2023.06.08 20:17 biddles11 [Opinion] Best Watch Under $800 Experience

Hi all,
I wanted to share my journey on finding the best watch under ~$800 for those looking for the best all around watch. Obviously "best all-around" depends on you're looking for in a watch, current collection and hobbies/job. For some background, my wrist is 6.75 inches and my preferred watch size is 36-40mm with a thickness under 13mm. I started enjoying watches around 2014 after my father gave me a Citizen Skyhawk titanium. My current collection in order of purchase dates include a Citizen Eco-drive skyhawk 42mm (which I've retired), Citizen eco-drive stiletto 36mm, Frederique Constant Heartbeat slimline 40mm, 1960s Girard Perregaux 35mm Calatrava, Invicta Pro-Diver 40mm, Tudor BB58, G-shock casioak, & most recently a Seiko SSC813. I've been down the Seiko pathway multiple times with a SKX009 and multiple vintage Seikos, and I've loved them all. I also had a Pepsi Steinhart GMT as well but eventually grew out of the homage watches. What inspired this post was that I could never find a classy, durable, well-sized, interesting watch that I could take anywhere and, importantly, use with a metal bracelet (preferable the OEM one). The Tudor BB58 black dial definitely fills a large void for such a watch, but unfortunately I did not enjoy the OEM bracelet and have it on an Everest band now. I considered an Uncle Seiko strap, but regardless, it's too nice a watch to wear in my profession everyday. At 3.5k, it also doesn't fit into the category for me at this moment in life as a best-all around for the price. I needed something to compliment the Tudor and my dress watches. An alternative to the Tudor under $800. I love the Seiko SPB143 which is very similar to the Tudor but slightly out of price range. Naturally, 6 months ago I pulled the trigger on the Hamilton Khaki Field auto 38mm with OEM metal bracelet. In theory it would hit all the aspects I was looking for: desk or field watch, perfectly sized, comfortable OEM metal strap, automatic with brand history. Weirdly, after two months, I did not find myself wearing it much. It was comfortable. The case felt well-built though pretty light-weight. Bracelet was lower quality but looked better than it physical felt, but still comfortable enough to wear. It just felt hollow. Oddly, I was wearing my Invicta on a perlon strap almost more than anything, as it is extremely comfortable on such a strap, cheap enough to not worry about, and I thoroughly enjoy using the bezel during work or workouts. (Let me say I am not a fan of Invicta and what they represent in the watch community but it's a well-proportioned watch for $40.) Something about the lack of functionality deterred me from wearing the Hamilton. Also, the weight of the watch did not make me feel the quality was worth wearing vs say a Datejust which, personally, just makes you feel good, like you are wearing a piece of precious metal. Though I have three dress watches, after 9 years I finally realized I prefer tool/utility watches. So, I decided to pivot, sell the Hamilton and keep searching for an enthusiast brand watch. I started looking at Seiko 5 sports, the new Seiko GMT, Orient Kamasu, Certina, Tissot, Christopher Ward etc. After reading all good reviews of the new Seiko GMT, I tried it on at an AD. Though it encompasses much of what Seiko is all about, the case and bracelet felt light-weight and hollow. I could probably get away with the dimensions but it didn't feel like what I wanted. Just by chance, I saw the Seiko SSC813 and tried it on. I've never own a chronograph but felt it would be fun to use. I didn't know much about the watch but knew it was solar powered, something I was trying to stay away from as it doesn't feel as genuine as mechanical watches to me. Putting it on, there was immediately a considerable weight to it. The case material feels different than other Seiko's I've worn, the bracelet as well seemed to be much higher quality. Though I later read reviews that knocked the bracelet, I beg to differ. The finishing of the case is well-done. The bracelet less-so but not as important to me as the feel. Needless to say, I ended up purchasing the watch. The off-white dial, the layout, the perfect 39mm size with smaller lug to lug are all perfect to me. The solar-powered aspect became less concerning as it is good value under 1k and requires little maintenance. The panda-dial reminiscent of the Daytona did make me hesitate for one second. I had already gotten a homage previously with the Pepsi Steinhart GMT and slowly became disgusted with it. But looking back into the history of the chronograph vs the GMT, the chronograph has a deep originating history by multiple major watch players including Heuer, Breitling, Zenith, as well as Seiko. Though the Daytona is universally recognized, I do not feel the Seiko is a homage. Meanwhile, the Pepsi GMT is and always will be Rolex forever, especially with very little variation in design since it's conception. Overall, after 3 months of Seiko SSC813 ownership, I feel its the perfect complement to the Tudor and my dress watches. I use it non-stop, it feels higher quality than the price suggest, the size is perfect, I can wear it to dinner, the office or swim with it with it's 100m water resistance. I don't think I'll get another metal bracelet watch until I can afford an Omega, Glaschutte, IWC or Rolex. Considering a $700 watch will hopefully hold me over until a $6k+ watch, I feel that's good value for someone with a watch addiction.

I got so fucking sick of them turning a blind eye to blatant homophobia, goadiness, and bad faith arguments. They know they are allowing truly awful views to be espoused on that site, but there is only so much trying to argue with a vicious mob you can do before your mental health is shot.
I have been on that site for well over a decade but seeing all the homophobic threads about Pride being allowed to stand, especially in FWR, has pushed me over the edge.
On the plus side I suppose I will have a lot more free time now. What do you lot do when you've escaped?

2023.06.08 20:15 helenalucia I hold resentment towards my boyfriend for ruining my graduation and I’m not sure what to do next.

I (f18) hold resentment for my (18m) boyfriend. I just graduated high school two days ago, and I feel as if he ruined it. (Backstory) for those who don’t know, you must have an invitation ticket to attend the ceremony, and my high school gave out 10 tickets per graduate since our graduating class was really small. We received our tickets two days prior graduation so we had time to give them out to the people we planned on inviting. Since my family is relatively small and my dad was the only family member that was able to come, I had 9 tickets left. I planned on inviting my boyfriend and his cousin that I’m close with, as well as his mom. Everyone said they were able to attend. I gave him an extra ticket because I wanted his niece to attend, and as far as I was aware of, she was able to come.
I explicitly told my boyfriend that I did not want his sister (niece’s mom) or her boyfriend (niece’s dad) coming, because they’re known to cause issues and their relationship is toxic (that’s a whole other story) and I didn’t want any issues to arise on my big day. He completely understood and seemed to respect my wishes. Okay no issue, right? On the day of graduation, the doors opened 45 minutes prior to the ceremony starting. I told everyone to come as soon as they can because seats were going to fill up fast. They all got there early and were sitting in the front row, and I noticed his mom and niece weren’t there, but his sister and her boyfriend were.
I texted my boyfriend asking why they were there despite me telling him numerous times in person and over text I did not want them coming, and he responded with “Niece and mom couldn’t make it so I gave them the tickets” “it’s not a big deal”. I was visibly very upset, but I couldn’t say anything because the ceremony was about to start. My dad was on the far left, my boyfriend was next to him on the right, his sister and her boyfriend were next to him, and his cousins were in the far right side. (Please keep in mind that his mother and his niece did not make it and that no one told me anything until the ceremony started) His sister and her boyfriend rudely got up and left in the middle of the ceremony and never came back.
After the ceremony was over, I asked my boyfriend where they went. He said they claimed they had to “go to the bathroom” and never came back. At this point I was enraged, however I still had to bite my tongue because my dad wanted to take pictures. Fast forward an hour, I still haven’t received any texts from his mother on why she couldn’t make it, and I never received any text from his sister on why they left early (despite them not being invited in the first place, not to mention they didn’t say “happy graduation” to me or anything) everyone left, but I invited my boyfriend to come along to get a celebratory dinner with my dad and I.
After we dropped him off at his house, my dad told me that his sister and her boyfriend did not say one word to him, or even look at him. (Keep in mind they were only one seat away from my dad.) I was very shocked and hurt, because not only was I disrespected but my dad was too. I confronted my boyfriend with a very long and thorough text explaining that he had absolutely zero right handing out those tickets especially to people I explicitly said I don’t want coming, and that their actions were an insult to injury. He agreed and said what they did was wrong and apologized on their behalf, but he kept dodging his accountability. I called him out on it and he did end up apologizing for what he did, but he did it in a tone that made it not seem as big of a deal as it was, and ended the apology with “it won’t happen again”.
I feel incredibly fucked over and disrespected. It is two days post-graduation and I still have yet to receive a text from my boyfriend’s sister or anything, and I haven’t texted my boyfriend since yesterday morning. This isn’t the first time he’s pulled something like this, on my 18th birthday I cried for two days straight because of him and couldn’t bare to leave the house (another story for another time)
I know the obvious answer it to break up with him, but it’s not that easy because I don’t want my graduation day to be a tainted memory with a breakup. Am I overreacting? Please help.

2023.06.08 20:15 Double_Start_7581 AITA for questioning my friends serving tactics and implying that it might be perceived as prejudiced?

My friends and I were out for snacks and drinks last night. My one friend, Wayne, was there and we were talking about work because most of us are servers/hostesses. Wayne is a black guy and works at a little bar that attracts a lot of moms with rich husbands who spend all day doing yoga and drinking mimosas.
Wayne was telling us about how, when he gets a table of these women, he will make a joke like “oh let me guess, bottomless mimosas and avocado toast for the table?” And they all laugh and get a kick out of it. Personally I don’t care what he says and I’m glad Wayne found something that works because he does make good money there.
Maybe I just felt like stirring the pot or playing devils advocate. I know this isn’t a good trait but sometimes I like getting in pointless debates about random stuff.
So I said to everyone that maybe I would do well (I’m also a waiter) if every time a black family came in I said “should I just put in a few orders of friend chicken and rib tips for the table? How about a pitcher of sweet tea as well?”
Wayne got like super offended by this. He even said “if my waiter said that to me I’d stand up and walk out without paying”. And I was dumbfounded. I kept insisting to Wayne that’s basically what he’s doing but with a different demographic. So if he wants to make those comments, why is what I said not cool? He just kept insisting I don’t get it.
I really do think I’m right on the premise. But I do feel like an asshole for starting this whole debate. Like I should have just not said anything, but I really was curious. Because I could see how some women might be offended by Wayne’s comments too. Like it definitely can come across as prejudiced.

2023.06.08 20:14 cbowns Ideas on relocating the house’s Cat5 drops to a better room: turn Hot Closet into Cool(er) Garage Rack

(tl;dr I want to move Cat5 drops from an interior closet to my garage so I can do a proper rack: what are my options, and what have I not thought of?)
I have ten(-ish) Cat5e drops (circa 2006 install) that terminate in an interior closet in the center of the house; 4-5 are active use for APs (UniFi APs powered by PoE in the room they're located in (not PoE from the closet)). No vents, one pocket door, and it’s off a bedroom: it’s just Not a Great Location. The ISP’s cable internet drop also terminates there (along with unused cable drops for running cable to bedrooms etc.)
I want to move this unholy hot networking cabinet hell into another room, ideally into the garage, where there’s a spot 6 ft away (as the cable runs) for a ~10U wall-mounted rack. Garage Rack would also be able to host e.g. a Plex server or a central PoE switch (since today those would boil alive).
Ways I can think to do this:
Any smarter ideas? Suggestions for the cable modem part? (I’m inclined to leave that in Hot Closet and pull one cable for “this is the WAN” to Garage Rack.)
(A note on temps, and why Garage Rack: I'm in the PNW; the garage runs cool due to some construction tricks and a friendly layout relative to solar insolation; even during some truly blistering heat waves the garage ceiling hasn’t gone above 80F, and I don’t have central AC anyhow. Also, it’s close in terms of wire length. Also also, it’s the least worst location relative to anywhere else I have to work with.)
(But also, happy to be wrong here! tell me what I’m not thinking of.)

2023.06.08 20:14 graydc Review 6: Tomatin 12 Year

Review 6: Tomatin 12 Year

Distiller: Tomatin
Bottle: 12 Year
Classification: Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Region: Highlands
Age: 12 Years
ABV: 43%
Barreling: Ex-Bourbon Sherried American White Oak
Finish: 6-9 Months in Sherried American White Oak
Heavily Peated?: No
Estimated Price: $50 USD
Tasting Procedure: Whisky was poured into a Glencairn, and set out for about 15 minutes.
Nose: This is a weird one, there is no bite like one would expect from a scotch. Sauvignon blanc and chardonnay, butter, orange, graham cracker, pistachio. Almost a hint of mucus.
Palate: Very soft, as advertised I guess. Quite sweet, candied oranges and vanilla bean. Lemon oil, gingersnap cookies. The sherry is noticeable for sure too, adding some darker fruit and toasted nuts.
Finish: The liquor is pretty thick and it sticks around well, as most sherried scotch seems to do. That being said, the sherry influence is more prominent in the finish, with the darker fruit flavors being more prevalent. A bit of baking spice comes through as well, and some black peppercorn. Chocolate-raspberry ice cream creeps up eventually as well. Very nice finish.
Score: 3
Thoughts: This is an interesting bottle. Honestly, the nose is a bit off-putting to me, the mucus smell is something I may be fairly sensitive to. Palate wise, this is a very soft scotch, with almost none of the bite that is typical of scotch whisky. There is little saline, maritime flavor, or smoke -if any - making this drink stand out a bit. It is cool in that way, and fun to try, but personally not my favorite. I do enjoy the palate though and I think it is an improvement from the nose, but I think that my favorite part of this whisky is the aftertaste, and I don't mean that sarcastically. The finish on this whisky is delicious, and the softness allows you to really savor the sherry notes like you usually can't. This is a good scotch, just maybe not my style.
Score Guide:
0 - Disgusting and undrinkable. I would rather drink everclear than this.
1- Not good. This is a bottle that I would rather just simply avoid. A bottle with this score would be one that has off flavors, or is so bland that it is not worth ever choosing at any price point.
2- Average. This is an acceptable bottle that is not bad but has nothing distinguishing about it. I'd drink it if it was free or cheap, but I probably wouldn't order it at regular prices.
3- Good. This is a bottle that I enjoy, and would purchase from time to time. If it was on a sale, I'd consider it a good deal and would be likely to grab it. It would have good qualities about it, but may be lacking in less detrimental aspects such as complexity.
4- Great. This is a bottle that I would be highly likely to purchase, and would always restock if it was on sale. This needs to be a bottle that stands out a bit. This could definitely be a daily drinker.
5- Exceptional. This is a bottle that must be on my shelf. This is something that I would drink all the time if I could, and I would highly recommend to others.
5+- Phenomenal. This category is fairly subjective, hence when I didn't opt for a "6". This is a 5 bottle that stands out, one that I would drink 9/10 times when presented with other 5's. Anything that receives a 5+ is one of my personal favorites, and something that I save for rare occasions (unless it's cheap and then I drink a lot of it).

2023.06.08 20:14 Begonethot212 Can ammonia levels at 0.50ppm kill neos?

I have an established tank and the shrimp have been in there for the past 6 months, making babies and thriving. I went on a week long trip and when I came back, my shrimp were very lethargic, with some laying on their sides, curling their front legs as if they were trying to grab onto something. A few others were flicking around the water very erratically, then would also lay on their sides.
I also have one ancient Endler in that tank, which the person watching my place was feeding. I showed her how much to feed and how often, explaining that too much left over food can be dangerous. She seemed to understand, but when I tested my parameters, the ammonia was at 0.50ppm and everything else was pretty typical for the tank.
Planted 5.5 gallon, distilled water remineralized with Aqueon Shrimp Essentials, fertilized 1x week with Thrive Shrimp Specific fertilizer.
I did a 40% water change and added prime, but the few survivors today are definitely not doing well. :(
The only other thing I can think of that may have cause this is that I added some new plants that were grown in tissue culture. I was sure to soak and rinse them and get as much of the culture off as possible, but is it possible that some residual culture was eaten, causing copper toxicity or something? I’ve used them before and never had an issue. My snails and Endler seem fine.

2023.06.08 20:14 N8ture_ Anyone with very physically demanding jobs?

Hey guys, I work on a large horse farm. I lift feed bags, push around/lead/hold horses (lots of my arm getting pulled out of the socket lol), lift my arm to dump buckets over the fence, do groundwork with young horses (again a lot of strain on the arms and chest muscles), etc. I’m starting to look into surgeons and everything but I’m curious to know how other people with physically demanding jobs dealt with their surgery? My employer will likely be understanding when the time comes but I can’t stand not working and don’t want to be out for more than 3-4 weeks. Did anyone plan a vacation after a week or two of healing to pass the time and/or what have you guys experienced as far as the timeline of going back into very physical work?

2023.06.08 20:14 omcstreet Pup chases, barks at other dogs & children

Have a 9 month old chihuaha/rat terrier mix that i got from a shelter few months back. At home he is very sweet, super attached to me and listens to most things as much a sheltie pup can. Already have an older dog which he gets along pretty well. However from the time i got him, he is super jittery + scared of everything. His first instinct if he thinks he did anything wrong is to go hider under sofa or crate (say he pees inside and if i say out a word in frustration or if he barks & ask him to stop). This has been getting better, more confidence now.
Could manage all of this, but past 4 days on a walk whenever he sees another dog he finds a way to slip out of the harness and chase after that dog & bark. He doesnt hurt or bite, just bark and i have to find a way to calm/leash him back again. Today he did the same, and started chasing barking at kids whoever were out. Fortunately i'm in this community for long, most know my dogs - so calmed people around & after a long scary 10 minutes of him running around doing shit got him to come to me.
Seriously thinking of returning him, running after kids is where i draw a line. I have exposed him to children since he was small, he gets along okay but for some reason he doesn't like boys and coincidentally he found 2 small boys today to chase after his escape. Anyone experience this or have suggestion ?

I don't understand people that don't want CP3. The data says that he's better and more impactful than Austin Reaves, D'lo, and Schroder. Yes he's old but if you could get him for part of the MLE and get a backup like Jevon Carter you would be better off at the guard position than last year. Reaves, CP3, and Carter are enough ball handlers to give Lebron rest off of the ball. Plus he is the best passer and would help AD get easier baskets.
CP3--Gms:59, PER:17.7, BPM:3.2, OBPM:2.0, DBPM:1.2, WS:6.2
AR---Gms:64 PER:14.9, BPM:0.7, OBPM:0.6, DBPM:0.1, WS:5.4
D'Lo-Gms:71 PER:16.3, BPM:1.5, OBPM:2.1, DBPM:-0.7, WS:5.1

2023.06.08 20:13 ForgotDeoderant Even public transportation hates bicyclists...

I've been looking at different opportunities to work in Boston, and I figured the commuter rail would be perfect to get in to town! I live on on the furthest stop, which means I'm the first to board the train in the morning, and the last off in the afternoon.
Lo and behold, the first train of the day that allows me to bring my bike with me is the 9:50am train, meaning I would need to find a job that starts later or another form of transportation from the train stop to work.
I understand that we need to be sure there is enough room for additional passengers to get to and from work, but I'm so use to Denver's light rail where I could always bring my bike with me to get around downtown and then bike home from the station.
What are your thoughts on this? I know I'm generally upset because this is directly affecting me, but maybe it's the best situation to accommodate the most people. Do you have any suggestions or how does your town handle this?
