namely the Turkestan Plains and the Sistan Basin; these two regions consist of rolling grasslands and semi-deserts, and hot windy deserts, respectively. Forests exist in the corridor between Nuristan and Paktika provinces (see East Afghan montane conifer forests), and tundra in the north-east. The country's highest point is Noshaq, at 7,492 m (24,580 ft) above sea level. The lowest point lies in Jowzjan Province along the Amu River bank, at 258 m (846 ft) above sea level.
Despite having numerous rivers and reservoirs, large parts of the country are dry. The endorheic Sistan Basin is one of the driest regions in the world. The Amu Darya rises at the north of the Hindu Kush, while the nearby Hari Rud flows west towards Herat, and the Arghandab River from the central region southwards. To the south and west of the Hindu Kush flow a number of streams that are tributaries of the Indus River, such as the Helmand River. One exception is the Kabul River which flows in an easternly direction to the Indus ending at the Indian Ocean. Afghanistan receives heavy snow during the winter in the Hindu Kush and Pamir Mountains, and the melting snow in the spring season enters the rivers, lakes, and streams. However, two-thirds of the country's water flows into the neighboring countries of Iran, Pakistan, and Turkmenistan. As reported in 2010, the state needs more than US$2 billion to rehabilitate its irrigation systems so that the water is properly managed.
The northeastern Hindu Kush mountain range, in and around the Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan, is in a geologically active area where earthquakes may occur almost every year. They can be deadly and destructive, causing landslides in some parts or avalanches during the winter.

Wildlife of Afghanistan: Afghanistan has long been known for diverse wildlife. Many of the larger mammals in the country are categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as globally threatened. These include the snow leopard, Marco Polo sheep, Siberian musk deer, markhor, urial, and the Asiatic black bear. Other species of interest are the ibex, the gray wolf, and the brown bear, striped hyenas, and numerous bird of prey species.

Environmental Issues: The major environmental issues today for Afghanistan are soil degradation, air and water pollution, deforestation at an alarming rate, overgrazing, desertification, and over population in its already fragile urban areas. Thats all an aside to the fact that an oppressive radicalized terrorist government is running the nation.
Languages: Pashto and Dari are both official languages. Other languages spoken are Uzbek, English, Turkmen, Urdu, Pashayi, Nuristani, Arabic, Balochi, Ashkunu, Kamkata-viri, Vasi-vari, Tregami and Kalasha-ala, Pamiri (Shughni, Munji, Ishkashimi and Wakhi), Brahui, Qizilbash, Aimaq, and Pashai and Kyrgyz, and Punjabi.

Beliefs: The Aimaq are 0% Christian. That means out of their population of 1,685,000 there are roughly maybe a handful of true believers.
As with the great majority of Afghans, Hanafi Sunni Islam is the belief system among the Aimaq tribes. They are not averse to resorting to pre-Islamic practices if they face drought or a poor crop. In such times, virgins might perform pre-Islamic dances begging for rainfall.

History: The Aimaqs claim different origins based on their tribal background. Some claim to be descended from the troops of Genghis Khan. Other tribes such as the Taymani and Firozkohi claim descent from other Pashtun tribes.
That's all the history I could find about the Aimaq, from here below is a relatively modern history of Afghanistan in general.
Until 1946, King Zahir ruled with the assistance of his uncle, who held the post of Prime Minister and continued the policies of Nadir Shah. Another of Zahir Shah's uncles, Shah Mahmud Khan, became Prime Minister in 1946 and began an experiment allowing greater political freedom, but reversed the policy when it went further than he expected. He was replaced in 1953 by Mohammed Daoud Khan, the king's cousin and brother-in-law, and a Pashtun nationalist who sought the creation of a Pashtunistan, leading to highly tense relations with Pakistan. During his ten years at the post until 1963, Daoud Khan pressed for social modernization reforms and sought a closer relationship with the Soviet Union. Afterward, the 1964 constitution was formed, and the first non-royal Prime Minister was sworn in.
In April 1978, the communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) seized power in a bloody coup d'état against then-President Mohammed Daoud Khan, in what is called the Saur Revolution. The PDPA declared the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, with its first leader named as People's Democratic Party general secretary Nur Muhammad Taraki. This would trigger a series of events that would dramatically turn Afghanistan from a poor and secluded (albeit peaceful) country to a hotbed of international terrorism
The PDPA initiated various social, symbolic and land distribution reforms that provoked strong opposition, while also brutally oppressing political dissidents. This caused unrest and quickly expanded into a state of civil war by 1979, waged by guerrilla mujahideen (and smaller Maoist guerrillas) against regime forces countrywide. It quickly turned into a proxy war as the Pakistani government provided these rebels with covert training centers, the United States supported them through Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and the Soviet Union sent thousands of military advisers to support the PDPA regime. Meanwhile, there was increasingly hostile friction between the competing factions of the PDPA – the dominant Khalq and the more moderate Parcham.
The proxy war was messy for the country and for all the puppet master countries playing in this war. Eventually, though, the Soviets withdrew. The Soviet-Afghan War had drastic social effects on Afghanistan. The militarization of society led to heavily armed police, private bodyguards, openly armed civil defense groups and other such things becoming the norm in Afghanistan for decades thereafter. The traditional power structure had shifted from clergy, community elders, intelligentsia and military in favor of powerful warlords.
Another civil war broke out after the creation of a dysfunctional coalition government between leaders of various mujahideen factions. Amid a state of anarchy and factional infighting, various mujahideen factions committed widespread rape, murder and extortion, while Kabul was heavily bombarded and partially destroyed by the fighting. Several failed reconciliations and alliances occurred between different leaders. The Taliban emerged in September 1994 as a movement and militia of students (talib) from Islamic madrassas (schools) in Pakistan, who soon had military support from Pakistan. Taking control of Kandahar city that year, they conquered more territories until finally driving out the government of Rabbani from Kabul in 1996, where they established an emirate that gained international recognition from 3 countries: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The Taliban were condemned internationally for the harsh enforcement of their interpretation of Islamic sharia law, which resulted in the brutal treatment of many Afghans, especially women. During their rule, the Taliban and their allies committed massacres against Afghan civilians, denied UN food supplies to starving civilians and conducted a policy of scorched earth, burning vast areas of fertile land and destroying tens of thousands of homes.
In October 2001, the United States invaded Afghanistan to remove the Taliban from power after they refused to hand over Osama Bin Laden, the prime suspect of the September 11 attacks, who was a "guest" of the Taliban and was operating his al-Qaeda network in Afghanistan. The majority of Afghans supported the American invasion of their country. During the initial invasion, US and UK forces bombed al-Qaeda training camps, and later working with the Northern Alliance, the Taliban regime came to an end.
On 14 April 2021, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance had agreed to start withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan by 1 May. Soon after the withdrawal of NATO troops started, the Taliban launched an offensive against the Afghan government, quickly advancing in front of collapsing Afghan government forces. On 15 August 2021, as the Taliban once again controlled a vast majority of Afghan territory, they re-captured the capital city of Kabul
Western nations have suspended most humanitarian aid to Afghanistan following the Taliban's takeover of the country in August 2021 and the World Bank and International Monetary Fund also halted payments. In October 2021, more than half of Afghanistan's 39 million people faced an acute food shortage. On 11 November 2021, the Human Rights Watch reported that Afghanistan was facing widespread famine due to an economic and banking crisis.
Aimaq yurts and sheep
Culture: Typical qualification that all people groups can't be summed up in small paragraphs and this is an over generalization.
Aimaq is a Mongolic word that means "tribe" or "grazing territory". Of all Aimaqs, Aimaq Hazara and Timuri are closest to the Turco-Mongol tradition since they are semi-nomadic tribes and some of them live in yurts, whereas other Aimaqs live in traditional Afghan black tents. The Aimaq are largely nomadic to semi-nomadic goat and sheep herders. They also trade with villages and farmers during migrations for pastures for their livestock. The material culture and foodstuffs of the Aimaq include skins, carpets, milk, dairy products and more. They trade these products to settled peoples in return for vegetables, grains, fruits, nuts, and other types of foods and goods
Well-watered land produces rice, cotton, grapes, wheat, and melons. Most Aimaq no longer possess sizable herds (by which wealth is counted), but they might graze sheep year-round in this climate. Surplus produce brings income in Herat markets as do high-quality Herat Baloch rugs.
Certain characteristics apply to most Aimaq subgroups. Few speak their traditional languages. The dialects they speak today resemble Dari (Afghan eastern Farsi) mixed with words of Mongolian and Turkic origin. Researchers are attempting to determine if the Aimaq may be speaking Dari that is influenced by individual manners of speaking within their villages. They speak Dari in schools.
The staple food, eaten at every meal, is thick, whole wheat bread baked in mud ovens. Rice, chickpeas, potatoes, and summer garden vegetables accompany chicken, eggs or lamb (for guests or celebrations). They drink dugh, a beverage made with yogurt, salt, pepper and water.
Some Aimaq tribes endure severe winters and sparse rainfall regularly interrupted by drought. Semi-nomadic and poor Aimaq tribes grow dry crops like wheat, melons and fodder to feed animals that must be stabled in winter.
Women enhance drab lives by wearing brightly colored clothes sewn with glittering sequins over white or colored tumbons (pants). Outside their homes, women modestly wear the chadder namoz, a dark head-to-toe covering, and many still don a burka when in Herat. Men are seen in turbans or round caps with rough-textured cloaks draped around their shoulders.
Based on clan and extended family, the Aimaq are led by men and trace ancestors through male lines. Even so, Aimaq women exercise unusual privileges compared to other rural Afghan people groups in that they meet with the men and freely voice opinions, even with strangers present. Marriage is the most important life event celebrated among the Aimaq. They celebrate weddings with much dancing to rhythms beaten on flat drums. • Ask the Lord to call people who are willing to go to Afghanistan and share Christ with the nation.
• Ask God to use the few Aimaq believers to share Christ with their own people.
• Pray that God will open the hearts of Afghanistan's governmental and religious leaders to the Gospel.
• Pray against Putin and his insane little war.
• Pray for our nation (the United States), that we Christians can learn to come alongside our hurting brothers and sisters and learn to carry one another's burdens in a more Christlike manner than we have done historically.
• Pray that in this time of chaos and panic that the needs of the unreached are not forgotten by the church. Pray that our hearts continue to ache to see the unreached hear the Good News.
