2022.12.14 17:49 MHStarCraft Favorite Neptunia character by r/gamindustri user (2021-2022)

So what is this? Well, this is the gamindustri Neptunia character user favorites list, where I note down the favorite Neptunia characters of established subreddit users on here.
This was not the first time I've actually done this on here. When I started this back in December 2019, I meant for this to be a "semi-annual" project, but with the pandemic going around (among other issues that were happening on here) and as many departed from the subreddit during that time, I put this project on an indefinite hiatus for at least 2 years (the last report I did was posted on December 2020), as I was seeing the subreddit become less active and quiet. Of course, a lot of the userbase has changed since then, some older members still remain on here, while other users left, and some new users came in, so I decided to give this another shot. I started again, fresh for the new era of gamindustri subreddit.
Without further do, this is the Neptunia character user favorites list of 2021-2022:

Weapon Origins: Mach Punch
Check out my other posts: Claimh Solais Part I, Claimh Solais Part II, Gram/Balmung, Cestus/Whip Knuckle, Crissaegrim/Valmanway
Let me preface this by saying, I know I said I was going to cover both the Mach Punch and Kaiser Knuckle this week, but I ended up with much more content than I expected for the Mach Punch alone, so that’s why this post is solely focusing on that weapon. Kaiser Knuckle will come eventually. Enjoy the post.

Intro

The speed of sound is 767 mph (1,235 km/h). You’ve probably heard this before in a physics class or in a science documentary, but this is not true in every circumstance and it is only true under certain conditions. Really, the speed of sound changes with temperature and the medium through which it is traveling. Indeed, the speed of sound in air at sea level at 68°F (20°C) is 767 mph, which is probably the most acclaimed medium for sound to travel through, I mean, when most people say “speed of sound” you just assume that they are talking about the speed of sound in air. But, for example, the speed of sound underwater is 3,313 mph (5,332 km/h) and the speed of sound in air at sea level at 32°F (0°C) is 741 mph (1,193 km/h). A special name is given to the ratio of the speed an object is traveling to the speed of sound in the medium it is traveling, Mach. Attaining the speed of sound means an object is traveling at Mach 1, twice the speed of sound (1,534 mph) is Mach 2, and so on. That’s not to say that Mach can’t be used to describe things slower than the speed of sound (for example, a car traveling at 60 mph is going approximately Mach 0.08), but Mach is typically reserved for things going faster than the speed of sound. It’s a cool sounding word and it owes its origin to a Moravian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach who studied shock waves produced by supersonic projectiles in the late 19th and early 20th century. While the speed of sound seems like a rather unattainable speed to reach, people have been exceeding it for centuries with the use of a fairly renowned tool in the Castlevania universe, the whip. The cracking sound that a whip makes when it reaches the apex of its strike is caused by the breaking of the sound barrier. Like with most scientific things though, people in ancient times were completely ignorant of the causes of this phenomenon, so there’s no myths or legends from ancient times to discuss in this week’s weapon origin post. It’s understandable though, because there’s a lot of physics that goes behind making a sonic boom. I’m not going to get too deep into explaining it, so, for the sake of this post, just know that it creates a lot of pressure on an object. Of course, there are plenty of examples of vehicles breaking the sound barrier, heck fighter jets do it all the time, but they are built to withstand the pressure from tons of particles of air smacking against their surface. Human flesh is not as durable as the stuff that those vehicles are made out of\citation needed]); it’s unquestionable that a person would be ripped to shreds if even a part of their body attained that kind of speed. Yet somehow, Soma Cruz is able to break the sound barrier with his fist on a regular basis just fine with the use of a single piece of equipment, the Mach Punch.
The fastest human punch is nowhere near as fast as the speed of sound. The record for fastest punch belongs to Keith Liddell with a punch clocking in at 45 mph (which is only about 0.06 Mach). However, like usual, the animal kingdom can outdo the feats of humans and is home to the creature with the fastest punch on the planet. The peacock mantis shrimp can swing its front appendage, or club, at speeds of 50 mph, which is made even more impressive because it does so underwater. All of this is to say, though, that punching at the speed of sound in air is nothing more than an absolute fantasy, however, that hasn’t stopped fiction writers from incorporating blazing fast punches into their stories. Japanese creators like cool sounding things\citation needed]) and they often borrow words from other languages all the time to make things sound cooler hence why there are several examples of the term Mach being used in their fictional media. While the Castlevania Wiki only cites one possible inspiration for this weapon’s namesake and abilities, there are plenty more, as I will be showing. But, for simplicity, let’s start with what the Wiki suggests as the inspiration and go from there.

The Manliest of Manga

Sakigake!! Otokojuku (which translates to Charge!! Men’s Private School) was a relatively popular manga that ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1985-1991. It has sold 27 million copies in total and averaged about 0.79 million sales per volume. Since it ran in Weekly Shonen Jump, the most popular manga magazine in Japan, I would argue that there were millions of people who never bought a volume of the manga series itself and still read it through the magazine, so the number of people who read or at least know about the series is probably even higher than the volume sales suggest. Despite all that being said, I have never heard of the series until starting research for this topic. Apparently the series received a video game adaptation on the PS3 in Japan in February of 2014 (nearly 30 years after the manga’s initial release!) and Momotaro, the protagonist of the series, appeared in J star Victory Vs. (just goes to show how little I remember that game). From what I understand, it’s a very manly manga. I mean, it’s about fighting in an all boys school and most of the characters look like they eat steroids for breakfast. I imagine it was heavily inspired by Fist of the North Star, but it has a more juvenile tone as its primary demographic was Shonen. The plot is about a World War II veteran that sets up a school for the worst of the worst delinquents and reforms them into honorable men by having them go through grueling training and rigorous fights. It looks like a typical battle shonen from the time period of the late 80s, where the main cast of characters go from battle to battle performing inhuman stunts and spouting off lines about the power of friendship while being shirtless and not having any nipples. I didn’t read the whole series, I just skimmed a few chapters, maybe I’m making a sweeping generalization, but I digress. Back to how this relates to Castlevania, one of the primary lead characters, King Battler Junior (better known as J.) had a special technique that was his go-to move when he was in a pinch, the Mach Punch.
In chapter 21 of the series, J was first introduced. He’s a boxer from the US that wants to attend Otokojuku. In his debut, J wants to show off to the manly students of this manly high school, so he puts his money where his mouth is and shows them the speed of his famed Mach Punch. To do this, he sets up a stone block behind a spinning fan and punches the block without touching any of the fan blades. I’m not sure if this really counts as being as fast as the speed of sound though. I mean, fan blades typically go at like 500 rpm max. Or at least ceiling fans max out at 500 rpm, I’m guessing that industrial fans like the one J punched through could go much faster, so I’ll be generous and say that the fan blades were traveling at 1000 rpm. There are 4 fan blades, so J had to punch through ¼ of the fan’s full revolution to keep his fist unharmed. Assuming that J had to extend his arm 0.5 meters to reach the block, meaning that he had to move his fist 1.0 meter to move it in and out of the fan blades, his fist would have to travel a minimum of … drumroll… 66.7 m/s. Don’t get me wrong, that’s fast for a human, that’s about 150 mph, way faster than the fastest human punch, but still much slower than the speed of sound. Of course, that’s just the minimum speed J had to punch, he really could have traveled at Mach speeds. This is also his first appearance, so maybe later in the series there are more impressive feats, but I didn’t have enough time this week to read a 300+ chapter manga just to add more discussion to the namesake of a weapon in a Castlevania game. If you happen to know more about the series and the usage of Mach Punch by J, let me know in the comments! I guess later in the series J upgrades his Mach Punch to be even deadlier, because he has a few other named attacks listed on his wiki page, like Mach Punch One-Two, Jet Sonic Mach Punch, and Flash Piston Mach Punch.
Chapter 21 of Sakigaki!! Otokojuku. J. winding up to use his Mach Punch
Chapter 21 appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in issue 42 of 1985 which was released on September 30, 1985. The volume containing this chapter, volume 3, released in October of 1986. I bring this up, because I was determined to see if there was an earlier mention of Mach Punch from any form of media, but it seems like Otokojuku is indeed the very first. However, there was an arcade video game that was being developed in the mid 80s which also had a so-called “Mach Punch” present in it. I’m not sure how long it took to develop an arcade game in the 80s, but the developer of the game does not state that they were inspired by Otokojuku for their Mach Punch, instead, they cite another interesting source. Alright, let’s switch gears from manly manga to manly arcade beat ‘em up games. It’s time to look at Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun.

The Manliest of Beat ‘Em Up Games (And Also Speed Racer)

The Kunio-kun series of games have been around for quite a long time and basically popularized the beat ‘em up genre back in the 80s. The creator, Yoshihisa Kishimoto, would go on to create the ever so famous Double Dragon series of games. Kunio-kun had quite a number of sequels and spin offs as well; a very popular game in its heyday. Many of the games stayed in Japan and never got a localization, or they were localized with vast differences. Case in point, the first game of the series, Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun was localized in the west as Renegade. The game was originally released in Japanese arcades in May of 1986. So, not even a full year after the debut of the Mach Punch in Otokojuku, Kunio-kun was already in arcades. In the game, one of the boss characters (and a recurring character in future installments), Riki, has a move named the Mach Punch. I’m not sure how this was shown in the arcade version of the game (like if there is spoken dialog, a cutscene before the fight with scrolling text, or something written on the arcade cabinet), but somehow the character Riki was given the nickname “Mach Punch Riki” in the game. Sadly, when Kunio-kun was localized as Renegade, Riki’s name was changed to Jack and his signature move received a name change to “Stone Hands”, so the west never got to hear about Riki’s supersonic fists.
Official artwork for Riki
Riki is the first boss in the game, so I imagine he is the boss most people are familiar with if they played the game in the arcade in the 80s. I’ve never played the game myself, but I imagine that, if it’s anything like other arcade beat ‘em ups at the time, it was very difficult and many people got stuck on the first boss. Gameplay wise, Riki literally does have the fastest punch in the game, living up to his namesake. He can also grab Kunio by the collar and start beating him which, oddly, reminded the game’s creator of Speed Racer. He said in an online message board that, when animating the Mach Punch, he thought about chanting Mach Go Go Go; Mach Go Go Go being the name of Speed Racer in Japan. For those of you who don’t know, Speed Racer is one of the grandfathers of anime and manga (the manga started in 1966) and it features a racer known as Speed Racer in the west, but with a much different name in Japan, Go Mifune. In the series, he races in a car called the Mach 5. The reason it's called the Mach 5 is not because that’s the speed it can attain (infact, the Mach 5 can’t even break the speed of sound) but rather because go (the main character’s Japanese name) means the number 5 in Japanese. Regardless of the speed of his car, the point is that Speed Racer was all about speed and the word Mach sounded cool, so that inspired the Mach Punch from Kunio-kun. Now, this leads me to question whether or not Otokojuku was also inspired by Speed Racer for naming its Mach Punch. It’s not entirely out of the realm of possibilities, but considering that the creator of Kunio-kun said it was the movement of the collar grab attack in the game that reminded him of saying “mach go go go”, I kinda doubt that a manga with stationary images could trigger such a memory for a mangaka. Unless someone can dig up some old interview from Otokojuku’s author for why he named the Mach Punch what he did, the world will never know.
While Otokojuku and Kunio-kun are certainly the earliest examples of Mach Punch, they are far from being the only examples. Several other anime, manga, and video games that were made before 2003 (the year Aria of Sorrow was released, which was the first appearance of the weapon Mach Punch) have also had their fair share of supersonic punches which could have inspired the titular weapon in today’s post.

Yet Another Manly Manga About Muscular Men

Baki the Grappler is a popular manga series that originally started in 1991. The series is technically still ongoing, but there have been several separated parts spread out over the years (kinda like JoJo’s, but without the change in protagonists). I knew the series existed because I scrolled past it on Netflix before, but I’ve never watched or read the series. Unsurprisingly, it’s another high octane action packed shonen series with tons of shirtless, nipple-less men getting into fights, although this series is a bit more gratuitous with its violence. I would argue, from what I’ve read while researching, it is borderline seinen. Despite this, the series still has the quirky action manga feel with people that have special skills and powers unique to them. And one of those characters happens to have a move called Mach Punch.
The first part of the series (named Baki the Grappler) was released from 1991-1999. The third saga in this part is called the Maximum Tournament, and it is here that we get to see the Baki series’ take on the attack known as Mach Punch. It is used by this really arrogant guy named Katsumi Orochi whenever he is fighting a very buff Yakuza boss, Kaoru Hanayama in the B block in the second round. During the fight, Katsumi beats the crap out of Hanayama, but Hanayama won’t stay down. Katsumi decides that he needs to use a strong finisher move to down the monstrous yakuza boss for good. His strong finisher move is the Mach Punch and, in typical shonen fashion, an explanation is provided for how the move works in the middle of the battle.
Grappler Baki Chapter 244. Katsumi explaining his attack before he uses it
Apparently, Katsumi is able to align his joints in order to increase the speed of his punches. They move so fast that people can’t see them, which technically isn’t possible even at the speed of sound, but whatever. There is truth behind aligning joints to increase the speed of a punch, but to align as many joints as Katsumi aligned is humanly impossible. Check out this video if you want a deeper explanation of this technique. Katsumi uses the superhuman speed of his punch to finish off Hanayama by punching him in the back which is a sign of huge disrespect, but Katsumi was super arrogant so it didn’t matter to him. Again, typical Shonen stuff.
Considering that another weapon in Aria of Sorrow may have been inspired by the Baki series (it will remain a mystery until I eventually cover it in a post down the line), there is some credence to the idea that Baki is the inspiration of the Mach Punch. There’s one more thing I want to mention about Baki before going to the next section, though.
While this arc in the series didn’t happen until Baki Hanma (the third Baki series which ran from 2005-2012, so in no way could it have inspired Aria of Sorrow or Dawn of Sorrow), it’s a good example of what would happen to a person if they really did send their fist flying at the speed of sound. Check out chapters 118-131 of Baki Hanma, or more specifically, just chapter 130 if you want to see a pretty visceral image of the damage caused to Katsumi’s arm after training his Mach Punch to perfection. It’s gross, but like I said in the intro, the pressure caused by air particles smacking into things when they approach the speed of sound is incredible, nothing a normal human could survive with bare skin.
Luckily, most other series that have a Mach Punch don’t go for such a realistic take on the repercussions of a fist traveling at the speed of sound. So, let’s look at some other series that boast a supersonic punch.

Other Possible Inspirations That Don’t Have Enough Content to Discuss to Get Their Own Sections

Now it’s time for the rapid fire round of other series that have a Mach Punch or something similar in them. First up, it’s the most popular search result I received when doing research for this topic, Pokemon. Yes, Pokemon has a move named Mach Punch and it debuted in gen 2 (released in 1999) as the signature move of Hitmonchan. Since then, it has become a staple fighting type move for many Pokemon. It has increased priority, which makes sense given that the punch is thrown at “blinding speeds” according to the games. Of course, “blinding speeds” doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s traveling at the speed of sound, it gets the point across that the punch is fast. It’s not out of the question that Pokemon could have been the inspiration for some things in Aria of Sorrow. Given the “gotta catch ‘em all” type of gameplay that comes from collecting souls, it wouldn’t surprise me if the devs were inspired a little bit by Pokemon. Also, Pokemon is, by far, the most popular series that contains a Mach Punch and the third generation of games released in 2002, not too long before the release of Aria of Sorrow. If nothing else, I imagine that the devs were at least subconsciously aware of the fact that this move existed in Pokemon games and that it inspired in some part the Mach Punch weapon.
Tekken also has a blindingly fast punch known as Mach Breaker. I know this doesn’t share an exact name with the Castlevania weapon, but considering that the Werejaguar enemy was based off of a Street Fighter 2 character, it wouldn’t surprise me if the devs looked at some fighting games for inspiration as well. Mach Breaker is the signature move of Brian Fury who debuted along with his move in Tekken 3 which was originally released in 1997 for arcade in Japan. Tekken 3 is still, to this day, the best selling game in the Tekken series. When Brian Fury uses the move, he simply throws a straight punch which knocks the opponent backwards. There doesn’t seem to be any “lore” behind how Brian Fury uses this move, so I guess he just punches really fast. According to the Tekken Wiki, Mach Breaker is a reference to Mach Breakers: Numan Athletics 2 (released in Japan in 1995), a Japan exclusive arcade sports game also released by Namco. All you have to do is watch the first event in the game to understand why it’s called “Mach Breakers”. Essentially, it’s the Olympics on crack for superhumans that can run, jump, swim, and punch at inhuman levels. Given that the game has several minigames associated with punching and it was developed by Namco, it's easy to see how it evolved into the name of a move for a character in Tekken.
Dragon Ball is full of characters that can regularly travel faster than light, yet none seem to boast about their speed as much as Burter. The supersonic warrior from the Ginyu Force fought Goku in the Dragon Ball Manga in chapters 281 and 282 which were originally released in 1990. According to the Dragon Ball Wiki, Burter used an attack called Mach Punch in this fight. Okay, so another instance of Mach Punch being used before 2003 that could have inspired Aria of Sorrow, cool. And it’s from a super popular series too, definitely a potential candidate for the origin of the Mach Punch’s name …Except, at least in the manga version of this fight, Burter does not name any of his attacks and simply rushes Goku with a flurry of punches. The name for this attack was not added until much later, in Dragon Ball Xenoverse to be precise, which was released in 2015. Obviously, there is no way this could have inspired Castlevania’s weapon.
There are some other examples of supersonic punches in fictional media, but I think these are the heaviest hitters of the bunch (aside from Dragon Ball) in terms of likelihood for being the inspiration of the name of the weapon. Feel free to mention any other series that have a Mach Punch or something like it in the comments, I’m curious to know if there’s anything I missed that was released before 2003 which could have played a role in the namesake of the weapon. Now it’s on to the analysis of the portrayal of the weapon in the games it appears in.

Portrayal in Castlevania Games

https://preview.redd.it/0fyfd14yx1891.png?width=1335&format=png&auto=webp&s=8df44e17302a70639296da7a06adbd3fb61771a3
In Aria of Sorrow, Mach Punch has basically the same sprite as Cestus, but without the spikes. It somewhat resembles the knuckle weapon that J wears in Otokojuku, but those had spikes on the end of them. The description says that the user “Throws punches faster than the eye can see”, but it says nothing about going the speed of sound specifically. The animation for the attack is nothing too special, I wouldn’t even say it’s that fast. In fact, comparing it to Cestus again, I would say that the animation is just as long, meaning that Soma is also punching at the speed of sound with Cestus, making Mach Punch seem a lot less impressive. Of course, you do get multi hits per attack with Mach Punch, which makes up for its lack of speed and overall poor attack stat. The animation doesn’t really show anything special either, it just looks like Soma is punching quickly with a bare fist. The weapon is dropped by the Werejaguar, which, like I stated previously, is an enemy potentially referencing a Street Fighter character. This is possibly a reference to Mach Breaker in Tekken 3, given that it is also a fighting game. Granted, it’s a completely different series made by a completely different company, so the connection is a bit of a stretch.
https://preview.redd.it/gew72uczx1891.png?width=1337&format=png&auto=webp&s=cbb5b80e8b7b6d056031d834672ee9eb44998af4
In Dawn of Sorrow, Mach Punch gets a bit of an upgrade compared to its previous iteration. The sprite for the weapon is completely different; it now looks like a wind cloaked hand with a small sonic boom surrounding the wrist. This mini sonic boom is replicated in the attack animation, where every time Soma throws a punch, a sonic boom is created. I like the more visual approach to the effects of the speed of the punches. The description also changed to reflect this stating that the weapon “Enables punches to be thrown at the speed of sound”. The attack stat of the weapon is increased to 30 and it is the second best punching type weapon in the game. It is created by fusing the Whip Knuckle with Hell Boar Soul. Mach Punch evolving from Whip Knuckle reminds me of Baki’s interpretation, where joints need to be aligned like a whip. I imagine Hell Boar Soul is just used because those enemies are very beefy and have a focus on melee attacks, I can’t think of it being a reference to anything specifically. When fused with Werewolf Soul, Mach Punch becomes Kaiser Knuckle, an even faster flurry of punches. I have a theory for why Werewolf Soul is used, but I’ll save that for the discussion of Kaiser Knuckle.

The depiction of Mach Punch in Harmony of Despair is basically the same as in Dawn of Sorrow. The attack power of the weapon is dropped to only 10, but it counts as a 3 hit punch, so it essentially retains its 30 attack power from Dawn of Sorrow. It has 3 star rarity, which is pretty fair considering it's one of the best cestus type weapons in the game. But, for some reason, the wiki doesn’t list how to obtain the weapon, so I guess that’s up for you to figure out.

Conclusion

And there you have it, another part of the catalog of weapons in the Castlevania series explained. It was interesting to focus on more modern media this time around rather than myths and legends or real world history. Manga, anime, and video game references to other series are obviously abundant in Castlevania games, I’m excited to see what other weapons reference stuff like that. What do you think inspired the name and features of Mach Punch? Was it the manliest manga of the 80s, Otokojuku? I mean, that’s what the Castlevania Wiki article says, so it must be absolutely true, right? Or does its namesake belong to one of the longest on going Japanese beat ‘em up series, Kunio-kun? Could it possibly have been Baki, which I’m pretty sure inspired a different weapon in the game? Or was it something more contemporary and mainstream, like Pokemon or Tekken? Let me know your thoughts.
This time, if you made it this far, you should eat a hot dog. Hot dogs are dropped by Hell Boars in Dawn of Sorrow and I’m sure you had to dispatch a lot of those guys so that you could upgrade your Whip Knuckle to a Mach Punch. Or maybe you got lucky and didn’t have to grind for that soul … or maybe you just avoided punching weapons altogether … or maybe you never played Dawn of Sorrow, idk. Either way, thank you for taking the time out of your day to read my ramblings, you get a Mach high-five from me.
I can’t promise the next post will be out in exactly a week (typing these posts takes a lot of time and I need to focus on some other things this week), but I’ll try my best. Feel free to suggest anything in the comments that you would like to see covered in future installments! But, next time, I will most likely be covering Kaiser Knuckle as I already have some research done for that.

2018.07.30 00:47 EpicPianoSolo Player Order of The Trails Games and How to Play Them (For Western Fans, updated)

TLDR -
First: Trails in the Sky FC - PSP, Steam , GOG, Humble Bundle
Second: Trails in the Sky SC - PSP, Steam, GOG, Humble Bundle
Third: Trails in the Sky the 3rd (PSP version is JPN only) - Steam, GOG, HumbleBundle
Fourth: Zero no Kiseki/Trails to Zero - PSP Emulator TL(Google Zero No Kiseki, I'm not allowed to link the ENG patch), You can buy the PC version
Fifth: Ao No Kiseki/Trails to Azure - You can grab the Beta translation file here or google the latest one
Sixth: Trails of Cold Steel - PS3, PS Vita, Steam, GOG, HumbleBundle
Seventh: Trails of Cold Steel 2 - PS3, PS Vita, Steam, GOG, HumbleBundle
Eighth: Trails of Cold Steel 3 (contains spoilers, 40% off till 2018/8/15, 10: 59am Japan time) PS4 - As of Right Now you'd have to know Japanese or Chinese, link contains spoilers to import a physical/buy a digital copy of CS III and IV, if not then wait until the official localization.
Ninth: Trails of Cold Steel 4 - End of saga PS4 - This link also contains spoilers, please look at the Cold Steel 3 description.
Also, you can use your web browser's translate function to translate the text of the CS 3 and CS 4 links.
Though the Trails Series continuity isn't terrible to understand it can be a bit confusing for newcomers. So this is for anyone wanting to start the series, or those who beat Cold Steel 2, and want to play the other games.
• To explain the continuity you have the Liberl Arc: FC starting the plot and SC finishing it with The 3rd acting like an epilogue and adds new plot points for the following arcs.
• These games (FC, SC and TC) come first, then both the Crossbell and Erebonian arcs take place at the same time. Crossbell Arc: Zero with Ao finishing, Erebonian Arc: CS1 into CS2 into CS3 ending with the upcoming CS4.
• Crossbell and Erebonia take place at the same time in the games. Erebonia will spoil things in Crossbell and vice versa. So you can play the current fan translations of Crossbell first, or Erebonia either one works.
• The Cold Steel games are fine starting places if you want to get into the games, there's just some references you won't get if you haven't played the prior games.
• I'd recommend you played Erebonia before Crossbell but it's up to you since they take place at the same time.
• Play Sky before Crossbell or you will be lost on a ton of things.
• Zero: The current Translation is a beta rough version, the folks over at Geofront are working on what seems to be a great full Translation at the moment.
• Ao: There is currently a Beta translated version of Ao out now.
Cold Steel 3 and 4 heavily rely on knowledge from all prior Trails games to be played unlike the prior Trails games.

2017.04.28 21:52 Sandslice [JP relic discussion special] Golden Week: ultras and bursts galore!

So we're going to go with a weird format here, due to the nature of these banners. First, some general principles that apply to the Golden Week banners:
  1. Each console has its games featured:
    • P1: NES (1-3)
    • P2: SNES (4-6)
    • P3: PS1 (7-9)
    • P4: PS2 (10-12)
    • P5: PS3/4 (13-15)
    • Yes, this means that T0, Tactics, and Gaiden are excluded.
  2. Each banner has four 6-stars (USUALLY ultras, though there are two Chains) and 10 bursts, all at 1% probability: 14%. Please note that I will be making only one list for each group; the banners are strictly sorted by realm here.
  3. As many of the ultras have EX modes with some sort of buildup or iteration mechanic, these will be noted as such, eg for Warrior of Light: "BU (Knight attacks: Knight +5% -> 30%)". This means "a buildup, in which Knight attacks increase Knight damage by +5%, to a cap of +30%." Such effects do not last longer than the EX mode itself.
  4. Physical ultras usually deal ~70% x10 element/non or thereabouts; mage ultras usually deal ~170% x10. As such, potency will not be called out here, unless it is exceptional.
Master stats are all primary throughput; none of these characters is a Hybrid, so there's no question of alternate or dual stat. These will not be noted.
Things that aren't EX ultras but are 6-star:
Item Type Chara Soul Break
Ragnarok 1/sword WoL Ch: "Shield of Light" (Holy chain, party stock 2k)
Faerie Bow 4/bow Rosa Ul: "Blessing of the Goddess" (WHT: party curaga, magic blink, stock 2k; instant)
Conformer 8/thrown Rinoa Ch: "Shiva" (Ice chain, party short charge 2)
Conductor 10/rod Yuna Ul: "Song for Spira" (WHT: party curaga, raise 40%, haste, last stand)
Kaiser Knuckle Zeta 14/fist Yda Ul: "Tornado Kick" (PHY: 88% single fire/non x8 with self en-fire, physical blink 3, monk noncharge 3)
EX ultras. Pardon the mess, some of these get interesting:
Item Type Chara Soul Break EX or chain effect
Neo Braveheart 1/sword WoL Ul: "Bitter End" (PHY, holy/non with en-holy) DEF+100%. BU (Knight atks: Knight +5% -> +30%)
Lightbringer 2/sword Firion Ul: "Double Trouble" (PHY, holy/non with en-holy) ATK+30%. Cast speed 1.5x. BU (PHY atks: cast speed +0.5x -> +4.5x)
Kiku-ichimonji 3/katana Luneth Ul: "Memory of Wind" (PHY, wind/non with en-wind and shorter charge 11 ATK+30%. Wind atks add shorter charge 1
Lightbringer 4/sword Pecil Ul: "Sacred Cross" (PHY, holy/non with en-holy and self stock 6k) DEF+100%
Chicken Knife2 5/dagger Bartz Ul: "Chosen Traveller" (PHY) Chase3 fire/wateearth/wind SPB atks with (PHY/SPB: 40% same element x2, with chance of 6 more hits)
Apocalypse 6/sword Terra Ul: "Omen" (BLK, fire/non with en-fire) MAG+30%, short charge
Force Stealer 7/sword Cloud Ul: "Break the Bleeming Game" (PHY: 150% single wind/non x5 with self auto-crits) PHY dmg+30%. PHY damage can overflow.
Ice Brand 8/sword Squall Ul: "Brutal Shell" (PHY: 83% single ice/non x9 with self shorter charge 2) Chase second4 SPB attack with (PHY/SPB: 65% AoE ice/non x4)
Masamune 9/katana Zidane Ul: "Grand Lethal" (PHY, random wind/non with imperil wind) Chase Thief atks with an attack (and a chance at a different attack that has imperil wind)
Blitz Ace 10/blitzball Tidus Ul: "Memories of That Day" (PHY, watenon with en-water and self noncharge 1) ATK+30%. Chase water atks with (PHY: single watenon x6)
Federation Signet Staff 11/staff Shantotto Ul: "One Against Billions" (BLK, random lightning/non with en-lightning) MAG+30%, chase honed Witch ability with the same5
Yagyu Darkness 12/katana Vaan Ul: "Cruel Azul" (PHY, random. Steal ATK/RES (-50 / +30)) Thief dmg+30%. Thief noncharge.
Slash Carbine 13/sword Lightning Ul: "Army of One" (PHY, lightning/non with en-lightning and shorter charge 1) ATK+30%. Lightning atks add shorter charge 1
Apocalypse Zeta 14/book Alphinaud Ul: "Teraflare" (SUM: ?? AoE wind/dark with en-wind) SUM ability dmg increased by its hone level (5-20% at R1-4; 30% at R5; burst abilities are R1). Exits with (?/AoE: 7% of SUM dmg dealt during EX + self ether for 2 hones)
Sword of the Wise 15/sword Noctis Ul: "Awakening Armiger" (PHY. Adds Stoneskin 100%) ATK+30%. Non and null elemental dmg +10%. Duration based only on having Stoneskin.
Notes:
  1. "Shorter charge" is cast speed x3, the same effect as Orlandu's OSB grants.
  2. Bartz's ultra gives +10 ATK and +5 SPD for mastery. The latter effect is unique for SB masteries.
  3. "Chase" means to follow up an attack with some other unique attack (as opposed to double-tapping, which is to follow up an attack with itself.) Introduced by and named for an effect on Ace's ultra.
  4. Unlike most chase effects, Squall's only triggers on every other Spellblade attack used; however, it compensates by being an AoE of considerable potency.
  5. This is best analyzed as a chase, as it is NOT a double-tap; this version actually expends an additional hone, and fails if the original attack burns the ability's last hone.
Bursts:

2017.01.15 08:17 elemein Difference in play between a few classes?

Looking for a fun class to play. Definitely not looking to go high range whatsoever, actually looking specifically to go low-range and duo with a friend so that we can duo some bosses with low range for a challenging/fun time (at least it's fun to me).
I main Aran, so I have a penchant for "mechanical" classes, or ones that have lots of combos and stuff (I command everything, no skill key aside from Beyond Blade. I play on a PS3 controller so my wrist doesn't turn into a fine mush after 2 minutes of play and it's actually very enjoyable.)
I was considering either Kaiser, Blaster, Thunderbreaker or Hayato. Not sure what my friend would be going.
This is specifically for low range (like sub 100K) and is supposed to be a mechanically challenging class (I know Blaster has some really cool combos and combat mobility, and I know TBreakers are similar with a lot of iFrame timings, but I dont know much about the classes in general.)
So in terms of the actual play of the class, what's the difference?

2017.01.14 04:47 Balaur10042 So You Want to Hunt ... (3.5 Edition!)

A word of clarification: This is not a complete guide. There are many guides out there, but the purpose of this is an advisory on how you do things while you are already hunting. This is a message to help people prepare for hunting, and to deal with the current environment, which is, to say the least, a tad salty (especially all you people who carry a piece of HQ Table Salt -- or, especially rebelliously, The Salter -- around). You're getting angry, posting on Reddit, and making issues for some of those that work on Hunts in game. Moreover, you're either making them or SE responsible for securing your place at a Hunt.
Patch 3.5 is on our doorstep, and brings with it a new Anima weapon upgrade. New "relic" steps always entice people to work on older steps, or start on their own from new. Hunts are always a popular form of acquiring resources for Relic/Anima weapons, and this patch will be no different. Hunt-based tokens, Allied Seal materials, and even merely Poetics/Lore will be most readily farmed in this time as more and more people will be pushing the content in which it drops. Thankfully, according to Yoshida, the current step will not use Lore, which means you can spend this Lore on Umbrites and Singing Clusters for the previous two steps! To that end, this is a small list of things for you to keep in mind, tasks to do, in order to make the best of the Hunt environment on your server.
Furthermore, SE is adding the Illuminati Darkest Gobcoats to Bertana in Idyllshire, with which to upgrade Scrip (Shire) accessories, and which will require four Legendary Clan Mark Logs. This is probably going to be the biggest source of influx of Hunters, new and old. This makes Hunting a commodity -- and for some, a competition.
It is important for you to realize you have power over the situation you're in, but only as far as you are concerned. If you focus on your betterment, you can prevent a lot of wasted time spent complaining and more of that getting done and earning things you want. If everyone did this, Hunting would become a lot better overall for any server. Ultros doesn't have the type of Hunt networking that other servers have, with special networking LS designed to Funnel people into hunts for a specific period. Instead, we rely on a few LSs with some player overlap and people actively helping others get to Hunts. However, during "Hunt season," pulling is going to be fast, people will be impolite, and you are likely going to miss some A and S ranks. Follow these steps, and you will get the most out of "Hunt season":

Step 1. Networking

Your first goal is to have a LS available for Hunting, with active players who broadcast. If you do not have a LS for Hunting, either get into one, or make one and start getting people into it. Do not be afraid to remove people who do not benefit the LS, are leeches, are otherwise "bad players," etc. It's your social network, control it.
Without this, you're going to be running around on your own, and this is the first way you will lose all your Hunts. With one, your chances of getting a group, getting to the Hunt while it's alive, and receiving any reward, increase. If you don't have a LS for Hunting, make one. This is a heads up for people who do not have one: it's is not others' responsibility to zone shout or Idyll shout to get you your Hunt mark credit. LS may eventually clean out the roster depending on how active you are. If this happens to you, don't fret and find another, or have two and a permanent position in one. The latter works best when you are actively Hunting over the course of the game time, and not sporadically in the week. Let your position fall to someone who needs it, if you're not using that spot, broadcasting, etc.
Share information to others, if there is polite acceptance of your sharing in /FC, /shout chats, but perhaps avoid /N, maybe? The use of the website, [Ariyala's Hunt Tracker](ffxiv.ariyala.com/HuntTracke) often corresponds to groups on your server marking off when A and S ranks are killed, and automatically counts down their minimum cooldowns. Use this if you must to figure out when their windows are open, but note that for S rank Hunt marks you will still need to pop them.
Special Note: Macros!
Take some time and devote at least four macro slots in your macro list to Hunting. Others do the same. For you, you want a "Look what I found!" macro: "/p A rank! - at " and an extra line for each LS -- /l1, l2 ... -- you post into, and perhaps your FC as well. And a "Rebroadcast" macro, requiring you to click another link someone posted: "/p A rank! @ " and an extra line for each LS you post into. Keep these neat and orderly, short and simple. When Hunts are called en masse, they can clutter up chat, so keep them brief or you can be accused of spamming. If no one responds soon, you can post again after a few minutes.
Guildwork is an external program that reads your log and determines whether you're able to "see" A and S ranks Hunt marks if you set it up. However, because it's a third-party app that does, to a point, influence how you play the game, communities differ and divide on its use, and I would be cautious about saying you're using it if you are. Guildwork is automatically connected to Ariyala, so when you kill a mark, it should (but not always) update for your server. (No, I'm not going to link it.) Guildwork also doesn't work for players on PS3 and PS4, which widens the gulf between the value of its use on console versus desktop players, and one reason some groups (like mine) dislike players using it. (But, we don't report people we know who use it, post the always wonky coordinates GW gives out, so long as they follow through carefully.)

Step 2. Know Your Shortcuts

If you play on a toaster, lack a solid-state drive, are on a PS3 (see: toaster) it's possible you're going to miss more Hunt marks than catch them -- and you have my pity. Getting a SSD for your computer, getting a PS4, and getting a SSD for your PS4, will all improve your time getting around. It's probably the best investment for your game, and installing the game onto this drive will not be a negative though time consuming.
Even if you're in a group, even if you know where the target is, even if you're in zone, you are suddenly faced with the problem that some zones have aethyrites far removed from the spawn of the Hunt mark. So you're running/flying there, and it's dead before you get to it. Fortunately, there's almost always more than one way into a zone, and knowing these extra access ways will improve your chances of getting around. The majority of your training is to learn this shortcuts:
Thanalan
  1. Though Horizon is a good point to start in Western Thanalan, the best way to the western side of it is to take a ferry to Vesper Bay from Limsa. Start in Limsa, go to the Arcanist's Guild, then take the ferry right next to it. Similarly, the eastern/southern portion is best accessed from the Goblet, so go to Ul'dah, take a residential port, and then leave the area; if you have long loading times, take the Gate of the Sultana instead.
  2. Central Thanalan will have you run from either the Gate of Nald (north part of the southern half) or Gate of Thal (south portion of the southern half); or Black Brush (for any other portion). If the spawn is near Nanawa Mines or the Cutter's Cry area, you might try going to Camp Bluefog in Northern Thanaland instead.
  3. Eastern Thanalan half only two good access points: for any Hunt mark that appears in the Burning Wall or eastern side, you are best starting from Camp Tranquil in South Shroud; otherwise, take Camp Drybone.
  4. Southern Thanalan boasts two aethyrites: Anything in the middle portion of the map is going to be easier to get to from the north, Little Ala Mhigo one than from the south, Forbidden Springs one; use the south aethyrite only if you need to trek into the dunes or the very south end of the Amaljaa citadel.
  5. Northern Thanalan boasts to aethyrites as well, but Ceruleum Processing Plant is located so close to the middle and between all spawns it is the most reasonable choice.
The Black Shroud
  1. Central Shroud has a lot of little entry ways: the south portion can be easily accessed from Bentbranch, but also from Lavender Beds, just go to the latter from Gridania, take the residential port, then leave. The western portion is best accessed via the White Wolf Gate, whereas the north and east portions can be accessed via the Blue Badger Gate or from Bentbranch.
  2. There are no good shortcuts for North and East Shroud. You must suffer as all who have missed Wulgaru and Melt have suffered.
  3. Two aethyrites in South Shroud give you several ways to get around, although Quarrymill is closest to the Amdapor Keep area, and it's easier to get to the Buscarron's Druthers area from Camp Tranquil (straight line more or less).
La Noscea
  1. Middle La Noscea is deceptively large, and should a Hunt mark appear in the south portion it is fastest to go to Limsa instead and take the Zephyr Gate out; if the Hunt mark is in the north, consider instead going to Wineport in Eastern La Noscea and head immediately west, or Swiftperch in Western La Noscea and ride northeast.
  2. Lower La Noscea is a cruel punisher; if you take the wrong gate, you will likely not get there in time, as it takes minutes to travel from one end to the other. Do not ride all the way from Moraby Bay to the north third. Instead, take Limsa > residential to Mist > then leave to get to the north section; or take Limsa > Tempest Gate to the middle portion, and only take Moraby if the Hunt mark is in the south portion.
  3. No matter how far west the Hunt mark is in Western La Noscea, Aleport is your only option to get there; however, if the Hunt is in the eastern section, go to Swiftperch instead. Don't ride from Swiftperch all the way to the Sapsa Spawning Grounds. Just don't.
  4. Eastern La Noscea also boasts two convenient aethyrites dividing access to Hunt spawns between them; most times, the Hunt will be on the western, Wineport side, but occassionally will appear on the eastern, Costa side. There's a ferry between them, but take the aethyrite anyways. if the hunt is on the south end of the western side, you're still going to Wineport and riding.
  5. If you have fast loading times, the western side of Upper La Noscea is most easily accessed by going to Aleport and riding due north; otherwise, go to Camp Bronze Lake.
  6. Aleport > Upper La Noscea > ride of the Thalaos skeleton > Outer La Noscea is a reasonable trip for Hunt marks that appear far to the west in Outer La Noscea, but it is best to start in Camp Overlook anyways; the trips are about the same or shorter just from Overlook. There is no shortcut to the mines. Suffer as we have all suffered.
Mor Dhona
  1. The easiest way to most anywhere in Mor Dhona is from Revenant's Toll. This is especially true for Hunt marks in the eastern, Crystal Tower side. For the western Castrum Centri/swamp area, going to Revenant's toll remains the fasted, but the further western the mark is, the easier it is to start from Ceruleum in Northern Thanalan and riding north.
Coerthas
  1. Coerthas Central Highlands (CCH) is so large, that there are reasonable and quick decisions to make for getting around; most of these require starting in Camp Dragonhead (going north, east, south). However, for Hunt marks in the south east portion, the fastest route is from Revenant's Toll in Mor Dhona. Do not waste time riding from Dragonhead clear around the entirety of the map through the Pass or towards the Observatorium to get to the big crater or Monument tower, which boast several common spawn points.
  2. Coerthas Western Highlands (CWH) is just as large, but there's more reasonable shortcuts. For anything in the southern HALF or southeast third of the map, start from Falcon's Nest; for anything in the northeastern third of the map, start from Ok' Zundu in Sea of Clouds and fly due west to cross over; and for anything in the northwest or western third, go to Tailfeather in the Dravanian Forelands and fly southeast and cross the border.
Abalathia's Spine
  1. There are no shortcuts in Azys Lla. You always start from Helix.
  2. If the Hunt mark is in the northern Sea of Clouds, start from Ok' Zundu. if the Hunt mark is in the south, start from Camp Cloudtop or if you're in the northeast of Coerthas Western Highlands, go to Lancegate (the area with the ship in the frozen lake) and ride through. if the hunt is in the far east, it doesn't matter which side; however, sometimes the Hunt is high up: Ok' Zundu is higher up than Cloudtop, and thus might give you a few seconds boost.
Dravania
  1. For the west half of Dravanian Forelands, including the caves, use Anyx Trine; for the east, use Tailfeather. Tailfeather is slightly closer to the northeastern section, but they are close to the same places, and there's lesss turning around than if you start in Anyx.
  2. For most of Dravanian Hinterlands, you will start in Idylshire; the exception is in eastern, Maker's Quarter section, from which you should start in Anyx Trine in the Dravanian Forelands.
By knowing all this, you will be better suited to getting around, and thus getting to your Hunts faster.

Step 3. Don't Piss Off Other Hunters, or How to Behave In Hunts

One. Don't get angry
It's going to be really, really easy to get angry during Hunts. Just don't. If you find yourself getting so committed to the Hunt that you take personal affront, stop Hunting for a while. Focus on something else for a while.
Two. Portion Your Time
You can solve a lot of problems by allocating a small portion of your time to Hunting, like an hour, or the duration of one A train, then doing something else. Whatever you gain in that time is stuff you didn't have, and that's better than not getting any because your group doesn't want to lay with you, or you'd rather stand around shouting in zone chat about how someone screwed you over.
You shouldn't also Hunt during prime time for your region, and while this may correspond to the time you have online, know that Hunts are busiest, and pulled fastest, and even fail to be reported the most during this time. Unless you are one of them, you are going to be missing more during this time. Don't get even -- find the best time during the day to spend your Hunting time that maximizes your chances to get to them.
Three. Know That It's Not Your Hunt
Most anger comes from people taking a personal interest in the value the Hunting does for them. To them, it's time they lost, it's marks they were due, etc., and upsetting that expectation leads to anger. Stop this, too. Hunts are for everyone, yet the more people at a given Hunt the more difficult it will be to get even full credit with a reasonable group. This is a balance few communities know how to solve, so it's up to the players to determine how best to manage it. No one is required to wait for you; no one is required to hold, or reset, or whatever, for you. If they do, that's awesome; you have a good group to Hunt with! But do not expect it.
Four. Don't Bitch About "Early Pulls."
Shit happens. On unorganized servers, this the worst of things that happen in Hunts. Not the pulls; the complaining about the pull time. There's a way to work against this, it's really easy, but it's also considered up to the group at the time to obey:
Set a pull time. Setting it for :30-:45 Eorzean minutes or 1 Eorzean hour away is not an unreasonable amount of time. From finding and waiting about 4-5 minutes before pull is enough time for anyone who just heard the Hunt mark reported to get from ANYWHERE to that Hunt mark's location, including with some lag time. I've found that the complaining at a pull is reduced to nothing when they are told there was a pull time, people waited, and then when the time was up, the pull happened. There's just a lot less complaining when this method is used.
Such a decent wait from discovery to pull time (4-5 minutes) is enough time to run from Little Ala Mhigo to the southern end of the desert, in case you forgot Forbidden Springs was a thing. It's enough to get to the far end of the Sylphlands. These trips are the worst, and that's plenty of time to make it. If your group didn't hear about it until a minute before the pull, that's bad networking, so see Step One, above. Don't complain because the group who've been waiting there for 3-4 minutes won't wait another 2.
Special Note: Summoners
Summoners get a fair amount of hate at hunts because, as it turns out, a lot of SMNs don't know how their pets work, or know and don't care, or know and troll deliberately. Because when a SMN pulls out his Chicken or Nugget egi, if he has the Hunt mark targeted, when switching the egi to "Obey" causes them to immediately initiate an attack on the target. If you see the Hunt suddenly change color and Garuda-egi is the first target, that's probably why. This is something forgetful SMNs do, and it's something to be watchful for. I say this to prevent people blaming others unnecessarily; because accidents will happen when SMNs pull egis out.
And why would they have them out, you ask? Why, my figment of imagination, I'm glad you asked! For that, read Step Five, below.
Special Note: Squonk
If you see someone sitting with Squonk, a B rank from Sea of Clouds, and he's at low health but not dying because he's beating on a healing stance Chocobo or a Fairy, let them be. Chances are, the player there is "camping" Squonk, which means they are trying to spawn an S rank. If you are in a hurry, fine, it's okay, but ask first if you can.
Secondly, if you are the one camping Squonk, don't get angry when someone kills him out from under you. They needed him, too. Squonk spawns only in the southern half of Sea of Clouds, not the northern half, so that should make it easy to find him again! (HT to cablemonkey_42 's hard work mapping out all HW B ranks to find out their spawns.)

Step 4: The Best Way to Hunt is to Actually Hunt

Sitting in your house, your yard, Rev Toll, or Idyllshire isn't going to get you to Hunts any faster. What will is doing one of two things: Actively working with a party to find them (Guildwork doesn't always work, not all people use it, and frankly, Guildwork won't cause S ranks to spawn, so you're still looking/doing things to get those).
This can also be said as a sort of Step 5: Anyone who is part of a A train and is sitting in a zone doing nothing when not taking a quick bio or dumping tomes/seals should be removed from the party, as they are taking up space from someone who can use it, or are leeching others' efforts to find them.
Being out and about Hunting, otherwise called scouting, increases your chances of being early to a Hunt mark, as well as finding it. If you don't have time to be out scouting for Hunt marks, I'd question your committment to a Hunt party. To that end, numerous maps of spawn locations help people find them, which are avilable from these sources:
Imgur Album One, Imgur Album Two, as well as Cable Monkey's collection and House Jin's Guide.
A useful point I would like to make here, though: A ranks, and riding the A train in general, are far more lucrative than going out of your way to S ranks. Despite this, a large majority of "Hunters" wait around in towns and come running when S ranks are called, but ignore the A train entirely. During "Hunting season," we may find ourselves faced with a situation where this gets put on overdrive. S ranks are there as a bonus. If you're only going after S ranks and ignoring A ranks, but feel you have a right to them because you want the resources they offer, you're going about Hunting a little lopsided.
Hunts! Centurio Allied Poetics Lore Scripture Full run
ARR A 20 40 30 10 - 340, 680, 510, 170, -----
HW A 40 - 30 20 10 480, -----, 360, 240, 120
ARR S 50 100 100 30 - 850, 1700, 1700, 510, ---
HW S 100 - 100 80 30 600, -----, 600, 480, 180
Special Note: *S ranks have pop conditions.*
They do not just spawn into the world when their timers are up, unlike A ranks. All of them have an amount of RNG associated with spawning, including weather, moon phase, and certain actions performed by certain players.
There are only two S ranks that do not require player actions to appear: Laideronnette (Central Shroud) and The Garlok (Eastern La Noscea), which care about rain; either 2+ continuous weather changes of nothing but rain (Laider) or 9+ continuous weather changes without rain (Garlok). All other S ranks require player action to appear in the world. These actions are not always guaranteed, with the RNG on them differing widely. Some S ranks require hours of continuous work; others still can take days of work to pop, due to the low frequency or value of the actions needed to spawn them. Take this into consideration when assembling for, or assisting, in the popping of an S rank Hunt mark. Don't assume that an S rank is spawned because a group decided then and there to pop it; likely, there were a half dozen people (or in some cases, just one of us) working for hours to pop it.
On Ultros, we value anyone who helps with these, and value those who, if they cannot help us pop them, at least help us find them; we do think that the people who put the effort to pop S ranks deserve access to them, but not all do, and those who can help get the poppers there first are also appreciated.
Very, very few S ranks appear where the action that pops them occurs; most of them have completely random spawn points. Don't assume, as many do, that S ranks appear where you are at your convenience, just for breathing. S ranks that appear on top of you are rare: Kaiser Behemoth (Coerthas Western), Nandi (Upper LN), Mindflayer (S Shroud), Croakadile (Lower LN), Brontes (C Thanalan). All others appear somewhere randomly on the map.

Step 5: How to Maximize Your Credit

Even on crowded S ranks, the best ways to get credit somes from a variety of Enmity-generating technices.
First, WAR is the best class to Hunt on, especially in Deliverance, because your main attack combo is also your enmity combo, and you generate shitloads of hate while maximizing your upclose damage. Note, however, that while Second Wind/Equilibrium generates some healing enmity, Bloodbath does not.
However, Titan-egi is a useful way for SMN ot help their tank-less group generate bonus enmity at the cost the additional damage Garuda or Ifrit-egis provide. Not that extreme damage is very valuable anyway for Hunts; they melt so fast.
Second, the group that pulls gets the best chance at enmity, but this requires everyone to be trying to earn it.
Third, healing also causes enmity, and powering out Medica II/cure 3/Asp.Helios/Succor spam with tiered healing going will improve your groups chances. a Healer dpsing also does, but it also shortens the life of the Hunt mark, whereas if you have a tank or two in your group and plenty of damage dealers, healing hard and letting yourself bleed MP is not a bad way to contribute. On S ranks, it can also be a way to help stragglers, including people lagging behind, get to the hunt. This might not seem like your problem, but ultimately, it helps build up the social health of the group, and their willingness to wit for you should you be in that position.
Fourth, if two or more Hunt marks are up at once, coordinate with other groups so as to try to get all of them in a row. If one group refuses, they also lose out on whichever other marks the other players are at. Ultimately, it benefits all players the most by being patient and tackling Hunt marks in an order that promotes the msot people getting to them. Since Ultros is one of those servers where "Hunters" treat the A train as a competition, I'm more familiar with this result of "waiting" than the other. On servers with more socially-structured Hunt systems, the system set-up maximizes the number of active Hunters to get credit where they are able. But servers with worse communities can progress ad create one. Even if it means creating exclusionary party rules, blacklists, hoarding Hunt calls, etc. I personally prefer getting as much of the community involved.
If you got this far, thank you, and be grateful for all those people in the Ultros and other servers' Hunt communities for compiling data, building their community, and providing input for things that need addressing that make the Hunt experience better for more people.

2015.12.09 21:41 icatupas AMA Request: A Player who uses a controller

I've known for a while that a friend likes to play maple with a controller mapped with everything, but he's one of those players that dies a lot and complains about technical things. I personally blamed it on him and then just recently started considering the controller aspect. He uses a ps3 style controller, so I feel like that the lack of buttons could be the reason he's missing out on a lot of his class things (he's a kaiser but I'm not sure how diverse their skill set actually is). My question to other reddit-maplers who play off a controller:
  1. What style of controller do you use? Like is it a PS style, Xbox, steam, etc?
  2. Where do you place your situational skills?
  3. Have you ever tried using a keyboard?
  4. Why do you prefer a controller over a keyboard given the game is a little more oriented to something involving more buttons?
  5. Do you die a lot?
  6. What have you done to maximize your button space?
